Suicidal S. Koreans plunging into Seoul waterway

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 10:23 PM PDT

SEOUL: A total of 301 South Koreans tried to kill themselves by jumping into the Han River in Seoul last year and 115 of them succeeded, a lawmaker said, calling for extra precautions.

Kim Choong-Joh, a legislator with the opposition Democratic Party, wants the early installation of CCTV systems on major bridges or weight sensors on railings to detect suicide attempts.

Kim, citing data from police and the Seoul rescue agency in a statement seen Tuesday, said a total of 1,480 people had plunged into the broad Han River, which bisects the capital, between 2006 and last month.

Of these, 522 died, he said, giving figures which indicate a suicide death every four days.

The figure for suicide bids in the Han grew from 261 in 2006 to 301 last year.

Police said earlier this year that suicidal people were increasingly choosing the river instead of subway stations after platform screen doors were installed at many stations.

South Korea has one of the world's highest suicide rates, with 15,413 taking their lives in 2009 in the country of 48.6 million. -- AFP

Former UKM lecturer freed after winning appeal against cheating

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 10:20 PM PDT

SHAH ALAM: The High Court today acquitted and discharged a former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer whom a lower court had sentenced to six years jail in 2009 for cheating.

Judge Datuk Siti Mariah Ahmad, in delivering the judgement on the appeal, said the Ampang Sessions Court had erred in terms of law and facts when convicting Dr Shaharuddin Datuk Aziz, 62.

The Sessions Court had sentenced Dr Shaharuddin to six years jail on Dec 3, 2009, after finding him guilty of having cheated businessman Cheah So On of US$300,000 (about RM1.14 million then) at the office of Sedaran Timor Sdn Bhd in Taman Melawati in February 1996.

Dr Shaharuddin was charged with having deceived Cheah into believing that he was the holder of the power of attorney with regard to 27 hectares of land belonging to Peramah Setia (M) Sdn Bhd in Sungai Buloh, Perlis, which, it was said, could be developed for housing after getting a bank guarantee of RM6 million from the Kangar (Perlis) branch of Public Bank.

Dr Shaharuddin was alleged to have induced Cheah into handing over the US$300,000 by way of a bank draft issued by the Leboh Pantai (Penang) branch of then Bumiputra Commerce Bank Bhd to obtain approval of the RM6-million bank guarantee.

Siti Mariah said she gleaned from the oral and written arguments of appeal that all payments between Dr Shaharuddin and Cheah had been made based on a memorandum of understanding between them.

Dr Shaharuddin, when met outside the court later, said he was grateful for the court's decision and expressed his intention to pursue his career in genetics in which he had the expertise.

Dr Shaharuddin was represented by lawyer Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman while Deputy Public Prosecutor Norshuhaida Zainal Azahar appeared for the prosecution. -- BERNAMA

Both sides display professionalism

GUA MUSANG: Leaders from both the Barisan Nasional and Pas demonstrated a high level of professionalism during nominations for the Galas state seat today, ensuring a smooth, fast and clean nomination process.

The BN delegation was led by Umno vice-president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Wanita Umno chief, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Wanita MCA chief, Datuk Ng Yen Yen and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, while the Pas delegation was helmed by its party president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president Azmin Ali and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.

Both delegations arrived separately and though seated in different tents were seen chatting with each other in a very cordial and peaceful manner.

At one point, Shahrizat was seen leading a delegation of Wanita Umno members to visit the Opposition tent.

There, Shahrizat warmly greeted Hadi Awang, who stood up to greet her, along with Kit Siang and Azmin.

Hadi Awang asked Shahrizat how the recently concluded Umno general assembly had progressed and congratulated her on a smooth and successful assembly.

"It went well. There were no problems and everyone was happy," said Shahrizat, who also took time to ask Kit Siang about his health.

"I'm well ... how about you," asked the DAP stalwart.

The group then spent a few minutes chatting and later returned to their respective camps.

Overall, there was not a single untoward incident and supporters from both sides demonstrated a high level of professionalism.

"We are very happy with how the nominations progressed and hope this same kind of spirit will prevail throughout the campaign period and on polling day also," said Kelantan police chief, Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.

Abdul Rahim has assured both the Barisan Nasional, who will be fielding Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, for the seat and Pas' Dr Zulkefli Mohamed,44, that the police will not reject any permits for ceramahs, as long as it is submitted a day earlier.

There were more than 500 supporters on each side and police, who had anticipated large crowds had took steps to place the groups 180 metres apart as opposed to only 60 metres as in previous by-elections.

