Olympic misery for China, North Korea

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 11:26 PM PDT

SINGAPORE: China crashed out of London 2012 Olympics qualifying in controversial circumstances while Asian champions Japan survived a scare to make it safely through to the next stage.

Australia and South Korea also booked their places in the final qualifying round alongside resurgent Malaysia, while United Arab Emirates dashed North Korean hopes with a narrow 2-1 aggregate win.

But the biggest casualty of the night was China, who had a player sent off and a goal disallowed in Muscat before humble Oman scored three goals in extra time to run out 4-1 aggregate winners.

China, fighting to overturn a shock 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Shanghai, lost midfielder Zhang Linpeng to injury after just four minutes but managed to level the tie through Wu Xi deep into the second half.

But Cao Yunding was red-carded for a late tackle just three minutes later, before the linesman's intervention ruled out a dramatic stoppage-time winner when Wu's close-range strike was flagged offside.

During extra time in baking conditions, Hussain Al Hadhri scored twice and Yaqoob Abdul Karim added another to extend China's miserable international football record.

"The weather was hot and the players are not used to this type of weather, and in extra time a lot of the players were suffering and we could not organise ourselves properly," said assistant coach Li Bing.

"It is shame we have lost the chance to play in the next phase, but we have learnt a lot from this match."

Saki Oriki eased Japanese jitters in Kuwait when he netted first at Mohammed Al Hamad Stadium, extending their advantage to 4-1. But the nerves returned when Kuwait scored twice in the second half to run the Asian giants close.

A 1-1 draw in Jordan was enough for South Korea after they convincingly won the first leg in Seoul. But Australia had no concerns as they slotted four unanswered goals past Yemen to run up a 7-0 aggregate score.

Iraq overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to advance 2-1 at the expense of arch-rivals Iran, while Southeast Asian champions Malaysia beat Lebanon to go through.

Among other results, Saudi Arabia finished 6-1 winners against Vietnam, Qatar ousted India and Uzbekistan booted out Hong Kong.

This week's 12 winning teams will be split into three groups of four for final qualifying, with the three top sides all gaining automatic entry to the London Olympics.

The second-placed teams go into a three-way round robin, with the winner playing off against a side from the African confederation for another ticket to the Games.

Men's football is played as an under-23 tournament at the Olympics, although the rules allow for three over-age players. - AFP

Japan radiation drone makes emergency landing

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:47 PM PDT

TOKYO: A small aerial drone measuring radiation over Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant went out of control Friday and made an emergency landing on a reactor building roof, the operator said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the T-Hawk, weighing nearly eight kilograms (17 pounds), caused no obvious damage to the facility.

"It went out of control and made an emergency landing on the roof of the reactor number two building," a TEPCO spokesman said, adding that "we see no fire or smoke at the moment".

The March 11 magnitude-9.0 quake and tsunami knocked out reactor cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, causing fuel meltdowns, explosions and leaks of radiation into the air, soil and sea. - AFP

Houses, condos costing RM220,000 and below to be built in Sg Besi.

PETALING JAYA: A new publicprivate housing initiative featuring homes priced RM220,000 and below will be launched next month.

Some of these houses and condominiums will be built on a portion of the Sungai Besi airport site —a prime spot—after the Royal MalaysianAir Force air base shifts to Sendayan, Negri Sembilan, PrimeMinister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.

Under this Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (Prima) project, deservingMalaysians will be able to own quality homes at below market prices.

They can also take advantage of the "My First Home Scheme" launched inMarch. This scheme allows Malaysians earning less than RM3,000 per month to obtain 100 per cent financing from selected financial institutions for houses costing between RM100,000 and RM220,000with a repayment period of 30 years.

Najib said a special unit under the PrimeMinister's Department would decide who were eligible to buy these Prima homes.

"We willmanage that because we want to show that the distribution is handled fairly and in a transparentmanner so that people who deserve homes get houses," he said during a radio interview over Chinese-language One FM radio station at Sri Pentas. Owners would benefit from price appreciation as Prima homes will be sold at below the market price.

"At least on paper, you can make a profit vis-a-vis the market price. It is good, especially for the young people," Najib said.

He said a few projects were in the pipeline and that several big developers, including Sime Darby, SP Setia and Putrajaya Corporation, had been approached to join in the project.

The government, he said, would provide the land for developers to construct quality housing for the people.

"The idea is that they (developers) don't make money, nor do I want them to lose. They are there to provide quality, affordable housing for the rakyat. This is not going to be a commercial project. The government will provide the land for them.

"So we want them to give quality affordable housing and they have to present to us their business model.

We 'll do the business analysis and make sure they will not make any money or lose any either. This is a social business model, quite different from a business model." With Najib at the radio station was his son, Norashman, who spoke fluent Mandarin with presenters Jack and Jane and described his father in Mandarin as "not very strict, but has high expectations of him and would like him to get a good wife".

"I have the greatest expectations of what I hope he can accomplish in life.

