Indian fans run riot as Metallica axe gig

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:33 PM PDT

NEW DELHI: Angry fans smashed equipment and hurled bottles in chaotic scenes after heavy metal group Metallica cancelled their first ever Indian gig at the last minute.

Thousands of fans had already turned up at Friday's concert, timed to coincide with this weekend's Formula One Grand Prix, but were enraged when it was axed for safety reasons.

Newspaper pictures showed piles of shattered equipment and the Times of India said one man broke his leg when he was pushed down a stairwell in a stampede.

"Many others were also injured in the melee," Shouvik Roy, 41, was quoted as saying, adding that some youths were also taken to hospital. "There were no marshals to guide people and few cops to help."

Metallica said the concert in Gurgaon, near New Delhi, was initially postponed to Saturday because of damage to a security barrier, but organisers were then unable to secure a second permit.

"We are deeply disappointed with this news as we were looking forward to our first experience in India as much as you guys were," they said in a statement late on yesterday.

The Times, which pictured youths in Metallica T-shirts shouting and showing their middle fingers, said fans tore down sound systems, barriers and hoardings, and threw bottles at the stage and LED display screens.

"I'm glad my sons got out from the #Metallica madness unscathed. Why can't we organise an event without drama????" tweeted Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah.

The incident comes after Canadian rocker Bryan Adams called off a concert this year when police refused to give clearance. Flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga is due to perform after the Indian Grand Prix on tomorrow. -- AFP

DPM: Empower BM as language of knowledge, progress

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:10 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today opened the 8th Malay Literary and Language Congress with a call to the people to empower Bahasa Melayu as a language of knowledge and progress while learning other languages to master the knowledge available in those languages.

He said language advocates had an important role to play in empowering Bahasa Melayu by fostering a positive attitude in the people towards the national language.

"Language advocates should not act as a mere pressure group but must go down to the ground, to be with the people, and be the drivers of awareness for the multiracial population to gain confidence in the ability of Bahasa Melayu as a language of knowledge and progress," said Muhyiddin, who is also education minister.

Intellectuals should intensify efforts to bring out works in Bahasa Melayu besides coining terminology for science and technology in the language, he said.

"The government, on its part, will strengthen the role of the National Translation Institute which will step up efforts to translate quality international academic books to expand the treasure of knowledge in Bahasa Melayu," he said. -- BERNAMA

MACC begins probe
36 files opened on irregularities highlighted by auditor-general

2011/10/29
By Farrah Naz Karim
farrah@nst.com.my

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has begun a series of investigations into irregularities revealed in the Auditor-General's Report 2010.

Less than a week after the report was made public, MACC has opened 36 files, including scores of investigation papers on, among others, elements of non-compliance and falsification of documents by government agencies.

MACC investigations director Datuk Mustafar Ali said the investigations were initiated as it believed several areas highlighted by the report warranted probing.

"However, when I say we are looking at 36 cases, some of them are to ascertain if there are grounds to pursue them.

"We'll also look out for elements of negligence, ignorance and those that involve graft," he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

Mustafar said that in probing "unrealistic" spending by certain agencies, MACC would also study specifications submitted prior to the purchase of the items.

"For instance, if what was submitted was specs 'A' but the purchases did not reflect them and turned out to be specs 'B', that should not have happened.

"When this sort of non-compliance happens and payment is made, that is considered falsification of documents. This is clearly an offence under Section 18 of the MACC Act."

Asked if MACC felt the differences in pricing highlighted in the report were absurd, Mustafar said his officers refrained from drawing premature conclusions but would look at the evidence in each case.

The report, tabled in Parliament on Monday, highlighted several glaring discrepancies in the spending of several government agencies.

They included the Marine Parks Department's RM56,350 purchase for a pair of night vision goggles (despite its market value being RM1,940), as well as the payment of RM56,350 (instead of RM2,827) for a pair of Bushnell binoculars.

The report also listed four other items that showed the department paid 77 per cent to 2,805 per cent more than it should have been, leading to a price difference of RM172,501.

The department had purchased a laptop colour printer for RM11,845 (246 per cent more than the market value of RM3,428), a LCD television with DVD player for RM16,100 (when the market value was only RM2,182) as well as colour marine radar for RM56,350 (when it could be bought for RM8,255).

The department's spending on a hand-held portable VHF transceiver was also questioned as they paid 177 per cent more for the items at RM4,324 (instead of RM2,763 each).

The auditor-general also had an issue with the spending by Majlis Amanah Rakyat on some of its purchases, including an oven at RM1,200 (compared with the market price of RM419), for baking and pastry-making courses in Kelantan.

Also in question are payments made for the procurement of folding beds at RM500 (against the market price of RM100), two-burner gas cookers at RM200 each (rather than RM59.90), hair clippers supplied at RM250 each (instead of RM79) and a blender at RM140 (instead of RM60).

The auditor-general also noted that most of the purchases were done through direct negotiations, not open tender, and without the Finance Ministry's approval.

Standard operating procedures were also disregarded as the intention for purchase of the items was not tabled before the Mara board of directors for approval.

The auditor-general, in its recommendation to prevent a recurrence of such absurd purchases, had asked that experienced staff be put in charge of ordering items on behalf of the government, adding that research should be done to compare prices in the market before an order was placed.

