Musa calls for foreign investments in Sabah Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:42 PM PDT KOTA KINABALU: Sabah wants more foreign Islamic banks, especially from the Middle East, to invest in the state, said Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Aman. He said as the state continued to grow and prosper, it would offer vast investment opportunities. "Islamic banks from the Middle East would bring significant experience from the Gulf region and share this with local financial institutions," he said at the opening of Kuwait Finance House (M) Bhd''s (KFH Malaysia) branch here today. Also present was KFH Malaysia chief executive officer, Jamelah Jamaluddin. Musa said Sabah has undergone major developments in recent years and put in place business-friendly policies as well as various attractive incentives to ensure competitive and conducive environment for both local and foreign investors. He said the state government appreciated KFH Malaysia's efforts in bringing Islamic banking to the state and hoped that the setting up of its branch here would herald the start of a long and fruitful relationship with the people of Middle East. "It is hoped that this will encourage more people to go for syariah-based banking products and services. "Sabahans would benefit as there would be more opportunities and choices in Islamic banking products and services," he said. Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures. The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership. A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself. I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ". Frankly how many can do that ? This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example. Traits of great leader who make small people feel great. Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders. It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count. We should not trumpet about it. High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah. Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation. Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible. The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number. In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ? Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind. My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise. And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful. The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered. First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?. Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ? The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members. However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants. Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency,the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident. Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different. As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say,with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters. From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess. Zeti: Bank mergers good for Malaysia Posted: 30 Jun 2011 06:19 PM PDT Malaysia's central bank Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said consolidation among banks would be good for the country and help integrate the its financial system with other emerging economies. "We do envisage there will be future consolidations," Zeti said in an interview in London today. "If two or three large banks merge in our financial system, I think it is good for Malaysia as we venture into our next phase of development in our financial system where we become more integrated with the rest of the world." Her comments come days after CIMB Group Holdings Bhd and Malayan Banking Bhd, Malaysia's two biggest banks, scrapped rival talks to acquire RHB Capital Bhd, ending ambitions to create Southeast Asia's biggest lender. Local banks are seeking expansion amid intensifying competition as the central bank grants more licences to international lenders including Bank of China Ltd. "There will be more financial centres in emerging economies that will be highly connected with each other and this is important because it will lead to the better intermediation of funds across borders," she said. "If we are going to participate in that, we do need to have a few larger banks." Zeti said in April that the central bank will let market forces decide how many local lenders remain in the country should there be consolidation. Asked today if RHB should seek a new partner, she said the issue is "entirely up to RHB." Speaking on the sidelines of a conference hosted by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum and Lafferty Group, Zeti said the terms and conditions of any consolidation will be driven entirely by the private sector, though the central bank will set the parameters, one of which is that any transaction shouldn't "weaken the institution." The financial industry should support the real economy, not the other way round, she said. The Pelita Jaya striker's consistency and experience were key factors in Malaysia winning the AFF Cup last December and with several strikers in the team either having just recovered or still struggling with injury, progress to a second round clash with Singapore is far from assured. Safee will be greatly missed at the Taipeh Municipal Stadium but national coach K. Rajagobal believes there is enough firepower in the squad to overcome Taiwan after Wednesday's 2-1 win in Bukit Jalil gave Malaysia a narrow advantage in the tie. "Safee suffered an injury to the back of his knee and he won't play against Taiwan (on Sunday). Baddrol (Bakhtiar) missed a golden opportunity in the second half and we are very concerned with some players just having recovered from injury like Ahmad Fakri (Saarani) and Hadi (Yahya). The month-long Johor Baru Arts Festival promises yet another eclectic line-up of exciting shows IT'S that time of year when arts enthusiasts can expect another exciting and eclectic line-up of shows in the 8th Johor Baru Arts