Single mothers need to be independent: Azizah

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:41 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Single mothers need to remove the general perception that they are weak and too dependent on aid, said Sabah Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

She said as women now facing the challenge of going through life on their own without a husband, they must adopt a positive attitude and have the desire for self-advancement.

"They need to learn lessons from their past bitter experience and rise to uplift themselves educationally, economically and socially," she said at the opening of a dialogue on empowering single mothers, here, today.

The text of her speech was read out by Community Development and Consumer Affairs Assistant Minister Datuk Herbert Timbun Lagadan.

Azizah hoped single mothers would rid themselves of low self-esteem, fear and lack of self-confidence if they wished to succeed in life, especially in looking after their family's welfare.

She said with the various development programmes specially for women, there was no reason for them not to succeed. -- BERNAMA

Lynas plans next phase of Kuantan plant

MELBOURNE: Rare earths supplier, Lynas Corporation Ltd's Malaysian subsidiary, will spend up to US$210 million on the second phase of construction of the planned refinery plant in Kuantan, Pahang.

The Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported that Lynas Malaysia had signed a letter of award with Thai engineering company, Toyo-Thai Corporation, for the second phase of work on the Lynas advanced materials plant at the Gebeng Industrial Estate in Kuantan.

The letter of award is for a fixed lump-sum price of between US$180 million and US$210 million.

Subject to the receipt of approvals, construction is scheduled for completion in the last three months of 2012.

Completion of the first phase of the advanced materials plant is expected by the end of the year, AAP said.

Earlier this month Lynas shares plunged because of media reports the plant could be delayed by one to two years.

Lynas denied the reports.

The company mines 15 metallic elements which are used in electronics, computers and many green electrical products.

The plant in Malaysia is being built to process ore concentrate from Lynas's rare earths deposit at Mount Weld in Western Australia. -- BERNAMA

We're sensitive to price increases

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are the most price-sensitive shoppers in Southeast Asia, said a survey that also puts them tops in Asia-Pacific when it comes to looking for sales.

As inflation shows no signs of slowing down, Malaysians are becoming more conscious of price increases.

Nielsen Malaysia associate director of retail measurement services Teoh Choon Keat said: "In an inflationary environment, shoppers are exercising more caution when it comes to spending on household items." The Nielsen Shopper Trends Survey shows that Malaysian shoppers are the second most prolific buyers in Asia-Pacific after those in Vietnam.

"The survey found that 65 per cent of Malaysian shoppers actively search for promotions while shopping ," Teoh said, adding that sales continued to be the key driver of store traffic.

He was sharing the survey results with the media yesterday.

Earlier, Teoh said mini-markets were becoming more popular in Malaysia.

"The number of mini-markets grew by about 60 per cent from 250 in 2009 to 408 last year, reflecting that the segment was the fastest growing among retail outlets last year.

"Besides store accessibility, mini- markets are competitive in pricing and offer products that are good value for money."

Readers' comments (1)

1. Price increase is acceptable if the cause is genuine. Eg. Market demand, and items are scares.

2. But, if it is due to some party, manipulating prices for the sake of achieving high profits and returns without giving the thought to the poor and needy, in other words, total lost of customers' obligation, then it is a real sorry state.

3. Government, on the other hand, should have enough "sensors", to monitor the condition before it spread like wildfire. Notably, the rakyat would blame the government for setting loose of the monitoring.

4. Establishing logistical framework might help in the long run. Eg. sugar shortage. As responsible government, the government need to establish more acreage on the sugar plantation. We don't advise people to stay away from taking sugar! Sugar cane could also be planted on 3,4 or 5 stories building!

5. Our imaginative must goes on forever. As difficulties and challenges would always knock on our doors. Take the challenges, and we could be better!

CESC Fabregas received a ringing endorsement of his value to Arsenal from his teammates yesterday in perhaps a belated bid to convince their captain his future lies with the Gunners.

Spaniard Fabregas, who did not join Arsenal on the club's visit to Kuala Lumpur owing to a muscle strain, is a target of European champions Barcelona, his boyhood Spanish club.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said Fabregas' value to the club goes beyond his presence on the pitch.

"As a leader, he has to show not just leadership during games but also in the team. He's the best player in the team and you don't get a leader like that from a player who just walks in and out," said Wilshere in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Even if Fabregas does leave, England international Wilshere believes the club's future is secured given the number of talented players coming through the ranks.

"The future looks good not just for Arsenal but England as well. We've got Kieran Gibbs coming at left-back whose coming up and Theo (Walcott) and I are already in the England team.

"We hope to get a few more players in. I know we haven't won a trophy in a while, but if you win one, more players will come," said Wilshere, 19, who at the age of 16 years and 256 days in September 2008, became Arsenal's youngest-ever league debutant, a record previously held by Fabregas.

Walcott concurred: "Look at Jack, he's done fantastic for us and the club give younger players a chance to really develop. It's great for confidence, and in four years' time, more and more players will be coming through."

Wilshere and Walcott spoke before joining teammates Alex Song and Wojciech Szczesny in a kick-about with the tournament's finalists at the Mid-Valley Megamall.