In that regard, I do hope he gets a good wife. I can choose one for him," Najib replied.

When asked who Norashman's favourite artiste was, Najib said he did not know because Norashman was a talented deejay who spun all kinds of music in his room.

"He's got a special skill and he is always in his room. My room is quite far from him and he does it at odd hours so it doesn't disturb me." During father-son moments, he said they watched football, golf and television series like Air Crash Investigation and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI).

On how often he used Facebook and Twitter, Najib said it all depended on how much time he had.

"It also depends on my mood. I'm only human and sometimes you're in the mood to tweet and sometimes yo u 're not. So, sometimes, I don't do it even if I have the time. Last night, I was tweeting in between the things I had to do and the people who came to visit because I was very excited about the Kedai Rakyat." When asked if he knew about the hit game Angry Birds, Najib said he had heard of it but had not tried it out yet.

"I usually play Hangman because it challenges me. I would like to try (Angry Birds) one day. It is popular among the youths. Although I'm not part of that generation, I would like to think I'm still young."

I can take on Aziz anytime: Dr Zul

GUA MUSANG: Pas' candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed remained a good sport over jokes that his stocky frame might tire him fast during the campaign trail.

He said he was used to work long hours when he was a doctor at government hospitals in the past.

"There were times when I had to work over 36 hours on a stretch, then. I think I can keep up with the hectic campaign schedule now," he said.

Dr Zulkefli, 44, will be up against Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, in the Galas by-election on Nov 4.

Some segments of political watchers have been heard making comparisons between the two candidates of their physiques.

Such light banter follows an absence of substantive issues to debate since campaigning started on Nov 26.

Dr Zulkefli said he was feeling alright even when there were many places to visit over the past three days.

To keep fit, he said he took a lot of water and sufficient rest.

When a reporter asked about his weight, Dr Zulkefli said: "I do not know. Let us keep it as a secret."

In jest, he said he could take on Aziz in a running or tug-of-war competition.

Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures.
The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership.

A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself.

I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ".

Frankly how many can do that ?

This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example.

Traits of great leader who make small people feel great.

Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders.

It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count.

We should not trumpet about it.

High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah.

Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation.

Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible.

The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number.

In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ?

Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind.

My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise.

And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful.

The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered.

First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?.

Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ?

The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members.

However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants.

Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency, the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident.

Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different.

As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say, with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters.

From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess.

To me the annoucement seems to be made in conjunction with the coming BN convention in Kuala Lumpur in an effort to influence its outcomes

China’s Lin Dan lost 12-21, 18-21 to Japan’s Sho Sasaki yesterday.

China's Lin Dan lost 12-21, 18-21 to Japan's Sho Sasaki yesterday.

IT was business as usual for Lee Chong Wei who checked into the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open but Olympic champion Lin Dan suffered a shock second round exit in Jakarta yesterday.

Chong Wei faced no problems in registering a 21-17, 21-12 win over Hong Kong's Wong Wing Ki in 29 minutes. The World No 1 will next meet either Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam or Wang Zhengming of China, both who were involved in a late second round match last night.

Lin Dan, who had conceded a walkover at the Singapore Open final to compatriot Chen Jin due to stomach ailment, was nowhere near his best against Japanese Sho Sasaki, losing 12-21, 18-21 in 39 minutes.

Sasaki's success means there will be no Chong Wei-Lin Dan showdown in the final. It appears now that the Malaysian's biggest rival will be local favourite Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia who advanced to the last eight by beating Bao Chunlai of China 21-19, 25-23 in the second round.

"No excuses. Sasaki deserves to win. I did not deliberately lose. I will have to see a doctor and check what's wrong with my stomach," said Lin Dan.

"And I need to take a good rest too before I decide on the next course of action."

Men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were up against Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato of Japan in a late second round match last night.

Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui had to work hard for a 17-21, 21-18, 21-13 win over Nicole Grether-Chairmaine Reid of Canada to reach the quarter-finals.

"The Canadians were fighting so hard and we lost our rhythm too. It will only get tougher from now on but at least we are showing progress," said Pei Tty.

They will next meet Indonesia's Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati, who upset second seeds Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin of Taiwan 21-19, 23-21, in the last eight.

Vita-Nadya defeated Pei Tty-Eei Hui in the Singapore Open last week and the Malaysians need make a better effort to overcome their rivals today.

Selected 2nd Rd results -- Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt Wong Wing Ki (HK) 21-17, 21-12; Chen Long (Chn) bt Kenichi Tago (Jpn) 21-11, 21-14; Taufik Hidayat (Ina) bt Bao Chunlai (Chn) 21-19, 25-23; Peter Gade Christensen (Den) bt Shon Wan Ho (Kor) 21-15, 21-19; Du Pengyu (Chn) bt Kazushi Yamada (Jpn) 21-14, 21-13; Sho Sasaki (Jpn) bt Lin Dan (Chn) 21-12, 21-18.

