New quakes rock New Zealand's Christchurch

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 07:00 PM PDT

CHRISTCHURCH: A series of strong quakes, including a 6.0-magnitude tremor, rocked New Zealand's stricken Christchurch Monday, causing one building to collapse and prompting evacuations.

Power company Orion said electricity had been cut to 54,000 homes. The US Geological Survey measured the latest quake at a depth of nine kilometres (5.6 miles) and some 14 kilometres from the country's second largest city.

It followed a string of shocks early Monday, including a 5.2-magnitude jolt which caused building damage in the city, still recovering from a deadly 6.3 magnitude disaster in February.

"It's been a nasty shake. People will be shaken," Christchurch mayor Bob Parker, adding that emergency services would have sprung to action within seconds of the jolts, but it was too early to detail injuries.

"I just hope that the reports of injuries I'm getting are minor injuries," he told Sky News.

Police confirmed that a structure had fallen over in central Christchurch, much of which is still blocked off after the February 22 earthquake levelled much of the city, but said nobody was trapped.

"We've checked the collapsed building and it's all clear," a police spokesman told AFP. The size of the building was not known.

The 6.0 magnitude aftershock prompted police to evacuate parts of the damaged central city known as the red zone, while rock falls had closed several bridges and prompted the closure of one police station.

Police urged residents to check on friends and neighbours, and to stay at home and avoid travelling if possible, but residents gridlocked the roads as they attempted to find their way home and reach family.

The series of quakes came just hours after the opening of an inquest examining why an office block collapsed in February's earthquake, killing more than 100 people, including 65 foreign students.

When the first tremors hit around lunchtime, lawyers and relatives of those killed when the Canterbury Television (CTV) building toppled and then burst into flames on February 22 fled the building as windows rattled.

The inquest was briefly suspended before being hit by the later quakes.

Geoscience Australia seismologist David Jepson said people would have been shaken quite strongly after New Zealand's South Island had endured much seismic activity in recent months.

"It seems like they are going to keep happening. Since they had that really big earthquake it seems to me like it activated all these different faults. But it's just a guessing game what is going to happen next," he said. - AFP

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into football match-fixing looks set to widen when a Singaporean, who was remanded here last Thursday, was rearrested minutes after being released by the magistrate's court here yesterday.

The remand order ended yesterday and the man was produced at the court where magistrate Noradila Abdul Latif set him free after the Terengganu MACC stated it was satisfied with its investigation during the remand period.

The man was allegedly involved in bribing Terengganu T-Team players and fixing the team's President Cup matches last year.

However, the man had barely walked out of the courtroom when he was rearrested by a team of MACC officers from Putrajaya.

State MACC director Mohd Yusoff Mohd Zain confirmed that the man had been rearrested under Section 4(1) of the Money Laundering and Terror Funding Prevention Act 2001.

The suspect, in his 50s, was taken to the MACC office in Putrajaya for further investigation.

He was arrested in Seremban on June 8 and was brought here on Thursday where a four-day remand order was obtained.

It was understood that some T-Team players and officials were called to the state MACC office more than a week ago after former team manager Mohd Sabri Abas alleged that at least eight players were involved in match-fixing.

I have no proof of RM6m payment: Witness

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:22 PM PDT

SHAH ALAM: A freelance landscaper told the High Court that he did not have any documents to prove that he had received RM6 million from Dr Mohd Khir Toyo as payment to transform the former Selangor MB's house into a Balinese concept style mansion.

Witness Nasir Ismail, 55, admitted that he only had an agreement signed between him and Dr Khir stating that the works carried out only cost RM600,000.

He, however, said that agreement was only a "formality' as Dr Khir wanted a document from him stating that amount as he needed it to buy the property from Ditamas Sdn Bhd.

The trial continues this afternoon with Ditamas' director Shamsuddin Hayroni taking the stand.

Filipino journalist slain; 4th killed this year

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:08 PM PDT

MANILA: A hard-hitting radio commentator was fatally shot Monday on his way to work in the eastern Philippines, becoming the fourth journalist slain this year in a country with a dismal record of prosecuting the killers.

Two witnesses who brought the bloodied body of Romeo Olea to a hospital said they heard gunshots and saw the radioman's motorcycle fall on its side along a deserted stretch of highway, police Superintendent Ronald Briones said.

He said the witnesses did not see who fired the two shots in Iriga city in Camarines Sur province.

Briones said the killing of the 49-year-old commentator for the provincial radio station DWEB-FM was most likely related to his work. Olea's wife told police that her husband had received death threats.

The Philippines is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. It ranks third on a list by the Committee to Protect Journalists of places with high numbers of media killings yet very few convictions. Only Iraq and Somalia are ahead of the Philippines on the group's impunity index.

Fewer than 10 people have been convicted in about 145 media killings since 1986, when democracy was restored, said National Union of Journalists of the Philippines President Nestor Burgos Jr. Out of the 145 deaths, more than 100 occurred since 2001.

In 2009, at least 31 journalists were among 57 people massacred in a political killing allegedly carried out by members of a powerful provincial clan in the southern Philippines. The body of a 32nd journalist who was part of the convoy has not been found.

Briones said police were investigating the threats Olea had received by phone about two weeks ago.

News reports and commentaries criticizing local politicians for alleged corruption and irregularities have been the main reason for a slew of assassinations targeting journalists. Even when suspected triggermen are caught, the masterminds are rarely exposed.

THOUSANDS of fans turned up at the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu yesterday afternoon to welcome the Terengganu team who returned with the FA Cup trophy after defeating Kelantan 2-1 at the National Stadium.

Winning the FA Cup after a lapse of 11 years, the players and team officials were joined by fans in a parade from the airport to the city, showing off the trophy to cheering supporters along the way.

The team ended their celebrations in the early evening at the Shahbandar Square where they were joined by thousands of more fans eager to pose with the trophy and shake hands with the FA Cup winners.

The "most sought after" player at the meet-the-fans session was Ahmad Nordin Alias who scored the winning goal for Terengganu in the 110th minute of extra time.

Surprised to be mobbed by the fans, the shy and soft-spoken 26-year-old midfielder said while the goal was personally special to him, he did not know that it would elevate him to hero status with the fans.

"That goal means the world to me as it was my first ever goal this season and as it turned out, it was also the goal that gave the FA Cup back to us.

"In the beginning, I was just happy to be on the bench but then after Kelantan took the lead, I was itching to get on the field and my chance came when coach Irfan (Bakti) gave me the signal to go in with about 20 minutes left in regulation time," he said.

The Marang-born player, who went in for Ismail Faruqi Ashaari, said he thought the match would end in Kelantan's favour before the own goal by Kelantan defender Daudsu Jamaluddin with barely a minute left on the clock.

"We came back from the dead and in extra-time we had re-newed hopes and we began to play with a little more purpose.

"Honestly speaking, the goal that I scored is a blur to me now as I only remember taking up position in the penalty box, found the ball at my feet and seconds later I heard the crowd roar, he said.

Ahmad Nordin, who used to play for Kuala Muda Naza before joining Terengganu in 2008, said he hoped that his cup-winning goal will influence the coach to play him more in future matches.

"I have been playing second fiddle to Ismail, Reeshafiq (Alwi), Ashaari (Samsuddin) and Joseph (Kallang Tie) for too long now and hopefully, I will get a chance to prove my worth again in the next two league matches.

"We have two crucial league matches against T-Team on Tuesday (tomorrow) and Felda United FC early next month and I hope I will be part of those matches too as I want to help my team win the league title too," said Ahmad Nordin, a graduate of Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Polytechnic in Dungun.
