British Open glance

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 10:50 PM PDT

England: A glance at the third round of the British Open:

Leading: Darren Clarke, who shot a 69 and was at 5-under 205.

Just behind: Dustin Johnson, whose 68 put him a shot back. Two more shots behind were Rickie Fowler and Thomas Bjorn.

Try and try again: Clarke, playing in his 20th British Open, has never won the championship.

Rory's day: U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy shot a 74 and is nine shots back.

Weather: The weather was miserable most of Saturday, but the rain subsided for the leaders. The forecast for the final round is gusty winds but mostly dry.

Notable: The entire field of 71 players was separated by only seven shots to begin the day. At the end of the third around, only 20 players were within seven shots.

Quotable: "I'll probably stuff my face and go to bed at about 10 and try not to drink too much." — Darren Clarke, asked about his plans for the night. -- AP

LA avoids feared 'Carmageddon' traffic jam

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 10:33 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES: Southern Californians made the ultimate sacrifice to avoid the dreaded "Carmageddon" — leaving their cars in the garage.

Unusually light traffic flowed freely through the second-largest U.S. city Saturday despite fears of epic traffic jams spawned by the 53-hour shutdown of a 10-mile (16-kilometer) stretch of one of the car-dependent region's most critical freeways.

Authorities closed the segment of Interstate 405 on the western side of the metropolis to allow partial demolition of a bridge, warning motorists to stay off the roads or plan alternate routes.

Officials were optimistic that the public far and wide had gotten the message, though there was some concern that the lack of gridlock would make the public complacent and that drivers would get behind the wheel before the freeway's scheduled reopening early Monday.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa flew over the city in a helicopter and said it was clear there were far fewer cars on freeways and streets than normal, but he cautioned at a midafternoon news conference that there were hours to go.

Not everyone was cooperating, though.

California Highway Patrol Officer Charmaine Fajardo said a 74-year-old man was arrested for jogging on the closed freeway after police told him he couldn't do so, and one or more bicyclists also were intercepted on the route. Fajardo said officers now have orders to arrest anyone trying to enter the shuttered freeway.

Additionally, a suspected drunken driver was arrested after going around barricades to enter the freeway, Fajardo said.

Progress on demolition of the half-century-old Mulholland Bridge was on schedule, Villaraigosa said. Powerful machines with long booms hammered away at the south side of the span, which is being removed to allow the interstate to be widened. The plan is to leave the north-side lanes standing until the south side is rebuilt.

Authorities looking at the potential impacts of the US$1 billion interstate project spent months giving the public dire warnings. The event got its name when Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told an early June press conference that "this doesn't need to be a Carmageddon" if people avoided driving.

In what was projected as the day's last big test, Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, featuring David Beckam, played Spanish heavyweight Real Madrid at Memorial Coliseum south of downtown.

The event saw some typical traffic tie-ups common at the stadium, but no major problems.

The drumbeat of "Carmageddon" warnings triggered an instant industry of businesses trying to capitalize on the phenomenon. JetBlue offered special flights from Burbank in the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach, with seats for the short hop costing just US$4 or US$5.

A cycling group saw that as an opportunity for a race. The cyclists started their ride 90 minutes before the flight's departure time to simulate the time that passengers would have to arrive at Burbank. Another member of the group took the flight and all were to meet at a Long Beach park.

Cyclist Stephan Andranian said it took the bikers one hour and 34 minutes to complete the ride from Burbank to Long Beach, largely following the Los Angeles River. Flight passenger Joe Anthony's total travel time including cab ride from Long Beach Airport to the park was just over 2 1/2 hours.

"We want to show that using a bike in LA is not only possible but that it can be faster than other modes of transportation," Andranian said. -- AP

Najib on working visit to Rome

LONDON: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is making a two-day working visit to Rome from today.

His programme includes an audience with Pope Benedict XVI and a meeting with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State (equivalent to a Head of Government), at Castel Gandolfo, Rome.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said he would be accompanied by wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Other members of his entourage are Plantation, Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

They will be joined by National Fatwa Council chairman Prof Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin and Archbishop Tan Sri Murphy Nicholas Xavier Pakiam.

This will be the second meeting between a Malaysian prime minister and the Pope, after the one involving former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Pope John Paul in June 2002.

During the visit to Rome, Najib would take the opportunity to talk about Malaysia's initiative on the Global Movement of the Moderates.

Looking at possible avenues to enhance cooperation between Malaysia and the Holy See is also on the agenda, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Najib concluded his official visit to the United Kingdom on Friday. -- BERNAMA

SAFEE Sali chose the perfect moment to announce his return from injury with two goals as Malaysia gave Liverpool an all-mighty scare before going down 6-3 in a friendly at the National Stadium yesterday.

