Melaka CM upset over media highlighting same-sex marriage

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:48 PM PDT

KULIM: Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has expressed regret over the playing up of news on the same-sex marriage of two men to take place soon in Malaysia.

He said highlighting the matter in the media gave the implication that
same-sex marriage was encouraged in the Malaysian community comprising people of
various races and religions.

The Star had reported on Thursday that self-confessed Malaysian gay pastor
Rev Ou Yang Wen Feng, 41, and his African-American partner Phineas Newborn III,

47, would marry at the end of this month or early next month, with the wedding
ceremonies to be held in New York and Malaysia.

The newspaper had ignored the sensitivity of the people in the country who
regarded same-sex marriage as something extraordinary and prohibited by
religion, Ali said at a Ramadan event organised by Kedah Puteri Umno in Kampung
Air Putih, Junjong, here last night.

He advised the people to be wary of this latest development in the way of

life and not to be influenced by it. Earlier, Ali gave away groceries and "duit raya" (cash) to about 200 poor people, single mothers and orphans. -- Bernama

Terengganu plant a pioneer in producing chemicals for animal feed

PUTRAJAYA: The world's first bio-methionine plant and its related facilities will be built in Malaysia for some RM2 billion, marking the country's largest industrial biotechnology investment so far.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who witnessed the announcement yesterday, said the plant, which will produce chemicals used in animal feed, was set to generate RM20 billion sales by 2020.

The project is a collaboration between investors CJ Cheiljedang from Korea and France's Arkema (CJ-Arkema), and project promoters — namely Malaysian Biotechnology Corp (BiotechCorp) and the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).

"This project will be a significant economic boost to the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and more importantly to the Special Economic Zone's Kertih Polymer Park," Najib said in a statement.

The investment will be a breakthrough for the global feed additives industry as for the first time, the production of bio-methionine will pool together both biotechnology advancement and applied chemistry. Bio-methionine is a sulphur amino acid widely used for animal feed in Asia.

BiotechCorp chief executive officer Datuk Dr Nazlee Kamal said this was a giant leap for Malaysia as a knowledge intensive and cost-effective industrial biotechnology hub in the region.

The 80,000-tonne bio-methionine production plant and the thiochemicals platform will occupy a 70ha area and be operational by 2013.

ECERDC chief executive officer Datuk Jebasingam Issace John said construction would begin in the middle of next year.

With this investment, ECERDC's target of securing RM5 billion worth of investment annually for ECER had been met earlier than expected.

The latest RM2 billion biotechnology investment would be spread over 10 years and more than half of the amount, estimated at US$400 million (RM1.2 billion), would be used to build the facility, said CJ Asia executive vice-president Jin-Hyun Kim.

C J- A rk em a 's decision to choose ECER as its site was due to the attractive fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, location and manpower availability, said Arkema Asia Pacific president Dominique Namer.

The project was expected to require a workforce of more than 470.

Seoul-based CJ is listed on the Korean Stock Exchange with a market value of US$2.98 billion. It is a leading producer of fermentation-based products such as feed amino acids, MSG and nucleotides with global manufacturing and business operations in six continents.

Arkema is France's leading chemicals producer and operates in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

In 2009, its revenue stood at US$5.88 billion.

It is listed on the Euronext Paris Exchange with a market value of US$6.34 billion. It has over 80 plants globally and the Asian market contributed 18 per cent of its sales, a figure it aimed to increase to 22 per cent by 2014.

Territorial Army mulls forming all-Chinese company

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:59 PM PDT

SIBU: Regiment 501 of the Territorial Army based at the Sri Rajang Camp here is considering setting up an all-Chinese company of about 120 officers and personnel.

Its deputy commandant, Lt Col Azman Mohd Yassin, said today the town had a
large Chinese population.

"We have three battalions in the state under the regiment comprising about
1,600 officers and men who are mostly bumiputera.

"Many Chinese in Melaka and Penang are in the territorial army, and we would
like the same to happen here," he told a news conference, here.

Azman said that if this could be done, Sarawak would create history in the
country with having the first all-Chinese company of the territorial army.

"We hope to recruit about 200 Chinese volunteers by the end of the year.
Today, we managed to recruit three," he said.

Azman said the regiment still required 40 per cent more volunteers to meet
its quota.

Those aged 18 to 45, in good health and with a minimum Penilaian Menengah
Rendah (PMR) education were eligible for selection, he added.

"Successful candidates will be given one-month basic military training, with
an allowance of about RM800 during that period.

"Of course, there will be chances for promotion, and those genuinely
interested in a military career can join the regular army after five years," he
said. -- Bernama

ZUBAIDAH ABU BAKAR:
Pas goes 'under the radar'

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:57 AM PDT

Even the presence of Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat at a ceramah in Pas stronghold Sungai Terah on Thursday failed to draw the crowd.

