Football: Scots frustrated by late penalty controversy

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 06:56 PM PDT

GLASGOW - Scotland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012 were left hanging by a thread after Michal Kadlec scored a controversial last minute penalty to give the Czech Republic a 2-2 draw at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Craig Levein's side, hunting a place in the qualification play-offs, needed a victory to close the gap on the Czechs in the race to finish second behind runaway group leaders Spain.

They were in control when Darren Fletcher set up Kenny Miller to open the scoring a minute before the break.

But the Czechs laid siege to the Scotland goal in the second-half and got the goal their pressure deserved when Jaroslav Pasil headed home a 78th equaliser.

A Jan Rajnoch mistake allowed Miller to cross for Fletcher to put Scotland ahead again in the 83rd minute.

However, there was heartbreak for the Scots when Dutch referee Kevin Blom pointed to the spot in the 90th minute after substitute Jan Rezek went down even though replays showed Danny Wilson made no contact with his challenge.

Kadlec expertly converted the resulting penalty which leaves Scotland, who have played a game less, five points behind the Czechs in second place. - AFP

Australia to drop PNG immigration deal: Minister

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 06:51 PM PDT

SYDNEY - Australia is to abandon plans for Papua New Guinea and Nauru to process asylum seekers after a court ruling last week scuttled plans to send 800 boatpeople to Malaysia, a minister said Sunday.

"The solicitor-general... can have no confidence that an arrangement with PNG or Nauru is possible under existing law as a result of this judgment," the AAP news agency quoted Immigration Minister Chris Bowen as saying.

Australia and Papua New Guinea, its developing northern neighbour, last month signed a memorandum of understanding under which PNG would establish an assessment centre on its Manus Island to process boat people.

Rights groups said the idea was a return to the "Pacific Solution" of former leader John Howard under which asylum seekers arriving by boat were sent to Manus and the tiny Pacific state of Nauru as a deterrence to others.

Under that policy, since dismantled, asylum seekers were processed offshore, but often ended up being resettled in Australia.

Sunday's announcement came four days after Australia's highest court blocked government plans to send 800 boat people to Malaysia — a key plank of its regional approach to halting the flow of asylum seekers.

It was a huge embarrassment for Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her fragile Labor government, which had heralded the policy as a sure-fire strategy to deal with the politically divisive issue.

Gillard said the High Court ruling was a missed opportunity "to enhance our region's response to the evil of people-smuggling". - AFP

Let's not blame anyone over journalist's killing: Najib

Let's not blame anyone over journalist's killing: Najib

PETALING JAYA -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today urged the people not to point fingers at anyone over the recent killing of a Malaysian journalist in Somalia.

"Let's not play this blame game. The most important thing for us is to take stock of what has happened," he told a media conference at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang near here.

Najib spoke to both local and international media, including the BBC and CNN, after joining the family of slain BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor for the arrival of the journalist's remains from Mogadishu.

Noramfaizul, 39, was killed on Friday after he was shot while travelling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with other Malaysian media personnel covering the humanitarian aid mission to Somalia by the Putera 1Malaysia Club.

"There's a limit to what you can prepare for any eventuality. Insyallah (God willing), we'll try our level best in the future to prevent such a thing from happening again. No one can guarantee anything. But if you're not prepared to take the risk, then stay home," said Najib. -- Bernama

Body of slain BernamaTV cameraman brought back today

SUBANG -- The body of BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor who was killed in Somalia on Friday was brought back here at about 10 am today.

Noramfaizul's body was flown in to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base here by an RMAF C-130 aircraft, and was received by family members who had been waiting since 7 am.

An air of melancholy hung over the airbase as the coffin, draped in the Malaysian flag, was brought out of the aircraft which had also flown in the remaining 54 members of the humanitarian aid mission of the Putera 1Malaysia Club headed by Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

Noramfaizul, 39, was killed on Friday after he was shot while travelling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with other media personnel who covered the distribution of aid to victims of Somalia's famine.

Among the family members at Subang were Noramfaizul's parents, Mohd Nor Mat Yassin, 66, and Naemah Abd Majid, 63.

Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor; Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife, Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman; Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Cameramen and photographers from a multitude of media organisations enveloped the rear of the aircraft as the coffin was brought out and taken to the RMAF mosque. - Bernama

PM's Kluang visit: A commentary

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 03:59 AM PDT

2011/03/27
By Shahrum Sayuthi
news@nst.com.my

I WAS quietly amused when my hometown friend Fiona reacted with much enthusiasm when I told her that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was making a stopover at her alma mater, the Chong Hwa High School, during his visit to Kluang on Saturday.

She is after all a DAP supporter and had not made it a secret to me who she voted for when she had cast her vote for the first time in the 2008 general election.

"Oh my God! That's so great of him!" was what she text messaged me in return before proceeding to relate how when as a student she had, along with others, lined the street leading to her school when then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went there in 1987.

"That was the last time a prime minister visited our school. I remember it was a very hot day and we were sweating, but we were all so happy that a prime minister visited our school," she added.

If Fiona was at the school on Saturday, she may have thought she had been transported back in time to that day.

The over 2,000 students, in their all white uniforms, were equally enthusiastic in welcoming Najib.

The highlight of Najib's visit to the school was when he mentioned in his speech the government's "landmark decision" to allow Unified Examinations Certificate holders with three credits including passes in Bahasa Malaysia and English, to take part in the special intake for the Chinese language degree course to become Mandarin teachers.

The students cheered as he made the announcement.

"We (the government) are committed to being fair to everyone and will continue to strive for this. Dreams will not be realised until we are at peace with one another," Najib had said.

My colleague Chuah Bee Kim interviewed some of the students and teachers on how they felt about Najib's visit.

Seow Yu Sheng, 15, a Form Three student said it was a memorable day as it was the first time he had seen the prime minister in person.

"I am happy to see him. Furthermore, he was here today to launch our school's green programme which my teachers have always promoted among us," he said.
Another Form Three student, Dana Lim, 15, echoed Seow's sentiment but lamented that Najib's hour-long visit was such a brief one.

"My classmates and I nonetheless feel very honoured to have the prime minister at our school," Lim said.

Liong Kok Kiong, 32, a geography teacher at the school for the past six years said the announcement made by Najib regarding UEC holders was very uplifting as it was a step towards the success of the 1Malaysia policy.

"I also hope that Najib's visit will encourage more English language teachers to join our school as we need more of them here," he said.

Later in the night, Najib attended a "dinner with the people" function at down town Kluang which was attended by more than 10,000 people.

Such was the overwhelming response given by the crowd when Najib arrived at the function that Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had to pause several times to compose himself while delivering the welcoming speech.

Expressing his pleasure, Najib in his speech, suggested that judging by the crowd's response at the function and during his walk-about in several parts in Kluang earlier in the day, Barisan Nasional may probably recapture the lost ground it suffered during the coalition's disastrous outing in the 2008 general election.

He told the crowd how an old Chinese lady gave him a 51-year-old Jalur Gemilang during the walk-about.

"I was so touched because she told me that it was a gift for my effort in initiating 1Malaysia," he said to thunderous applause from the crowd.

The prime minister probably had in mind that Kluang, with its huge Chinese community, was the DAP's first stronghold in Johor before it was overwhelmed there by BN in the late 1970s.

However, in 2008, DAP captured the Mengkibol state seat there when its Ng Lam Hua defeated Gan Ping Shou of MCA by a majority of 1,281 votes. Ng had got 13,538 votes while Gan received 12,257.

When Najib announced an allocation of RM105 million for the construction of a dam in Kahang to ensure no recurrence of a water supply problem which hit Kluang during last year's Chinese New Year, I immediately sent a text message to Fiona.

After all, she was the one who had pushed for me to initiate extensive news coverage about the problem in the first place.

Gamis students released after statements taken

GUA MUSANG: Police today recorded statements from four university students who were detained for several hours yesterday for allegedly distributing political pamphlets in the Galas state constituency.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the students, aged between 18 - 25 years old were taken to the district police station and released soon after.

"We are investigating if the students are from Gua Musang or outsiders," he said after a briefing at the police operations centre here.

He said they would also work with the Election Commission and the students' universities during their investigations.

