Fernandes bids for West Ham

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 08:16 PM PDT

"For all you West Ham fans an offer has gone to the present owners of West Ham. Let's see if they accept."

LONDON: Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes announced yes terday he had bid for West Ham following their recent relegation from the English Premier League.

"For all you West Ham fans an offer has gone to the present owners of West Ham. Let's see if they accept," Fernandes, the owner of the AirAsia airline and Formula One's Team Lotus, said on his Twitter page on Wednesday.

Fernandes made his announcement on the same day as the London club's current owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, unveiled Sam Allardyce as the new Hammers boss after they sacked Avram Grant barely an hour following relegation from the top tier of English football.

A lifelong fan of the east London club, Fernandes first expressed an interest in, at the very least, taking a stake in West Ham in November.

It was reported he had met with then-West Ham chairman Andrew Bernhardt in Kuala Lumpur but had been unable to agree a deal.

Talks though continued until, in January, former Birm ingham City owners Sullivan and Gold completed their buy- out and took charge at Upton Park.

At the time, Fernandes expressed relief his proposal to buy the club had fallen through.

However, he signalled his renewed interest in West Ham after a Twitter follower on Wednesday reminded him of his comment that not buying the Hammers was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

"Yes, I did (say that)," he replied. "Because I was full on with Lotus.
That has stabilised now."

And with West Ham now out of the lucrative Premier League, Fernandes may feel he can buty the club at a greatly reduced price.

However, he told his Twitter followers: "Won't be any more statements on West Ham. Keeping fans informed.

"Now we have to just respect the process. If something happens it happens.
If it goes quiet it goes quiet." - AFP

'Birth control pills easily purchased in pharmacies'

'Birth control pills easily purchased in pharmacies'

GEORGE TOWN: Oral contraceptive pills, some of which are flavoured, are now easily available at pharmacies.

A survey conducted by the Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP), in Penang, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur, recently showed that the drugs controlled by the Poisons Act 1952 were sold over the counter without the registration of the buyer's details.

Its president S.M. Mohamed Idris said 14 of the 15 pharmacies surveyed in Penang, sold the pills openly while at the other pharmacy, the buyer was asked to register herself but her details were not verified.

He told reporters yesterday that of the 14 pharmacies, only five asked some questions, but ultimately sold the pills.

Idris added that a male buyer was also able to get them from some pharmacies.

"This is a worrying trend. It is frightening that the health authorities are unaware of this situation and it shows their inept enforcement.

"Many women may be suffering in silence from adverse health effects due to ignorance of the dangers that these drugs pose."

The adverse effects of these pills include depression, breast lumps, heavy vaginal bleeding between periods, hypertension, blood clots in the legs, chest pain, signs of liver damage and signs of stroke, among others.

"CAP calls on the government to take stern action against pharmacies found to be selling them openly."

KUALA LUMPUR: Substantive swings produced two key by-election victories for the Barisan Nasional tonight.

BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes.

In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes.

BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly.

The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election.

In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes.

Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader.

Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990.

"The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight.

Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area.

The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight.

Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results.

Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election.

The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages.

Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008.

In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said.

"My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. His death on Oct 9 had led to the by-election.

UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course

single
SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of
them.

He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October.

The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers.

CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy.

Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent.

His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world.

He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10).

"It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21.

Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers".

The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant.

"CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."

"For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added.

The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English.

Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

EIGHT players, who were part of the AFF Cup-winning squad, may not be considered for Malaysia's World Cup qualifying campaign.

National coach K. Rajagobal has excluded them from his side's international friendly against Hong Kong tomorrow as they are with the Olympic side preparing for their second round qualifying campaign.

The eight are goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, defenders Mohd Fadhli Mohd Shas, Faizal Mohd, Mahalli Jasuli, Muslim Ahmad, midfielder K. Gurusamy and strikers Faizal Abu Bakar and Izzaq Faris Ramlan,

Rajagobal wants to keep his options open before naming a squad of 26 players for the next stage of centralised training, which is expected to begin on June 15.

"If I opt for those in the Olympic team, they will only report to me after their second round qualifying second leg match against Lebanon on June 23.

"I've not decided on anything. As for now I am looking at more players," said K. Rajagobal on Tuesday.

Malaysia will play Taiwan in a first round first leg World Cup qualifying match in Kuala Lumpur on June 29. The return match is in Taipei on July 3.

"I am testing new players to see whether they can adapt to my game strategy against Hong Kong. I want to be prepared in case of injuries to those in the Olympic team.

"The Olympic players will fit well into my plans even if they report late. It is not a problem as they have been with the national senior team for quite awhile," said Rajagobal.

