PM: Bigger interests at stake

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 10:32 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: It is the duty of the government to protect the interests and property of the larger community, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in his blog, www.1Malaysia.com. yesterday

He said the illegal rally held in the federal capital recently had shown that the people rejected any action which could jeopardise national security.

"Recent events that unfolded in Kuala Lumpur put us through an important test. Our decision as government was to protect the interests and property of the larger community that depend on Kuala Lumpur for their livelihood," he said.

By permitting one group to demonstrate, Najib said, it would give others the chance to use the same mechanism for whatever cause celebre or controversial issue that attracted a lot of public attention.

"Regardless of promises of a peaceful demonstration, it takes only a small overzealous group harbouring a crazy notion to attack innocent bystanders or vandalise property for things to turn for the worse.

"What then? Is it worthwhile for us to take the risk? Hence, as prime minister, it becomes my duty to protect the immediate interests of the larger community over the interests of a group of dissenters."

Najib said Malaysia was recently ranked the 19th most peaceful country in the world, and first in Southeast Asia.

"For decades, we have built our multi-cultural, multi-ethnic nation upon a foundation of mutual tolerance and respect for each other."

He said his personal experience during the May 13, 1969 incident had shaped his understanding of leadership when he saw his late father, Tun Abdul Razak, then prime minister, managing the crisis.

"As director of Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran), he had the power of the cabinet and Parliament in his hands. My father was afraid of absolute power and could not wait for the day he could surrender them back to the people, through Parliament and restore parliamentary democracy," he added.

As Malaysia was undergoing massive transformations, Najib urged the rakyat not to succumb to calls for action that would serve only to fracture the nation.

"Let us not give in to the desires of those seeking retribution that will only cause the decades of goodwill, the hard work and toil of so many to dissipate. Let us, together, make Malaysia a harmonious nation." -- Bernama

'Nock-ten' brings heavy rains to Philippines

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:45 PM PDT

MANILA: Tropical Depression "Nock-ten" (" Juaning") has intensified into a tropical storm Tuesday morning, bringing heavy rains and floods in several northern Philippine provinces, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said "Nock-ten," which packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center, was seen 100 kilometers northeast of Daet, Camarines Norte. PAGASA forecasts the tropical storm to move west northwestward at 19 kph.

The country's weather forecasters raised storm signal No. 2 over Catanduanes, Albay and Camarines provinces.

"Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under signals number one and two are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone," Pagasa said.

Education officials suspended classes in pre-school, elementary and high school levels, both in public and private, in several northern Philippine provinces including the capital region of Metro Manila.

Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Zest Air cancelled at least 20 domestic flights due to the weather disturbance. -- BERNAMA

Both sides display professionalism

GUA MUSANG: Leaders from both the Barisan Nasional and Pas demonstrated a high level of professionalism during nominations for the Galas state seat today, ensuring a smooth, fast and clean nomination process.

The BN delegation was led by Umno vice-president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Wanita Umno chief, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Wanita MCA chief, Datuk Ng Yen Yen and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, while the Pas delegation was helmed by its party president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president Azmin Ali and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.

Both delegations arrived separately and though seated in different tents were seen chatting with each other in a very cordial and peaceful manner.

At one point, Shahrizat was seen leading a delegation of Wanita Umno members to visit the Opposition tent.

There, Shahrizat warmly greeted Hadi Awang, who stood up to greet her, along with Kit Siang and Azmin.

Hadi Awang asked Shahrizat how the recently concluded Umno general assembly had progressed and congratulated her on a smooth and successful assembly.

"It went well. There were no problems and everyone was happy," said Shahrizat, who also took time to ask Kit Siang about his health.

"I'm well ... how about you," asked the DAP stalwart.

The group then spent a few minutes chatting and later returned to their respective camps.

Overall, there was not a single untoward incident and supporters from both sides demonstrated a high level of professionalism.

"We are very happy with how the nominations progressed and hope this same kind of spirit will prevail throughout the campaign period and on polling day also," said Kelantan police chief, Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.

Abdul Rahim has assured both the Barisan Nasional, who will be fielding Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, for the seat and Pas' Dr Zulkefli Mohamed,44, that the police will not reject any permits for ceramahs, as long as it is submitted a day earlier.

There were more than 500 supporters on each side and police, who had anticipated large crowds had took steps to place the groups 180 metres apart as opposed to only 60 metres as in previous by-elections.

There was also very smooth traffic flow, with no major disturbances to the locals who were busy on their way to work.

