Bangkok residents urged to evacuate from high risk flood areas Posted: 27 Oct 2011 10:36 PM PDT BANGKOK -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has advised people living in all localities of the Tawee Watana District, now highly at risk of floods, to evacuate from the area, where floodwater has kept rising overnight, reports Thai News Agency (TNA). The BMA acknowledged on Friday that the City Authority has also kept a specially-close watch on the water situation in Bangkhen area, where flows of floodwater from upstream provinces have been approaching. Earlier, the BMA urged people in heavily-flooded Bang Plad and Charansanitwong areas to evacuate to safe grounds, as the water in the nearby Chao Phraya River has been overflowing during a high tide period late this month, now inundating other areas along and adjacent to the main river as well, including Pin Klao, Arun Amarin, Ta Prachan, Ta Chang and even roads surrounding Sanam Luang ceremonial ground and the Grand Palace, as high as 20-50 centimetres. Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra travelled by boats to inspect more areas at risk of floods in the capital, including Siriraj Hospital, the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall and the Rama VIII Bridge, as well as adjacent areas, where flood prevention measures have been fortified. Prince Nayef named Saudi's heir Posted: 27 Oct 2011 10:29 PM PDT BEIRUT, Lebanon -- King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has appointed Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz as his heir, the state television reported today. "We chose His Royal Highness Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz as crown prince," Russian news agency Itar-Tass quoted the royal court as saying in a statement. The decision was made after a meeting of the Allegiance Council, a royal family body. Prince Nayef, 78, has been Saudi Interior Minister since 1975. His brother Crown Prince Sultan died of cancer in the United States a week ago. Aussie hiker dies in Johor forest outing Posted: 27 Oct 2011 10:56 AM PDT 2011/10/28 By Rizalman Hammim news@nst.com.my LABIS: A hiking adventure turned into a nightmare for four men when their friend died of suspected heart failure at the Sungai Bantang Forest Reserve in Bekok, near here, on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Chris Burchill, 45, from Australia. The rest of the hikers were South African Marc Linneger, 35, Briton James Fraser, 45, Alan Chadwich, 33, and 54-year-old identified only as Jonathan, both from Australia. Burchill was believed to have suffered a heart attack when the group was reportedly lost in the forest reserve. Segamat police chief Superintendent Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said, police had classified the case as sudden death and were awaiting the post-mortem report before proceeding with investigations. The five entered the forest reserve at 8am on Wednesday before one of them contacted a friend in Singapore at about 3pm, telling him that Burchill had died and that they were lost. "The friend then contacted us and a rescue operation was immediately mounted," said Majid. He said the operation, which involved the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, Rela, Civil Defence Department, the Forestry Department and local villagers, began at 3.30pm but was called off just after midnight. "We resumed the search at 8.30am and found the lost hikers two hours later," he said. The four friends were seen sitting around Burchill's body. Majid said they encountered problems extricating the body and leading the hikers downhill due to heavy rain and rough terrain. The rescuers and the victims reached the base camp at 2.15pm where the other four hikers were given medical attention. They refused to comment on the incident. Burc hill 's body was sent to the Segamat Hospital where the postmortem would be conducted. Australian Allenby fired an eight-under 63 as flight-mate Vegas shot a 64 in benign early morning conditions before rain interrupted play late in the afternoon at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Seri Kembangan. By the time the heavens opened, Allenby and Vegas were already in the club-house with only Fredrik Jacobson proving a threat among the late starters as the Swede came home in 65. The left winger was one of the first ones at the training ground and his readiness to train even surprised coach Azraai Khor Abdullah, who was not expecting him to arrive early. Kunanlan has sacrificed Deepavali celebrations with his family for training, and this shows he is determined to help Negri win the Malaysia Cup title tomorrow. "I have promised my family and friends a party if I return with the winner's medal on Saturday (tomorrow). I