Najib said three private schools – Sekolah Menengah Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa and Sekolah Menengah Sin Min here, will received RM200,000 each.

Four Chinese vernacular schools – Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chio Min in Kulim, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 and Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa II (CORRECT) here; will each received RM100,000.

Also receiving the same amount was Keat Hwa Former Students Association.

The allocation were given to the recipients to help them to conduct upgrading works and organise more activities for their schools.

The prime minister made the announcement when he met the Chinese community at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa I in Jalan Kuala Kedah here.

Earlier, Najib visited Al-Rahmah mosque in Taman Wira, Mergong here.

At the mosque, Najib was briefed on the extension work of the building, costing about RM1.12 million, funded by the Government.

He later spent 30 minutes with the people during his walkabout at housing estate Pasar Tani.

Time to move from tolerance to acceptance, PM tells Malaysians

ALOR SETAR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak urged the people today to "move from tolerance to acceptance" to bring closer together Malaysia's multi-racial society.

The Prime Minister said: "In the practice of tolerance, there are still dividing walls and feelings of our difference from one another."

In comparison, acceptance celebrates diversity and uses the strength of all, regardless of race, he said at a meet-the-people session at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 in Jalan Kuala Kedah near here which was celebrating its 100th anniversary.

"This is a strength for our nation. As in a football match, people from our various communities help one another for the success of our team," Najib added.

"If one of us score an own goal, we will lose. This (solidarity) value is important to us all, no matter the colour of our skin or how we look," said the Prime Minister, who arrived here this morning for a one-day working visit to Kedah. -- BERNAMA

Petronas Carigali discovers gas offshore Sabah

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:38 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, the exploration and production arm of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), has made two significant gas discoveries in the shallow water areas offshore west coast of Sabah.

In a statement today, Petronas said the first discovery was via the Zuhai East-1 well, which was located in the Samarang Asam Paya Block about 130km south-west of Kota Kinabalu.

"The current estimate of gas-initially-in-place is about 550 billion standard cu ft," it said.

Similar reservoirs in a nearby well about 5 km to the east of the Zuhai East discovery were tested to flow gas at a maximum rate of 21 million standard cu ft per day, it said.

Petronas Carigali is the sole equity holder of the production-sharing contract (PSC) of the Samarang Asam Paya Block.

It said the second discovery, at the Menggatal-1 well, was located in Block SB312, about 110km north-east of Kota Kinabalu.

"The Block SB312 PSC is a joint-venture between Petronas Carigali with 60 per cent equity and KUFPEC Malaysia (SB 312) Ltd, a subsidiary of Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co, which holds the remaining interest," it said. -- BERNAMA

Land mines buried in landslide-hit Seoul

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:36 PM PDT

SEOUL: About 10 land mines remain buried in a Seoul mountain pounded by recent rainstorms and the military is bracing for possible contingencies, the defense ministry said Thursday.

At a press briefing, ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said the military has removed most of the mines buried near an air defense artillery unit on Mount Umyeon, but "about 10 mines" have not been recovered.

Dozens of homes in southern Seoul were buried under mud swept from Mount Umyeon on Wednesday, killing at least 15, following the heaviest downpours to hammer the South Korean capital in a century.

But Kim said the military had already cleared the area affected by the landslide.

"Chances are low that mines will be spotted," he said. "But we're preparing for any situation that may arise from the area. We have not yet received any report that mines have been spotted."

The mines were placed after the 1950-53 Korean War, and a military official explained that most were removed between 1999 and 2006.

"We have placed warning signs across the mountain to warn residents and hikers," the official said. -- BERNAMA

Palm oil may fall to RM2,800 in Sept: Mistry

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Palm oil may slump to as low as RM2,800 (US$952) per metric ton in September as output jumps in Malaysia and Indonesia, the world's two largest growers, according to Dorab Mistry, director of Godrej International Ltd.

Malaysia may produce 19 million tons in 2011, 2 million more than last year, Mistry told a symposium in Sydney today, according to an advance copy of his remarks. Indonesian output may gain 3 million tons to 25.5 million tons, said Mistry. Palm oil traded at RM3,134 at 5:23 p.m. in Singapore yesterday.

