Kalimullah takes the stand against Matthias

KUALA LUMPUR: The former deputy chairman of New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad, Datuk Seri Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan took the stand today in his defamation suit against lawyer Matthias Chang, the former political secretary to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Kalimullah, 53, testified that he filed the suit case against Chang in 2006 as the defendant had allegedly made damaging and baseless statements against him at a press conference which were published in the media.

Chang also filed a counter-claim suit.

Kalimullah, dressed in a light grey suit, told the court yesterday that the article based on Chang's press conference on June 13 was written and published in the Singapore Straits Times by its then Malaysian correspondent, Leslie Lau.

He also testified that according to the article, Chang had allegedly said that Kalimullah was corrupt, and that he, together with the then prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin, were the powers behind the throne.

"He also said that I am a coward and that I had used my position then as deputy chairman of NSTP to demonise Tun Mahathir.

"He said that I am a cobra doing work of our enemies and that I am a traitor and that he will spit on the face of those Malays who showed disrespect to Tun Mahathir," he said.

Kalimullah, during questioning by his lawyer Prakash Menon, also said that after the article was published, he kept getting calls and enquiries from friends and business associates wondering if there was any truth to the statements against him.

Asked if the article had adversely affected him, Kalimullah said: "It had caused embarrassment to me and my family and injured my reputation, character and my credibility was questioned."

When asked if he was a Abdullah loyalist, the witness responded: "He has been my friend for more than 20 years and I am loyal to my friends".

Kalimullah was also asked about alleged corrupt practices involving ECM Libra, for which he is the non-executive chairman.

Prakash: The defendant in his defence had alleged that you aided and abetted corrupt practice in the transaction between ECM Libra and abetted corrupt practice in the transaction between ECM Libra and the once Ministry of Finance-controlled Avenue Capital Resources Bhd. What do you have to say
to that?

Kalimullah: It is absolute nonsense and again a baseless allegation. The defendant obviously does not know the facts and the transaction. The transaction was sanctioned by the Ministry of Finance and all the necessary approvals were given before it was finalised. The government shares in the company were

sold to Tan Sri Azman Hashim after which he became the single largest shareholder of ECM Libra. I did not buy the Ministry of Finance-owned shares.

Kalimullah added that the respective regulatory bodies such as the Securities Commission and Bursa Malaysia gave the necessary approvals and that if there were corrupt practices, the approvals would not have been given.

Earlier, Lau, the first witness, who is now the executive editor of online news portal Malaysian Insider, told the court that in the Press conference in June 2006, Chang launched a "blustering and often rambling attack against Khairy and Kalimullah".

When asked to describe Chang's manner in the press conference, Lau said: " He was very dramatic, fiery, loud and shouting challenges, at mainly Khairy and Kalimullah.

"He even had five holy books in front of him including the Bible and the Quran, and he swore that he was speaking the truth for Dr Mahathir."

When questioned by Chang's lawyer Datuk R.K. Nathan, Lau, 40, said he could not make a judgement on whether Chang truly believed what he was saying at the press conference.

Nathan: Was Matthias passionate about what he said?
Lau: He was dramatic.
Nathan: Did he believe what he spoke?
Lau: I make no judgement on that.
Nathan: When he spoke loudly and swore on the holy books, it meant he believed his cause?
Lau: I do not know.

No age limit for 'winnable candidate', says Najib

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today the term 'winnable candidate' used in the 13th general election refers to candidates who can win irrespective of their age or the number of terms they had served as elected representatives.

Acknowledging that the coming general election would be tough, the Prime Minister said what was important was that the individual nominated would be the
best candidate for the Barisan Nasional (BN).

"Winnable candidates can refer to anyone, regardless whether he or she is
young or old, there is no age limit, there is no limit on the number of times he
or she has become an elected representative. The bottom line is that he or she

is a winnable candidate.

"It is immaterial if people say he or she is a recycled candidate. Of utmost

importance is that he/she is a winnable candidate because we want the BN to win
handsomely in the coming general election," he said when delivering his message
at the gathering with members of the Malaysian Council of Former Elected
Representatives (Mubarak) at Seri Perdana, here today.

