Ambiga fails to challenge refusal notice to enter Sarawak

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 10:51 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.O chairman Datuk S.Ambiga today failed to challenge a notice refusing her entry into Sarawak during the last state election.

High Court Judge Datuk Rohana Yusuf dismissed in chambers Ambiga's leave application for judicial review over the notice.

On May 23, Ambiga filed the application naming the director-general of the Malaysian Immigration Department, Immigration Director of Sarawak and Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as respondents.

Counsel Tommy Thomas and James Khong represented Ambiga and Senior Federal Counsel Datin Azizah Nawawi acted for the D-G of the Malaysian Immigration Department.

Azizah told the media that the judge refused to grant Ambiga's application on the basis that the Malaysian Immigration D-G had nothing to do with the refusal notice made by the Immigration Director of Sarawak, who acted at the direction of state authority, the Sarawak state secretary.

Azizah said the judge held that the Chief Minister was not a proper party to be named in the application and the cause of action should be filed in Sarawak as the Immigration Director of Sarawak resides there.

Ambiga said that she is considering appealing the ruling.

In the judicial review application, Ambiga sought to quash the notice of refusal of entry dated April 15 issued by the Sarawak Immigration director.

Ambiga also asked for an order from the High Court to compel the respondents to allow her to enter Sarawak. She sought damages and costs and further relief deemed fit by the court. Ambiga was barred from entering Sarawak during the 10-day election campaign when she arrived at Kuching Airport from Kuala Lumpur on April 15.

She said that she was informed at the at the Immigration Department Counter she was informed that she will not be issued with a pass to enter Sarawak. She left Sarawak on the next available flight for Kuala Lumpur. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Substantive swings produced two key by-election victories for the Barisan Nasional tonight.

BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes.

In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes.

BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly.

The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election.

In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes.

Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader.

Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990.

"The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight.

Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area.

The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight.

Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results.

Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election.

The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages.

Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008.

In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said.

"My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. His death on Oct 9 had led to the by-election.

UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:55 PM PST

By Hanif Miswan

SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of
them.

He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October.

The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers.

CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy.

Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent.

His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world.

He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10).

"It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21.

Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers".

The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant.

"CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."

"For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added.

The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English.

Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

Safiq Rahim(left) is keen to join Safee Sali in the Indonesian league.

SELANGOR manager Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin has confirmed that national team captain Safiq Rahim has made it "perfectly clear" that he wants to leave the team.

The midfielder has been linked with numerous top clubs in the Indonesia Super League after the national team won the AFF Cup for the first time last December. Hamidin said while Safiq wishes to leave, there is a glimmer of hope of keeping him with Selangor.

"Yes, Safiq wants to leave the club, he has made that perfectly clear. He spoke to me about the (Indonesian) offers a few days ago," said Hamidin yesterday.

"At the moment he is a Selangor player and will be treated like a Selangor player until he no longer is."

Indonesian news portals have over the past few weeks linked Safiq with Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta.

Hamidin stressed that Safiq will not be released during the season. "I've told him (Safiq) to speak to me about it after the Malaysia Cup. We want him to focus on the mission ahead," he said.

Winger Amirulhadi Zainal is also rumoured to be linked with Indonesian clubs but Hamidin said the national player has not spoken to him about it.

Meanwhile, Selangor may drop one of their three new signings on loan from Young Tigers for a goalkeeper for next month's Malaysia Cup.

The three are Young Tigers B captain D. Saarvindran and two Young Tigers A reserve players -- Haziq Zikri Elias and Muhd Nazri Ahmad.

Third choice keeper Mohd Fairul Shahrullai has been ruled out of the Malaysia Cup due to injury and to replace him Selangor are looking at signing USM's G. Jeevananthan, who is on trial with the club.

"According to Malaysia Cup rules, we can hire a maximum of three players. Besides that, teams must register at least three goalkeepers.

"We may have to drop one of our new signings for Jeevananthan. An official announcement will be made soon," Hamidin added.

National coach K. Rajagobal expects his charges to bounce back after their disappointing loss to Singapore in the World Cup Qualifiers.

National coach K. Rajagobal expects his charges to bounce back after their disappointing loss to Singapore in the World Cup Qualifiers.

THE national team must put aside the disappointment of failing to advance into the group stages of the Asian Zone World Cup Qualifiers and focus on retaining the AFF Cup and qualifying for the 2015 Asian Cup.

FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said he is aware of the enormous task at hand but national coach K. Rajagobal must find a way to motivate his squad after they were beaten 6-4 on aggregate by Singapore in the two-leg second round last week.

Tengku Abdullah said Rajagobal and his coaching staff must figure out what went wrong and address the problems. "There were some criticisms on the team's tactics, strategy and choice of players. It will be discussed at the FAM technical meeting soon.

"After the defeat, various parties have come forward to voice out their views and I have mine too," said Tengku Abdullah in Muadzam Shah, Rompin on Tuesday.

