FELINE PAGEANT Posted: 10 Jul 2011 10:18 AM PDT FELINE PAGEANT 2011/07/10 By Jassmine Shadiqe Cat owners showed off their pets in a show in Perling Mall recently CATS stole the limelight at a beauty pageant for them at Perling Mall Johor Baru, where they "strutted on the runaway" to claim titles such as Most Handsome Male Cat, Most Adorable Female Cat, Most Lyrical Eyes, Most Unique Voice and Most Fluffy Hair. The mall co-organised the "Kitty Cat Show" with the Malaysia Cat Club, with the event attracting over 50 pet owners who came with their precious companions. Club president Khalid Rashid said the club formed in 1971 has over 4,000 members nationwide. "A show like this was last held in Johor about a decade ago. We now want to organise similar shows in all states," said Khalid, who said most of the clubs were held in Kuala Lumpur. Most cats shows are required to have an international affiliation and deemed a pedigree event, but the Kitty Cat Show was purely a fun competition. The were 11 sub-categories under the three main categories of Short Hair, Long Hair and Kitten. The winners of each category walked away with cat food, biscuits and grooming sets. Louis, owned by Norazalan Azahari, won everyone's heart as it purred its way to win the Most Vocal Cat and Most Active Cat titles. Tomok, Norazalan's other cat, walked away with the Most Fluffy Hair title. The winner of the Most Handsome Male Cat under the Long Hair category was Monky, owned by Zainuddin Sahar, while the Most Adorable Female title under the same category went to Amelia Cortesa, owned by Mohd Effindy Saniran. The Most Lyrical Eyes title went to Evalina Mendosa, owned by Hanafi Mohd Yusof, while Kazuya was chosen as the Most Unique Pattern, whose owner is Yusoff Abdul Rahman. Owner Samsuria Abdullah had a great day at the event as his three cats Suria Cinta, Suria Kasanova and Suria Rimba walked away with titles under the Short Hair and Kitten categories. Suria Cinta won both the Most Shining Hair and the Most Active Cat titles under the Short Hair category, while Suria Kasanova won the Most Unique Pattern title and Suria Rimba, the Most Playful Kitten in the Kitten Category. An adoption drive was also held by the Johor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which brought along abandoned stray cats that had to be neutered to be adopted. Those who adopted the cats or kittens were given free cat food and tips on how to care for the pets. The event also had experts sharing tips on grooming and caring of cats. Among the topics shared with owners were the importance of neutering their cats. Johor SPCA vice-chairman Joseph Chia said responsible cat owners will neuter or spay their cats. This is to ensure that cats will not be overpopulated and end up in shelters or worst, abandoned. He also said spaying can reduce hormone-driven behaviours among pets. The show was a huge success with many hoping that it would become an annual event. Perling Mall advertising and promotion officer Sharifah Fairuz Hashim said the show was organised after taking into consideration patrons who did not like cats. "We chose a corner, a place where the show's activities will not disturb our mall patrons, yet provide a suitable place for cats owners and their pets," she said. Souq BBU finds itself a ready market Posted: 10 Jul 2011 06:43 AM PDT Souq BBU finds itself a ready market 2011/07/10 By Syed Abdullah Syed Mohamed SINCE it began operations in May this year, the Souq BBU mini market in Jalan Padi Ria 13, Bandar Baru Uda (BBU), has seen brisk business. Customers, mainly residents of the neighbourhood, make a beeline as early as 7am to purchase groceries, especially perishable items like fresh vegetables, fish and meat. Fully owned by Koperasi Masjid Jamek BBU Bhd (BBU Mosque Co-operative Bhd), Souq -- or "shop" in Arabic -- has become the preferred place for shoppers especially housewives and senior mosque congregators due to its strategic location directly opposite the mosque. Souq offers a wide range of dairy products, bread, fruits, beverages, dry goods, canned, condiments, spices, frozen, paper products, and personal care items. Parking space is ample around the mini mart and for those who work at or visit the mosque regularly, it's just a short walk across to purchase their favourite items. "We arranged the items to satisfy our clients. The dry good items are placed at the front section of our shop, while fish, vegetable and meat are located at the rear," said Souq supervisor, Mohd Rumali Sahar. Rumali said the idea to set up the mini market was proposed by a few members of the co-operative early this year. The previous owner of the two-unit double-storey shophouse had decided to vacate the premise as he wanted to retire from his business. A special meeting was held by the mosque co-operative's working committee and all members agreed on the takeover. Rumali, a member of the committee who has ample experience in business, was nominated to steer the proposed mini market's management. At present, the co-operative has a membership of almost 500. Now, besides running his own business, Rumali also takes care of the retail kiosk at the mosque, and the nursery and fruits stall opposite Mydin supermarket in BBU. Rumali said the supply of fresh fish, meat and vegetables are acquired through reliable agencies like FAMA, Sedili (Kota Tinggi) and the Farmers' Association. The management also plans to distribute these items in bulk to interested retailers, stall owners and restaurants around BBU. For members of the BBU mosque co-operative, the working committee will propose a point system so that items at the mart can be redeemed according to the total number of points accumulated. Meanwhile, the management has constructed five more partitions in the mini mart to be rented out to interested parties. Souq BBU opens daily from 7am until 10.30pm. PM leaves for a two-day visit to Turkmenistan Posted: 10 Jul 2011 07:40 PM PDT SEPANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has left for Turkmenistan for a two-day visit on the invitation of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The aircraft carrying Najib and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, took off from the Bunga Raya complex of KL International Airport at 8.30am. Present to see him off were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan. This is Najib's first visit to the Central Asian country since becoming the prime minister on April 3, 2009. Najib is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Berdimuhamedov in capital city of Ashgabat. Najib and Berdimuhamedov would jointly open the Petronas gas terminal in Kiyanli, Turkmenbasy, about 600km from Ashgabat. In a statement, Wisma Putra said Petronas' involvement in the country's oil and gas sector was an important component in the Kuala Lumpur-Ashgabat cooperation. The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, trade, finance, investment and human capital development, the statement added. Malaysia-Turkmenistan to strengthen existing bilateral relations Posted: 10 Jul 2011 07:25 PM PDT ASHGABAT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will witness the signing of five documents that will further strengthen the existing close bilateral relations between both countries during his first official visit to Turkmenistan from July 11 to 12. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said the first document was the memorandum of cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce of Turkmenistan and the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia. The second was Gas Sales Agreement between Malaysia's national oil corporation, Petronas, and the state agency for management of use of hydrocarbon resources under the President of Turkmenistan and Turkmen Gas, Anifah told a press conference ahead of Najib's visit here. The third is a memorandum between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Turkmenistan on cooperation in the field of oil and gas and the fourth, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Turkmenistan on cooperation on foreign affairs issues. Anifah said the fifth was a joint Turkmenistan-Malaysia communiqué issued on the occasion of the official visit of Najib to Turkmenistan. This will be Najib's first official visit to Turkmenistan since becoming prime minister on April 3, 2009, at the invitation of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Najib, who will arrive here this afternoon, will be accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Anifah and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop during the visit. "And during the visit, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri (Najib) will hold bilateral discussions with the president on issues that are of common interest and common concern between Malaysia and Turkmenistan," Anifah said. Tomorrow, Najib and Berdimuhamedov will both inaugurate the Petronas Gas Terminal in Kiyanli, Turkmenbasy, about 600km from here. "The objective of this visit is also to reaffirm continuous and firm commitment to further strengthen our bilateral relations with Turkmenistan and also to broaden the framework of our bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interests and, of course, mutual benefits," Anifah added. He said Malaysia and Turkmenistan enjoyed close and warm relations since diplomatic relations were established in 1992. In view of the close relations, he said Malaysia had agreed to set up its mission (embassy) here in the near future. "We view Turkmenistan as a very strategic partner in Central Asia and we look forward to working closely with Turkmenistan and, of course, in areas that I've mentioned earlier, especially in oil and gas, of which our presence here is very much recognised," he said. On trade, he said there were ample opportunities available in Turkmenistan and although trade with Turkmenistan was relatively small currently, much could be done to increase the volume. In terms of trade relations, Turkmenistan is Malaysia's third largest trading partner in the Central Asian region. Total trade between the two countries in 2010 was recorded at US$29.75 million, compared to US$205.61 million in 2009. "There are ample of opportunities here, one is of course oil and gas, but there'll be other opportunities like they are very much in need of electrical and electronics (goods) and they are also talking about the possibility of giving opportunities to Malaysians to start industrial parks. "And this is why there will be a memorandum of understanding to be signed by chambers of commerce of both countries. And thereafter they will work out and see what are the possibilities. And Petronas is also looking towards working together with Turkmen Gas on the opportunities in other third countries," Anifah said. He said although Malaysia and Turkmenistan enjoyed good bilateral relations, they were not reflected in their bilateral trade. Traditional food of ethnic groups to be maintained Posted: 10 Jul 2011 07:45 PM PDT BELURAN: The National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) Sabah has included the ethnic traditional food fair in the state as among the main programmes of the department in an effort to preserve the traditional foods for the future generation. Its director, Ramlah Amir said 13 traditional food fair of the various ethnic groups would be held in the state in the urban and rural areas involving members of the public and private sectors. She said they would be implemented under the programme to popularise arts and culture under the Ministry of Culture, Information and Communication which had been implemented since 2006 nationwide. "The staging of the traditional food fair under this programme is to ensure that the traditional food of every ethnic group in the country are not forgotten by the future generation and efforts to preserve them must be carried out together," she said at the closing of the Kadazandusun Labuk Traditional Food Fair at Kampung Kuala Sapi, near here last night. FLYING winger Theo Walcott is excited to be on his first foray into Asia as Arsenal arrive in Kuala Lumpur today for their pre-season tour. The Gunners, making their first visit to the Far East in 12 years, will play Malaysia on Wednesday before going on to China for a match against Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday. Walcott, 22, said he is looking forward to playing in front of thousands of Arsenal fans in Malaysia and China. "I have never been there before and it will be a totally different experience and culture," the England international told Arsenal.com. "I'm really looking forward to the amount of support that's out there. I've heard rumours of 50,000 plus (fans) at an open training session, so that would be amazing! It's difficult for fans (in the Far East) to get to games, so hopefully, we can make the club proud." Walcott said Arsenal need to get off to a good start in the 2011-12 English Premier League, having been handed tough early assignments with trips to Newcastle and Manchester United and a home game with Liverpool besides their Champions League play-off in August. "It's nice to play them straight away because they might not be flying as they do towards the end of the season. He added: "A lot of teams look very strong now and it's not easy to win games home or away. But I'll be ready, I'm sure everyone else will be and I'm looking forward to playing football again." Arsenal's "wantaway" captain Cesc Fabregas has been omitted from their trip to Kuala Lumpur due to an injury. But local fans will be pleased that Samir Nasri, a target of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, will be coming. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Spaniard Fabregas, who has announced his intention of wanting to join European champions Barcelona, sustained a muscle strain and did not travel with the Gunners' 23-strong squad, who flew out of London yesterday.