"We did not close any major roads and did our best not to disturb the daily lives of the people here," said Abdul Rahim.

New faces expected in Sarawak election

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 03:12 PM PDT

2010/11/23
By Lian Cheng
news@nst.com.my

KUCHING: The coming state election may see the most number of new faces within the Sarawak Barisan Nasional in its history.

In the past, it has been the practice of BN to maintain the incumbents to ensure political stability - the fewer changes made, the less risk would be at stake.

However, since the last state election in 2006, the general public's mentality seems to have shifted to opt for new blood and younger state representatives, especially after the op position made it a point to recruit young professionals with no historical baggage or even political background to stand as their candidates.

While BN had little time to react to this change in the last state election, this time around, however, one can expect to see BN putting forth new faces to replace some of the incumbents, especially those who did not secure impressive majorities in the last state elections.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), for instance, did not wait for the coming election to make known its intention to replace some of the incumbents.

As early as November 2008, its president Tan Sri Taib Mahmud replaced three PBB assistant ministers when reshuffling his Cabinet - Datuk Bolhassan Di (Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communica tion), Datuk Hamden Ahmad (Assistant Minister of Youth as well as Tourism) and Datuk Ambrose Blikau (Assistant Minister of Rural Development as well as Public Utilities).

With growing rumours that a state election would take place March 26 (which coincides with Taib's 30th an niversary as Chief Minister) next year, there are predictions that more than a handful of PBB incumbents would be dropped after Taib's declaration of 30 per cent new faces.

PBB was allocated 35 out of the 71 state seats in the last elections and 30 per cent new faces would mean 10 new candidates, which was also confirmed by party insiders.

Those on top of the list speculated to be dropped are the three dropped assistant minsiters Bolhassan (Beting Maro), Hamden (Belawai) and Blikau (Katibas).

Others included Dr Wahbi Junaidi (Saribas; 94-vote ma jority), Simoi Peri (Lingga; 1870-vote majority), Gramong Juna (Machan; 2,289-vote majority), Frederick Bayoi (Kedup; 1981-vote majority) and Wan Wahap (Sadong Jaya, 858-vote majority).

Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), meanwhile, has been going on its rounds to solve issues, reaching out to young voters and recruiting thousands of them. SUPP has also produced dramas to rekindle among the veteran party members their initial love and sacrifice for the party.

These efforts were taken note of by the Chinese, but initial grassroots feedback seems to indicate no significant impact as yet on Chinese voters.

"Every day, we make it a point to spend time with our voters. We are experiencing a total transformation especially with regards to our candidates," said its president Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam.

SUPP plans to put forth at least 30 per cent new faces and no "recycled candidates". These changes are expected in all the areas it had lost ground previously, such as Padungan, Pending, Batu Lintang, Kidurong, Merandong and Bukit Assek. SUPP has 19 allocated constituencies.

Only one recycled candidate would be expected, namely Datuk Alfred Yap, contesting in Kota Sentosa which he lost by 531 votes to Sarawak DAP secretary general Chong Chieng Jen.

For Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) which has been allocated nine seats, its president Datuk Seri Dr James Masing has stated that there would be at least two new faces, speculated to be at Ngemah and Pelagus.

Ngemah was lost to Gabriel Adit, a former BN member who is now Parti Cinta Malaysia Sarawak state chief.

Pelagus, a seat of dispute due to Larry Sng's expulsion from the party after challenging Masing's presidency, remains a problem that BN needs to solve before the state elections is called.

To Masing, the Pelagus seat is non-negotiable.

Sng, who has been a partyless assistant minister over the last three years, would have to be absorbed by other component parties and contest in another constituency besides Pelagus if he wished to stand under the BN banner.

Speculation is that he would either stand in Meradong, the birthplace of his tycoon father-in-law Tan Sri Ting Phek Kiing, if he is to be absorbed by SUPP; or Meluan, replacing Wong Judat, should he be accepted by Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

Holding eight seats, SPDP's president Datuk Seri William has said that he would retain all the incumbents.

However, it has been reported that the four state as semblymen within "the disgruntled five" namely Datuk Peter Nansian (Tasik Biru), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu), Sylvester Entri (Marudi) and Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau) would be replaced with new faces.

"The disgruntled five", which also includes Mas Gading Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, was given the nickname when they teamed up to call on party president Mawan to resign.

They claimed that Mawan, who is also the State Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, was influenced by an invisible hand when he did not re-appoint Entri as the party secretary-general.