Lower palm oil prices may help to ease global food costs that rallied to a record in February, according to a United Nations gauge, and held within 2 percent of that peak in June. Mistry, who's traded the oil used in food and fuels for more than three decades, forecast a rebound to RM4,000 in 2012.

By September, "the peak summer demand will have gone, Indonesian biodiesel production will slow down dramatically and CPO production will rise strongly," Mistry said according to the remarks, referring to crude palm oil by its initials. Malaysian stockpiles will reach a record in December, he said.

Palm oil on the Malaysia Derivatives Exchange has slumped 21 per cent since climbing to a 35-month high of RM3,967 on Feb. 10 on expectations output will expand this year. Crude oil's 28 per cent rally over the past year has also lifted the appeal of vegetable oils in biofuels. Mistry said that his forecasts were based on crude oil at US$85 to US$105 per barrel.

Sime's Forecast

Lower palm oil prices may hurt growers such as Malaysia's Sime Darby Bhd, the world's biggest listed producer. Palm oil may remain at about RM3,000 for the rest of the year on good demand, Franki Anthony, Sime Darby's plantation managing director, said on July 22.

Mistry's forecast today is similar to his last public call in April, which was issued in Beijing. He said then that prices may decline to less than RM3,000 as output in Southeast Asia expanded, before rallying in the final quarter.

"I expect palm stocks on 1st December in Malaysia to be at a record high," Mistry said in Sydney today, according to the remarks. Reserves in the second-largest producer reached an all- time high of 2.27 million tons in November 2008 and stood at 2.05 million tons last month, according to Bloomberg data.

Global palm oil output will expand at least 6 million tons from last year as Papua New Guinea, Thailand, India and Colombia also see growth, he said. "We have a strong recovery in tree output, plus a strong increase in mature area," Mistry said.

Record Production

Mistry's forecasts for production in Malaysia and Indonesia are higher than official projections. Malaysian output may be 17.6 million tons in 2011, compared with 17 million in 2010, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Bernard Dompok said in March. Dompok's outlook would match output in 2009 and compare with 2008's record 17.7 million tons, official data show.

Indonesia expects output to rise 5.3 per cent to 24.4 million tons in 2011, Gamal Nasir, director general for estate crops at the agriculture ministry, said in December. Production in Indonesia will rise 8.1 percent to 24 million tons in 2011, Hamburg-based researcher Oil World said in a July 19 report.

Global biodiesel demand is expected to grow 3 million tons this year, while demand for food will expand 3.5 million tons driven by rising populations and better living standards in developing countries, according to Mistry. Palm oil competes with soybean oil for use in foods and fuels.

Soybean oil will remain "steady" at US$1,250 a ton free-on- board for the next few months due to biodiesel mandates in Brazil and Argentina, Mistry said. Still, the erosion in export demand for soybean oil from so-called price-sensitive countries will continue given its large premium over palm oil, he said.

Large stockpiles of soybeans in 2011 from better-than- expected crops in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay may lead to an increase of almost 12 million tons in the crushing of the oilseed compared with last year, Mistry said. That would help to produce 2 million tons more soybean oil in 2011, he said.

"Soya-oil prices will only rally around December-January as we approach the end of the South American crush season," Mistry said. "The soya oil premium over palm oil will narrow as a first step before we see any gains in soya oil." -- Bloomberg

Football: Time to deliver, Malaysia

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:27 PM PDT

2011/07/28
Reports: Ajitpal Singh & Devinder Singh
nstsport@nstp.com.my

THE battle lines have been drawn.

Riding on a nationalistic fervour, Malaysia will be looking to give Singapore a torrid time in front of a sell-out crowd of 85,000 fans at the National Stadium today in a bid to overcome a 5-3 deficit in a World Cup Asian zone second round qualifying tie.

Little incentive is needed to get players and fans from both sides of the Causeway motivated as only a Malaysia versus Singapore clash can.

The equation is simple. Malaysia need to win by a two-goal margin to advance to the third round draw to be held in 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil on Saturday, as long a 5-3 scoreline is not repeated.

For Singapore, even a one-goal defeat is enough to send them through and the visitors understandably could be expected to tread a more cautious line in protecting the lead they earned at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday.

That could prove problematic for Malaysia, who have never enjoyed playing against a defensive-minded team, as the first round, first leg clash against Taiwan last month showed.

