Najib, who was moved by the large crowd at a gathering in SMK Sri Aman here yesterday, said it was a sign of the people's support not only in Kelantan but also the whole country. "I am surprised by the large crowd here. I did not expect to see so many people. I have been going around meeting people all over the country and this is the best gathering I have been to. "How can it be such a big gathering in a state that is still under opposition rule? This is a clear sign of a wind of change in the state." The prime minister said the large turnout also showed that Umno and BN were still close to the hearts of the people. He said the move by 2,800 Pas members here in quitting the party to join Umno proved that the Kelantan people's confidence in the Pas leadership was waning. Najib said among the Pas members who had joined Umno included Raja Abdullah Raja Mahmud, a relative of Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat. Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Mustapa Mohamed estimated the crowd to be more than 20,000. Present were Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, who is also Kelantan MCA chief, Umno vice-president and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin. Najib said the state would undergo numerous changes under BN. "If the people give their support to BN, we will bring many changes to the state. "Pas has been telling lies to the people, but we do not lie. "We will not be able to achieve the status of a developed country under Pas. To become a developed nation, we must have the capabilities and not just talk." Najib also hit out at Pas for changing its struggle from that of an Islamic country to a welfare state because it was submissive to DAP and its leaders. He said as the leader of the ruling party, he would ensure that it did not divert from its principles and struggles to uphold the truth. The prime minister and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who arrived yesterday morning for a day's visit, had a tight schedule. Upon arrival here, Najib had a meeting with state Umno leaders at the Pasir Puteh Umno division building, followed by a walkabout at the taxi station and market. He also visited the Kampung Pulau Lima mosque and announced a RM500,000 fund for the expansion of the building. Later in the evening, at a meeting with his Facebook friends at a hotel here, Najib said the government did not want any state, including Kelantan, to be left out of the country's transformation programme. He said the government had prepared a clear and systematic plan under the programme to propel the country towards developed status. "It's not a mirage or daydream. We want all states, including Kelantan, to be developed when the time comes," he told about 100 online friends at the meeting. The prime minister said one focus under the programme was human capital, and the state was blessed with it. "However, we do not want to see Kelantan's talent concentrated in the Klang Valley and other growth areas. We want to see more of them finding jobs and using their skills in their own state so that it will become more developed. A statement released by the Registrar of Societies said the home minister had invoked his powers under Section 5 of the Societies Act 1966 to declare Bersih an unlawful organisation, making those associated with it liable to jail terms and fines. The banning of the organisation took effect yesterday. Section 5 of the act gives absolute discretion to the home minister to declare a society unlawful "if he deemed it is being used for purposes prejudicial with the interest of the countr y's security, public order or morality". The RoS, which enforces this law, said even though not a registered organisation, Bersih, through its activities, had met the criteria of a structured organisation as defined under Schedule 1 of the act and had been illegally functioning as one. Registrar Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman said office-bearers, including any person managing or assisting in the management of any unlawful society, shall be guilty of an offence and could face, upon conviction, imprisonment of not more than five years or a fine not exceeding RM15,000, or both. He said those who are members of unlawful societies or attend meetings of unlawful societies could also be liable to a maximum jail term of three years or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both. Rahman said the law also allowed the authorities to act on those who allowed unlawful societies on their premises. They are liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine of not more than RM10,000, or both. Rahman said in studying the Bersih case, RoS found that the illegal set-up had operated actively and created anxiety and concern among people of all races in the country. RoS also found Bersih to have spread subversive propaganda to influence the people in toppling the government through its activities and the distribution of materials, and this had given the country a negative image. "In fact, this could pose serious threats and throw public peace, security and stability, as well as the countr y's economy and sovereignty, into disarray. Top Australia cop demands veil powers Posted: 02 Jul 2011 09:34 PM PDT SYDNEY: One of the most senior policemen in Australia on Sunday said authorities must have clear legal powers to require people to remove face coverings, including veils, if they are do their job properly. The comments by New South Wales state Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione follow the case of Carnita Matthews, who in November 2010 was sentenced to six months jail for falsely accusing police of forcibly trying to remove her burqa. It followed the woman being pulled over for a traffic offence. Her sentence was quashed last month when a magistrate said he could not be 100 per cent sure it was Matthews who made the complaint because officers were not able to see the face of the accuser. Scipione told the Sydney Sunday Telegraph there must be one law for everyone — regardless of their race or religion. "This is not about disrespect; this has got nothing to do with religion," he said. "It wouldn't matter whether it was a full-face motorcycle helmet or a balaclava at the snowfield: People have to do what they're required to (by police). "Whether