The students are from a group, calling themselves Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam SeMalaysia (Gamis) and were allegedly distributing brochures urging the locals to exercise their democratic right to vote.

A spokesman yesterday said the group represented students from various universities and had come to Galas to observe the campaign process and also explain to the people certain national issues, including the 2011 budget and how it effects them.

Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the detention of the students should not be politicised as they were merely detained for not possessing a valid permit to distribute the pamphlets.

"The students were not aligned to any political party and were merely there to urge the people to come out and vote. They are acting on their own and nothing to do with their respective universities.

"However, I would like to advise these students to go home and concentrate on their studies instead," he said when contacted.

On another issue, Ismail also said the police had to date received four reports on minor incidents involving the parties contesting the by-election here.

"I urge all parties to adhere to the laws and prevent any untoward incidents," he added.

Kohli: India will silence Hussain

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 07:31 PM PDT

DURHAM: India batsman Virat Kohli insists the world champions will prove Nasser Hussain wrong after the former England captain labelled some of the tourists as "donkeys".

Hussain made the controversial remark about India's fielding while commentating during Wednesday's one-off Twenty20 international, which England won by six wickets.

The comment has prompted criticism in India with the Board of Control for Cricket vice president Rajiv Shukla describing it as "totally uncalled for".

India have endured a miserable tour to England, losing their position as the number one test team after being drubbed 4-0 by Andrew Strauss's team, but Kohli believes Hussian's criticism was wide of the mark.

He points to India's successful World Cup campaign earlier this year as proof that the tourists have nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to fielding in hectic one-day games.

"Everyone has their opinion. We don't have to get angry about it and try really desperately to change it," said Kohli ahead of yesterday's opening one-day clash against England in Durham.

"I don't really pay attention to all of this. We just have to do what we have been doing for a while. We haven't become world champions just like that.

"If we fielded like the remarks that have been said then we wouldn't have been world champions.

"I don't think these remarks should be making a difference to us. It's up to us to perform at our level best -- like we have been for a while in the limited-overs format.

Harris stars in Australia's victory

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 07:31 PM PDT

GALLE: Fast bowler Ryan Harris claimed five wickets as Australia beat a valiant Sri Lanka by 125 runs in the First Test yesterday to take the lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka, who resumed the fourth day at 120-5 chasing an improbable victory target of 379, were dismissed for 253 in their second innings midway through the afternoon session.

Mahela Jayawardene hit a classy 105 and Angelo Mathews made 93 to hold off Australia, but the rest of the batting caved in.

It was Michael Clarke's first test win as Australian captain, having lost to England by an innings in Sydney in January when he stood in for the injured Ricky Ponting.

The emphatic win in Galle helped Ponting set a new benchmark of becoming the first cricketer to have been part of 100 test victories.

The 36-year-old, the team's frontline batsman, was already test cricket's most successful captain with 48 wins when he stepped down in April to make way for Clarke.

Jayawardene and Mathews, who came together on Friday afternoon with Sri Lanka tottering on 68-5, put on 142 for the sixth wicket in a courageous fightback.

The pair batted through the entire morning session, defying the Australian bowlers on the dusty, crumbling wicket that made strokeplay difficult.

The classy Jayawardene, 34, Sri Lanka's highest run-getter in test cricket, notched up his 29th century with the help of 15 boundaries and a six.

Mathews, 10 years Jayawardene's junior, showed why he is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the modern game even though he narrowly missed his maiden test century.

The partnership made some amends for the home team's poor batting earlier in the match, when Sri Lanka were shot out for 105 in the first innings and reduced to 68-5 in the second.

The stand was broken in the seventh over with the second new ball when Jayawardene inside-edged a delivery from Harris on to his stumps after lunch.

Mitchell Johnson had Suraj Randiv fending a catch to second slip, while Mathews was ninth out, bowled by Shane Watson attempting a big hit.

Scores: Australia 273 (M. Hussey 95; S. Lakmal 3-55, R. Herath 3-54) and 210 (M. Clarke 60; Herath 5-79) beat Sri Lanka 105 (N. Lyon 5-34; S. Watson 3-11) and 253 (M. Jayawardene 105, A. Mathews 95; R. Harris 5-62) -- AFP
