Anwar deserves an Oscar, says Muhyiddin

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 05:45 PM PDT

BETONG: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should get an Oscar award.

He said the opposition leader had made the injury he received in Saturday's illegal street demonstration worse than it seemed.

He said A n wa r 's injuries could have been selfinflicted to give him an excuse to discredit the government and the police.

"Anwar should be given an Oscar for making what is not true look like the truth. We expected him to twist the facts to suit his goals," Muhyiddin said after attending the national-level Gawai Dayak open house at Rumah Wilson Begat Anak Bakir, in Penom, Ulu Paku, here.

Anwar was said to have suffered a bruise on his head and a cut leg as a result of police firing tear gas at protesters near where he was.

He said the chaos that broke out caused him to fall.

"I saw him on YouTube looking frail in a hospital bed. An hour later, I was told he was up and about, at the home of the protester who had died, paying his last respects and looking fine and healthy." Muhyiddin said he had expected Anwar and the opposition to capitalise on the incident as "this was not the first time (it had happened)".

"There were no extreme police actions in the area, nor was he attacked by the police or targeted by the police." He said police were investigating the circumstances that led to Anwar getting injured.

"Did he fall because of police action? Was it selfinflicted or did he walk into a glass wall?" He said policewould make a statement on Anwar's injury and the death of protester Baharudin Ahmad.

Muhyiddin said Anwar, the opposition and rally organisers Bersih had distorted the facts on what had happened during the rally. "We expected it. We knew from the beginning that it would happen." He praised the police for showing "great restraint" in their handling of the rally.

He said the death of the demonstrator was not because of police brutality, as claimed by the opposition.

He said the opposition distorted the death to gain sympathy by portraying the government and the police as brutal.

Muhyiddin said street demonstrations were not part of Malaysian culture and would never be as the majority of people were against them.

"It is not something we do. So what happened shows that they (the protesters) do not have respect for the law." He accused Bersih of showing disrespect by lying to the king when they had promised that theywould not take to the streets.

The haze did not deter these children from having fun at the KLCC playground in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The current hazy conditions in the Klang Valley and Negri Sembilan will not be going away anytime soon. No rain has been forecast today for the central region, with rain expected only in east Johor and south Perak.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) said the haze that had so far engulfed the three states and parts of Johor, was caused by raging fires in Sumatra and parts of Borneo.

A large portion of Seremban was engulfed yesterday morning, reducing visibility to between 200 and 300 metres in certain areas, including stretches of the Kuala Lumpur- Seremban Expressway. Although the air quality had not reached hazardous levels in the town, the State Health Department advised those with respiratory illnesses to remain indoors.

In Senai, flight operations at Sultan Ismail International Airport were disrupted early yesterday due to low visibility caused by the haze.

MMD central forecast office's principal assistant director, Amir Zudi, said apart from east Johor and south Perak, there would be no rainfall in the rest of Peninsular Malaysia today.

He said this meant there would be no immediate respite from the haze.

"The haze effects will linger for sometime since it is not going to rain today. It was also dry yesterday," he said.

The Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index revealed the air quality in 37 out of 51 areas in the country were classified as "moder - at e " when measured at 7am yesterday.

There are five levels of classifications — good, moderate, unhealthy, very unhealthy and hazardous.

A ParticulateMatter (PM-10) reading of 51 to 100 is classified as "moderate ".

This was confirmed by directorgeneral of health Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman who said the quality was down but had not reached hazardous levels yet. He added that the ministry was currently liaising with the DOE for further updates about the haze situation but as for now, the air quality was still at a normal level.

The last time the country was hit with severe hazy conditions was in 2005.

Port Klang and Kuala Selangor were declared to be in a state of emergency when PM-10 readings went as high as 500.

The 2005 haze, caused by massive forest fires from neighbouring countries, was the worst that had hit Malaysia since 1998, where services across the country were crippled.

Workplaces and schools were forced to shut down due to risk of contracting respiratory illnesses.

