KUALA LUMPUR: As the authorities coordinated their efforts to protect government websites from further attacks, it has been revealed that those to date had originated mostly from within the country.

"Only 10 per cent of the attacks on the 198 affected websites had been traced to foreign hackers. Most were simply defaced," said Information, Communications and CultureMinister Datuk Seri Dr RaisYatim yesterday.

CyberSecurityMalaysia, an agency in the Science,Technology and Innovation Ministry tasked with monitoring Internet security, said no sensitive information had been stolen, leaked or damaged by the hackers.

Rais said the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and CyberSecurityMalaysia had been working on identifying and apprehending the culprits.

He said as the bulk of the attacks came fromwithinMalaysia, it would not be necessary for the government to seek Interpol's assistance.

Nevertheless,Rais said the government viewed the hacking as a serious offence.

"The attacks have been a nuisance to the people. For example, they could not do online banking. The government will take stern action against those responsible."

CyberSecurity Malaysia also reported that attacks on government websites were ongoing but at a reduced rate, adding that most, including www.malaysia.gov.my, were already back online.

"A few are in the process of being recovered," said CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt-Col Datuk Husin Jazri.

"Our focus now is to halt the attacks and get the affected websites up and running."

He said the agency had received information on the hackers while police had identified some of the perpetrators.

Husin advised all companies and organisations, whether in the public or private sector, to be alert and do the necessary to secure their websites.

"The hackers may not stop at only government websites."

Those whose websites had been defaced or had observed attempts on their sites can contact the Cyber999 Help Centre by emailing cyber999@cybersecurity.my or mycert@mycert.org.my

It was understood that several websites were also temporarily taken down to prevent hacking.

The Human Resources Ministry, for example, decided to shut down its website following several attempts to hack it.

"We took down the website on Thursday night but it is back up now. No harm was done," a ministry source said.

In Kuantan, the state government said it had taken several measures to protect government websites, including improving the security system and backing up important files.

However, state Science, Innovation and Information Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said there were no hacking reports.

ZUBAIDAH ABU BAKAR:
Pas goes 'under the radar'

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:57 AM PDT

Even the presence of Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat at a ceramah in Pas stronghold Sungai Terah on Thursday failed to draw the crowd.

Many blamed the heavy rain which started to pour earlier but the rain had stopped before the Tok Guru took the microphone.

There was an estimated crowd of about 200 people; its usually not the case

as Pas supporters would braved the rain, willing to be soaked to the skin
to listen to the party's spiritual leader and Kelantan menteri besar speak.

The Sungai Terah polling district has about 95 per cent of Malay voters; in the 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional only managed 78 votes compared to Pas' 215 votes.

That was how strong the Islamist party's influence there then.

But Umno leaders are anticipating that the situation could change, they believe the level of support to Pas may dip when some 300 registered voters there go to the ballot again on Nov 4 to pick their new representative in the state legislative assembly.

"Our candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff had done a good job in the area, the people know him well because he had served the area as a manager in the South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar).

"He could well be the reason behind the positive signs we are getting in the area," says Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

The "ceramah perdana" in Sungai Terah are among the few big public rallies that Pakatan Rakyat had outlined for its bigwigs to speak -- the other speakers at the ceramah that day were Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP
secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Pas is adopting a "low profile, below the radar" campaign strategy for Galas and this had somewhat toned the otherwise heated campaigns like during the Manik Urai by-election, which is the first by-election in Kelantan, last year.

Pas leaders wanted more direct contacts with voters be carried out; opting for small group ceramah and door to door campaigning, which ironically the same strategy that Umno and BN has adopted.

No big rally had been planned on BN's side either, including the "Pentas Pemuda" that usually make its appearance in past by-elections. Only eight mini ceramahs involving between 30-40 people and similar number of 'salam sayang" programmes (chit chat sessions) by wanita Umno are being organised daily.

Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and his troops have been knocking on doors of those identified as fence-sitters in several areas daily. They even bumped into their opponents during their campaign trails, like the on in Kampung Mentara where Pas had won by 11 votes in the area in 2008.

A source also revealed there is a list of do's and dont's for Pas campaigners and that include not touching the Kelantan oil royalty issue and on Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is also the BN by-election director.

Canvassing for votes in whatever forms will continue until the eve of polling. For Abdul Aziz and his opponent from Pas, Dr Zulkefli Mohamad, the days ahead will be long and tiring.

BN aims for smaller, but effective meetings

2010/10/30
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: Barisan Nasional candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff said he would continue with his plan to personally meet as many voters as he could although such an approach could slow down his campaign trail.

"I want to know them apart from introducing myself as BN candidate. I also want to know the problems faced by the voters here," he told a press conference at BN operations centre in Bukit Cekati here.

Aziz, who is Gua Musang Umno division secretary, also refuted claims that the BN election machinery for Galas by-election was too slow. He said the party machinery was actually giving more focus on small gatherings which would enable them to understand the people's problems and needs.

"From the feedback that I personally gathered from voters, they are frustrated with the Pas state government's failure to issue land titles and provide affordable homes for them," he said.

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan who was present said BN would continue with its present approach, which was to hold dozens of small gatherings at different polling districts daily.

"We will use these gatherings to explain on BN government's development plan and counter all the allegations made by the opposition.

"It's more effective compared to big ceramahs," he said.

However, he said no gatherings would be held tonight as to allow BN campaigners and voters here to watch the Malaysia Cup final match between Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. He said BN would put giant projector screens at 14 locations as to allow the people here to watch the final match live.

CIMB Foundation chief executive Datuk Shukri Hussin (centre) with KLFA president Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz (left) and CIMB-YFA head coach N. Rada Krishnan at the launch of CIMB-YFA's Under-13 project team yesterday.

CIMB-Youth Football Academy (YFA) Bintang Muda have set themselves apart from the numerous football academies in the country by targeting qualification for the Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC) regional finals in 2013.

The launch of CIMB-YFA's Under-13 project team yesterday in Cheras is the first step in a plan that envisages the club playing in the third-tier FAM League by 2016.

Supported by CIMB Foundation and with the backing of Kuala Lumpur FA, CIMB-YFA head coach N. Rada Krishnan said the boys in the team will mature and develop together under the academy's guidance.

"They have been together since they were 10-years-old and played in the Under-12 Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup and are currently in action in the Under-14 One Malaysia-Cardiff City Cup where they have won seven of their eight matches so far.

"We want to groom them towards excellence and our main targets are to win the Under-15 MUPC national title and to qualify for the FAM League in 2016 when the boys would all be 18-years-old," said Rada Krishnan after the launch yesterday.

CIMB Foundation chief executive Datuk Shukri Hussin believes the academy's ambitions can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

"You've got to start somewhere even if it's a small step. It's an achievable target and it's good what they are trying to do," said Shukri.

KLFA president Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz concurred with Shukri and hoped other academies in the city would emulate CIMB-YFA's move.

"There has to be a symbiotic relationship between KLFA and the football academies. Rather than have them compete against each other, we hope to get them together and help us develop football in the city," said Astaman.

CIMB-YFA presently has 650 trainees of various age-groups centred at seven training locations in Pandah Indah, Sentul (two), Cheras, Sungai Buloh, Bukit Sentosa and Rawang.

Malaysia's top scorer Huzaini Yunos (right) and India's Vishal Chawan vie for the ball in the Asia-Australasian-African Polo Championships Polo World Cup Playoffs at the Royal Polo ground in Pekan yesterday.

MALAYSIA'S hopes of creating history by qualifying for the Polo World Cup finals came to an end when they were thrashed 12-5 by India in the Asia-Australasian-African Polo Championships Polo World Cup Playoffs at the Royal Polo ground in Pekan yesterday.