The five walked out from a SPDP supreme council meeting when Mawan replaced Entri.

Football: Ismail set to fill Safiq void

ISMAIL FARUQI ASHARI

ISMAIL FARUQI ASHARI

TERENGGANU'S Ismail Faruqi Ashari could be the player to replace suspended captain Safiq Rahim when Malaysia play Singapore in Thursday's World Cup qualifier second round, return leg tie at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Ismail, 25, was initially not part of national coach K. Rajagobal's plans but received a late call-up to boost Malaysia's midfield in the recent friendly against Liverpool.

His impressive performance in that match earned Ismail his first international cap at last weekend's 5-3 defeat to Singapore in the away first leg.

The pint-sized midfielder was a surprise starter ahead of regular Amirulhadi Zainal on the right flank and despite his inexperience, managed to give Singapore defenders, led by centre-back Daniel Bennett, a tough time with his speed and skill.

The Manir-born player, however, missed a gilt-edged chance to score in the 29th minute before being replaced by Amirul at half time.

Ismail, who stands at 1.68 metres, may be the shortest player in the squad but he is not afraid to take on physically bigger opponents.

"I like the way Ismail plays. He is brave and strong despite being the smallest player in the team," said Rajagobal yesterday.

"I decided on starting him in the first leg after watching his style of play against Liverpool. What I like about him is that he is enterprising on the ball."

Rajagobal named Ismail, K. Gurusamy and Shakir Shaari as the three possible options to fill the void left by Safiq, who was sent off on Saturday.

"I need to look at my options before deciding on the player to replace Safiq. However, Ismail has definitely earned merit points from his performance in the first leg for consideration. He is a strong candidate," said Rajagobal.

Ismail expressed his delight when told he was one of the players being considered to fill Safiq's shoes in central midfield.

"I never once thought I would be good enough to represent the country. I will give my best if selected again. It was a memorable experience to finally earn my first cap against Singapore but I am unhappy as we lost," said Ismail.

Ismail has represented Terengganu in the M-League since 2006 and this season, scored three goals from 22 matches to help the East Coast side finish second to Kelantan in the Super League.

CENTREBACK Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak has made a timely return from injury ahead of Thursday's World Cup Qualifier return leg against Singapore.

Aidil Zafuan, who aggravated his ankle injury before last weekend's 5-3 first leg defeat to Singapore, went through training with ease at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

"I am happy to be back in training. My ankle did not give me any problems. I guess I am ready to play on Thursday," said Aidil.

"I picked up the injury in the match against Arsenal but recovered in time for the first leg in Singapore. However, I was advised to rest after aggravating it during training last Friday."

Aidil Zafuan's return is timely as coach K. Rajagobal needs an experienced player in defence, especially in the centre.

If all goes well, the Negri Sembilan player, who is also a free kick specialist, will replace centreback Muslim Ahmad on Thursday.

Aidil Zafuan is also a candidate, besides Safee Sali, to stand in as captain in the absence of suspended Safiq Rahim. If he plays, the former national captain will likely be given the task of shackling Singapore striker Aleksandar Duric.

"I've played against Duric many times before. He uses his strength and height to create opportunities for himself in the penalty box. We need to be careful when he gets the ball," said Aidil Zafuan, who also pledged not to allow Singapore to score goals in the return leg.

ROLLING THE 3Rs

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 10:23 AM PDT

2011/07/24
By Shenton Thomas De Silva

Skudai students learn to reuse, reduce and recycle, with accent on creativity

The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMP) and Scientex Foundation recently organised the 3Rs Awareness Programme 2011 contest at SJK(C) Kuo Kuang 2, in Johor Baru.

The contest offers awards for best essay, poster drawing, innovation from recycled materials and public speaking.

The contest was launched on April 11 by the National Solid Waste Management Department director-general Datuk Nadzri Yahaya.

Six schools -- four primary and two secondary -- from Skudai took part in the contest.

It was the second such programme organised by the association. The first was held last year and involved five schools in Kuala Lumpur.

MPMA chairman Lim Chun Yow said the aim of the contest was to inculcate awareness of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) among the youth.

"We want to promote proper waste management information among the young. We will also continue to be an active advocate in waste management issues in the country," he said at his office in Taman Anggerik, Skudai, Johor.

The association has also organised 3Rs awareness campaigns for schools and the public.

"Among the campaigns was the '3Rs Plastic Bag' which was endorsed by Housing and Local Department Ministry," he said.