Bid to call Syed Hamid Albar over CD seizure dismissed

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:55 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today dismissed a Christian woman's application to cross-examine the then home minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar over the seizure of compact discs (CDs) containing Christian religious teachings which used the word, "Allah".

Justice Datuk Rohana Yusuf ruled that Syed Hamid's affidavit pertaining to the case was sufficient to be used in the judicial review proceedings to explain why the CDs were seized.

Senior Federal Counsel Arik Sanusi Yeop Johari and Azizan Md Arshad, representing Syed Hamid and the government, told reporters that in the affidavit, Syed Hamid had stated that the reasons for the seizure were to protect national security and public order.

Arik Sanusi said the court also agreed with Syed Hamid's affidavit on a 1986 cabinet directive which prohibited non-Muslims from using certain words such as the word, "Allah".

Justice Rohana made the ruling in chambers after allowing a preliminary objection raised by Syed Hamid and the government on grounds that the application was filed out of time by 15 months after leave was given by the court.

The court also rejected Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill's application to cross-examine a customs officer, Suzanah Muin, who seized the CDs. -- BERNAMA

Sweden, US advance to semis

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:09 AM PDT

DRESDEN: Sweden and the United States booked the final two tickets to the Women's World Cup semi-finals on Sunday as the Brazil of Fifa's five-time World Player of the Year Marta were eliminated.

The United States needed a tense 5-3 penalty shootout to get past the South Americans in Dresden after the match ended 2-2 after extra-time, and will next meet France for a place in the final.

Earlier Sweden, the only unbeaten team left in the tournament, outclassed Australia 3-1 in Augsburg and next play Japan, who eliminated two-time winners Germany on Saturday.

"Everyone is really sad which is normal after a defeat like that where you lose in the last minute," said Brazil coach Kleiton Lima.

"The girls threw everything into trying to win, we have tried to console them, but it will take time to get over this."

US coach Pia Sundhage added: "I come from Sweden, but this core American value of bringing the best out of one another is infectious. I'm very proud and happy to be coach of the US."

US defender Alex Krieger hit the winning penalty after her goalkeeper Hope Solo had earlier saved from Brazil's Daiane to give her side the advantage in the shoot-out.

On the final whistle, American striker Abby Wambach had kept her side in the quarter-final with a dramatic header in the 122nd minute to level the scores after Brazil star Marta had scored in the 92nd minute.

The game went into extra-time with the scores 1-1 as an own-goal by defender Daiane after just two minutes was cancelled out by playmaker Marta's penalty on 68 minutes which she converted at the second attempt.

The US had been reduced to 10 players when defender Rachel Buehler was sent off just moments before.

Sweden, who beat the United States 2-1 to finish top of Group C, dominated their clash against an inexperienced Australian side.

Therese Sjogran and Lisa Dahlkvist put the Swedes ahead within 16 minutes before Ellyse Perry marked her first World Cup match by getting one back five minutes before the break.

Lotta Schelin finished off the contest after 52 minutes after poor Australian defending allowed the Swedish striker to round goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri and coolly slot into the empty goal.

Swedish coach Thomas Dennerby said his side would need to improve against Japan, a team they have played twice but not beaten this year.

"We don't have very good memories of playing against them (Japan), but we hope to do better this time," he said." -- AFP

Falcao fires Colombia into last eight

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT

SANTA FE: Colombia marched into the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Sunday after a 2-0 win over Bolivia wrapped up top spot in Group A.

With the best two third-placed finishers at the event also reaching the quarters Colombia's win spelt joy for Chile, Peru and Venezuela as they all have four points and cannot now be caught by the side which will take third spot in Group A.

That team will be either hosts Argentina or Costa Rica.

One of that pair will take runners-up spot and the side left in third cannot equal the tally of Chile, Peru or Venezuela, allowing that trio to join Colombia in the next phase.

Porto hitman Radamel Falcao put the contest to bed in the first half hour with a crisp opener on 14 minutes and a penalty after 26 minutes as the Colombians hit the ground running.

Colombian coach Hernan Dario Gomez said his side had stuck to their game plan and been rewarded.