Tengku Abdullah said FAM will hold a post-mortem of both matches. Turning to Rajagobal's target of getting Malaysia to qualify for the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia, Tengku Abdullah said he was optimistic the coach will be able to put together a formidable side.

"It must be remembered that it's a young batch of players and Rajagobal will have to get them ready in the next two years," he said.

"The young players need to gain more experience on the international stage so the FAM will help arrange more matches to expose them to competitive matches."

The friendly match against Oman on Aug 9 in Muscat has been called off but they will play the Indonesian national side in September.

On the Olympic squad currently in Slovakia preparing for the Asian Olympic qualifiers, Tengku Abdullah said FAM does not want to put pressure on team.

The national Olympic team, who have been drawn in Group C with Japan, Syria and Bahrain, are expected to return from Slovakia on Aug 28 before travelling to South Korea for a friendly match.

They open their Olympic qualifying campaign against Japan on Sept 21 before meeting Syria (Nov 23) and Bahrain (Nov 27) at the National Stadium.

WINNING SHOTS

Recent photography competitions showcased the beauty of Johor Baru's common sights

Photographic Society of Johor secretary Kee Jwee Hiong said Johor Baru is full of picturesque scenes worth capturing on camera.

"Once I snapped some photos of Danga Bay and posted them online. Some viewers thought the pictures were taken at Sydney Harbour!" said Kee.

"I disagree with Malaysian photographers who believe places abroad are more attractive than those in their country.

"I believe one can turn anything into something beautiful by using one's imagination," said the photography lecturer.

Kee added the recent The Scenery of Admiral Cheng Ho's Expedition and Its Impact on Asia competition held at Sutera Mall was a platform for potential photographers to test their skills.

It was open to secondary school students and the public, with altogether 36 amateur photographers from all over Johor taking part in the open category.

The competition was held in conjunction with the closing of the month-long exhibition. Participants were required to take pictures of the exhibition.

The first and third prize winners went to photography enthusiasts Lim Li Kwong, 45, and his wife Tai Siew Then, 42, respectively.

Lim took home RM1,000 and a trophy, while Tai won RM500 and a trophy.

The second prize went to Photographic Society of Johor member Lek Kah Meng, 44, who won RM800 and a trophy. Lek, also an avid photographer, said he did not plan much before shooting his picture.

"I was suddenly inspired to base my photo on the 1Malaysia theme," he said.

Two of the panel of judges were from Johor Baru. The third was a Singaporean.

Photographic Society of Johor president Tang King Huat said the society encourages photographers to promote Johor and its rich history and culture to the world.

Another photography contest, Photo-Kopi@Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, was held at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee about the same time as the The Scenery of Admiral Cheng Ho's Expedition and Its Impact on Asia competition was being held.

The first prize went to photography enthusiast Tan Chong Meng, 53, from Johor Baru. He bagged RM600 and a certificate of merit, while the first runner-up was Lim Siew Tien, 27, from Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Baru. Lim took home RM400 with a certificate of merit.

Third prize winner Lim Xiao Tian, 22, from Simpang Renggam won RM300 and a certificate of merit.

THE Muar branch of the Immigration Department has been taken to task for the poor management of its ongoing exercise to register foreign workers.

Member of parliament for Bakri, Er Teck Hwa, said he visited the branch office for four days last week and found the situation not improved.

Er said he had proposed to the department to set up mobile units to register the foreign workers at their factories.

"When the Immigration officers allocated the queue numbers to the foreign workers, the latter should be informed when would be their turns.

"Currently, they wait for hours, some even sleeping on the verandah in front of the department or in a tent set up by the department," he said, when met in front of the department where about 500 foreign workers were waiting to be registered last Friday.

Er proposed that more counters for registration be set up.

"Currently, the department has three counters with registration machines."

He said many workers went to the Malacca Immigration Department instead as they could be registered on the same day.

Er said a queue display should be installed at the ground floor of the Muar Immigration branch to let foreign workers know how long they need to wait.

"At present, a Rela officer would announce the numbers through a loud-speaker."

Er said he had met a senior duty officer of the department, Abdul Latif Abu Bakar, who informed him that the department was registering an average of 1,000 workers daily.

Er also regretted that no policemen were on hand to ensure an orderly crowd and smooth registration.

A furniture factory owner from Jorak, Pagoh, Tay Soon Heng, 40, said he was at the department at 9am last Thursday but had to wait for a long time to be given the queue numbers for his 50 workers.

"They were finally registered after a five-hour wait."

State Immigration Department director Nasri Ishak said it would look into the problem and Er's suggestions were being considered.

He said the department had two mobile units that visit factories which have over 500 foreign workers.

"However, the units visit factories which have made prior arrangements with us.

"Employers, alternatively, can register their foreign workers at Immigration branches in Segamat, Batu Pahat or Kluang."
