'Don't manipulate price hike issue'

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 11:00 PM PDT

GEORGE TOWN: A deputy minister has reminded the people against being fooled by the opposition tactic of manipulating the issue of price hikes.

Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said the opposition had begun using the issue as a strategy to garner votes in the next general election.

The people should understand that price hikes were a global issue and did not occur only in Malaysia, she told reporters after attending a programme to explain the issue of price hikes here last night.

"The ministry is going down to the people to explain the price hikes and reminding them not to be fooled by the opposition propaganda," she said.

Tan said the people should realise that price hikes were inevitable due to rising population, changing weather patterns and higher demand for food worldwide. -- BERNAMA

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 10:40 PM PDT

SEPANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who returned today from working visits to three countries, said he had cancelled a holiday with the family abroad to spend more time with the people in Malaysia.

He said he was thankful to his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and their children for having agreed with him to come back earlier from overseas.

"I told my family I felt that I should return to Malaysia and that I was prepared to forgo the holiday for the sake of Malaysians back home," he said when addressing about 3,000 people who had gathered at the Bunga Raya Complex of the KL International Airport to greet him on his return.

Najib had been abroad on official visits to Turkmenistan, the United Kingdom and Italy.

Today, he is scheduled to go on a walkabout in Subang Perdana, attend Friday prayers at the Subang Perdana Mosque and have lunch with the people at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan U3, Subang Perdana.

Najib said he informed Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that it was important that both of them and the other ministers as well to go down to the ground to meet the people.

"We have to meet the people. We have to tell them that they can depend on the Barisan Nasional government, that the BN is their best choice," he said. Najib is scheduled to visit Perlis tomorrow.

Muhyiddin and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein were at the airport to greet Najib.

Najib was greeted with a banner carrying the signatures of about 1.2 million Malaysians expressing their support for his leadership as the prime minister.

The signature campaign was initiated by the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress, an associate member of Umno. -- BERNAMA

I can take on Aziz anytime: Dr Zul

GUA MUSANG: Pas' candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed remained a good sport over jokes that his stocky frame might tire him fast during the campaign trail.

He said he was used to work long hours when he was a doctor at government hospitals in the past.

"There were times when I had to work over 36 hours on a stretch, then. I think I can keep up with the hectic campaign schedule now," he said.

Dr Zulkefli, 44, will be up against Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, in the Galas by-election on Nov 4.

Some segments of political watchers have been heard making comparisons between the two candidates of their physiques.

Such light banter follows an absence of substantive issues to debate since campaigning started on Nov 26.

Dr Zulkefli said he was feeling alright even when there were many places to visit over the past three days.

To keep fit, he said he took a lot of water and sufficient rest.

When a reporter asked about his weight, Dr Zulkefli said: "I do not know. Let us keep it as a secret."

In jest, he said he could take on Aziz in a running or tug-of-war competition.

Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures.
The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership.

A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself.

I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ".

Frankly how many can do that ?

This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example.

Traits of great leader who make small people feel great.

Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders.

It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count.

We should not trumpet about it.

High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah.

Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation.

Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible.

The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number.

In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ?

Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind.

My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise.

And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful.

The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered.

First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?.

Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ?

The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members.

However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants.

Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency, the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident.

Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different.

As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say, with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters.

From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess.

To me the annoucement seems to be made in conjunction with the coming BN convention in Kuala Lumpur in an effort to influence its outcomes

Football: Blues' dubious victory

A DUBIOUS own goal was all that separated mighty Chelsea from a make-shift Malaysian Selection, whose players more than justified their presence in the team at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Substitute goalkeeper Izham Tarmizi was unfortunate to have the ball hit him in the back after coming off the post from Didier Drogba's free-kick and there was much doubt that the ball had even crossed the line.

That "goal" in the 79th minute was Chelsea's only saving grace on a night of high disappointment for some of their top players, having came earlier with high hopes of racking up a huge score.

The Blues will leave Kuala Lumpur after being nearly embarrassed by Ong Kim Swee's side as quite a few national players emerged with credit from the game.