Many blamed the heavy rain which started to pour earlier but the rain had stopped before the Tok Guru took the microphone.

There was an estimated crowd of about 200 people; its usually not the case

as Pas supporters would braved the rain, willing to be soaked to the skin
to listen to the party's spiritual leader and Kelantan menteri besar speak.

The Sungai Terah polling district has about 95 per cent of Malay voters; in the 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional only managed 78 votes compared to Pas' 215 votes.

That was how strong the Islamist party's influence there then.

But Umno leaders are anticipating that the situation could change, they believe the level of support to Pas may dip when some 300 registered voters there go to the ballot again on Nov 4 to pick their new representative in the state legislative assembly.

"Our candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff had done a good job in the area, the people know him well because he had served the area as a manager in the South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar).

"He could well be the reason behind the positive signs we are getting in the area," says Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

The "ceramah perdana" in Sungai Terah are among the few big public rallies that Pakatan Rakyat had outlined for its bigwigs to speak -- the other speakers at the ceramah that day were Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP
secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Pas is adopting a "low profile, below the radar" campaign strategy for Galas and this had somewhat toned the otherwise heated campaigns like during the Manik Urai by-election, which is the first by-election in Kelantan, last year.

Pas leaders wanted more direct contacts with voters be carried out; opting for small group ceramah and door to door campaigning, which ironically the same strategy that Umno and BN has adopted.

No big rally had been planned on BN's side either, including the "Pentas Pemuda" that usually make its appearance in past by-elections. Only eight mini ceramahs involving between 30-40 people and similar number of 'salam sayang" programmes (chit chat sessions) by wanita Umno are being organised daily.

Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and his troops have been knocking on doors of those identified as fence-sitters in several areas daily. They even bumped into their opponents during their campaign trails, like the on in Kampung Mentara where Pas had won by 11 votes in the area in 2008.

A source also revealed there is a list of do's and dont's for Pas campaigners and that include not touching the Kelantan oil royalty issue and on Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is also the BN by-election director.

Canvassing for votes in whatever forms will continue until the eve of polling. For Abdul Aziz and his opponent from Pas, Dr Zulkefli Mohamad, the days ahead will be long and tiring.

BN aims for smaller, but effective meetings

2010/10/30
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: Barisan Nasional candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff said he would continue with his plan to personally meet as many voters as he could although such an approach could slow down his campaign trail.

"I want to know them apart from introducing myself as BN candidate. I also want to know the problems faced by the voters here," he told a press conference at BN operations centre in Bukit Cekati here.

Aziz, who is Gua Musang Umno division secretary, also refuted claims that the BN election machinery for Galas by-election was too slow. He said the party machinery was actually giving more focus on small gatherings which would enable them to understand the people's problems and needs.

"From the feedback that I personally gathered from voters, they are frustrated with the Pas state government's failure to issue land titles and provide affordable homes for them," he said.

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan who was present said BN would continue with its present approach, which was to hold dozens of small gatherings at different polling districts daily.

"We will use these gatherings to explain on BN government's development plan and counter all the allegations made by the opposition.

"It's more effective compared to big ceramahs," he said.

However, he said no gatherings would be held tonight as to allow BN campaigners and voters here to watch the Malaysia Cup final match between Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. He said BN would put giant projector screens at 14 locations as to allow the people here to watch the final match live.

Badminton / World Championships: Chong Wei gets closer to goal

LEE Chong Wei offered words of encouragement to Guatemala's Kevin Cordon at the end of their World Championships quarter-finals but there was also a feeling of relief for the Malaysian.

He was, after six long years, back in the semi-finals of the World Championships and with that burden off his shoulders, Chong Wei is primed for today's semi-finals.

The pressure is still immense, especially as he is the last Malaysian standing following the exit of men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boong Heong but as Chong Wei had stated at the start, he has been taking it one match at a time at London's Wembley Arena.

"It is a relief to make the semi-finals as that has been on my mind for a long time," said Chong Wei.

Questions about Cordon, who beat China's Chen Long en route to the quarter-finals, were brief as what was of interest was Chong Wei's take on the semi-finals.

"Cordon played extremely well. I congratulated him and expressed hope that he will build on this and improve even further," said the World No 1.

Improve is something Chong Wei can't do as he is at his peak and knows that London is just about his best chance to land the World Championships title.

He is expected to face reigning champion Chen Jin, who was involved in a late last eight tie against Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus yesterday, in the semi-finals today but defeat is highly unlikely.

"I last played him (Chen Jin) in the Asian Games semi-finals last year and I have watched him play here a couple of times. We know each other's game well and it will be a tough match if he advances."