Arsenal begin their build-up to the 2011-12 English Premier League season today when they meet the national team at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

McLaren mishaps leave them straggling

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:55 AM PDT

LONDON: A weekend of blunders at the British Grand Prix has left McLaren bosses red-faced, with their hopes of catching Red Bull in the Formula One championship all but gone.

The mishaps began on Saturday when Lewis Hamilton qualified in 10th after being given the wrong tyres in qualifying and pessimistic team principal Martin Whitmarsh publicly acknowledged that their car is just not fast enough.

While Hamilton defied that gloomy forecast to weave his way through the field up to a podium position at one stage, a fuel shortage forced him to slow down and finish in fourth.

Jenson Button fared even worse, with a botched pit-stop leading to his retirement 12 laps from the end.

In perhaps the understatement of the weekend, Whitmarsh said Button and Hamilton were "in some ways a little bit handicapped in the race and that's a shame."

It left McLaren 110 points adrift of Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship and Hamilton fourth in the drivers' standings, 95 points behind leader Sebastian Vettel.

"We all make mistakes, and you always hope they won't happen," Button said. "But this is even more disappointing as it's in front of my home crowd."

The Briton was released from his pit stop by a mechanic who didn't notice that a wheelnut had not been fully secured to the front right wheel.

While leaving the pit lane, the wheel began to wobble and Button pulled off the track in despair -- maintaining an unenviable record of having never finished on the podium at his home race.

The team principal tried to avoid making anyone the fall-guy for the bungling.

In the end, it could be Whitmarsh who pays the price for the mistakes in front of a record 122,000 Silverstone crowd.

"I am confident I will stay in my job," he said. "I answer to the board -- not just (group chairman) Ron (Dennis) -- and they seem happy with the job I am doing -- certainly for now." -- AP

SALUTE TO THE CORPS

SALUTE TO THE CORPS

1,024 undergraduate volunteer police corps end their training in style with the passing-out parade

IN a ceremony steeped in Royal Malaysian Police tradition, 1,024 undergraduate volunteer police corps, otherwise known as Suksis, ended their training in a passing-out parade at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently.

It was the seventh annual graduation held since the corps programme for undergraduates was established in 2005.

The participants, hailing from 19 institutions of higher learning in the country, took part in the day-long parade and certificate-presentation ceremony attended by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

Also present were Federal police logistics director Commissioner Datuk Pahlawan Zulkifli Abdullah, Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, and National Suksis Corps commandant, with the honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner, Professor Datuk Dr Rujhan Mustafa, who represented the Higher Education Ministry.

UTM was represented by vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang and the university's Suksis Corp commandant, with the honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner, Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Tajudin Ninggal.

There were 770 participants in the passing-out parade, which signified the end of their training as Suksis Corps officers with the honorary entry-level rank of Inspector.

At the parade, the IGP inspected the guard-of-honour led by Hamzah Harjono.

Later, a four-man police commando team from the VAT 69 detachmen in portable aerial gliders flew the flags and colours of Malaysia, Johor, the Royal Malaysian Police and UTM.

The undergraduates were from UTM, Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam, Universiti Teknologi Mara Penang, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Melaka, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.

Ismail said the corps programme had seen an increase in participation since its inception.

"The response has been encouraging, and the programme will hopefully assist the police in achieving its objectives in the long-term," he said.

He also expressed his confidence that the next generation of Royal Malaysian Police leaders, and even the next IGP, could come from the ranks of the corps.

Those who have completed the programme are encouraged to join the force as probationary inspectors. However, like any police officer candidate, they will have to undergo the same training.

Rujhan said the corps initiative was an innovative programme that enhanced cooperation between the educational universities and the force.

This is the first time UTM is hosting the Suksis Corp passing-out parade.

The host was UM in Kuala Lumpur last year.

The Suksis Corps, which is similar to the police volunteer programme, is the brainchild of former prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after his visit to UUM on Feb 4, 1999 as deputy prime minister.

The corps' objective is to mould undergraduates into upholders of the law and keepers of peace.

A hotel that shuns not durians

A hotel that shuns not durians

DURIAN lovers know that the king of fruits are not welcomed in hotels. In fact, they are prohibited as can be attested to by signs on hotel walls and its lifts.

However, durian connoisseurs will be happy to know that Pulai Springs Resort in Johor is hosting a durian festival on Friday and Saturday at the outdoor area of Gleneagles Terrace restaurant.

Pulai Springs Resort general manager Tengku Ahmad Faizal said apart from the fresh fruits, one could also savour more than 50 types of durian-based dishes.

Among them are roti canai durian, ikan patin gulai tempoyak, singgang asam gulai durian, gulai udang kuning durian kampung, durian pancakes, durian tarts and durian smoothies.

Also available are pan-fried and grilled durian items.

The ever-popular fried durian will also be on offer.

"It's not well known but makes for a tantalising fruit puff when deep-fried in batter," said Tengku Faizal.

He said the al fresco dining area at the restaurant was a suitable place for the buffet to be held as the durian scent can be overpowering indoors.

The "all-you-can-eat" buffet costs RM52++ per person and is from 6pm to 9pm.

However, guests should take note that durians are still not allowed in hotel rooms.