There was also very smooth traffic flow, with no major disturbances to the locals who were busy on their way to work.

"We did not close any major roads and did our best not to disturb the daily lives of the people here," said Abdul Rahim.

New faces expected in Sarawak election

KUCHING: The coming state election may see the most number of new faces within the Sarawak Barisan Nasional in its history.

In the past, it has been the practice of BN to maintain the incumbents to ensure political stability - the fewer changes made, the less risk would be at stake.

However, since the last state election in 2006, the general public's mentality seems to have shifted to opt for new blood and younger state representatives, especially after the op position made it a point to recruit young professionals with no historical baggage or even political background to stand as their candidates.

While BN had little time to react to this change in the last state election, this time around, however, one can expect to see BN putting forth new faces to replace some of the incumbents, especially those who did not secure impressive majorities in the last state elections.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), for instance, did not wait for the coming election to make known its intention to replace some of the incumbents.

As early as November 2008, its president Tan Sri Taib Mahmud replaced three PBB assistant ministers when reshuffling his Cabinet - Datuk Bolhassan Di (Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communica tion), Datuk Hamden Ahmad (Assistant Minister of Youth as well as Tourism) and Datuk Ambrose Blikau (Assistant Minister of Rural Development as well as Public Utilities).

With growing rumours that a state election would take place March 26 (which coincides with Taib's 30th an niversary as Chief Minister) next year, there are predictions that more than a handful of PBB incumbents would be dropped after Taib's declaration of 30 per cent new faces.

PBB was allocated 35 out of the 71 state seats in the last elections and 30 per cent new faces would mean 10 new candidates, which was also confirmed by party insiders.

Those on top of the list speculated to be dropped are the three dropped assistant minsiters Bolhassan (Beting Maro), Hamden (Belawai) and Blikau (Katibas).

Others included Dr Wahbi Junaidi (Saribas; 94-vote ma jority), Simoi Peri (Lingga; 1870-vote majority), Gramong Juna (Machan; 2,289-vote majority), Frederick Bayoi (Kedup; 1981-vote majority) and Wan Wahap (Sadong Jaya, 858-vote majority).

Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), meanwhile, has been going on its rounds to solve issues, reaching out to young voters and recruiting thousands of them. SUPP has also produced dramas to rekindle among the veteran party members their initial love and sacrifice for the party.

These efforts were taken note of by the Chinese, but initial grassroots feedback seems to indicate no significant impact as yet on Chinese voters.

"Every day, we make it a point to spend time with our voters. We are experiencing a total transformation especially with regards to our candidates," said its president Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam.

SUPP plans to put forth at least 30 per cent new faces and no "recycled candidates". These changes are expected in all the areas it had lost ground previously, such as Padungan, Pending, Batu Lintang, Kidurong, Merandong and Bukit Assek. SUPP has 19 allocated constituencies.

Only one recycled candidate would be expected, namely Datuk Alfred Yap, contesting in Kota Sentosa which he lost by 531 votes to Sarawak DAP secretary general Chong Chieng Jen.

For Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) which has been allocated nine seats, its president Datuk Seri Dr James Masing has stated that there would be at least two new faces, speculated to be at Ngemah and Pelagus.

Ngemah was lost to Gabriel Adit, a former BN member who is now Parti Cinta Malaysia Sarawak state chief.

Pelagus, a seat of dispute due to Larry Sng's expulsion from the party after challenging Masing's presidency, remains a problem that BN needs to solve before the state elections is called.

To Masing, the Pelagus seat is non-negotiable.

Sng, who has been a partyless assistant minister over the last three years, would have to be absorbed by other component parties and contest in another constituency besides Pelagus if he wished to stand under the BN banner.

Speculation is that he would either stand in Meradong, the birthplace of his tycoon father-in-law Tan Sri Ting Phek Kiing, if he is to be absorbed by SUPP; or Meluan, replacing Wong Judat, should he be accepted by Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

Holding eight seats, SPDP's president Datuk Seri William has said that he would retain all the incumbents.

However, it has been reported that the four state as semblymen within "the disgruntled five" namely Datuk Peter Nansian (Tasik Biru), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu), Sylvester Entri (Marudi) and Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau) would be replaced with new faces.

"The disgruntled five", which also includes Mas Gading Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, was given the nickname when they teamed up to call on party president Mawan to resign.

They claimed that Mawan, who is also the State Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, was influenced by an invisible hand when he did not re-appoint Entri as the party secretary-general.

The five walked out from a SPDP supreme council meeting when Mawan replaced Entri.