AFF Cup champions Malaysia's forte has always been in the strength of their counter-attacks through the flanks but Singapore, if the hints of coach Radojko Avramovic are any indication, have a surprise lined up for the home side.

"Should I be telling you whether we are going to sit back or go on the attack?" said Avramovic yesterday at a press conference in Petaling Jaya in response to a question of how he will set his team up for the second leg.

"We have our target, we are focused on qualifying for the next round. People come to see goals and we would like to see more goals but as long as we score more than them. Both teams are capable of winning, Malaysia and us looking at it the same way. The players are ready."

After a calamitous display by the Malaysian defenders, who have conceded 19 goals in their last five matches, coach K. Rajagobal is expected to ring the changes for the national team's most important game of the year.

In comes Aidil Zafuan Radzak, who in the absence of the suspended Safiq Rahim, will take on the captain's arm-band and the role of a free-kick specialist.

Muslim Ahmad, a pillar of strength in the AFF Cup but who has been in steady decline since, will have to make way after being embarrassed by Singapore's 41-year-old Bosnian-born striker Alexander Duric, who is only one year short of the combined ages of the Malaysian centre-backs Muslim and Fadhli Shas he faced in the first leg.

Safiq's place in the middle could go to Ismail Faruqi Ashari with Amirulhadi Zainal restored on the right flank while it's a toss-up between Abdul Hadi Yahya and Ahmad Fakri Saarani to partner Safee Sali in attack.

"I don't think there is any pressure on us," said Rajagobal. "The players are used to it, they know their responsibility and they have no choice but to focus on winning the game.

"There will be more urgency and intensity and they are all excited as can be seen in training. Their morale is not down and they are ready."

Excluding the two mismatched friendly matches against English clubs Arsenal and Liverpool, Malaysia are unbeaten in six internationals on home ground since a 3-1 defeat to Uzbekistan in an Asian Cup qualifier last November, which remains Rajagobal's only defeat in 11 home internationals.

Singapore, who have right-back Ismail Yunos suspended, will also be confident of extending their unbeaten run against Malaysia to nine matches, stretching back to 2004 even if they are playing in Bukit Jalil for the first time ever.

Malaysia will have to keep Singapore's five foreign-born players -- Dukic, Shi Jia Yi, Qiu Li, Mustafic Fahrudin, and Daniel Bennett -- in check after four of them scored in the first leg but Rajagobal cautioned against under-estimating their local talent.

"They (Singapore's locals) are just as important as the other players. They have a good balance in the team so we must not forget about the locals," said Rajagobal who is probably referring to Singapore's midfield inspiration Shahril Ishak.

Football: Khairul ready to step in

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:24 PM PDT

Khairul Fahmi Che Mat wants to play today.

Khairul Fahmi Che Mat wants to play today.

GOALKEEPER Khairul Fahmi Che Mat looks set to reclaim his No 1 jersey from Sharbinee Allawee for today's crucial World Cup qualifying return leg against Singapore.

Khairul, with only one senior cap so far this year due to his commitment with the national Olympic squad, is likely to be picked ahead of Sharbinee who failed to impress in last weekend's away first leg.

"I hope to play tomorrow (today) but it all depends on the coach (K. Rajagobal).

"I lost my place due to my commitments with the Olympic squad where I also picked up a shoulder injury. However, I am now 100 percent recovered," said the 22-year-old yesterday.

"It does not matter who plays as long as Malaysia win.

"Right now, I do not know whether I will be named in the starting line-up," said the Kelantan-born keeper.

Khairul's claim to fame was in last December's AFF Cup where he was instrumental in helping Malaysia win the title.

"He also played a key role in Kelantan winning their first Super League title.

Khairul was given a chance to impress Rajagobal in the recent friendly matches against English Premier League (EPL) sides Arsenal and Liverpool when he came on as a substitute in the second half of both matches.

However, Khairul blew the chance -- letting in seven of the 10 goals scored by both EPL sides which prompted Rajagobal to pick Sharbinee for the first leg at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Khairul said his teammates are determined to overcome the 5-3 deficit from the first leg.

"We made many errors in the first leg. I think everyone in the team has realised their mistakes after watching the video recording.

"It is important that we get early goals to beat Singapore on aggregate as the whole nation wants it," he added.