Centre-backs Norhafiz Zamani Misbah and S. Subramaniam handled Fernando Torres and Drogba with great composure while goalkeeper Farizal Marlias was a steady pair of hands behind them.

Yossi Benayoun, who had been barracked by the crowd whenever he was on the ball, had his close-range attempt blocked by Fandi Othman while Farizal produced fine saves to deny Patrick Van Anhaalt and John Obi Mikel.

Only the poor finishing of A. Thamil Arasu late in the game denied the Malaysians a share of the spoils.

"It was a normal game for us, there was no pressure to get a result and the players played with dedication and good character.

"It's a good result although I have to look back at the replays to see if that was a goal or not," said Kim Swee, who gained the backing of the majority of the 85,000 crowd as the game went on.

Kim Swee, who began the match with all nine of his senior players, said the youngsters who came on in the second became more confident for as long as the score remained at 0-0.

"I started with the seniors because of their experiece and in the second-half, the players grew in confidence. This gave the younger players who came on the belief that we could score an upset.

"As for the missed chance (by Thamil), I think even Torres and Drogba missed chances. They will learn from this," added Kim Swee.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas again had to fend off questions about the misfiring Torres, who other than a miscue under pressure from Subramaniam in the first-half, was anonymous in his 45-minute appearance.

"I don't want to turn it into an obsession," said Villas-Boas. "Most important is to score and win, who scores does not matter. It's a pre-season game and the importance here is to find a feel of our team and achieve the objectives of our training.

"I prefer to look at the forward sector (as a whole) rather than on individuals. The strikers will gain confidence to find the back of the net through training, patience and tolerance.

"The important thing here to me is the collective play. Every single player finds extreme competitiveness and wants to be successful."

Villas-Boas, who fielded two separate elevens in each half, praised the Malaysian team for their dogged determination in making life difficult for Chelsea's millionaires,

"We came short today (yesterday) but I won't worry too much about it. We have to find efficiency in front of goal but we created chances to score and Malaysia also had a chance to draw level.

"It was a good display by Malaysia, they were competitive throughout and showed their quality. I'm sure the Malaysian coach would be happy with their performance," said Villas-Boas.

DIVER Bryan Nickson Lomas will join Pandelela Rinong at next year's London Olympics after he qualified for the men's 3m springboard final at the World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai yesterday.

Bryan, 21, collected a total of 442.70 points to finish 10th in the semi-finals after initially dropping to 15th when he only managed to score 64.35 on his third dive.

Bryan, however, pulled his way back into the top 12 with scores of 78.75, 78.20 and 76.50 in his remaining attempts to make the cut for the final.

The top 12 divers from yesterday's semi-finals qualified for the London Olympics and the event will be Bryan's third appearance at the Games after competing in 2004 in Athens and in 2008 in Beijing.

Pandelela finished out of the medals but managed a respectable fifth in the women's 10m platform final. The 18-year-old was briefly placed third after her first dive which scored 76.50 but was let down by her next two dives of 68.15 and 57.60 which saw her drop to sixth.

Her last two dives, which both scored 76.80, saw her finish fifth overall with a total of 355.85 points.

Pandelela, who is not at her best after injuring her lower back in training, has already qualified for the Olympics by making the final of the event.

Today will also see Cheong Jun Hoong and Ng Yan Yee compete in the women's 3m springboard preliminaries.

THRIVING CULTURE

Johor Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association celebrates its 70th anniversary with various performances including one by Thai opera troupe

THE Johor Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association recently celebrated its 70th anniversary at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Johor Baru.

The event saw performances by various Chinese groups including an opera troupe from Thailand.

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, known as "Culture Street" for its activities on Chinese culture, was packed with people from various races who turned up for the jubilee.

Association chairman Tan Liang Soon flew in the opera troupe from Thailand to entertain crowds with a performance of the Chinese classic, The Water Margin.

This is a story about a resistance movement led by over 100 heroes in 12th-century China during the Sung Dynasty.

The movement's aim was to overthrow a corrupt government headed by a prime minister named Kao Chai.