Also present were Mubarak president Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Rahman and Mubarak

information chief who is also Bernama Chairman, Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman. - Bernama

Wet goods costlier in Kedah due to Thai floods

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 09:52 PM PST

ALOR SETAR: Prices of wet goods such as vegetables and fish rose considerably in Kedah last week as a result of the flood in Thailand.

Kedah Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) director, Mohd Sakri Saleh said wholesalers had raised their prices forcing retailers to pass on the increase to consumers.

"Prices of items such as red chilli and mustard (sawi) had risen sharply last Saturday on Hari Raya Aidiladha eve. Studies by KPDNKK found the increase started at the wholesaler level.

"About 20 per cent of the supply brought in from Thailand were spoilt because the vegetables have been stranded in the stores affected by flood in Thailand and wholesalers make up for their losses by increasing their prices," he told reporters after a meeting of the Association of Action on Prices of Goods with the Agricultural Department, Fisheries Development Authority, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, National Padi and Rice Authority, Veterinary Department and Malaysian Palm Oil Board here yesterday.

According to Mohd Sakri, Malaysia imported 70 per cent of its fresh vegetables from Thailand. However, prices of fish have not risen significantly as only 10 per cent of the import comes from Thailand.

He said prices of vegetables were expected to return to normal level in two weeks as Fama had given its assurance of importing chili and vegetables from China to meet the demand.

On actions against errant traders for raising prices, Mohd Sakri said KPDNKK felt the price hike had not been extreme even though they could face action under the Price Control and Anti-profiteering Act 2011. -- BERNAMA

More than 40 trapped in China coal mine

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 08:13 PM PST

BEIJING: An accident at a coal mine in China trapped more than 40 people underground on Thursday, state media and officials said, the latest in a string of incidents to hit the country's vast mining industry.

Rescuers were at the scene of the accident, which occurred early Thursday morning in the southwestern province of Yunnan, the official Xinhua news agency said.

A local government statement said the miners were trapped by a "gas explosion," but this could not be confirmed, and Xinhua said emergency workers referred only to a "gas leak".

The accident comes days after a blast in a coal mine in the central province of Henan trapped dozens of workers underground, most of whom were eventually pulled out after a 40-hour rescue operation, but 10 were killed.

Coal mine accidents are common in China, where work safety is often neglected by bosses seeking a quick profit.

Last year, 2,433 people died in coal mining accidents in the country, according to official statistics — a rate of more than six workers per day.

Campaigners suggest the true figure is likely to be far higher.

Last month, a gas explosion at a state-owned coal mine in the central province of Hunan left 29 miners dead.

Earlier in October, blasts at mines in the southwestern city of Chongqing and the northern province of Shaanxi killed 13 and 11 miners respectively.

China's rapid economic growth has caused demand for energy, including coal, to surge.

The Asian nation is the world's leading consumer of coal, relying on it for 70 percent of its growing energy needs.

Over the past eight years it has on average built one coal-fired power station a week. And with the arrival of winter, mines are operating at full capacity.

KUALA LUMPUR: Substantive swings produced two key by-election victories for the Barisan Nasional tonight.

BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes.

In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes.

BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly.

The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election.

In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes.

Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader.

Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990.

"The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight.

Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area.

The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight.

Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results.

Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election.

The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages.

Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008.

In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said.

"My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. His death on Oct 9 had led to the by-election.

UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:55 PM PST

2010/12/23
By Hanif Miswan

SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of
them.

He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October.

The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers.

CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy.

Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent.

His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world.

He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10).

"It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21.

Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers".

The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant.

"CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."

"For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added.

The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English.

Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

Sea Games / Football: Tinkering pays off for Kim Swee

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 04:17 PM PST

Malaysia’s Nazmi Faiz Mansor (left) is challenged by Thailand’s Chalermsak Kaewsoktae in their Group A match at Gelora Bung Karno yesterday.

Malaysia's Nazmi Faiz Mansor (left) is challenged by Thailand's Chalermsak Kaewsoktae in their Group A match at Gelora Bung Karno yesterday.

ONG Kim Swee's changes worked a treat as Malaysia breathed life back into their Sea Games football campaign with a 2-1 win over favourites Thailand at Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno yesterday.

Baddrol Bakhtiar and Izzaq Faris Ramlan scored either side of Natarid Thammroddodpon as Thailand played out the last 15 minutes a man short after one of the players went off injured with all three substitutions already made.

