Strong quake hits Banda Sea, Indonesia Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:06 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Banda Sea, Indonesia at 5.06am today. The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement today the quake's epicentre was 377km southeast of Ambon, Indonesia and 1,808km southeast of Tawau, Sabah. Meanwhile, a moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on scale occurred at Halmahera, Indonesia at 6.27am. The quake's epicentre was 290km southeast of Manado, Indonesia and 1,079 southeast of Kunak, Sabah. Lynas plans next phase of Kuantan plant Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:34 PM PDT Lynas plans next phase of Kuantan plant MELBOURNE: Rare earths supplier, Lynas Corporation Ltd's Malaysian subsidiary, will spend up to US$210 million on the second phase of construction of the planned refinery plant in Kuantan, Pahang. The Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported that Lynas Malaysia had signed a letter of award with Thai engineering company, Toyo-Thai Corporation, for the second phase of work on the Lynas advanced materials plant at the Gebeng Industrial Estate in Kuantan. The letter of award is for a fixed lump-sum price of between US$180 million and US$210 million. Subject to the receipt of approvals, construction is scheduled for completion in the last three months of 2012. Completion of the first phase of the advanced materials plant is expected by the end of the year, AAP said. Earlier this month Lynas shares plunged because of media reports the plant could be delayed by one to two years. Lynas denied the reports. The company mines 15 metallic elements which are used in electronics, computers and many green electrical products. McLaren mishaps leave them straggling Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:55 AM PDT LONDON: A weekend of blunders at the British Grand Prix has left McLaren bosses red-faced, with their hopes of catching Red Bull in the Formula One championship all but gone. The mishaps began on Saturday when Lewis Hamilton qualified in 10th after being given the wrong tyres in qualifying and pessimistic team principal Martin Whitmarsh publicly acknowledged that their car is just not fast enough. While Hamilton defied that gloomy forecast to weave his way through the field up to a podium position at one stage, a fuel shortage forced him to slow down and finish in fourth. Jenson Button fared even worse, with a botched pit-stop leading to his retirement 12 laps from the end. SALUTE TO THE CORPS Posted: 11 Jul 2011 11:16 AM PDT SALUTE TO THE CORPS 1,024 undergraduate volunteer police corps end their training in style with the passing-out parade IN a ceremony steeped in Royal Malaysian Police tradition, 1,024 undergraduate volunteer police corps, otherwise known as Suksis, ended their training in a passing-out parade at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently. It was the seventh annual graduation held since the corps programme for undergraduates was established in 2005. The participants, hailing from 19 institutions of higher learning in the country, took part in the day-long parade and certificate-presentation ceremony attended by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar. Also present were Federal police logistics director Commissioner Datuk Pahlawan Zulkifli Abdullah, Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, and National Suksis Corps commandant, with the honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner, Professor Datuk Dr Rujhan Mustafa, who represented the Higher Education Ministry. UTM was represented by vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang and the university's Suksis Corp commandant, with the honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner, Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Tajudin Ninggal. There were 770 participants in the passing-out parade, which signified the end of their training as Suksis Corps officers with the honorary entry-level rank of Inspector. At the parade, the IGP inspected the guard-of-honour led by Hamzah Harjono. Later, a four-man police commando team from the VAT 69 detachmen in portable aerial gliders flew the flags and colours of Malaysia, Johor, the Royal Malaysian Police and UTM. The undergraduates were from UTM, Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam, Universiti Teknologi Mara Penang, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Melaka, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. Ismail said the corps programme had seen an increase in participation since its inception. "The response has been encouraging, and the programme will hopefully assist the police in achieving its objectives in the long-term," he said. He also expressed his confidence that the next generation of Royal Malaysian Police leaders, and even the next IGP, could come from the ranks of the corps. Those who have completed the programme are encouraged to join the force as probationary inspectors. However, like any police officer candidate, they will have to undergo the same training. Rujhan said the corps initiative was an innovative programme that enhanced cooperation between the educational universities and the force. This is the first time UTM is hosting the Suksis Corp passing-out parade. The host was UM in Kuala Lumpur last year. The Suksis Corps, which is similar to the police volunteer programme, is the brainchild of former prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after his visit to UUM on Feb 4, 1999 as deputy prime minister. Anwar deserves an Oscar, says Muhyiddin Posted: 11 Jul 2011 05:45 PM PDT BETONG: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should get an Oscar award. He said the opposition leader had made the injury he received in Saturday's illegal street demonstration worse than it seemed. He said A n wa r 's injuries could have been selfinflicted to give him an excuse to discredit the government and the police. "Anwar should be given an Oscar for making what is not true look like the truth. We expected him to twist the facts to suit his goals," Muhyiddin said after attending the national-level Gawai Dayak open house at Rumah Wilson Begat Anak Bakir, in Penom, Ulu Paku, here. Anwar was said to have suffered a bruise on his head and a cut leg as a result of police firing tear gas at protesters near where he was. He said the chaos that broke out caused him to fall. "I saw him on YouTube looking frail in a hospital bed. An hour later, I was told he was up and about, at the home of the protester who had died, paying his last respects and looking fine and healthy." Muhyiddin said he had expected Anwar and the opposition to capitalise on the incident as "this was not the first time (it had happened)". "There were no extreme police actions in the area, nor was he attacked by the police or targeted by the police." He said police were investigating the circumstances that led to Anwar getting injured. "Did he fall because of police action? Was it selfinflicted or did he walk into a glass wall?" He said policewould make a statement on Anwar's injury and the death of protester Baharudin Ahmad. Muhyiddin said Anwar, the