you're wearing a veil, whether you're wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet, a ski balaclava in the snowfields — if there is a lawful reason, if there is a need for police to actually identify the person, then this should not be in the grey. "It should be something everyone clearly understands." Scipione said he had held talks with senior politicians who had indicated that if there was a loophole, then they would work to close it. "This is not something we can just allow to continue," he said, adding that frontline police officers had to be protected from vindictive complaints, which could ruin careers. Rescuers rush to reach 40 trapped Chinese miners Posted: 02 Jul 2011 09:30 PM PDT BEIJING: A build-up of volatile gas hampered rescue efforts in one Chinese coal mine and high levels of water slowed them in another as emergency crews raced to reach 40 miners trapped Sunday for a second day, officials and state media reports said. The accidents — a cave-in at one mine and a flood at the other — occurred Saturday in two southern provinces after days of heavy rains. At the Heshan mine in Guangxi, rescuers vented explosive gas released from coal seams and pumped out silt-filled water as they tried to reach 19 miners believed to be 1,200 feet (390 meters) underground, the state media reports said. China Central Television interviewed a miner who said he heard a loud explosion before the cave-in, which killed at least three miners. Waters continued to flood into the Niupeng mine in Guizhou, where 21 miners are trapped. Industrial pumps were brought into action but the waters remained high, CCTV said. Heavy demand for coal to fuel China's economy has turned Chinese mines into the world's deadliest, despite constant safety campaigns that have managed to reduce fatal accidents. PM's Kluang visit: A commentary Posted: 27 Mar 2011 03:59 AM PDT 2011/03/27 By Shahrum Sayuthi news@nst.com.my I WAS quietly amused when my hometown friend Fiona reacted with much enthusiasm when I told her that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was making a stopover at her alma mater, the Chong Hwa High School, during his visit to Kluang on Saturday. She is after all a DAP supporter and had not made it a secret to me who she voted for when she had cast her vote for the first time in the 2008 general election. "Oh my God! That's so great of him!" was what she text messaged me in return before proceeding to relate how when as a student she had, along with others, lined the street leading to her school when then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went there in 1987. "That was the last time a prime minister visited our school. I remember it was a very hot day and we were sweating, but we were all so happy that a prime minister visited our school," she added. If Fiona was at the school on Saturday, she may have thought she had been transported back in time to that day. The over 2,000 students, in their all white uniforms, were equally enthusiastic in welcoming Najib. The highlight of Najib's visit to the school was when he mentioned in his speech the government's "landmark decision" to allow Unified Examinations Certificate holders with three credits including passes in Bahasa Malaysia and English, to take part in the special intake for the Chinese language degree course to become Mandarin teachers. The students cheered as he made the announcement. "We (the government) are committed to being fair to everyone and will continue to strive for this. Dreams will not be realised until we are at peace with one another," Najib had said. My colleague Chuah Bee Kim interviewed some of the students and teachers on how they felt about Najib's visit. Seow Yu Sheng, 15, a Form Three student said it was a memorable day as it was the first time he had seen the prime minister in person. "I am happy to see him. Furthermore, he was here today to launch our school's green programme which my teachers have always promoted among us," he said. Another Form Three student, Dana Lim, 15, echoed Seow's sentiment but lamented that Najib's hour-long visit was such a brief one. "My classmates and I nonetheless feel very honoured to have the prime minister at our school," Lim said. Liong Kok Kiong, 32, a geography teacher at the school for the past six years said the announcement made by Najib regarding UEC holders was very uplifting as it was a step towards the success of the 1Malaysia policy. "I also hope that Najib's visit will encourage more English language teachers to join our school as we need more of them here," he said. Later in the night, Najib attended a "dinner with the people" function at down town Kluang which was attended by more than 10,000 people. Such was the overwhelming response given by the crowd when Najib arrived at the function that Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had to pause several times to compose himself while delivering the welcoming speech. Expressing his pleasure, Najib in his speech, suggested that judging by the crowd's response at the function and during his walk-about in several parts in Kluang earlier in the day, Barisan Nasional may probably recapture the lost ground it suffered during the coalition's disastrous outing in the 2008 general election. He told the crowd how an old Chinese lady gave him a 51-year-old Jalur Gemilang during the walk-about. "I was so touched because she told me that it was a gift for my effort in initiating 1Malaysia," he said to thunderous applause from the crowd. The prime minister probably had in mind that Kluang, with its huge Chinese community, was the DAP's first stronghold in Johor before it was overwhelmed there by BN in the late 1970s. However, in 2008, DAP captured the Mengkibol state seat there when its Ng Lam Hua defeated Gan Ping Shou of MCA by a majority of 1,281 votes. Ng had got 13,538 votes while Gan received 12,257. When Najib announced an allocation of RM105 million for the construction of a dam in Kahang to ensure no recurrence of a water supply problem which hit Kluang during last year's Chinese New Year, I immediately sent a text message to Fiona. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the students, aged between 18 - 25 years old were taken to the district police station and released soon after. "We are investigating if the students are from Gua Musang or outsiders," he said after a briefing at the police operations centre here. He said they would also work with the Election Commission and the students' universities during their investigations. The students are from a group, calling themselves Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam SeMalaysia (Gamis) and were allegedly distributing brochures urging the locals to exercise their democratic right to vote. A spokesman yesterday said the group represented students from various universities and had come to Galas to observe the campaign process and also explain to the people certain national issues, including the 2011 budget and how it effects them. Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the detention of the students should not be politicised as they were merely detained for not possessing a valid permit to distribute the pamphlets. "The students were not aligned to any political party and were merely there to urge the people to come out and vote. They are acting on their own and nothing to do with their respective universities. "However, I would like to advise these students to go home and concentrate on their studies instead," he said when contacted. On another issue, Ismail also said the police had to date received four reports on minor incidents involving the parties contesting the by-election here. "I urge all parties to adhere to the laws and prevent any untoward incidents," he added. Prime Minister and wife in Kelantan Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:31 PM PDT Prime Minister and wife in Kelantan KOTA BAHARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, have arrived here for a one-day visit to the state. They were greeted on arrival at the Gong Kedak air base, Terengganu, at 9.40am by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Deputy Finance Minister Senator Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, Barisan Nasional (BN) component leaders and heads of federal departments and agencies. He is scheduled to meet members of the Kelantan BN coordination committee at the Pasir Puteh Umno office before going for a walkabout at the town's central market and car rental station. He will later meet the people at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Aman, Kampung Tok Nik, Pasir Puteh before performing the Zohor prayers at Kampung Pulau Lima mosque. He will then proceed to Machang to attend a "Jiwa Murni" programme before meeting the people and Kelanfan football fans at Sekolah Kebangsaan Machang 1. This will be followed by a get-together with his Facebook friends at Renaissance Hotel here. In a separate programme, Rosmah will visit Pusat Anak Permata Negara in Bachok before meeting women's associations here. EC may allow foreign observers Posted: 01 Jul 2011 11:17 AM PDT BANGKOK: The Election Commission is looking into inviting international observers for the coming election, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said. Saying that allowing international observers was a good practice, he said the EC would, however, look into various aspects, including costs, before deciding on the matter. Speaking in an interview with TV3 and Bernama here, Aziz said the move would allow the observers to see for themselves the way Malaysia conducts its elections. Aziz is here on the invitation of Thailand's election commission to monitor the country's election on Sunday. Malaysia is among 13 countries invited to observe the election -- a move which Thailand hopes will enhance the confidence of the international community in the country's election. Aziz described the invitation as an honour for the EC, saying it reflects confidence in the commission's ability and in Malaysia's election system. "If they didn't recognise our election system, they would not have called us to become international observers," he said. When asked what the criteria of a free and fair election in the eyes of the international observers were, Aziz said, voters should be free to vote and not being influenced or forced to vote only for certain parties. The candidates, on the other hand, should be free to campaign, he said. Voters should be allowed to listen to or follow the campaign and there should be no fraud or corruption. Asked on the eight demands by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih), Aziz said, there was always room for improvement. He stressed that the EC did not view itself as a perfect entity. He also explained the EC's positions with respect to some of the demands, including: - Cleaning up the electoral roll -- He said this was being done on a daily basis but the public should also play their part by informing the EC about their status. There was no proof of voters being able to cast their votes more than once and that there had been no such cases being brought to court. - Minimum of 21 days campaign period -- The EC is looking into this, as well as the request for the campaign period to be shortened. The EC will also look into the matter from the security aspect. - Use of indelible ink -- The EC is looking into the use of the biometric system. - Free and fair access to media -- The EC cannot order the media to provide coverage for any party. The EC, however, can discuss with the media to give space to all parties. - Stop corruption -- The EC agrees with this but has no expertise in the matter. The EC, he said, would get the help of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. - Strengthen public institutions --- He said this was not within the EC's purview. - Reform the postal ballot system -- The EC is looking into this, including the possibility for an advance voting system similar to the one implemented by Thailand, with voters allowed to vote earlier, or on polling day. The system, however, had its own inherent problems, he said. He stressed that some of the demands were not under the EC's jurisdictions. Bersih had submitted 17 demands but reduced them to eight following discussions with the EC, he added. "Had Bersih continued with the discussion, we would have been able to reduce them to about three issues," he said, adding that Bersih's illegal rally planned for July 9 would not solve anything. "Demonstrations won't solve anything. Many blamed the heavy rain which started to pour earlier but the rain had stopped before the Tok Guru