PM celebrates Deepavali with Makkal Osai staff

KUALA LUMPUR -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, for the first time, celebrated Deepavali with the staff of Tamil daily, Makkal Osai today.

The event was also held to celebrate the 67th birthday of the daily's owner, Datuk S. Subramaniam, who is also former MIC deputy president.

Najib spent 30 minutes mingling with about 1,000 people who thronged the open house.

The prime minister went straight to the open house, which was held at the National Land Finance Cooperative Society Building in Jalan Templer, upon his arrival from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang.

He then proceeded to attend Deepavali celebration hosted by MIC at Batu Caves Temple, before heading to Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras for another open house hosted by Hindu Sangam. -- BERNAMA

Najib in Australia for CHOGM

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 08:31 PM PDT

By Nuraina Samad

PERTH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who arrives here this evening for the four-day Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, has a tight schedule ahead of him tomorrow, ahead of the meeting.

He has scheduled bilateral meetings with several leaders, beginning in the morning.

Malaysian High Commission to Australia Datuk Salman Ahmad told a media briefing that first on his programme is a scheduled bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the morning.

This is the third time Australia is hosting CHOGM.

Gillard, quoted by the Australian Press, has indicated that she expected to raise the issue of the failed refugee swap deal between Australia and Malaysia, with Najib.

She said this was to keep him 'updated on the government's position.

She had told local reporters that Australia's policy was that her government would be able to implement the arrangement with Malaysia.

The Gillard government's plan to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia in exchange for 4,000 processed refugees was scuttled by the High Court in August.

The opposition blocked the government's plans to change migration laws for off-shore processing.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott opposes the programme because Malaysia is not a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Treatment of Refugees and instead proposes offshore processing on the Pacific Island of Nauru.

The Greens oppose offshore processing in any form.

Najib, later, will hold bilateral talks with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka will host the next CHOGM in 2013.

In the afternoon, he will meet with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and later in the evening, with Commonwealth secretary-general Kamalesh Sharma.

On Friday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron, South African President Jacob Zuma and Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of CHOGM.

Tomorrow, he will attend the Commonwealth Business Forum where he will deliver a keynote address, "Building Infrastructure for the 21st Century" at the Burswood Entertainment Complex here.

He will also chair a roundtable meeting with selected business leaders to discuss opportunities and prospects of trade and investment in Malaysia on the same day.

While at the complex, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to witness the signing of an MoU In Standardisation between Malaysia and Uganda.

Salman also said the Prime Minister, who is accompanied here by his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, will join some 300 Malaysians in an evening of Aussie-style barbecue in Burswood park here before leaving Perth.

Najib joins 52 world leaders at this biennial meeting which begins Friday at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in the city's central business district.

With the Prime Minister in Perth are Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mustapa Mohamed.

The theme this year is "Building National Resilience, Building Global Resilience".

This year, 53 countries are represented. Fiji, will not be attending as it was suspended from membership in September 2009 pending restoration of a democratically elected government.

Prisons Dept denies no post-mortem on Mogana's body

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 09:53 PM PDT

The Prisons Department today denied that the body of R. Mogana Sundram, who was found hanged in prison three days ago, was not sent for a post-mortem before it was released to his family.

A statement issued by the department's Secretariat and Public Relations Unit, said that Mogana's body was released to his family members after the post-mortem on Oct 23.

A coroner inquest found no other injury on Mogana's body, except the ligature marks on the neck, it added.

The department said that all necessary procedures were taken before Moganas's body was released to his family members.
"Hence, the claim that a post-mortem was not conducted on Mogana's body is not true," it said. -- Bernama

MANAGING PRINCIPALS

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 10:30 AM PDT

By Syed Umar Ariff

School administrators have been urged to develop a holistic approach to excel in their jobs

THE challenges faced by teachers due to social globalisation should be addressed consistently, according to speakers at a recently held education conference.

Principals, especially, are responsible for boosting their schools' performance, either in academics or discipline of students, and even teachers.

Malaysian School Principals Education Management Council (MSPEMC) chairman Ayob Jantan said a holistic approach was essential in ensuring a balanced performance among students in, for example, sports and studies. MSPEMC had just celebrated its 50th anniversary, according to Ayob.

At the conference in Johor Baru, Ayob said it was imperative for administrators to develop strong self-values to improve leadership skills as stated in the 10th Malaysia Plan.

The three-day conference was held to determine the best path in dealing with current education-related issues and to improve administrative skills among school principals.

"Principals, who are both teachers and administrators, must have a realistic approach when managing schools. This was what we want to find out here at the conference," said Ayob.

More than 100 principals statewide attended the programme, which was launched by Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

Puad described managing organisations such as schools as an arduous task. He said a great manager must consciously act with wisdom in every decision made.

"This job demands commitment. Without it, one can never realise the objectives set in the first place. The Education Ministry places great faith in principals in achieving the numerous agendas in education," he said.