Safee Sali spent two weeks training with Cardiff City.

Safee Sali spent two weeks training with Cardiff City.

CARDIFF: Malaysia striker Safee Sali, 27, leaves for home today with hopes that one day he will return as a player with Cardiff City.

After two weeks of trials with the Malaysian-owned team, Safee, dubbed the "Malaysian Beckham" by a Welsh newspaper, was full of enthusiasm.

Watching the Cardiff City versus Leicester City match on Sunday, Safee was a known figure among the Cardiff City crowd, mingling and signing autographs.

"I have really had a good experience here, one that is beneficial for my football career, and also one that will benefit the national team," he said.

"The training here is indeed more professional and there is much to learn from them; full concentration, speed and fast and decisive actions. Their standards are really high," he said.

"Football is a team game and I know what I bring back with me will benefit my team. This kind of opportunity is indeed very valuable and I hope many more will have the chance to train here and together, we can form a top team for the country."

It is the striker's hope that he would be able to play with the team but for now, he said it was up to Cardiff and their manager to evaluate his abilities.

And then there is the visa issue, which Safee could not comment much about as it all depended on whether he is selected by the club.

"I do hope to play for the club as I have done my best but it is up to the manager here and also the visa."

CYPRIOT Marcos Baghdatis won his 200th career match on the ATP Tour in style by upsetting World No 40 and sixth seed Alex Bogomolov Jr 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the first round of the Malaysian Open at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The World No 60, who struggled in the recent US Open, needed to produce his best tennis to overcome his on-form opponent.

Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open finalist, and the bad-tempered Bogomolov started cautiously as both held serve to force a tie-break before the former broke serve three times to win the first set 7-3 in 54 minutes.

It was the same story in the second set as both players preferred to stay on the baseline. Baghdatis then raised his tempo in the ninth game and held two match points at 40-15 but Bogomolov, who was on serve, saved both for deuce.

The 26-year-old, who has won two ATP titles, however got the better of Bogomolov to earn his place in the second round, where he will face either India's Asian Games champion Somdev Devvarman or Russian qualifier Mikhail Ledovskikh.

Bogomolov was warned by the chair umpire for throwing his racquet on the court several times during the match.

"You don't really think about it (200th win on the ATP Tour). It is the first round and you just try your hardest to win," said Baghdatis.

"Alex (Bogomolov) played really well and so I had to up my game. It was an even match between us but I had the little bit of edge just enough to win."

In the battle of two wild cards, Belgium's World No 223 David Goffin earned his second career match victory by ousting Australia's World No 137 Matthew Ebden 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Goffin, 20, broke Ebden's serve in the seventh game to win the first set but stomach problems saw him struggle in the second, where he had to come back from 5-2 down to clinch victory in only his second ATP-level tournament this year.

"I have been having stomach problems for the last two days. I called for medical help during the match. I hope I will recover in time for my second round match," said the Belgian.

He will face either Russia's Dmitry Tursunov or Chile's Paul Capdeville, who were involved in a late match, in the second round.

RESULTS: Men's singles -- 1st rd: David Goffin (Bel) bt Matthew Ebden (Aus) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); Marcos Baghdatis (Cyp) bt Alex Bogomolov (Usa) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Qualifying (3rd rd): Mikhail Ledovskikh (Rus) bt Tatsuma Ito (Jpn) 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6); Rik De Voest (Rsa) bt Michael Yani (Usa) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; Marinko Matosevic (Aus) bt Rajeev Ram (Usa) 6-3, 6-4; Teymuraz Gabashvili (Rus) bt Zhang Ze (Chn) 6-2, 6-4.

SHOW OF PATRIOTISM

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 10:26 AM PDT

2011/09/25
By Jassmine Shadiqe

The Patriot Foundation celebrated the nation's 54th Merdeka by holding a historical showcase and carnival

IN their first public event, Sept 17, the Patriot Foundation (TPF) held its "Tribute to Merdeka".

TPF is a non-political and non-profitable outfit whose members share the goal of keeping patriotism alive.

Founder and president Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Tengku Hamid Jumat said the event was planned as an educational programme aimed at helping the government to disseminate information about Merdeka to the public, especially schoolchildren and youth in and around Johor Baru.

It started when Tengku Putra told TPF members of a 45-minute video on Merdeka that he had obtained from Filem Negara.

The video showed how Tunku Abdul Rahman worked with Tun Sir Tan Cheng Lock and Tun V.T Sambanthan to secure the country's independence from Britain.