But Chong Wei has been impressive at the Wembley Arena and only needed 24 minutes to finish off Cordon's challenge. In fact, the total time he has spent on court after four matches was a mere 111 minutes.

"I feel good and that is important, especially as the semi-finals and, hopefully, final will require me to be at my best."

Coach Tey Seu Bock, however, is confident that Chong Wei will advance to the final.

"His form has been improving from match to match. This is crucial in any championships. Chong Wei has a good feeling of the court and the stadium environment and is looking very comfortable in every match," said Seu Bock.

A measure of his confidence were Chong Wei's parting words before heading off for a rubdown.

"It is too bad that Kien Keat-Boon Heong lost and I am the last Malaysian left in the World Championships. This means more pressure but I have to accept that and continue to focus on my campaign," said Chong Wei.

Nemesis Lin Dan was involved in a late match against Japan's Sho Sasaki but with Chong Wei in the mood that he is in, the China star will surely not have it easy if the expected title showdown does take place tomorrow.

RESULTS: Men's singles, q-finals: Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt Kevin Cordon (Gua) 21-7, 21-13.

Doubles, q-finals: Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano (Ina) bt Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 21-18, 18-21, 24-22; Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong (Kor) bt Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong 21-17, 21-13; Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (Chn) bt Mads Conrad-Peterson-Jonas Rasmussen (Den) 21-10, 21-13.

Women's singles: Wang Xin (Chn) bt Saina Nehwal (Ind) 21-15, 21-10; Cheng Shao Chieh (Tai) bt Wang Shixian (Chn) 21-16, 21-17.

Squash / Australian Open: Nicol going full steam ahead

Nicol’s easier than expected win sets up a last-four clash with long-time rival Rachael Grinham.

Nicol's easier than expected win sets up a last-four clash with long-time rival Rachael Grinham.

NICOL David conceded just two points before Hong Kong's Annie Au retired with a leg injury to hand the five-time world champion a spot in the Australian Open semi-finals in Canberra yesterday.

Annie suffered the injury in her second round win over Denmark's Line Hansen a day earlier but the pain continued to affect the sixth seed in the quarter-finals.

Even when fully fit, Annie has never beaten Nicol in their previous six meetings so it was only a matter of time before the Asian Games runner-up called it quits with Nicol leading 11-0, 11-2, 4-0.

Nicol's easier than expected win sets up a last-four clash with long-time rival Rachael Grinham, who advanced by beating fellow Australian Donna Urquhart 11-7, 11-4, 11-7.

The top-seeded Nicol was aware that Annie was not moving well from the start but stuck to her normal game.

"I was focused on what I had to do because even if you think she's not there physically, she can still play shots and come up with winners," said Nicol, who defeated Annie to win the Asian Games gold medal last year and the Asian Championships this year.

"It was unfortunate because she was slowing down towards the end of each game so I knew something was not right."

Annie had hoped a rest overnight would have allowed the injury to heal but found her movement restricted on court.

"It was okay in practice but once we got into the match I couldn't twist my leg to play a shot. I thought it might get better but it didn't," said Annie.

Rachael now provides the opposition for Nicol, whom the third seed has not beaten in four years.

"I'm looking forward to it, trying to beat Nicol. I always want to play here but I tend to lose before I get to play her. I like to have the opportunity to play her if I feel in good shape and I feel pretty good at the moment," said Rachael, the 2007 world champion.

In other matches, Ireland's Madeline Perry avenged her Malaysian Open defeat to Joelle King of New Zealand with a 13-11, 2-11, 12-10, 11-9 win to set up a meeting with second seed Jenny Duncalf of England.

Jenny defeated Natalie Grinham of the Netherlands for just the third time in 17 meetings with an 11-4, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8 triumph.

Men's top seed Nick Matthew of England reached the semi-finals after overcoming Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands 11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-5.

US stocks end higher in volatile week

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:42 PM PDT

NEW YORK: US markets ended higher Friday as trade calmed at the end of one of the most turbulent weeks on record.

Adding to Thursday's 423-point rebound, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 125.71 points (1.13 per cent) to 11,269.02.

The broader S&P 500 was up 6.17 points (0.53 per cent) at 1,178.81, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 15.30 points (0.61 per cent) to 2,507.98.

The markets stayed in positive territory all day after a week characterised by sudden 400-point swings and daily losses and gains of some five per cent.

"Some of the fears that we had in the early part of the week have subsided to some extent, but we are certainly not out of the woods," said Michael James of Wedbush Securities.

"The only thing that you can be certain of is that significant volatility is going to continue in the near term."

The Dow's blue chips were led by a 4.9 per cent gain by Boeing and 4.1 per cent from Hewlett-Packard.

JPMorgan Chase lost 2.13 per cent.