Puad noted among the measures taken by such managers was assisting the members of his or her organisation to know themselves better and to know them personally, since every individual is unique.

"Other than that, the manager must also be able to be the catalyst in producing unique talents among organisation members."

The Four Catalyst Key Roles, said Puad, were the selection of a person, followed by setting their expectations, motivation and personal development.

He said one could build a great team by taking into consideration its members' potential talent as per their duties.

"In comparison, a normal manager will assign a person to a task based on his experience, intellect and diligence.

"A great manager, however, would select someone based on his talent, in which the former would be able to define the outcome of the assignment," said Puad.

He noted that as principals, they should have the creativity to ensure their teams remain professional, effective and competitive, as it was important to deliver the utmost results in executing objectives.

"Everyone should play a role in developing our students for the betterment of our future. It is also important to nurture analytical and intellectual cultures among our schoolchildren," said Puad.

At the event, several booths sold clothing, alternative healing items and electronics.

Have a heart, pledge your organs

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:36 AM PDT

2011/10/24
by Syed Umar Ariff

JOHOR has recorded the highest number of cadaveric organ donors since early this year -- five out of 35 nationwide.

Some may think the number is insignificant, but for now, we have to be grateful of what we have.

It is not easy to get replacement lungs for transplant, for example, let alone finding people to voluntarily sign up as organ donors.

And between 2005 and last year, the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (SAH) for example, received 20 kidneys, five livers, three hearts and three lungs from dead donors.

However, hurdles in the form of narrow-minded religious interpretations, often became the greatest stumbling block among those who want to do their part for the living after death.

A number of discussions, research and open dialogues, which took into consideration cultural points of view were carried out to allay fears among the skeptics.

And fortunately, the result favours those who are in a dire need of organs, waiting for donors.

Nevertheless, it is the public who has yet to carry the torch to do its part.

SAH director Dr Rooshaimi Merican A. Rahim Merican said the problem now lies with pledgers.

Some people are still reluctant to pledge as they are not aware that organ donation is permitted by most religions.

At an organ donation awareness event held recently at the hospital, Dr Rooshaimi said the number of pledgers, up till September, have increased significantly, which is 33,644. It is second after Selangor which has 37,730 donors.

The figure, for example, corresponds with the number of patients suffering terminal kidney failure which stands at 23,420 nationwide.

We can never have too many donors. Such a programme to promote awareness is indeed laudable and should be carried out intensively to put to rest any uncertainty pertaining to organ donation.

I believe many of us do not have the heart to witness the suffering of others while we have the power or means to make a change.

Remember the nation's first double heart transplant girl Tee Hui Yee, from Batu Pahat, who made headlines between 2007 and 2008?

Her story was heart-wrenching with pictures of her carrying a mechanical heart implanted outside her abdomen while lugging a 9kg portable battery in a suitcase to power the device.

Tee, now a 17-year-old, was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure when she was merely two years old.

She was on medication and had to wait for a suitable heart donor.

The wait, however, was risky because there were not many donors around.

Fortunately, her life has been blessed, with a new heart from a cadaveric donor.

She is now back in school and living her life as happy as any teenager would be.

She is among the few who were lucky enough to survive such an ordeal. One can only sympathise, but she was the one who had to endure a battery-powered mechanical heart for many months of her life.

Life is never easy. When journeying alone, its road is winding and sometimes dangerous. One could easily take a wrong turn and lose one's way without the help.

But as human beings, we should discard our misconceptions when it comes to something as important as life and death.

And we can prove ourselves to be useful, even after we have departed to the afterlife.

Thailand declares holidays to cope with flood crisis

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 11:41 PM PDT

BANGKOK: Thailand declared a three-day holiday today in Bangkok and other flood-affected areas as high tides are forecast to flow up the city's main river and worsen floods creeping into the city.

Schools, businesses and government offices will shut on Thursday and Friday, and the following Monday, creating a five-day break in the capital and 20 other provinces.

"The cabinet today approved the declaration of October 27 through to 31 as holidays," Pracha Promnog, head of the Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC), said after ministers met to discuss the escalating crisis in Bangkok.

The central bank said it was still being decided whether to shut down financial markets as well.

The announcement came after Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra made a televised address warning residents along the Chao Phraya river to be on "full alert" after it reached record highs of of 2.30 metres on Monday.

"If the situation continues in these circumstances, the water level this weekend will hit 2.60 metres, while our average flood embankment is 2.50 metres high," he said.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's cabinet met north of the city centre at Don Mueang airport, which is doubling up as a shelter and a headquarters for the relief operation, but is already surrounded by water-logged roads.

"We are concerned about evacuees because there is a problem with travelling here," Yingluck said ahead of the meeting.

"We will move them to safe areas," she said, but added that for now FROC's operations would remain at the airport.

The floodwaters are creeping further into the city of 12 million people after three months of heavy rains that have plagued other parts of the country, killing more than 360 people and damaging millions of homes and livelihoods. -- AFP