Men's Doubles: Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen (Den) bt Anthony Clark-Chris Langridge (Eng) 30-28, 21-15; Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan (Ina) bt Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno (Jpn) 21-17, 23-21; Angga Pratama-Rian Agung Saputra (Ina) bt Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung (Kor) 21-17, 21-17; Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano (Ina) bt Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu (Tai) 21-19, 16-21, 21-12.

Nadal, Murray roar into third round

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 08:29 AM PDT

WORLD No 1 Rafael Nadal and British hope Andy Murray stayed on course for a Wimbledon showdown on Wednesday as Venus Williams came from a set down to reach the third round of the women's draw.

Spanish reigning champion Nadal swept into the last 32 with a brisk demolition of American journeyman Ryan Sweeting, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 under a closed Centre Court roof as rain disrupted play early on.

Nadal, aiming for his third Wimbledon title in four years, will face Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, who beat him here in 2005, in the third round.

"I played well. I had the match under control at 2-1, 40-0 in the third set but then made a few mistakes," said Nadal, who added he preferred to play without the STG80 million roof covering the action.

"That's something strange. They told me they were going to open the roof. But at the last minute, they told me they predicted a shower. Never comes.

"It's a new experience for me, a good experience. But the tournament is outdoor, not indoor and I prefer to play outdoors. I prefer to play with no roof, that's for sure."

Nadal is on course to meet Murray in the semi-finals, with the Scottish fourth seed aiming to become the first British man to win at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray was stretched to four sets in his first round match on Monday but faced no such problems against Germany's Tobias Kamke on Court Number One, wrapping up a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 win with a minimum of fuss.

Murray will take on Ivan Ljubicic for a place in the last 16 after the Croatian veteran made short work of Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

"I served well but the rest of my game needs work. It was quite tricky and windy," Murray said.

Murray was joined in the last 32 later Wednesday by American eighth seed Andy Roddick who had too much class for Romania's Victor Hanescu en route to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win.

Roddick, a three-time losing finalist, will face Spain's Feliciano Lopez in the third round today.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, the men's draw went mostly to form, with seeded players Mardy Fish, Tomas Berdych, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils all reaching the third round.

The highlight of the women's tournament saw five-time champion Venus Williams pushed all the way by 40-year-old Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm in a pulsating three-hour battle.

Venus, 31, finally prevailed 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 8-6 to advance to a third round meeting with Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who beat Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-0, today.

Venus, seeded 23, is feeling her way back into tennis after a five-month lay-off following an injury sustained at the Australian Open in January, an enforced absence that has left her hungrier than ever.

"I think more than anything I've learned I'm very competitive. I've been extremely positive regardless of how my opponent's playing. Just keeping fighting," Venus said.

Kimiko, who reached the semi-finals here in 1996 before later taking a 12-year sabbatical from the sport, expressed satisfaction that she had pushed her more illustrious opponent so close.

"Of course I'm very, very disappointed. But most important, I played my tennis and showed I can fight with Venus. She's a five-time champion here. So it was a very, very good match for me." -- AFP

PHOTOGRAPHERS' PICK

2011/06/22
By Shenton Thomas De Silva

The Photographic Society of Johor recently installed its new committee members at a Balinese themed resort in Senai

THE Photographic Society of Johor recently installed its new committee members for this year until 2013 in a ceremony at the Rina Balinese Resort in Senai, Johor.

Its newly installed president who is also the society's founder, Tang King Huat, 63, said five new members were installed last month.

Also present was guest of honour Datuk Mok Chek Hau, who presented a personal donation of RM3,000 to the society.

Tang presented a token of appreciation to Mok.

Tang said to date the society, founded in 1964, has about 700 members.

Its members, most of whom are hobbyists, come from all walks of life such as lawyers, doctors, businessmen, clerks and housewives.

"During my time we developed the black and white photos in the dark room, but today it is developed instantly using digital technology.

"It's amazing how far we have come in technology," he said.

The veteran photographer said photographers should use their skills to promote the country's beautiful parks and scenery, as well as its cultural heritage.

"I believe a picture paints a thousand words and with enough knowledge and skill, a photographer can bring out the essence of an object for the public to appreciate its beauty," he said.

Among amateurs in the society are also professionals who had participated and won medals in national and international photography contests.

A professional photographer from the society, Lek Kah Meng, 45, said the installation ceremony was held in a grand manner for the first time.

"The location was lovely with natural surroundings and the food was good," said Lek who bagged an award in the Korea International Photography Contest in 2004.

He added the resort was a haven for photographers as it had lush greenery, and beautiful birds and butterflies.

"It is a place to also relax and de-stress," he said.

His fellow member, Chiu Siew Thong, 43, from Senai, also won a bronze award last year in the 20th Daejeonilbo International Great Photo Contest.

About 50 of the society's members participated in a photography contest held that day using professional female models.

The results for the contest will be announced within the next few weeks.