Festival. With the positive feedback from the previous outing, the Festival Village will once again be located on the grounds of the Sultan Ibrahim Building at Bukit Timbalan. The historical charm and magnificent architecture of this iconic building, built in 1940 during the colonial era, is the perfect foil for the city's annual arts fest. While this building is used as Johor's symbol for tourism, it was not accessible to the public for many years. The arts fest, however, provided the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the premises, and people are encouraged to bring their friends and families, and even their bicycles and tricycles to play and picnic on the idyllic grounds. With vehicles parked outside the premises, the grounds are a greener and safer place for everyone to enjoy. "This year's festival promises to be the most exciting yet," said Suzie Yap, the festival's director as she outlined the wide range of performances that include music, dance, musical theatre and film screenings. In the music category alone, there are a variety of jazz, classical, Indie, pop and retro, traditional kompang music and a Chinese orchestra. In line with the festival concept, the programme that spans three weeks from tomorrow to July 24 will reflect four key elements, namely local, international, educational and interactive. The fest will encompass all recognised disciplines of performing arts that showcase Johor talents and expose audiences to performers and talents of international repute. The public is invited to explore the Iskandar Puteri Heritage Trail on July 9 during the Heritage Race, which is a treasure hunt organised by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda). On July 16, skateboard enthusiasts can compete in a challenging Skateboard Race around a city circuit. To create more excitement in the heart of Johor Baru, the organisers are working in partnership with the Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk Committee to host a series of supporting events at the nearby Tan Hiok Nee Cultural Street. A photography contest dubbed "Photo-kopi @ Jalan Tan Hiok Nee" from June 26 to July 5 is expected to capture iconic scenes of JB's old town, including its streets and the people's old way of life. One of the attractions to see on the Tan Hiok Nee Cultural Street from July 9 to 17 is the art of making traditional lion heads and costumes used for lion dancing, by Master Siow Ho Phiew. Lion dance enthusiasts can look forward to a thrilling High Pole Lion Dance performance on July 16. On July 23, the award-winning movie, Love is a Many Splendored Thing with William Holden and Jennifer Jones in lead roles, will be screened to a by-invitation audience. This screen classic is based on a novel written by Han Suyin and believed to be her autobiography. Han Suyin, known to locals as Dr Elizabeth Comber, was a Eurasian doctor who spent about 10 years in Johor Baru, working in a dispensary above the former Universal Pharmacy at No 24, Jalan Ibrahim, a building that has now been demolished. A public viewing of the same movie will be held on Aug 6. "A good quality of life includes arts and cultural activities," said JB Arts Fest patron and Johor Baru member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Shahrir Abdul Samad. He added that while Johor Baru is rapidly-developing under Iskandar Malaysia, Johor could be enriched by a civil society who appreciate the arts. From the keen response to the arts fest currently gauged from internet search engines, he commended the organisers for putting Johor Baru firmly on the tourism map once again. He said this year's arts fest is seeing a better variety of foreign acts compared to last year. There are two sponsored shows, Your Sweet Smile...Help, featuring re-mix from Singapore and Empathy -- in Remembrance of the Victims of the Japanese Tsunami, a collaboration among Sekolah Seni Johor Baru, Japan Club of Johor and the arts fest organisers. Zain NINETY-FIVE per cent of individual septic tanks in the country have never been emptied as required once every three years. Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Noriah Kasnon said only five per cent (or 69,000) of the one million individual septic tanks in the country have been emptied, or otherwise known as undergo desludging according to schedule. She said, as a result, water from septic tanks contaminated streams and drains, or entered houses causing intolerable stench. Noriah said when this happened, the source of drinking water in the rivers would be polluted and this would affect the health of the people. "It is the responsibility of each household to ensure cleanliness of the water in our rivers," she said during the recent opening of the national-level Emptying of Septic Tanks Campaign at Kampung Kenangan Tun Dr Ismail 2 in Jalan Sungai Abong, Muar. Noriah said the ministry and state governments were working together to create awareness on importance of emptying septic tanks to protect the the environmental cleanliness and health of the community. She said if the trendcontinued, the Government would consider drafting new laws by placing the emptying of septic tanks to the responsibility of house and premise owners. Noriah said a recent study revealed that the cleanliness of water in the rivers had deteriorated, with only 306 rivers categorised as clean in 2009 as compared to 368 clean rivers in 2007. She said the number of rivers catgeorised as polluted rose from 48 rivers in 2008 to 54 in 2009. Earlier, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Kadir Mohd Din said it costs only 20 sen a day (or RM6 a month) for two years to pay RM144 for the service of emptying individual septic tanks, to keep the people healthy and country clean. Petronas paid govt RM594.6b Posted: 29 Jun 2011 10:27 AM PDT Petronas paid govt RM594.6b KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas has paid RM594.6 billion to the federal and state governments in the form of dividend, tax, export duty and petroleum receipts since its inception, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday. Of