When asked about the Taiwan team, Rajagobal said: "I analysed their game during the recent Challenge Cup in Kuala Lumpur, where they played three matches. They are disciplined and aggressive in their approach. We cannot take them lightly."

Sabah goalkeeper Syed Adney Syed Hussein returns to the senior team upon his first international call-up after he was dropped from the 2009 Laos Sea Games squad while Negri Sembilan defender Aidil Zafuan Radzak will also play his first international 'A' match since last year.

Among those hoping to earn their first international caps tomorrow are Shahrom Abdul Kalam, Helmi Remeli, Mohamad Hisyamudin, Azidan Sarudin and Shahrizal Saad.

Aidil, Azidan and Shahrizal were also in the squad in the national team's last friendly, which was against S-League side Etoile FC in March.

The squad -- Goalkeepers: Sharbinee Allawee, Syed Adney Syed Hussein;

Defenders: Azmi Muslim, Asraruddin Putra Omar, Nasriq Baharom, Aidil Zafuan Radzak, Shahrom Abdul Kalam, Helmi Remeli, Mohamad Hisyamudin; Midfielders: Ashaari Samsudin, S. Kunanlan, Amar Rohidan, Azidan Sarudin, Safiq Rahim, Ismail Faruqi, Baddrol Bakhtiar, Amirulhadi Zainal, S. Chanturu; Forwards: Norsharul Idlan Talaha, Shahrizal Saad, Safee Sali, Abdul Hadi Yahya.

England FA blasted

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 08:28 AM PDT

ZURICH: England's Football Association was the subject of stinging criticism here yesterday after suffering a crushing defeat in their bid to halt the re-election of Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

England FA chairman David Bernstein had taken the floor at the 61st Fifa congress to table a motion calling for the postponement of the presidential election which took place yesterday.

"A lot of people have warned me I shouldn't be making this speech but Fifa is a democratic organisation," Bernstein said.

"We are faced with an unsatisfactory situation. We are subject to universal criticism from governments, sponsors, media and the wider world.

"With this background the election has turned into one-horse race ... a coronation without an opponent provides a flawed mandate."

But England's attempts to take a stand fell flat, with voters dismissing the motion by 172 votes to 17.

Adding insult to injury, Fifa's senior vice-president Julio Grondona from Argentina then unleashed a blistering attack on England.

"We always have attacks from England which are mostly lies with the support of journalism which is more busy lying than telling the truth. This upsets and disturbs the Fifa family," Grondona said.

"To present such a project as David Bernstein presented is like shooting a penalty because it cannot be always from the same place that the insults and problems come from." -- AFP

Rokiah Bakar the eagle trapper

EAGLES are not usually kept as pets but Rokiah Bakar, 55, has mastered a way to capture the birds and keep them at home.

The Kampung Air Papan Laut resident in Mersing has been luring the birds of prey, particularly sea eagles, by using specially-made traps.

The traps are normally used for jungle fowl but Rokiah has been setting them up around Tanjung Resang and Air Papan for the past 10 years.

She said the birds would fly lower when seeing such traps.

However, she said the eagles are only kept for a while and are later set free.

Rokiah's skill in catching eagle is well known among the residents, and has even caught the attention of the late Sultan Iskandar.

It was former Mersing district officer Datuk Dr Ibrahim Endan who had informed the late sultan about Rokiah's skill.

Being an animal lover, Sultan Iskandar had asked Rokiah to capture eagles that were often seen around the islands off Mersing.

"Eagles have wings that could span as long as 2 metres. Back then I was probably the first person to have captured an eagle to be given to the late sultan."

Rokiah said her son would sometimes help her by climbing trees to gather the eaglets.

"Capturing and rearing eagles without a licence is wrong.

"But I had obtained temporary permission from the district Wildlife and National Parks Department to do so.

"But now I have not captured any eagles as I have not seen them flying around the area."

A DAMAGED 10-metre stretch of embankment along Sungai Bentayan in Muar, has impeded the river flow.

Part of the embankment had collapsed into the river last month, and now loose pieces of rock and concrete are blocking part of the river.

The situation became worse following a three-hour downpour early last Sunday.

The first sign of damage occurred a month ago when part of the 10-metre stretch collapsed into the river following another heavy downpour.

A recent check showed that the concrete sidewalk and metal fencing have been damaged, and this poses a danger to traders and residents at the nearby row of shoplots.

A trader who wished to be known as Jim said if the problem was not solved quickly, a much worse fate could befall the traders.

"This cannot go on because it poses a safety hazard to traders and members of the public. I urge the authorities to take a look at the damage and take swift action to rectify it."

It was reported that the collapsed embankment near a row of shops was worrying traders at Jalan Maharani.