opposition and rally organisers Bersih had distorted the facts on what had happened during the rally. "We expected it. We knew from the beginning that it would happen." He praised the police for showing "great restraint" in their handling of the rally. He said the death of the demonstrator was not because of police brutality, as claimed by the opposition. He said the opposition distorted the death to gain sympathy by portraying the government and the police as brutal. Muhyiddin said street demonstrations were not part of Malaysian culture and would never be as the majority of people were against them. "It is not something we do. So what happened shows that they (the protesters) do not have respect for the law." Haze unlikely to clear soon Posted: 11 Jul 2011 11:32 AM PDT 2011/07/12 By Roy See Wei Zhi news@nst.com.my The haze did not deter these children from having fun at the KLCC playground in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. KUALA LUMPUR: The current hazy conditions in the Klang Valley and Negri Sembilan will not be going away anytime soon. No rain has been forecast today for the central region, with rain expected only in east Johor and south Perak. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) said the haze that had so far engulfed the three states and parts of Johor, was caused by raging fires in Sumatra and parts of Borneo. A large portion of Seremban was engulfed yesterday morning, reducing visibility to between 200 and 300 metres in certain areas, including stretches of the Kuala Lumpur- Seremban Expressway. Although the air quality had not reached hazardous levels in the town, the State Health Department advised those with respiratory illnesses to remain indoors. In Senai, flight operations at Sultan Ismail International Airport were disrupted early yesterday due to low visibility caused by the haze. MMD central forecast office's principal assistant director, Amir Zudi, said apart from east Johor and south Perak, there would be no rainfall in the rest of Peninsular Malaysia today. He said this meant there would be no immediate respite from the haze. "The haze effects will linger for sometime since it is not going to rain today. It was also dry yesterday," he said. The Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index revealed the air quality in 37 out of 51 areas in the country were classified as "moder - at e " when measured at 7am yesterday. There are five levels of classifications — good, moderate, unhealthy, very unhealthy and hazardous. A ParticulateMatter (PM-10) reading of 51 to 100 is classified as "moderate ". This was confirmed by directorgeneral of health Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman who said the quality was down but had not reached hazardous levels yet. He added that the ministry was currently liaising with the DOE for further updates about the haze situation but as for now, the air quality was still at a normal level. The last time the country was hit with severe hazy conditions was in 2005. Port Klang and Kuala Selangor were declared to be in a state of emergency when PM-10 readings went as high as 500. The 2005 haze, caused by massive forest fires from neighbouring countries, was the worst that had hit Malaysia since 1998, where services across the country were crippled. Bid to call Syed Hamid Albar over CD seizure dismissed Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:55 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today dismissed a Christian woman's application to cross-examine the then home minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar over the seizure of compact discs (CDs) containing Christian religious teachings which used the word, "Allah". Justice Datuk Rohana Yusuf ruled that Syed Hamid's affidavit pertaining to the case was sufficient to be used in the judicial review proceedings to explain why the CDs were seized. Senior Federal Counsel Arik Sanusi Yeop Johari and Azizan Md Arshad, representing Syed Hamid and the government, told reporters that in the affidavit, Syed Hamid had stated that the reasons for the seizure were to protect national security and public order. Arik Sanusi said the court also agreed with Syed Hamid's affidavit on a 1986 cabinet directive which prohibited non-Muslims from using certain words such as the word, "Allah". Justice Rohana made the ruling in chambers after allowing a preliminary objection raised by Syed Hamid and the government on grounds that the application was filed out of time by 15 months after leave was given by the court. Quake rocks southern Kuriles, no tsunami threat Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:51 PM PDT TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 5.4 points on the Richter scale hit the Southern Kuriles on Tuesday, reported Russian news agency Itar-Tass. According to Japan's meteorological department, there is no tsunami threat. The epicentre was located 44.9 degrees of north latitude and 151.8 degrees of east longitude in the Pacific Ocean east of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido. The quake focus was located at the depth of about 10 kilometers under the ocean bed. Falcao fires Colombia into last eight Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT SANTA FE: Colombia marched into the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Sunday after a 2-0 win over Bolivia wrapped up top spot in Group A. With the best two third-placed finishers at the event also reaching the quarters Colombia's win spelt joy for Chile, Peru and Venezuela as they all have four points and cannot now be caught by the side which will take third spot in Group A. That team will be either hosts Argentina or Costa Rica. One of that pair will take runners-up spot and the side left in third cannot equal the tally of Chile, Peru or Venezuela, allowing that trio to join Colombia in the next phase. Porto hitman Radamel Falcao put the contest to bed in the first half hour with a crisp opener on 14 minutes and a penalty after 26 minutes as the Colombians hit the ground running. Colombian coach Hernan Dario Gomez said his side had stuck to their game plan and been rewarded. "We put them under early pressure, went out for the early goal, and we got it," Gomez noted. Colombia's Wigan star Hugo Rodallega was also pleased. "We are extremely satisfied with how the group phase has gone. We came to Argentina with a goal (to qualify from the group) and we have done just that." The cafeteros had already seen off Costa Rica and had the better of a draw with hosts Argentina. They completed an impressive first phase showing against a Bolivian side who started well enough in holding the Argentinians before flunking their Costa Rican test. After Falcao's rip-roaring opening, Adrian Ramos, Freddy Guarin and Dayro Moreno all went close for the Colombians as they threatened to overwhelm their rivals before they took their foot off the accelerator after the break. After Falcao sent his spotkick hard and low past Bolivian keeper Carlos Arias, who had saved a penalty in the previous game gainst the Costa Ricans, the Colombians celebrated by holding aloft a shirt belonging to David Ospina, their usual first choice keeper.