"We put them under early pressure, went out for the early goal, and we got it," Gomez noted.

Colombia's Wigan star Hugo Rodallega was also pleased.

"We are extremely satisfied with how the group phase has gone. We came to Argentina with a goal (to qualify from the group) and we have done just that."

The cafeteros had already seen off Costa Rica and had the better of a draw with hosts Argentina.

They completed an impressive first phase showing against a Bolivian side who started well enough in holding the Argentinians before flunking their Costa Rican test.

After Falcao's rip-roaring opening, Adrian Ramos, Freddy Guarin and Dayro Moreno all went close for the Colombians as they threatened to overwhelm their rivals before they took their foot off the accelerator after the break.

After Falcao sent his spotkick hard and low past Bolivian keeper Carlos Arias, who had saved a penalty in the previous game gainst the Costa Ricans, the Colombians celebrated by holding aloft a shirt belonging to David Ospina, their usual first choice keeper.

Ospina, who plays for French side Nice, missed the event after fracturing his nose in a training ground collision with Wigan's Rodallega, forcing the Colombians to promote Nelson Ramos of Millonarios. -- AFP

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 151.44 points (1.20 per cent) to 12,505.76. The broader SandP 500 shed 24.31 points (1.81 per cent) to stand at 1,319.49, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 57.19 points (2.00 per cent) to 2,802.62. That followed steep falls on European markets, as political leaders and bankers in the Greek debt talks remained unable to agree on how to avert an outright default by Athens, and as worries had also spread to the heavily indebted Italy. Friday's announcement that the US economy had produced almost no new jobs in June, and that the unemployment rate rose to 9.2 per cent, continued to weigh on investor sentiment as well. All 30 Dow blue chips were in the red, and big banks took heavy hits: Bank of America lost 3.3 per cent, JPMorgan Chase fell 3.2 per cent and Citigroup lost 5.3 per cent. Ford slid 4.1 per cent on worries of the slow economy's impact on auto sales. The bulk of the woes for the bulls comes amid the uncertainty regarding the US debt ceiling, exacerbated by fears of a debt crisis contagion in the eurozone with Italy taking the brunt of the blows," said analysts at Charles Schwab. Global media baron Rupert Murdoch's News Corp lost another 7.6 per cent as the scandal over the now-closed News of the World tabloid continued to snowball. The shares were off 14.3 per cent over the last five days, and Monday's fall came after there were new doubts about the company's proposed full takeover of lucrative British broadcaster BSkyB. The European crisis sent US bond prices higher -- despite the continued debt-and-deficit talks impasse in Washington, now just three weeks before the country could be forced to into default. -- AFP Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price.

Cat owners showed off their pets in a show in Perling Mall recently

CATS stole the limelight at a beauty pageant for them at Perling Mall Johor Baru, where they "strutted on the runaway" to claim titles such as Most Handsome Male Cat, Most Adorable Female Cat, Most Lyrical Eyes, Most Unique Voice and Most Fluffy Hair.

The mall co-organised the "Kitty Cat Show" with the Malaysia Cat Club, with the event attracting over 50 pet owners who came with their precious companions.

Club president Khalid Rashid said the club formed in 1971 has over 4,000 members nationwide.

"A show like this was last held in Johor about a decade ago. We now want to organise similar shows in all states," said Khalid, who said most of the clubs were held in Kuala Lumpur.

Most cats shows are required to have an international affiliation and deemed a pedigree event, but the Kitty Cat Show was purely a fun competition.

The were 11 sub-categories under the three main categories of Short Hair, Long Hair and Kitten. The winners of each category walked away with cat food, biscuits and grooming sets.

Louis, owned by Norazalan Azahari, won everyone's heart as it purred its way to win the Most Vocal Cat and Most Active Cat titles.

Tomok, Norazalan's other cat, walked away with the Most Fluffy Hair title.

The winner of the Most Handsome Male Cat under the Long Hair category was Monky, owned by Zainuddin Sahar, while the Most Adorable Female title under the same category went to Amelia Cortesa, owned by Mohd Effindy Saniran.