RECORD RIDE

By Rizalman Hammim

1,700 bikers recently rode into the Malaysia Book of Records

THE loud rumbling of high-powered engines filled the air of Kampung Parit Jayos in Batu Pahat, recently when some 1,700 superbikers made their way to the village.

Organised by Media Prima Bhd, the event made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) as the longest motorcycle convoy in the country.

The convoy, which measured five kilometres long, was organised in collaboration with the Johor Motorcycle Assocation in conjunction with Media Prima's Merdeka celebrations.

The bikers started their journey at Dataran Yong Peng before making their way to the village which was 20km away.

The convoy was flagged off by Parit Sulong MP Datuk Noraini Ahmad and Yong Peng assemblyman Lim Kee Moi.

Media Prima chairman Datuk Johan Jaafar was part of the convoy.

Johan said the programme was a way for Media Prima to show its patriotism.

"As a concerned corporate body, it is our duty to organise programmes that would instil the spirit of patriotism into the public, no matter where they may be.

"The programme also gives an opportunity for people in the village to see these motorcycles," said Johan, adding that the participants also took the opportunity to distribute the Jalur Gemilang to the villagers.

The bikers were from 70 motorcycle clubs and associations from Malaysia and Singapore.

"The response was overwhelming. We are grateful for all the help we received, especially our host Kammuji Partikun, a biker from Kampung Parit Jayos."

Kammuji said he was pleasantly surprised by the bikers' response.

"I would like to thank the organisers and participants for coming to Kampung Parit Jayos and enjoying our humble offerings," said Kammuji.

Media Prima also organised a series of activities for the villagers. Among them were a lucky draw, drawing competition for children and a "rewang", which is a Javanese practice of cooking for a large crowd with the help of villagers.

"The 'rewang' was held to foster ties between the villagers and members of the convoy," said Johan.

One of the participants of the convoy is Ben Banging Bahron, 60, from Parit Yaani, Batu Pahat, who is also the secretary of Kelab Bermotorsikal Penggaram.

"We were invited to take part in the convoy by the Batu Pahat Youth and Sport Department.

"Forty-nine club members are part of the convoy," said Ben.

The record for the longest motorcycle convoy was verified by MBR representative Myra Dzaman, who presented a certificate to Media Prima group general manager for corporate communication Mastura Adnan.

Members of the convoy were treated to a heart-warming lunch and entertained by schoolchildren who performed a zapin dance as well as a band which played traditional songs.

Syarikat Faiza Sdn Bhd presented a cheque of RM30,000 for Tabung Bersamamu TV3.

Living in harmony with the Tao

By Sim Bak Heng

PHASE two of Senibong Cove, the RM2 billion waterfront development in Johor Baru, will be launched in September.

It features luxury resort-style villas and semi-detached houses on a 35ha island at the mouth of Sungai Lunchoo, which fronts the Johor Straits and faces Singapore.

The first phase, launched last year, consisted of 224 units of courtyard link houses, semi-detached houses and twin villas. It received an enthusiastic response from buyers. To date, 95 per cent of the units have been snapped up.

Senibong Cove is a joint venture between Front Concept Sdn Bhd and Iskandar Waterfront Development Sdn Bhd, with the latter being the landowner.

Walker Corporation, the developer, is a major Australian real estate developer with prominent waterfront projects such as the Hope Island Resort on the Gold Coast.

Senibong Cove marks the first Australian investment in the Malaysian real estate sector.

Front Concept assistant-general manager Ling Ngie Soon said the second phase only comprised 144 villas in a lushly landscaped environment surrounded by waterways and canals.

"Besides having superb waterfront views, other units will be facing canals. The island will have a generous green lung in the centre with a clubhouse and support facilities.

"There are lots of water features in our development. The river, waterfront and canals form an important aspect of the feng shui.

"Our development was purposely designed to incorporate feng shui features to give housebuyers more value for their investment," he said.

The price of each unit is from RM1.2 million.

The Senibong Cove development spreads over 83ha on the eastern side of Johor Baru. Over 2,500 units will be developed over 10 years.

Under the development masterplan, the enclave will have a marina, clubhouse, commercial cmplex and recreation club.

There will also be walkways and boardwalks along the waterfront, five public parks, extensive landscaping and a host of common amenities, facilities and services.