Kim Swee praised his side after a display which was much improved from the dour 0-0 Group A draw with Singapore on Monday.

"It was a tough game and Thailand who were playing their first game and faced the same problems we did on Monday when we were a bit unsettled.

"We played very well and created a lot of chances but we put ourselves under unnecessary pressure by not converting them. At the end of day, we showed good character to get the winning goal," said Kim Swee, whose side enjoy a three-day break before facing Cambodia on Sunday.

Kim Swee made four changes from the Singapore match as 17-year-old Nazmi Faiz Mansor belied his age to patrol the midfield with aplomb, making himself available at every opportunity and stifling Thailand's attack.

Nazmi, however, had his time cut short with an injury in the 53rd minute and was replaced by K. Gurusamy.

The defence, apart from the momentary lapse of concentration which led to the equaliser, were outstanding while wingers Fandi Othman and Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria linked up well with attackers Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim and Baddrol in creating a host of chances.

Thailand, who suffered a second consecutive defeat against Malaysia at the Sea Games, struggled to penetrate the Malaysian box though they did have their chances.

"In the first game we were a bit pressured but tried our hardest. I made several changes for this game and I'm proud of Nazmi, who for a player so young, played like a seasoned pro.

"This is a good sign for our development and I'm sure Nazmi will go on to a bright future," said Kim Swee.

Baddrol's 25th-minute goal was a gem after he neatly controlled the ball from Asraruddin Putra Omar's pass to place his shot beyond the reach of Thai goalkeeper Ukrit Wongweema.

Malaysia survived a scare eight minutes later when Khairul Fahmi Che Mat was beaten by Adisak Krisorn but the post came to his rescue.

The defending champions should have headed into the break 2-0 up but Irfan's flying header from an inch-perfect Fandi Othman cross went agonisingly wide of the far post.

As Thailand poured forward in the search for an equaliser in the second half, Malaysia found plenty of space to exploit and on one lightning counter-attack nearly scored through Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria, whose long-range strike came off the post in the 59th minute.

Syahrul Azwari was a constant thorn to the Thai defenders and in another counter, broke free in the 66th minute only to squander the chance when he elected to square the ball to Gurusamy, which was intercepted, when in a good position to score.

Thailand were reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute but stunned Malaysia with the equaliser a minute later.

Natarid fired home from the top of the box when the Malaysian defenders allowed him the space and time to fashion his shot.

But out of nothing, Malaysia went in front 2-1 when substitute Izzaq, who replaced Zaharul with 10 minutes left, trapped Baddrol's pass, turned and curled a beautiful effort beyond Ukrit.

IZZAQ Faris Ramlan stayed true to his word when he scored the winning goal against Thailand to hand Malaysia their first win in Group A of the Sea Games football event.

The forward vowed before the game to show his worth and although he did not start as coach Ong Kim Swee had indicated, he came on with 10 minutes remaining to score in the 85th minute in the 2-1 win.

Izzaq, 21, took his goal well, turning and curling a beautiful effort just inside the far post.

"I was hoping to start but I'm glad I got a chance to play. I not only wanted to score for the team but also hoped to impress whoever was watching this match

"Maybe I might get some international coverage and sign for a big team," said the match-winner, tongue-in-cheek.

Two teenagers also impressed as Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim, 18, and Nazmi Faiz Mansor, 17, produced outstanding performances in attack and midfield respectively.

Nazmi, however, picked up an injury early in the second half and is doubtful for the match against Cambodia on Sunday.

"I'll have to check on him and wait for the doctor's report. We got a few days break, so I hope he'll recover," said coach Ong Kim Swee.

Remembering the heroes of Bukit Kepong

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:52 AM PST

2011/11/08
By Rizalman Hammim
streets@nstp.com.my

The police recently held a gathering at the historic Bukit Kepong
police station to honour the fallen heroes

The attack on the Bukit Kepong police station in Muar by communist terrorists is one of the darkest days in the history of Malaysia.

The tragedy, which occurred on Feb 23, 1950, saw 180 communist terrorists, led by Mat Indera, attack the isolated police station at the break of dawn.

The police station was manned by only 15 Malay Regular and Marine Police Constables, and supported by three Special Constables and four local auxiliary police. Six police wives and seven children were lodged in the police quarters at the rear of the compound.