Malaysia failed to challenge an aggressive India counterparts who seemed to be more comfortable despite playing under scorching weather.

India captain Samir Suhag was the star, scoring seven goals, followed by Vishal Chawan and Simram Shergill with two goals each and Tarum Sirohi.

The national side replied through Huzaini Yunus (three goals) and Tengku Ahmad Shazkil and captain Shaik Reismann.

When the final whistle was blown, the Malaysian had to be consoled by team officials and family members.

National coach Carlos Pando admitted that India were a better team.

"They scored from all the opportunities they had and looked more superior on the field. The Malaysian players failed to take their chances and their conversion rate was poor compared to the match against New Zealand.

"The other teams have better goal differences and this defeat brings our campaign to an end," he said.

Meanwhile, Australia beat New Zealand 7-5 to revive their hopes for a place in the semi-finals.

Warring neighbours bury hatchet

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 12:18 AM PDT

2011/06/17
By Shenton Thomas De Silva

A TWO-YEAR-OLD conflict between two neighbours in Taman Bukit Tropica, Johor Baru, came to an end recently, thanks to the help of the Johor Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) and the Johor Baru MCA Complaints Bureau.

Both the bureaus managed to persuade the complainant, Ng Chee Leng, 32, and defendant, Yong Nguong Ping, 43, to bury the hatchet, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between them at the PCB office in Wisma Komtar in Johor Baru.

It is believed that the problem started when Yong allegedly turned up the volume of his hi-fi set, even late at nights, and this had disturbed Ng's family from sleeping. Besides, Ng also complained about the alleged nuisance created by Yong's dogs as well as his water pump.

The hatred festered into a gravely sour relationship, with Yong
allegedly throwing a can of paint into Ng's house, and also ramming his car into Ng's gate.

Yong disputed Ng's claims that he rears the dogs with the intention of disturbing the neighbourhood.

The matter was brought to the attention of the PCB whose director, Marshal Thegarajah, said the bureau asked the Johor Baru MCA Complaints Bureau for help in resolving the dispute because of language barrier.

Ng, who is a contractor, and Yong, a technician, lodged a complaint at the PCB on May 29 to seek a resolution to the dispute.

"This is purely a misunderstanding which could have been resolved earlier if both parties had communicated with each other," said Tay.

Both Marshal and Tay expressed confidence that Ng and Yong would adhere to their pledge in the MoU to communicate their dissatisfactions over any future problems with each other, "in writing, telephone or face- to-face".

"We believe they would not use violence to resolve any future problems," said Marshal.

Marshal said the bureau receives about 10 complaints each year involving neighbourhood problems.

The majority of complaints, however, tend to be of government bodies.

As of May 31, the PCB has settled 616 out of 653 cases involving complaints against the public sector.

New Rela platoon in Muar

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 09:34 AM PDT

THE role of the People's Volunteer Force (Rela) have become more
challenging because they are not only responsible for helping to maintain and preserve the nation's security, but also to monitor local crimes.

In Muar, assistant Rela officer
Jamaluddin Ahmad said Rela was
established in 1972 with the aim of enabling the public to volunteer their help to maintain peace and harmony.

He said the roles have widened with efforts now required to handle the
influx of illegal immigrants, and Rela has been recognised as the third line of defence against any enemy and crime.
"Therefore, members must perform their duties with sincerity and honesty and must act swiftly by

reporting any activities that might threathen the country's security.
"This is in line with the government's aim to turn Rela into an
excellent voluntary force and a

contributor to the country's defence," said Jamaluddin at the launch of Rela 0020 Platoon in Kampung Tengah Mukim Sungai Terap in Pagoh, Muar, recently.
The launch was officiated by Sungai Terap/Sungai Raya district headman, Zaid Marzi Bohari, who represented Pagoh Umno Youth chief Ismail Mohamed. — By Rizalman Hammim