Association spokesman Heng Teo Luang said the Water Margin story is a favourite among Chinese opera enthusiasts in Thailand.

"Our chairman decided to bring in the troupe especially for youths in order to have them know more about their Chinese heritage," said Heng.

"I hope the subject of culture will be taught in schools from primary to secondary levels," said Liang Soon.

Among the opera cast members was Mohd Akhir Yusof, 36, from Kedah.

Akhir, who speaks fluent Thai, said the opera was usually staged during the Lunar New Year in Thailand.

Other members of the cast come from various backgrounds -- from farming to those working in the public and private sector.

Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association ex-chairman, Tan Kai Song, 70, was happy with the efforts to promote Chinese culture.

"I hope Chinese culture will continue to thrive among the Chinese here.

"I also hope the younger generation will value their culture and not let it disappear one day," said Kai Song.

The day after the celebration, the Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk Cultural committee chairman Tan Chai Puan and co-organiser The Photographic Society of Johor launched the "Photo-Kopi" contest at the street.

Photographers came from as far as Kluang to snap photos of objects and landscapes to tell a story with their pictures.

"We organised this photo contest to expose people to the old parts of Johor Baru which they may have overlooked," said Chai Puan.

Seventy photographers participated in the event.

Professional photographer Wincent Tan, 40, who works in a printing company in Johor Baru, said he joined the contest because it was an opportunity for him to showcase his talent in promoting the street.

"Today, I want to take photos of moving objects against interesting backgrounds," said Wincent.

Kng Li Yun, 29, a freelance photographer from the Kluang Photography Society, said she had taken part to snap photos of traditional coffeeshops in the area.

"This place is unique as it has so many interesting objects for photography," said the graphic designer.

Landscape photographer Musa Jaffar, 29, who specialises in mountain scenery, said he was interested in photography since he was nine years old.

"Photography is my bread and butter. I'm also a writer.

"I have travelled throughout Southeast Asia using public transport alone," he said.

He added that the contest is another opportunity for him to polish his photographic skills.

Sekinchan sails into Johor Baru

By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

RESTORAN Sekinchan Ikan Bakar officially opened its 17th and first outlet out of the Klang Valley at Danga Bay, opposite Tune Hotel in Jalan Skudai, Johor Baru.

The family restaurant chain specialises in grilled seafood and nasi lemak with organic ayam kampung (free-range chicken).

About 3,000 people attended the launch of the new outlet, where the guest-of-honour was State Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Committee chairman Datuk Aziz Kaprawi. Also present was state police chief Datuk Mokhtar Shariff.

The guests enjoyed Sekinchan's popular grilled ikan siakap, ikan keli, squid and nasi lemak served with sambal ikan bilis.

Among the specialties offered at the 400-people capacity restaurant at Danga Bay are fresh grilled seafood using a special gravy which recipe has been passed down from generation to generation.

The restaurant chain's managing director Datuk Jamal Md Yunus demonstrated his cooking skill by preparing the the nasi udang bakar for the guests.

Jamal said Johor Baru was chosen as the city for the chain's 17th outlet because it attracts a large crowd of seafood lovers.

"We see huge business potential in JB and we are in the midst of opening five more outlets in Johor. We will also continue with our efforts to open more outlets including some in Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Penang and Pahang," said Jamal, adding that more outlets would be opened overseas in Jakarta and Singapore by year end.

The first Sekinchan Ikan Bakar restaurant was opened at Centrum Setiawangsa, Kuala Lumpur, in May 7 last year. The 15 other outlets in the Klang Valley include ones in Kota Damansara, Prima Prima Sri Gombak, Puchong, Cheras, Taipan, Kajang, Balakong, Kepong, Segambut and Jalan Pahang.

Jamal, a Sekinchan native, said the grilled seafood recipe is distinctively Sekinchan, a coastal town in Selangor famed for its seafood and padi farms.

Other items on the menu are rendang kerang, paru goreng bercili, ubi kayu dengan kelapa parut, ayam kampung goreng berempah, sup ayam, sayur bakar and nasi goreng udang bakar.
