Traditional food of ethnic groups to be maintained Posted: 10 Jul 2011 07:45 PM PDT BELURAN: The National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) Sabah has included the ethnic traditional food fair in the state as among the main programmes of the department in an effort to preserve the traditional foods for the future generation. Its director, Ramlah Amir said 13 traditional food fair of the various ethnic groups would be held in the state in the urban and rural areas involving members of the public and private sectors. She said they would be implemented under the programme to popularise arts and culture under the Ministry of Culture, Information and Communication which had been implemented since 2006 nationwide. "The staging of the traditional food fair under this programme is to ensure that the traditional food of every ethnic group in the country are not forgotten by the future generation and efforts to preserve them must be carried out together," she said at the closing of the Kadazandusun Labuk Traditional Food Fair at Kampung Kuala Sapi, near here last night. FLYING winger Theo Walcott is excited to be on his first foray into Asia as Arsenal arrive in Kuala Lumpur today for their pre-season tour. The Gunners, making their first visit to the Far East in 12 years, will play Malaysia on Wednesday before going on to China for a match against Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday. Luxury brands riding high on stock market Posted: 09 Jul 2011 11:02 PM PDT PARIS: Purveyors of luxury and indulgence flirted with record stock market valuations this week as investors looked past a litany of bad economic figures and the eurozone debt crisis to focus on the fundamentals. Dealers said successful share floats for such fashion icons as Prada in Hong Kong — a key market for investors and buyers alike — and Salvatore Ferragamo in Milan boosted interest and offered the prospect of further gains. Asia shines like a beacon for the companies, where a fast growing middle class is chasing the good life as emerging economies in China, India and across the region throw off wealth as never before. Upcoming first half results are also expected to be stellar, with many expecting an exceptional performance from the likes of LVMH, which runs a stable of global brand names from perfumes to wines and champagne. "2011 could be a record year in regards to margins, sales and share prices," Francois Arpels, chief executive at investment bank Bryan Garnier said. The sector does look promising. According to consultancy Bain & Company, the global market for luxury goods and services should grow by eight percent this year, pushed by 25 percent gains in China and 15 percent in the rest of the Asia Pacific. Global banking giant HSBC — which knows Asia first hand — forecasts a 15 percent increase in demand for luxury goods in 2011 and an 11 percent jump in 2012. Even Japanese sales have rebounded since the devastating March earthquake caused such loss of life and damage to the economy, HSBC analysts said. The luxury sector, once seen as vulnerable to the first signs of trouble, appears to have taken on an extraordinary resilience in recent years, as shown by its performance after the start of the global economic slump in 2008. Better yet, luxury companies used the opportunities offered by the world recession "to refocus on leading products," said Arpels. Bigger companies have built up their cash resources and are on the acquisition trail, another feature drawing in investors. Among recent deals was the LVMH buyout of Bulgari in March and the building up of a major stake in Hermes while fierce rival PPR acquired a controlling stake in Sowind Group, the Swiss watchmaker. Luxury brands have caught the eye of investment funds too. Investment company Eurazeo bought up 45 percent of the Moncler luxury textile group in early June and Jimmy Choo, the shoe company, was snapped up by the Labelux Group. "Even if the fundamentals are solid, speculation is going strong in the sector," said Mesmin of Cheuvreux, citing the case of Hermes. "Investors are betting on an LVMH takeover at a high price," Mesmin said, noting that Tod's and Burberry were benefiting from similar speculative interest. The port town of Ofunato, Iwate prefecture, saw a 10-centimetre(four-inch) tsunami at 10:44 am (0144 GMT), the agency said. The agency issued a tsunami advisory for Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the main island of Honshu at 09:57 am (0057 GMT). No damage has been reported from the tsunami and quake. Television footage of the port in Ofunato did not show any visible sign of the tsunami, with the water surface seemingly calm and flat. The agency issued the tsunami advisory shortly after the offshore quake in the same general area as the 9.0-magnitude quake of March 11 which triggered a massive tsunami. The US Geological Agency, which also estimated the magnitude at 7.1, said the offshore quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles). Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it had not received reports of any fresh problems at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the latest earthquake. "We are still checking details, but cooling of reactors is continuing," a TEPCO spokeswoman said. But the company told work crews near the water to seek higher ground due to the tsunami advisory. The Japanese weather agency expected a small tsunami of up to 50 centimetres (20 inches) along the affected region. All four teams now have one win and a loss from their first two games meaning the honours will be decided in the third and final round, to be played in Lautoka, in Fiji, on Wednesday. The hosts recovered from their surprise 45-21 hiding by Tonga in the first round to beat defending champions Samoa 36-18 while Japan, beaten first up by Samoa, held on for a narrow 28-27 win over Tonga. The match was sealed for Japan in the third quarter when they posted two converted tries to turn a 14-17 deficit at half-time into a 28-17 lead and they were then strong enough defensively to hold out the desperate Tongans. Captain Takeshi Kikutani scored the first of the game-breaking tries when he crashed through a disorganised Tongan pack who had been wrong-footed by diminutive scrumhalf Fumiaki Tanaka. Play had no sooner resumed when Koji Taira cut through the Tongan defence. Its open house on July 16 from 11am to 3pm will showcase the new range of products at its store along Jalan Sungai Chat between Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar and the Mawar Complex. Jaro Green products are made from recycled materials or sustainable sources, while the Heritage products reflect the country's multicultural community. Jaro was founded in 1952 as a workshop for the disabled. Committee members Datin Patricia Lim and Annie Thomas worked with volunteer Chris Parry, a former New York-based graphic artist who recently returned to live in Johor Baru, on the new product ranges. "I'm looking to local culture as inspiration," said Parry, who is now Jaro's creative consultant. "Some of our products are not only decorative but functional as well. "We have specific products for special occasions such as Hari Raya and Deepavali and also items that tourists like," said Parry, pointing to the pretty purses and make-up bags designed in Indian brocade. He also thanked the Rotary Club of Johor Baru for its generous donation and Metropoint College Johor Baru for helping to upgrade the computer system and installing a computer in the store. Jaro depends on volunteers to make the products and run the business. So it welcomes the support of people with handicraft skills and those with experience in marketing, sales and promotions. Members of the public can expect an evening of classical music by three musicians led by Tan Guang Yu, 35, who will be performing pieces by Beethoven, Franck and Bach. Guang Yu first played the piano when he was eight, but found his passion in violin when he was 12. "The violin belonged to my father, the late Tan Hooi Song," said the violinist who is here on holiday from the United States. He is completing his doctoral degree in violin from Michigan State University. "Those who want to know more about western classical music should come to the recital," he said. Hooi Song was a musician and composer from Johor Baru. He taught music at the Foon Yew High School, Johor Baru. Guang Yu's 27-year-old sister, Guang Mei, who is also the recital's organising chairman, will be playing the Double Concerto in D minor with him and an invited guest from Taiwan, Ming Ching Wu. Guang Mei is a music instructor with the South Front Art & Music House. She was earlier trained under three prominent music instructors, beginning with her father and two others from Malaysia and Singapore. She also majored in music in Fu Jen University, New Taipei City, in Taiwan and in the fine arts at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. She then went on to work on a violin project with renowned violinist Min Lee from Singapore. "I hope the audience will enjoy our performance. This show is to give people in Johor a taste of Western classical music," she said. Pianist Ming Ching Wu, who will be playing a piece from Provokief, began playing the piano when she was eight. She bagged first prize in a piano competition in Taiwan in 2005. She is now working towards a doctorate in music from the Eastman School of Music in New York, USA.