The attack lasted about five hours and resulted in the killing of 14 policemen, six auxiliary policemen, two wives and two children.

Some three decades later, the tragedy was the inspiration for the movie Peristiwa Bukit Kepong, directed by veteran actor-director Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin.

In remembrance of the tragedy, Royal Malaysian Police recently held a gathering at the site of the original Bukit Kepong police station.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and Johor police chief Datuk Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, as well as descendents of the victims and ex-policemen were present.

In his speech, Ismail said the sacrifice of the policemen and their families symbolised their perseverance and gallantry in defending an institution that stands for security and sovereignty of the country.

"This should not be ridiculed and belittled, as this is a fact of life for the police and the military in defending the country," said Ismail.

He voiced his disappointment with statements by some that tried to court controversy by saying the terrorists were heroes, and insulting the policemen defending the police station.

"I strongly reject these false statements that try to portray these terrorists and their cohorts as heroes, when the facts are that they killed the people who fought to free the country," said Ismail.

Ismail presented mementos to the descendents of police who perished in the attack, and letters of commendations to police for excellence in their duties.

A pantomime of the tragedy, performed by PDRM Museum, and a recitation of a poem by Deputy Superintendent Rose Baini Kasim were staged.

The pantomime touched some of those in attendance, who wiped away tears as they watched.

Jamilah Abu Bakar's mother Fatimah Jaafar and brother Hassan were killed in the attack. Her father PC37 Abu Bakar Daud was severely injured.

She said she was grateful that the sacrifices made by those who died in the attack, including her mother and brother, were finally recognised and honoured.

"The public today have started to appreciate the sacrifices that they made, and we are thankful, especially to the PDRM, for organising this event," said Jamilah, 65.

Although her father was saddened by the loss of a wife and son, she said, his spirit and desire to uphold peace in the country was never extinguished.

"He continued to serve in the police force until he died in 1979," said Jamilah.

To Ahmad Abdul Jamil, 63, the fighting spirit showed by his father Sergeant Abdul Jamil Mohd Shah, who was the commanding officer of the police station, is a source of pride for his family.

"I am proud to have a father who was willing to sacrifice his life to defend the country.

"It is a painful event to remember. I I was only 6 at the time and my mother had just given birth to my youngest brother.

"It is a challenge to grow up without a father but I was never sad because my father is a national hero," said Ahmad.

FOR the past eight years, the Allgear shop in Taman Tasek, Johor Baru, has been specialising in gear for campers and paintball hobbyists.

The shop has a myriad of items catering to these hobbies, but it is also an ideal place to shop for accessories such as bags, antique belt buckles, collar pins, caps, and shoes for big bike enthusiasts.

Shop owner Raymond Yap, 50, said he also supplies gear such as glow-in-the-dark vests, jackets and other accessories for uniformed personnel.

"I started out running a factory making raincoats and canvas bags, but later on I decided to diversify my business by setting up Allgear in 2003.

"The shop's clientele is 80 per cent men, as the items range from tactical outfits and accessories for paintball to big bike shoes and camping gear," said Yap.

The most expensive items are rifle casings, which can cost up to RM2,000 each.

Since the items are related to weaponry and the armed forces, Yap insists that buyers show proper identification when purchasing certain items.

Buyers of accessories for uniformed personnel, such as vests for policemen and soldiers, are required to show their respective identification documents.

Allgear is a haven for those who are interested in paintball, as there are imported and locally-made uniforms, helmets and shoes dedicated to the sport.

Much of the paintball outfits are designed based on American or British military uniforms.

aintball enthusiasts can find locally made helmets from RM50, or Taiwan-made ones at RM500 and less.

Paintball vests are sold between RM315 and RM375.

American brand Fox's big bike shoes are sold for about RM1,000, while other brands cost less.

Camping fans can buy army and multi-purpose knives from RM35 to RM135. Other interesting items sold are collar pins shaped like pistols starting from RM10, and lighters of various shapes from RM20.

Allgear is open daily (except on Sundays) from 9am to 6pm. On Saturdays, it is closed at 3pm. It is at 5 Jalan Glacier, Taman Tasek, Johor Baru. For details, call 07-234 8122, or log on to www.allgear.com.my.