MPMA executive director S.T. Giam said students from the participating schools were taught about the 3Rs through the use of books, videos and posters.

"We also put recycling bins at the school and then got the rag-and-bones man to weigh the collected items," said Giam.

She expressed hope that the students would also get their parents to adopt environmentally friendly habits, adding that the association also organises 3Rs programmes for universities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Giam thanked Scientex Foundation for sponsoring the event and the panel of judges from Universiti Teknologi Malaysian and Petrochemicals Sdn Bhd for their support.

Winner of the public speaking award R. Nanthini, 17, of SMK Skudai said, recycling was an important matter that should not be overlooked.

"My family and I recycle at home. I see the students in my school recycle," she said.

She won RM300.

Chief judge for the essay competition Vincent D'Silva said: "I was inundated with entries in a myriad of writing styles and context. This made it enjoyable for the judges to vet the entries and select the best.

"I must say it was not an easy task," he said.

The prize went to Tan Jo Wen, 16 of SMK Taman Mutiara Rini. She collected RM150.

At the award-presentation ceremony, MPMA president Lim Kok Boon said the programme in Johor collected triple the amount of recyclable items compared with last year.

"I believe the programme has gained momentum because more schoolchildren are showing interest in it.

"For the record, we collected 26.4 tonnes of paper, 0.6 tonnes of plastics and 0.04 tonnes of aluminium cans with a total collection value of RM12,350," he said.

He added that the programme also provided the opportunity for the students to find creative ways to implement the 3Rs.

Scientex Bhd Group of Companies managing director Lim Peng Jin in his speech, advised against the the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

"We should reduce the carbon footprint by the use of renewable energy," said the Trustee member of Scientex Foundation.

Preying on the gullible during Hungry Ghost month

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 07:41 AM PDT

I RECEIVED a call from someone who claims to be priest asking me whether I was interested in hiring his services to conduct prayers for departed relatives in conjunction with the lunar seventh month.

The seventh month, which will begin on July 31, is also known as the Hungry Ghost Month when the Chinese community believe spirits are allowed to wander the world after the gates of Hades are thrown open, and they are free to feast on the offerings prepared by the living.

It is common to see Chinese entrepreneurs, especially, those who run pubs and discotheques, burn hell currency notes that are piled mountain high, scrambling to appease the wandering spirits so that these spirits will not cause mischief that will affect their business.

Another common sight during the Hungry Ghost Month is food laid out on tables as offerings for the dead.

It is believed that one must not put one's baby on these tables, or the "not-so-discerning" ghosts may think the baby was meant as an offering to them.

Anyway, back to the monk who called me. He said if I were interested in the ritual, I should deposit RM500 into his bank account for him to conduct the five-day prayers which will alleviate the suffering of departed relatives.

There has been an increase in the number of monks who exploit the gullibility of others because opportunities abound in our modern society.

Some people are too busy to head for the graveyard or columbarium to pay their respects to the departed, and they think that hiring a monk to chant for the dead done in the name of filial piety will bring peace and happiness to themselves and the dead relatives, who will in turn, make their lives more bearable and devoid of obstacles.

There are always those who are more than willing to part with their hard-earned money, believing that such rituals will indeed bring liberation to the departed, and may even thank the monk for having made the call.

Was it solely the money, being essential for survival, that prompted the call from the monk or was it a gesture of goodwill?

If the monk hadn't named a price for the ritual but instead asked for a donation of any sum, then perhaps there would have been no doubts. And then there are people who do things prompted by a sales commission more than the need to serve.

A recent shopping experience left me rather disappointed with the attitude of the salesgirl.

If Johor wants to be touted as a shopping paradise, then sales personnel should adopt some business etiquette. Being in the sales line is a tough job as they encounter customers with different personalities throughout the day, but every job has its challenges.

I had bought a pair of shoes at a shopping mall. It was the size that I usually wear but for this pair of shoes, the cutting turned out to be a tad smaller than usual. So I brought it back to change for a bigger size.

The minute the salesgirl saw me, she took a defensive stance and said: "You cannot get a refund, you can only exchange the goods."

The thought of asking for a refund never crossed my mind. All I wanted was a size that would fit.

I don't think it was all the the salesgirl's fault. I think the management should have trained their sales people better.

Now that the 1Malaysia Mega Sale is on, operators should strive to beat their competitors by offering unbeatable service which includes courteous smiles and product knowledge to complement the goods.