want a happy Deepavali and to have that, I need to give my 100 per cent in the match," said Kunanlan yesterday. "Everyone in the team has little time for matters outside the training ground. BRIGHTER DAYS AHEAD Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:20 AM PDT 2011/10/26 By Syed Umar Ariff and Ahmad Fairuz Othman Things are looking up for Danga City Mall which is fast becoming the hub for electronic gadgets THE quiet sections of Danga City Mall, with lots that have been left vacant for at least a year, may not spell the end of the shopping centre. The complex, which sits on 3.3ha of prime land just one kilometre from the city centre, was one of the most sought-after commercial properties in Johor Baru when it entered the market, fetching more than RM3,000 per sq ft (0.09 sq m). Originally known as the Best World Plaza, the RM240 million, seven-storey mall was badly hit by the Asian financial crisis and was forced to close down two years after its opening in 1996. And despite public perception that businesses are leaving in phases due to the lack of visitors and customers, one could be forgiven for the notion that the mall, that reopened in 2009, is just another newly-opened shopping centre. Following its promotion as the hub of electronic gadgets such as cell phones, computers and accessories, the mall has loyal customers frequenting its floors. Digital Valley is considered the busiest section in the mall, with people going in and out, buying the latest gadgets or purchasing the latest software for their machines. It has already attracted some of the biggest names in the IT industry such as Lenovo Concept Store, Panasonic Digital Centre, and Acer Computers. A sales assistant, who wished to be known as Zeti, said many shops on the floor where she worked had closed down, and this gave an impression that some traders were leaving. "While some traders have left, I see new businesses, such as a new beauty salon, setting up shop at the lower floors. "There has been word of traders from another shopping mall temporary relocating here while their premises are under renovations," said Zeti. At the same time, there are at least three stores selling second-hand items or collectibles for hobbyists. There is also a DJ academy for those interested in learning the art of turntabling. The TreasureStore buys, sells and rents secondhand novels, books and magazines for as low as RM1. There are similar shops selling old vinyl records, trinkets, costume jewellery and souvenir items. There are traditional Malay clothing such as baju kurung and baju kebaya, on the ground floor. But business is all about location. Adeline Kuah, who runs a thrift shop on the mall's fourth floor, said the location of her business does not attract a steady flow of new customers. The former nurse, in her 60s, continues to receive regular customers and the occasional newcomer who chances upon her shop. "There was a Canadian woman who discovered my shop as she was browsing on the fourth floor. She was pleasantly surprised to discover there are thrift shops in Johor Baru. Later, she gave some of her old shoes to my shop," she said. Eateries are available at every corner, with a food court on the lower ground floor. Diners flock to the food court during lunchtime as it offers a variety of cuisine, ranging from nasi campur and western food, to Penang cuisine such as char kway teow and soup noodles. The Excite Fitness Centre, which occupies 1,486 sq m on level five, is well equipped. It has become a favourite for fitness buffs because of its affordable membership fee, high-end facilities, instructors and classes catering to people of every fitness level. Danga City Mall Sdn Bhd spokesman Datuk Lim Kang Hoo said the mall has been designed and repositioned as Johor Baru's premier retail complex. Popularly known as "Iron Willy" or "Willy" among peers and fans, Hairmiwilly's daredevil stunts include being locked in a metal chest with a 1.8 metre-long python, walking on broken glass, swallowing balls of fire, piercing a 10cm nail through his nose, and the "chainsaw stunt". All performances by the artiste will be sponsored by Impact Music and Entertainment. The 29-year-old whose stage costume includes a white shirt, and a black coat, tie and trousers, sports a Mohican hairdo. He started working as a stuntman six years ago. Hairmiwilly said he idolises magician David Copperfield. "I never missed watching Copperfield's performances on TV during my childhood. "He was so good at magic stunts. "I aspired to be an illusionist since I was eight years old," said the degree holder in business management. "Initially, I performed for families and at schools," he said. Hairmiwilly learnt the tricks of his trade by being in contact with experienced