Call to rural communities to help safeguard the environment

JULAU, Sarawak: Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang today advised the rural communities in Sarawak to play their role in safeguarding the environment.

Salang, who is deputy minister of information, communications and culture, said they should stop treating rivers as rubbish dumps, refrain from felling trees along river banks and never use chemicals to fish.

He said this at the closing of a "Friends of the Environment" programme for community leaders and students at SMK Julau here. The text of his speech was read out by his senior private secretary, Danny Bungan.

Salang also said that the people should adopt environment-friendly technology like energy-saving bulbs in their homes, schools and offices, and prefer to use reusable bags when shopping. -- BERNAMA

Najib: My daughter was not even in Australia

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has tweeted a denial over an Australian news report that his wife and daughter had shopped excessively during his visit to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Perth recently.

Najib, who is in Mecca to perform the haj, replied to a question in a tweet by @LawRyan34 posted on Wednesday.

The tweet was: "@NajibRazak according to news, your lovely wife purchased a neckless worth a whopping 150k. Your daughter spend bout 60k."

The prime minister replied on the same day and said, "@LawRyan34 ....Don't believe n spread lies. My daughter was not even in Australia n my wife did not buy any jewellery."

The reply came on the heels of the publication of an article in The West Australian newspaper, which stated that Najib's daughter was believed to have spent a whopping RM180,000 (A$60,000) in David Jones, a high-end department store at a shopping centre in Perth, the venue of the CHOGM gathering.

The same report also stated that "one first lady" purchased WA pearls worth RM450,000 (A$150,000), but did not name the person.

The Malaysian consulate-general in Perth had said the allegation against Najib's daughter was not true. Consul-general Hamidah Ashari, in a letter to The West Australian's editor on Tuesday, had said her office was appalled upon reading the article "Delegates go shopping, sightseeing" published in the Oct 31 issue.

She said Najib's daughter was not part of the prime minister's delegation attending CHOGM, nor was she in Perth at that time.

The prime minister's political secretary, Datuk Fatmi Che Salleh, had also said the article was incorrect.

Student loses suit against Khazanah over scholarship

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 11:05 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today struck out a suit brought by a student against Khazanah Nasional Bhd after he had failed to obtain a scholarship offered by the investment arm of the government for study at the University of Cambridge.

Judge Datuk John Louis O'Hara ruled that the claim by Chan Zian Yao, 19, against Khazanah and three others was closer to no reasonable cause of action and held that the suit was frivolous and vexatious and an abuse of the court process.

He made the ruling after allowing the application by Khazanah and the three others to strike out the suit. He also ordered Chan to pay RM5,000 in costs to the defendants.

Chan had filed the suit on Aug 18 through the law firm of his father Chan Chow Wang, naming Khazanah chief executive officer Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, its director Azman Mohd Hussein, Khazanah and Yayasan Khazanah as the defendants.
The elder Chan, who represented his son, told reporters later that he would appeal against the court's decision. Counsel Nitin Nadkarni acted for the defendants.

Chan had sought a declaration to invalidate the three scholarships given out by Khazanah and also claimed compensation and damages for distress and embarrassment as a result of not being selected for the scholarship.

Chan, who has been offered a place at the University of Cambridge for a four-year Chemical Engineering via Natural Sciences degree starting last October, claimed that the defendants had not carried out a fair and proper selection process.

He claimed that Yayasan Khazanah sent him an e-mail merely stating that his application was unsuccessful without giving any reason.

Chan said in a newspaper report dated June 11 that the defendants had announced three recipients of the scholarship but did not divulge details such as their names, the courses pursued or their academic achievements.

The Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide financial sponsorship to Malaysian citizens with excellent academic results who wish to study at the University of Cambridge. -- BERNAMA

I can take on Aziz anytime: Dr Zul

GUA MUSANG: Pas' candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed remained a good sport over jokes that his stocky frame might tire him fast during the campaign trail.

He said he was used to work long hours when he was a doctor at government hospitals in the past.

"There were times when I had to work over 36 hours on a stretch, then. I think I can keep up with the hectic campaign schedule now," he said.

Dr Zulkefli, 44, will be up against Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, in the Galas by-election on Nov 4.

Some segments of political watchers have been heard making comparisons between the two candidates of their physiques.

Such light banter follows an absence of substantive issues to debate since campaigning started on Nov 26.

Dr Zulkefli said he was feeling alright even when there were many places to visit over the past three days.