"That was unity at its best. I felt a strong need to share the video with as many people as we could," he said.

He said they started planing for a carnival-like event, which would support the nationwide Merdeka celebrations.

Held at the football field in Taman Setia Tropika, Johor Baru, the event attracted about 300 people.

It began at 5pm and continued into the night.

It was divided into four segments -- the Japanese Occupation, the British era and the pre- and post-Merdeka years.

The segment showcased exhibits such as old bicycles (Japanese Occupation) and a 1972 Land Rover and models wearing uniforms of Japanese soldiers, communists and the Royal Malay Regiment.

There was also a voter registration exercise, free health screening and blood donation drive.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a commemorative plaque to Abdul Rahman Khamis, 86, who killed seven communists including a bodyguard of Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng during the insurgency .

Rahman, who was attached to the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, was also on guard when the country's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, hoisted the Jalur Gemilang for the first time on Aug 31, 1957.

Guests were teary-eyed when the "Road to Independence" video was aired after the plaque presentation ceremony.

It showed the signing of the Federal Agreement between the sultan of the Malay Federated States and the British Government in 1948, the Japanese Occupation, the formation of the Malayan Union, the negotiations for Independence, the lowering of the Union Jack and hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang at the stroke of midnight on August 31, 1957 at the field in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur and the cry of Merdeka seven times at the Merdeka Stadium on the same day.

After the video presentation, TPF members reenacted the cry of Merdeka scene and the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang.

A special prayer on Merdeka was recited.

Everybody at the football field also recited the Rukunegara. Some were choked with emotion as they sang Negaraku.

The night ended with a three-minute fireworks.

TPF is now considering making the Tribute to Merdeka an annual event.

"From the rakyat to the rakyat... for Malaysians of all walks of life and political ideologies. Everyone is a VIP," Tengku Putra said.

"There will be no politics, no speeches, just a grand show of patriotism and fun. We want to keep patriotism alive."

TPF welcomes feedback and suggestions on basic social, political and economic issues, which they can help highlight to the government through open channels.

TPF, formed three years ago, is not open for membership but the public can take part in its activities.

From secretary to businesswoman

by Mayzathul Jaffar

JOHOREANS are known to be fussy about their food. It must taste just right.

It is this fussiness that has made the state's dishes, kuih raya and biscuits famous throughout the country.

Generally, biscuits and kuih raya made in Johor have a good reputation among the people of Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan. I have also heard compliments from people of other states.

I started my kuih raya, biscuit and cake business 18 years ago. Mayde Cookies is at Kampung Melayu Majidee, Johor Baru.

Baking has been my passion since I was 10. My mother told my sibling and I to bake kuih raya as we could not afford to buy them at the shops.

I have never stopped baking and it is now my main source of income.

Right now, my business is running at 10 per cent of what it was during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season. I usually employ about 10 workers, including my relatives, during peak periods such as Hari Raya.

I roped in my 21-year-old niece Fatin Shafiqa Mahadi and my young neighbour, Aishah Kamal, to help out during the recent Hari Raya season.

The only downside to my relatives working for me is that they have to take criticism like any of my employees. I am strict when it comes to work.

Now, I am receiving orders from local customers and Singaporeans for Deepavali, Hari Raya Aidil Adha, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

After that, I will spend a few months planning my ingredients and recipes before starting to work for next year's festive season.

I make more than 30 types of biscuits. I have to be innovative to ensure that my biscuits and cakes are in demand.

For instance, I recently created almond Oreo-type biscuits as almonds have become increasingly popular in recent years.

A few years ago, I began incorporating raspberry jam into some of my creations.

However, such experimentation is inappropriate for traditional biscuits such as kuih makmur and pineapple tart.

Besides ensuring the quality of my products, I adopt a very specific strategy to market my products.

I have a large network of dealers, who act as promoters and distributors of my biscuits and cakes.

I believe in sharing my profit with the people who with me. During the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season, each dealer is given a 10 to 15 per cent commission.

That is a hefty amount if the sales volume is big. I have not marketed my products in hypermarkets or large stores.

I have also been operating a beauty salon in Larkin Perdana for 15 years. I opened the saloon because I believe in diversifying my business.

My goal for the next two years is to set up a restaurant which specialises in lontong, laksa Johor and other traditional delicacies.

I want to create food for the soul. My restaurant will serve food that is tasty and leave a lasting impression on customers.

Mayzathul Jaffar, 40, worked as a secretary for former Tanjung Puteri assemblyman Mohamad Kasbi before she started her own business.