Two Liverpool goals in stoppage time were cruel on the national team, who were chasing an equaliser at that time but coach K. Rajagobal can take many positives ahead of Malaysia's World Cup qualifier against Singapore on Saturday.

The only blemish last night was the loose defending which resulted in Liverpool streaking ahead 4-1 before Safee came on to score a special brace, his first goals for Malaysia since the AFF Cup.

Despite conceding six goals yesterday and 14 in the last four games, Rajagobal professed himself pleased after the poor showing on Wednesday in a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal.

"We did what we had planned to do, we played with greater urgency, there were good combinations on the pitch and we started off well," said Rajagobal, who made four changes from the side which played Arsenal.

"The disappointing thing was the (penalty) decision which may have demoralised the players. But we were aggressive and I told the players to stay positive and we got the equaliser through Safiq (Rahim).

"The goal gave a spark to the players and it was a very satisfying performance. But in the second half, we let in the goals through sloppy defending and a lack of concentration.

"I immediately replaced the players (Muslim Ahmad and Fadhli Shas) because I want them to know I'm serious. When you make mistakes against world-class players like that, they will kill you. In fact, the goals we conceded were gift goals for Liverpool."

Liverpool assistant manager Steve Clarke praised Malaysia's fighting spirit and singled out skipper Safiq, who scored off a breathtaking free-kick and Safee, who displayed his killer predatory instinct in front of goal.

"It was a good test before we go home, we created a few more chances in the second-half than the first which was more difficult," said Clarke, who stood in for manager Kenny Dalglish who returned to England earlier.

"Malaysia worked hard, were competitive but fair with some strong and honest challenges. They should be delighted to score three goals.

"It was a very open and entertaining game in the second half and I think we've got ourselves an invite to come back.

"We were trying to put on show and Malaysia deserve to take credit as well as it takes two teams to play.

"They showed great energy and the number eight (Safiq) scored a fantastic free-kick while the number 10 (Safee) made good runs forward and got two goals. You can be very proud of your team."

The match threatened to go as it did against Arsenal when Charlie Adam scored a disputed penalty as referee Nagor Amir Noor Mohamed momentarily stole the limelight when Andy Carroll went down in the box chasing an Adam pass with Fadhli in close pursuit.

But Malaysia stunned Liverpool in the 43rd minute when Safiq sent a beautiful free-kick over the wall, past a diving Jones and into the top corner of the net to the delight of the over 80,000 fans.

David Ngog then scored in the 68th and 70th minutes -- stabbing in the first after a mix up between Fadhli and Muslim before another mistake by Muslim allowed the Frenchman to fire an unstoppable shot past Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

After Maxi Rodriguez slid in to make it 4-1 off Emiliano Insua's cross in the 75th minute, Safee struck twice barely 10 minutes after coming on.

The Pelita Jaya striker bundled the ball in from close range in the 79th minute when Martin Hansen parried Amirulhadi Zainal's cross into his path before coolly slotting in from an angle three minutes later.

Even as Malaysia pushed for an equaliser, Liverpool tore the home defence apart for Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt to score in stoppage time.

those who need no introduction, in the likes of Didier Drogba (right) and Salomon Kalou are some of the stars who will feature against Young Tigers on Thursday.

CHELSEA will fly in to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow with their full squad on board for their match against the Young Tigers at the National Stadium on Thursday.

Among the players who will take the field include Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, John Terry and World Cup winner Fernando Torres.

Other big names are Nicolas Anelka, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda, Petr Cech and Yossi Benayoun. The only two notable absentees from the team are versatile midfielder Michael Essien and Brazilians David Luiz and Ramires.

The match against the Young Tigers will also see manager Andres Villas-Boas take charge of the Blues for the first time ever since the Portuguese took over the reins from Carlo Ancelotti.

Villas-Boas said fans could expect an entertaining display from the English Premier League powerhouse, promising that every one of his stars would get the chance to strut their stuff on the field. He added that it was the least the club could do to repay the support from the local Chelsea supporters.

"It's important for the club to expand in the Asian market as people love us so much there as they love us back home. So, it is important for us to be in Malaysia and show ourselves a little bit to them as well," he said.

"Coming back to Asia is important for us. It shortens the distance with the Asian public who are following us from a big distance. It is important for them to feel we have respect for them and we are able to feel their heat.
"I am sure they will give us tremendous support for the games we will have over there," said Villas-Boas who won a treble of titles with former team FC Porto last season.

Chelsea squad -- Petr Cech, Henrique Hilario, Jamal Blackman, Nathaniel Chalobah,  Patrick Van Aanholt, Slobodan Rajkovic, John Obi Mikel, Daniel Sturridge, Ryan Bertrand, Joshua McEachran, Alex, Yuri Zhirkov, Ross Turnbull, Salomon Kalou, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Paulo Ferriera, Jose Bosingwa, Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka, Florent Malouda, Didier Drogba, Billy Clifford.