The Most Lyrical Eyes title went to Evalina Mendosa, owned by Hanafi Mohd Yusof, while Kazuya was chosen as the Most Unique Pattern, whose owner is Yusoff Abdul Rahman.

Owner Samsuria Abdullah had a great day at the event as his three cats Suria Cinta, Suria Kasanova and Suria Rimba walked away with titles under the Short Hair and Kitten categories.

Suria Cinta won both the Most Shining Hair and the Most Active Cat titles under the Short Hair category, while Suria Kasanova won the Most Unique Pattern title and Suria Rimba, the Most Playful Kitten in the Kitten Category.

An adoption drive was also held by the Johor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which brought along abandoned stray cats that had to be neutered to be adopted.

Those who adopted the cats or kittens were given free cat food and tips on how to care for the pets.

The event also had experts sharing tips on grooming and caring of cats.

Among the topics shared with owners were the importance of neutering their cats.

Johor SPCA vice-chairman Joseph Chia said responsible cat owners will neuter or spay their cats. This is to ensure that cats will not be overpopulated and end up in shelters or worst, abandoned.

He also said spaying can reduce hormone-driven behaviours among pets.

The show was a huge success with many hoping that it would become an annual event.

Perling Mall advertising and promotion officer Sharifah Fairuz Hashim said the show was organised after taking into consideration patrons who did not like cats. "We chose a corner, a place where the show's activities will not disturb our mall patrons, yet provide a suitable place for cats owners and their pets," she said.

She also said the mall will consider making the Kitty Cat Show an annual event. The club aims to create awareness on protecting and caring for the welfare of cats, and animals in general.

Souq BBU finds itself a ready market

Souq BBU finds itself a ready market

2011/07/10
By Syed Abdullah Syed Mohamed

SINCE it began operations in May this year, the Souq BBU mini market in Jalan Padi Ria 13, Bandar Baru Uda (BBU), has seen brisk business.

Customers, mainly residents of the neighbourhood, make a beeline as early as 7am to purchase groceries, especially perishable items like fresh vegetables, fish and meat.

Fully owned by Koperasi Masjid Jamek BBU Bhd (BBU Mosque Co-operative Bhd), Souq -- or "shop" in Arabic -- has become the preferred place for shoppers especially housewives and senior mosque congregators due to its strategic location directly opposite the mosque.

Souq offers a wide range of dairy products, bread, fruits, beverages, dry goods, canned, condiments, spices, frozen, paper products, and personal care items.

Parking space is ample around the mini mart and for those who work at or visit the mosque regularly, it's just a short walk across to purchase their favourite items.

"We arranged the items to satisfy our clients. The dry good items are placed at the front section of our shop, while fish, vegetable and meat are located at the rear," said Souq supervisor, Mohd Rumali Sahar.

Rumali said the idea to set up the mini market was proposed by a few members of the co-operative early this year.

The previous owner of the two-unit double-storey shophouse had decided to vacate the premise as he wanted to retire from his business.

A special meeting was held by the mosque co-operative's working committee and all members agreed on the takeover.

Rumali, a member of the committee who has ample experience in business, was nominated to steer the proposed mini market's management. At present, the co-operative has a membership of almost 500.

Now, besides running his own business, Rumali also takes care of the retail kiosk at the mosque, and the nursery and fruits stall opposite Mydin supermarket in BBU.

Rumali said the supply of fresh fish, meat and vegetables are acquired through reliable agencies like FAMA, Sedili (Kota Tinggi) and the Farmers' Association.

The management also plans to distribute these items in bulk to interested retailers, stall owners and restaurants around BBU.

For members of the BBU mosque co-operative, the working committee will propose a point system so that items at the mart can be redeemed according to the total number of points accumulated.

Meanwhile, the management has constructed five more partitions in the mini mart to be rented out to interested parties.

Souq BBU opens daily from 7am until 10.30pm. For more information, call 07-2375400.