To keep fit, he said he took a lot of water and sufficient rest.

When a reporter asked about his weight, Dr Zulkefli said: "I do not know. Let us keep it as a secret."

In jest, he said he could take on Aziz in a running or tug-of-war competition.

Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures.
The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership.

A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself.

I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ".

Frankly how many can do that ?

This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example.

Traits of great leader who make small people feel great.

Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders.

It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count.

We should not trumpet about it.

High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah.

Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation.

Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible.

The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number.

In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ?

Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind.

My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise.

And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful.

The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered.

First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?.

Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ?

The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members.

However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants.

Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency, the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident.

Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different.

As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say, with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters.

From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess.

To me the annoucement seems to be made in conjunction with the coming BN convention in Kuala Lumpur in an effort to influence its outcomes

PARIS: A Cristiano Ronaldo double earned Real Madrid a 2-0 win at Olympique Lyon and a place in the first knockout round of the Champions League with two games to spare on Wednesday.

Ronaldo fired home midway through the first half with a trademark free kick and doubled his tally from the penalty spot after the break as Real maintained their perfect record at the top of Group D after four matches. The penalty was Ronaldo's 100th goal for Real in 105 matches since joining from Manchester United in 2009.

Real are the only team in the competition to have a maximum 12 points from four matches and also the only side not to have conceded a goal.

"All the goals are special, all the more so when it helps the team to win," Ronaldo said. "That's what I try to do in every game and I am happy for the team and for the goals too."

Lyon, who were without key players Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos, lie third on four points and in danger of not qualifying after they struggled to create clear chances in a one-sided game at Gerland stadium. "They're a very balanced team, they press very hard," said Lyon fullback Anthony Reveillere. "They are very quick towards goal."

Real always looked on top against a seemingly harmless Lyon team, who only came close in the 67th minute when Ederson had a couple of shots parried by Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo's 25-metre strike was blocked by Hugo Lloris as Real got off to a lively start in a packed arena. The France keeper also pulled off a great save to deny Karim Benzema on 10 minutes after the former Lyon striker was nicely set up by Mesut Ozil's through pass.

The visitors, however, were rewarded in the 24th minute when Ronaldo beat Lloris with an explosive 20-metre free kick which was Real's 900th European goal.

Lyon, overrun in midfield, struggled to get near Real's penalty area and were too shot-shy when they managed to. They had a chance on the stroke of halftime when Yoann Gourcuff unleashed a rising shot that was tipped over the bar by Iker Casillas.

Real, however, were in a class of their own and moved 2-0 ahead when Ronaldo netted from the spot in the 69th minute after the Portugal forward had crashed into Mouhamadou Dabo. Lyon came close to reducing the arrears 13 minutes from time but Jimmy Briand's header from a Gourcuff corner crashed against the bar as Lyon, formally Real's bogey side, suffered their first home defeat by a Spanish team in 10 years. Real beat Lyon 4-0 in the Bernabeu earlier in the group.

"We play some nice football, everyone fights on the pitch, we play fast," said Benzema, who for the first time in four games did not score against his former club.

"The most important was for the team to win," said Ronaldo. "The coach asked us to win this game so we could qualify for the next phase. It was a very tough game against a very good team but we are very happy because we have already qualified." -- Reuters

THANK YOU, TEACHERS

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:53 AM PDT

2011/11/02
By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

Some 130 teachers from schools in Johor and Malacca were feted at Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort

SOME 130 teachers from schools in Johor and Malacca that subscribe to New Straits Times (NST) and Berita Harian (BH) were recently given a treat at Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort in Pasir Gudang.

The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) Teacher's Appreciation Day 2011 was to thank the schools for using the newspapers as teaching aids.

NSTP circulation department general manager for business development Salmah Hanim Hares said the newspapers helped in the learning process.

She said the newspapers were useful as teaching aids in class, while the educational pullouts provided examination tips, revision exercises and explanations of the school syllabus.

This would, in the long run, help to strengthen the country's educational system, she said.

For many years, teachers have taken part in programmes organised by Berita Harian's education unit and NST's Newspaper-in-Education (NIE), which utilise the newspapers as a source reference.

NSTP publishes various weekly supplements focused on different levels of education. Berita Harian offers Skor, Didik and Varsiti.

Salmah said these three supplements were well received by teachers and students, who find them helpful in preparing for examinations.