the total, RM65.7 billion was payment for the financial year ended March 31 this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Till June this year, Petronas' total contribution to the National Trust Fund was RM3 billion and the money had been invested in several financial instruments. "The National Trust Fund is active and its current size is RM5.43 billion," said Najib, who is also finance minister, in his written reply to Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai) during question time. Nurul Izzah had wanted to know Petronas' total contribution to the National Trust Fund and whether the government was prepared to allocate 30 per cent of the national oil corporation's annual profit in a national education fund for scholarships. Najib said the National Trust Fund was established to ensure optimum utilisation of the country's depleting natural resources for a continuous and stable source of revenue for the benefit of future generations. He said Bank Negara Malaysia had been tasked with the responsibility to manage the fund to en-sure the money was invested prudently in profitable financial instruments. The fund is administered by a panel of financial professionals, he said. Najib said the government had no plan to set up a new education fund as the award of scholarships and study loans was subject to certain terms and conditions. 300 US scholars to teach English Posted: 29 Jun 2011 10:27 AM PDT SOME 300 Fulbright scholars from the United States will be in Malaysia from next year to help improve English proficiency among schoolchildren in urban and rural areas, including Sabah and Sarawak. Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the education initiative, under the Fulbright English Teaching Assistance programme for fun learning, had been agreed upon by the Federal Government and the United States. "We hope to bring the level of proficiency in the language among our students to new heights through this programme," said Muhyiddin, who is also deputy prime minister. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in his meeting with United States President Barack Obama last year, was told that the US administration wanted to assist Malaysia in enhancing proficiency in the language through a Peace Corps-style project. "Following this, I held many discussions, both at the ministry level and with US embassy officials and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Kuala Lumpur and the US. We agreed that the programme be continued, not under the Peace Corps-style concept but through the Fulbright programme," he told Malay-sian journalists after meeting the Asean-US Business Council delegation here yesterday. Muhyiddin, who is in the US capital for a four-day working visit, is accompanied by his wife, Puan Seri Norainee Abdul Rahman, Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof and other senior government officials. The Fulbright programme is the flagship international educational exchange programme sponsored by the US government. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the US and those from other countries. The volunteer teachers programme came about at the second Asean-US meeting last year that was attended by eight Asean heads of government, including Najib. Obama also attended. Under the programme, Muhyiddin said the American scholars would assist in the teaching of the language on a volunteer basis. "They will go to the ground (schools). But they will not teach the English subject as we already have our own teachers to do this. "Instead, they will teach English-related programmes or activities during certain school hours which will be determined later. Therefore, the students' timetable will not be affected." Muhyiddin said this was unlike the master teachers' programme between Malaysia and the United Kingdom where master teachers guide Malaysian teachers who teach English-related subjects. "These master teachers will work closely with the school authorities on how best to improve the language, like the method of teaching. They go to a school, say, for a week or so, and assist teachers in areas where improvement needs to be done." Under the Fulbright programme, Muhyiddin said both Kuala Lumpur and the US would design fun programmes to encourage students to speak in English. He said Malaysia would pay for part of the costs, like accommodation and transport for the volunteers, and has set aside a RM1.4 million allocation for this. Under the first phase, Muhyiddin said 50 scholars would start by early next year. Muhyiddin said the Terengganu state government had embarked on a similar programme on its own initiative and it had proved successful. BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes. In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes. BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly. The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election. In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes. Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader. Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990. "The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight. Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area. The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight. Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results. Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election. The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages. Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008. In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said. "My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin. Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:55 PM PST 2010/12/23 By Hanif Miswan SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of them. He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October. The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers. CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom. The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy. Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent. His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world. He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10). "It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21. Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers". The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant. "CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice." "For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added. The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English. Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar. The national team have never qualified for the second round since making their first appearance in the qualifiers in 1973. They, however, need to get past Taiwan in the return leg on Sunday to qualify for the second stage, where Singapore await them. But national coach K. Rajagobal was unhappy with his players' performance, as they played well only in patches. "We failed to maintain our tempo after taking a 2-0 lead. Our defence allowed Taiwan to hit back with a soft goal. It is going to be tough in the return leg as Taiwan will definitely be more offensive," he said. Rajagobal also confirmed that Safee Sali will not play in the return leg. "He (Safee) suffered a hard knock in the first half. I don't think he can recover in time. We face a difficult situation as I will need to reshuffle my strikeforce with Norshahrul (Idlan Talaha) still recovering from injury." Taiwan coach Lo Chih Tsung warned that his team will be very offensive in the return leg. "We came here to get an away goal. We have accomplished our mission. SAFETY LESSON Posted: 28 Jun 2011 11:37 AM PDT SAFETY LESSON 2011/06/28 By Shenton Thomas De Silva SMK Sri Tebrau students learn life-saving tips during a fire drill ABOUT 800 students participated in a fire drill organised by the Parent-Teacher Association of SMK Sri Tebrau, Johor Baru, and the school's Fire Unit recently. The fire drill was held at the school with assistance from the Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department. The Fire Unit coordinator Michael Tay said the exercise was meant to train the students to react safely during a fire or emergency. "I hope the students will observe the proper procedures taught by the department," he said. School deputy headmistress Gan Siew Leng said the annual exercise saw firemen and rescue officers showing the students the safety steps to follow in the event of a fire. Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department operations officer C. Kesavan said the drill featured firemen rescuing six victims from a blazing school building. The drill started after the school authorities sounded the bell to signal an emergency evacuation. This was followed by students from various parts of the school buildings evacuating in an orderly manner and queuing at the school field. A fire engine arrived shortly, with several firemen quickly preparing to reach the top floor of the double-storey building using a ladder. They rescued two students who were taken to the ground floor before they were brought to a safe location on stretchers. While the two students were being rescued, other firemen were seen dousing several blazes that broke out around the building. A fire "victim", Mark Chang, 14, said, this was his first experience in a fire drill. "I was scared and excited while being carried down the ladder. "Now, I know what to do in the event of a fire," he said. He gleefully said he wanted to play the role of a "victim" again if he had another chance as it was exhilarating. Another "victim", Lim Chen Peng, 15, who was trapped in a burning classroom, said she was very scared as she did not know what to do after seeing a cloud of red smoke shrouding the building. "After the fire drill, I am now more prepared," Kesavan also conducted a fire response exercise for teachers where they extinguished the fire from a metal drum. Rare haul of ‘ikan talang’ a boon for local fishermen Posted: 28 Jun 2011 10:08 AM PDT FORTY-TWO night-time fishermen beamed broadly when their 18 boats hauled up a record catch of ikan talang (queenfish) for two days after they laid their nets off the Strait of Malacca. They caught more than two tonnes of fish between June 23 and 24 and raked in about RM8,000 for selling the large haul at RM4 per kg. Muar-Batu Pahat Fishermen's Association president Ser Boon Huat said this was the best catch of this year, adding that the price was also reasonable. He said the fish had previously fetched 30 to 50 sen per kg 30 years ago. Ser said ikan talang r oe were in good demand by consumers while the innards were sold to oil palm planters to make into fertiliser. The fish has five finger prints on its body which fishermen believe to be those of famous 15th century explorer, Admiral Cheng Ho (better known to the Chinese as Sam Poh Kong). The salted tal ang fet ch good prices in Perak, Kedah and other northern States as the Chinese consider it a delicacy and that by eating the fish, it will also bring good luck. However, many Chinese in the south view it differently. They have accepted Cheng Ho as a deity and even prayed to his portraits in their houses. According to one legend, a fish jumped into the ship commanded by Admiral Cheng Ho while he was sailing to this land. Cheng Ho picked it up and threw it back into the sea. That was how his finger prints came to be on the fish, according to the folklore. For years, fishermen who caught the fish would throw them back into the sea. But as the catch of other fish at sea dropped drastically over the years, the fish were also taken back. Meanwhile, Chia Soon Kia, 59, an exporter who sells the salted ikan talang to northern states, said it was unusual that large shoals of the fish surfaced during the two days of June 23 and 24 last week. He attributed it as a seasonal change of weather at sea. Chia said fishermen usually caught only one or two fish in their nets. "Due to its shortage, I had to operate my factory in stops and starts." He said most of the fish caught weighed between three and five kilogrammes each.