took the microphone. There was an estimated crowd of about 200 people; its usually not the case as Pas supporters would braved the rain, willing to be soaked to the skin to listen to the party's spiritual leader and Kelantan menteri besar speak. The Sungai Terah polling district has about 95 per cent of Malay voters; in the 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional only managed 78 votes compared to Pas' 215 votes. That was how strong the Islamist party's influence there then. But Umno leaders are anticipating that the situation could change, they believe the level of support to Pas may dip when some 300 registered voters there go to the ballot again on Nov 4 to pick their new representative in the state legislative assembly. "Our candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff had done a good job in the area, the people know him well because he had served the area as a manager in the South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar). "I want to know them apart from introducing myself as BN candidate. I also want to know the problems faced by the voters here," he told a press conference at BN operations centre in Bukit Cekati here. Aziz, who is Gua Musang Umno division secretary, also refuted claims that the BN election machinery for Galas by-election was too slow. He said the party machinery was actually giving more focus on small gatherings which would enable them to understand the people's problems and needs. "From the feedback that I personally gathered from voters, they are frustrated with the Pas state government's failure to issue land titles and provide affordable homes for them," he said. Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan who was present said BN would continue with its present approach, which was to hold dozens of small gatherings at different polling districts daily. "We will use these gatherings to explain on BN government's development plan and counter all the allegations made by the opposition. "It's more effective compared to big ceramahs," he said. However, he said no gatherings would be held tonight as to allow BN campaigners and voters here to watch the Malaysia Cup final match between Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. He said BN would put giant projector screens at 14 locations as to allow the people here to watch the final match live. MALAYSIA appear favourites, on paper, to win the mixed team title in the Asian Junior Championships but China, as usual, are unknown entities and will be the team to watch out for when the event begins in Lucknow, India today. The Malaysian squad that lost 3-2 to China in the final in Kuala Lumpur last year are, except for Ow Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng, in Lucknow and should secure a place in the final on Tuesday. Malaysia are in Group D with India, Vietnam and Iran and should qualify for the quarter-finals without much trouble. They play Iran in their opening tie today. The team have the best opportunity to secure the team title, last won in 2007, with boys' singles Zulfadli Zulkifli, boys' doubles Nelson Heg-Teo Ee Yi and girls' doubles Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean providing Malaysia a genuine opportunity to upstage China. Last year's individual champion, Huang Yuxiang will be the main drawcard for China who have many new faces but the final is likely to be a close affair. Maria poised to regain crown Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:38 AM PDT MARIA Sharapova will attempt to complete her long journey back from the wilderness at Wimbledon today when she takes on Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova for the women's singles crown. The 24-year-old Russian fifth seed is the overwhelming favourite to reclaim the title that she won for the first time in 2004, when as a fresh-faced teenager she took the All England Club by storm. Maria's victory in SW19 seven years ago was followed by further Grand Slam titles at the Australian and US Opens by the time she turned 21, a period that also saw her rise to world number one. But Maria's march to the summit of women's tennis has been blown off course since 2007, when a serious shoulder injury led to a long lay-off which led many to wonder if she could ever be the same player. Yet this season has provided the first solid proof that Maria is ready once more to fulfil her vast potential, with a semi-final run at the French Open followed by her serene progress into the Wimbledon final. With Serena and Venus Williams showing signs of decline, Justine Henin retired and Kim Clijsters injured, there is a vacancy at the top of the women's game that Maria looks equipped to fill. Maria admitted she had endured dark days in 2008 and 2009, when she was struggling back from shoulder surgery and she dropped out of the top 100. "There were doubts because I had many expectations on when I would come back. I set myself certain goals and I never really met any of them, to be honest," she said. "So that was frustrating. "You're going to have certain doubts when you go through something like that knowing that not too many players have recovered fully." Maria has yet to drop a set en route to this year's final, and confidently disposed of the big-serving German wildcard Sabine Lisicki in the semi-final, winning 6-4, 6-3. Maria is bracing for a sterner challenge from Petra in today's final however, the 21-year-old Czech challenger who is appearing in a Grand Slam final for the first time. "I expect her to be a really tough opponent because she's a really good grass court player," said Maria, who won her only previous meeting with Petra on hard court at Memphis last year. "She's also a lefty, which on grass is very tricky. It will be tough. She's been playing really good tennis." Petra is the first left-hander to make the final at the All England Club since her childhood inspiration Martina Navratilova in 1990. "I saw Martina in the locker room and she wished me good luck. I'm so happy but I don't really believe I am in the final," said Petra, who upset fourth seed Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the final. Victoria believes Petra is capable of bucking the odds for a second time when she faces Maria. "I think she can beat anybody any day, because right now she has really good game.