NST's educational sections such as Learning Curve and Niexter provide the latest information, features and events related to education. Some of these sections have articles penned by school students.

These pullouts inform the reader of what's happening in schools and higher learning institutions in Malaysia and overseas.

The NIE concept dates back to the 18th century in the state of Maine in the United States, where it was used to promote civic awareness among students as well as develop their reading and life skills.

It was New York Times that first put the NIE concept into practice in the 1930s. Since then, 700 newspapers worldwide have adopted it.

SK Kangkar Pulai 2 teacher Rabiatul Adawiyah Abdul Rahim, 33, said Didik had enabled many of her pupils to be well-prepared for their examinations.

"Since the school subscribed to BH last year, we have noticed an improvement in academic achievement among pupils. They are able to answer their examination questions better, and we notice better achievement, particularly in essay-writing," she said.

SK Sri Laksana teacher, Halimah Mat Sarip, 54, said the school had noted an almost 80 per cent increase in academic achievement following the usage of educational supplements under the NSTP group of newspapers.

She said her pupils were now able to better understand lessons in English and Bahasa Malaysia grammar.

"Previously, many pupils were less skilled in grammar, but now they are more confident, especially during conversations."

The teachers' appreciation day programme included an aerobic session, games, karaoke and special stage performances. The event received support from Dutch Lady, Seba Med, Hot Perfume, Zymtechworld and Maybank.

Also present were Johor NSTP marketing assistant manager Shazli Aghus, Malacca marketing assistant manager K. Gunasegaran, and Johor Education Department assistant director (English) S. Shanmuganathan.

Chef Sun’s hot for his winning dishes

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:26 AM PDT

By Chuah Bee Kim

IF Chin Chee Sing had not been cajoled into accepting a job at a Chinese restaurant many years ago, food connoisseurs in Johor Baru would not have the chance been able to savour his innovative recipes today at the newly opened Loon Sing Restaurant in Bukit Indah, Johor Baru.

Chin, otherwise known as Chef Sun, is a celebrity chef of sorts, having appeared in a series of local and international cooking programmes on television.

With a string of awards under his belt, Chin had been also been selected as a judge in numerous local and international cooking competitions.

His seemingly endless string of accolades include winning the Hot Dish category in the fourth World Championship of Chinese Cuisines that was held in Kuala Lumpur in 2002.

Then in 2005, where he won in the "hot dish" category and the "the World Master of Skill" award from Les Amis d'Escoffier in the event held in Guangzhou, China.

The 40-year-old, with 23 years of culinary experience in Chinese cuisine, also garnered a gold with distinction and a Best Food Presentation award in the food exhibition and decoration category in the fifth World Golden Chef competition in Kuala Lumpur in the that same year.

At the fifth KL International Gourmet Festival, also held again in 2005, Chin once again emerged champion in the Most Creative Restaurant Display category.

The irony is that Chin had never planned to become a chef nor was cooking his ever his passion.

"When I left school, someone suggested that I help out at the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant. Since I was not interested in furthering my studies and I was jobless at the time, I accepted the offer," said Chin.

From a kitchen helper, Chin went on to work in well-known restaurants throughout Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and China.

Besides churning out dishes, Chin is a also a part-time columnist for a local Chinese daily writing about what he knows best — Chinese food.

Among the dishes found on the menu of the Loon Sing Restaurant, which features a dark and which is set in an elegant setting that is said to be the latest trend in restaurants in China, are the binchotan (note: correct spelling) charcoal beancurd, the Fuzhou-styled Buddha jumps over the wall, double-boiled spare ribs and fish maw soup with American ginseng in teapot, and the Szechuan-styled dried chilli chicken with peppermint.

"For the spare ribs and fish maw soup, which had has nutritious ingredients such as dendrobium, dried scallops and bamboo piths, the dish was it is boiled for a total of 10 hours before serving.

"No monosodium glutamate is added in our recipes as we know diners today are health-conscious.

"The pork belly that we use for our deng bo rou (a popular Chinese dish) is also processed to get the oil out before we marinate it with honey," added Chin.

As for the bin-chotan charcoal beancurd, which is one the restaurant's signature dishes, Chin uses bin-chotan charcoal powder imported from Japan. His herbs and spices are sourced locally, as well as from countries such as Japan, China and Australia.

The non-halal two-storey restaurant, which can accommodate up to 500 guests, recently added dim sum dishes to its menu.