illusionists via the Internet. Still, the magician can be nervous before a show, if the feat is especially difficult. He recalls one such feat -- the "strait jacket escape" -- which he performed for Singapore TV three years ago. "I was given only two minutes to free myself from the jacket. "Sweating profusely, l struggled relentlessly and managed to free myself within 59 agonising seconds, which seemed like an eternity. After that, he was hailed as the "Houdini of Asia", (after Harry Houdini, the renown American escape artiste of the 19th and 20th century). Haj pilgrims encouraged to pay penalty at counters Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:17 PM PDT MECCA: Haj pilgrims are encouraged to pay for the 'dam' (penalty) and 'korban' (sacrifice) at Tabung Haji (TH) financial counters to avoid any confusion regarding these obligations. TH Guidance Operations Manager Nukman Fadzil said the process of slaughtering sacrfice animals and penalty payments must be carried out according to religious requirements. He said pilgrims could pay for the penalty themselves or find the livestock for slaughter, but they must meet various criteria in terms of value, size and age of the livestock. "Our concern is that if the penalty is paid to other quarters, questions may arise on the trustworthiness of the person who performs the dam," he told Tabung Haji media personnel, here. He said TH, with the cooperation of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), would take responsibility over the penalty and sacrifice to ensure the payment of the haj penalty and slaughter were smoothly implemented. Storm destroys 10 houses, a workshop Posted: 26 Oct 2011 10:54 PM PDT ALOR SETAR: Ten houses and a workshop were damaged when a heavy storm lashed through Batu 3, Jalan Langgar, near here, yesterday afternoon. All the roofs and walls of the houses and workshop were torn off in the incident at about 5.30pm. A victim, Shukri Ibrahim said the storm which was accompanied by a heavy downpour tore off the roof of his house as well as those belonging to his neighbours. "I and several family members, fearing that our house could be crushed by a tree, left our house for safety," he told reporters when met yesterday. Shukri said he was grateful for his family's safety although he had minor injuries in the leg while escaping from the storm. Malaysia, Australia stand by refugee swap deal Posted: 26 Oct 2011 09:17 PM PDT PERTH: Australia and Malaysia affirmed their commitment to a refugee swap deal Thursday despite a political stalemate in Canberra that has left it in limbo. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak met his Australian counterpart Julia Gillard on the sidelines of a Commonwealth summit in Perth to discuss the so-called "Malaysia Solution" agreed in May. Under the plan Australia was to send 800 boatpeople to Malaysia in exchange for 4,000 of the Southeast Asian nation's registered refugees in what was intended to be a deterrent to people-smugglers. But the swap was shelved this month after the High Court struck it down and opposition lawmakers refused to back legal amendments to allow it to proceed. A spokeswoman for Gillard said the two leaders had "agreed on the importance of regional solutions to the challenge of irregular migration". "Both prime ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the Malaysia-Australia transfer agreement as an innovative and effective approach to combatting people smuggling," the spokeswoman said. Although the High Court rejected the deal, Gillard believes it could still be revived if opposition lawmakers agree to migration law amendments, which would then have to pass the left-leaning Greens-dominated upper house. Such an outcome is seen as unlikely, and Canberra has committed to accepting the 4,000 refugees from Malaysia regardless of whether the deal proceeds. Najib had earlier warned that international cooperation was the only way to combat the region's people-smuggling problems and refused to back down on his deal with Australia. "Merely announcing that the arrangement was being discussed contributed to a 50 percent fall in the number of boatpeople heading to Australia in the first half of this year," he wrote in an editorial for Australian newspapers. "I believe that, once up and running, it would have had a serious impact on the exploitative actions of people smugglers." The Malaysian premier said it would be "easy to give up, to tell ourselves that we tried but the problem was too big, too politically difficult to deal with". "The people-smuggling would go on, the boats would continue to sail. Heartless traffickers would continue to take everything from desperate people — their money, their dignity and, all too often, their lives," he said.