On the Nasdaq, Yahoo was a big gainer, adding 5.6 per cent after seeing its shares pummeled over the past week.

Shares got a boost from positive data showing a 0.5 per cent rise in US consumer spending in July over June, which suggested that fears of the economy turning toward recession might be overblown.

Also helping was the strong close in European markets, as the week's newest frights over debt problems eased and authorities in four countries declared temporary bans on short-selling bank shares. -- AFP

LESSONS IN SAFETY

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:43 AM PDT

2011/08/12
By Rizalman Hammim

BP Mall's management decided to make its fire drill more interesting by staging a 'robbery-in-progress'

BP Mall recently held a fire drill which saw the participation of its management staff and tenants.

The drill also saw the participation of the Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the Batu Pahat Hospital.

BP Mall central manager Danny Tan said the mall is committed to the safety and security of staff, tenants and visitors of the mall.

"Besides fulfilling the requirements for the licence from the Fire and Rescue Department, the drill also helps us to improve on previous drills and ensure that all fire prevention procedures are proper and equipment in good working condition.

"I also hope that the drill would enable our emergency response team (ERT) to improve its skills and knowledge when faced with emergencies," said Tan.

The management of the mall decided to make the drill more interesting by staging a "robbery-in-progress" as "fire" broke out at the premises.

"We have tenants such as jewellery outlets and retails shops which can become targets for robbers, so we need to be prepared for such instances too.

"Our ERT has to be prepared for all manner of emergencies.

"So, we threw in a "robbery" in the drill to prepare our ERT should a robbery occur," said Tan

Tan said the drill owes it success to the support and cooperation of all parties, including staff, tenants and the emergency services.

"I would like to convey our gratitude for their cooperation and hard work," added Tan.

On hand to witness the drill were Batu Pahat Municipal Council president Abdul Rashid Ismail and representatives from the Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the Batu Pahat Hospital.

Rashid said such drills are important as they give opportunities for the building management to test the effectiveness of its building's fire prevention equipment and procedures.

He said fire drills are important because it is vital for employees and tenants of buildings to know what needs to be done when faced with emergencies.

"Although the owners or managers of buildings are not required to hold fire drills, such drills best prepare people in a building in case of a fire. Also, through such drills, the management would be better able to coordinate its actions with the emergency services so that it can safely evacuate the building," said Rashid.

He said organising such a drill would also help to increase the confidence of tenants and visitors of the mall as it shows that the management is committed to ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants.

Roger Van Damme will be sharing recipes of his favourite high-tea treats.

LANGKAWI : Over four days this October as part of its inaugural Visiting Chef Series, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi will present one of Europe's foremost patissiers (pastry chefs), world champion chef Roger Van Damme, who will conduct hands-on, interactive classes on mastering the art of fine pastry.

He will share recipes of his favourite high-tea treats as he creates a new Asian-inspired dessert infused with flavours of exotic Asian spices, fruits and flower s.

A master of aesthetics, taste and textures, Van Damme takes desserts to a whole new level of sweet pleasures using pr eci se measurements of ingredients and techniques to perfect his pastry d e l i g h t s.

He has distinguished himself as one of the most innovative Belgian patissiers (pastry chefs) — he clinched the title, Chef of the Year by Gault Millau last year, and the eminent Michelin Star this year.

He trained at the celebrated Ter Groene Poort culinary school in Bruges, Belgium, and soon after graduation, Van Damme embarked on his life-long dream when he started to work for Huize Van Wely, one of the most famous dessert makers in the Netherl a n d s.

Today a dream location for food lovers the world over, the historical botanical herb garden in the heart of Antwerp is the beautiful backdrop for Van Damme's cosy restaurant Lunch Lounge Het Gebaar, where he and his wife and their team c r e at e dessert delights that surprise with exquisite flavours and s c e n t s.

A celebrity chef, Van Damme began his own television show at Njam.tv last year and launched his own cookbook, Desser ts, which made No. 2 on the bestseller list after just one week.

Possessing inimitable talent and creative flair, he enjoys experimenting and creating inventive and refreshing new desserts, preserving the harmony of taste throughout.

Influencing his dessert style are his friends Sergio Herman and Albert Adrià, the dessert maestro of El Bulli. With imagination as his guide, this pastry genius who is dedicated to continual innovation constantly challenges and enriches the palate with his sweet t e m p t at i o n s.

Over three master classes from Oct 26 to 29 at the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi's signature Italian restaurant, Serai, Van Damme will impart some of his secrets in making perfect pastry — infusing flavours, improving texture, and heightening natural flavours. The three-hour classes will close with a sumptuous daily afternoon tea. To end on a sweet note, a gourmet four-course dinner featuring Van Damme's sweet indulgences will be held at Serai restaurant on Oct 29.