Meanwhile, Public Accounts Committee chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said the panel would sit next week to look into the discrepancies highlighted in the report.

He had said on Monday that at least seven of the ministries or agencies would need to explain their weak financial management. They included the Health Ministry, Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, Transport Ministry, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, Inland Revenue Board, Customs Department and National Stadium Corporation.

Angry fans hack FAM website

2011/10/29
By Ajitpal Singh
ajitpalsingh@nst.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: Angry fans have defaced the website of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), with hackers changing its logo and posting vulgar remarks.

FAM general-secretary Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said the association would lodge a police report.

"This is not the first time. It is something we have experienced before," said Azzuddin, after the Malaysia Cup final team managers' meeting at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday.

It is believed that the website (www.fam.org.my) was defaced by hackers demanding that the ticket price for today's Malaysia Cup final between Terengganu and Negri Sembilan be reduced.

FAM had raised the ticket price by introducing a flat rate of RM50 last week. Previously, ticket prices were between RM30 and RM50.

The hackers called the move "illogical" and branded FAM as a capitalist. The defaced page credited UM'07, cr3ws, gaysec and anti-p4sti for the hacking.

More than 54,000 tickets were sold in Kuala Terengganu and Seremban.

Fans can buy 16,000 tickets at the stadium from 9am today.

ZUBAIDAH ABU BAKAR:
Pas goes 'under the radar'

Even the presence of Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat at a ceramah in Pas stronghold Sungai Terah on Thursday failed to draw the crowd.

Many blamed the heavy rain which started to pour earlier but the rain had stopped before the Tok Guru took the microphone.

There was an estimated crowd of about 200 people; its usually not the case

as Pas supporters would braved the rain, willing to be soaked to the skin
to listen to the party's spiritual leader and Kelantan menteri besar speak.

The Sungai Terah polling district has about 95 per cent of Malay voters; in the 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional only managed 78 votes compared to Pas' 215 votes.

That was how strong the Islamist party's influence there then.

But Umno leaders are anticipating that the situation could change, they believe the level of support to Pas may dip when some 300 registered voters there go to the ballot again on Nov 4 to pick their new representative in the state legislative assembly.

"Our candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff had done a good job in the area, the people know him well because he had served the area as a manager in the South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar).

"He could well be the reason behind the positive signs we are getting in the area," says Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

The "ceramah perdana" in Sungai Terah are among the few big public rallies that Pakatan Rakyat had outlined for its bigwigs to speak -- the other speakers at the ceramah that day were Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP
secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Pas is adopting a "low profile, below the radar" campaign strategy for Galas and this had somewhat toned the otherwise heated campaigns like during the Manik Urai by-election, which is the first by-election in Kelantan, last year.

Pas leaders wanted more direct contacts with voters be carried out; opting for small group ceramah and door to door campaigning, which ironically the same strategy that Umno and BN has adopted.

No big rally had been planned on BN's side either, including the "Pentas Pemuda" that usually make its appearance in past by-elections. Only eight mini ceramahs involving between 30-40 people and similar number of 'salam sayang" programmes (chit chat sessions) by wanita Umno are being organised daily.

Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and his troops have been knocking on doors of those identified as fence-sitters in several areas daily. They even bumped into their opponents during their campaign trails, like the on in Kampung Mentara where Pas had won by 11 votes in the area in 2008.

A source also revealed there is a list of do's and dont's for Pas campaigners and that include not touching the Kelantan oil royalty issue and on Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is also the BN by-election director.

Canvassing for votes in whatever forms will continue until the eve of polling. For Abdul Aziz and his opponent from Pas, Dr Zulkefli Mohamad, the days ahead will be long and tiring.

BN aims for smaller, but effective meetings

2010/10/30
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: Barisan Nasional candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff said he would continue with his plan to personally meet as many voters as he could although such an approach could slow down his campaign trail.

"I want to know them apart from introducing myself as BN candidate. I also want to know the problems faced by the voters here," he told a press conference at BN operations centre in Bukit Cekati here.

Aziz, who is Gua Musang Umno division secretary, also refuted claims that the BN election machinery for Galas by-election was too slow. He said the party machinery was actually giving more focus on small gatherings which would enable them to understand the people's problems and needs.

"From the feedback that I personally gathered from voters, they are frustrated with the Pas state government's failure to issue land titles and provide affordable homes for them," he said.

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan who was present said BN would continue with its present approach, which was to hold dozens of small gatherings at different polling districts daily.

"We will use these gatherings to explain on BN government's development plan and counter all the allegations made by the opposition.

"It's more effective compared to big ceramahs," he said.

However, he said no gatherings would be held tonight as to allow BN campaigners and voters here to watch the Malaysia Cup final match between Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. He said BN would put giant projector screens at 14 locations as to allow the people here to watch the final match live.

KL bourse expected to strengthen

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 07:35 PM PDT

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia are expected to extend gains next week on heightened global risk appetite boosted by good news from Europe and the US economic outlook, dealers said.

"Going forward next week, we expect investors to price in the stronger US and Europe economy as well as the reduced banking crisis risk in both continents," Affin Investment Bank's Head of Retail Research, Dr Nazri Khan told Bernama today. The private sector investors recently agreed to make a 50 per cent cut in Greek bonds and it is expected to boost the firepower of the eurozone rescue fund to US$1.4 trillion (US$1=RM3.13) while the US third quarter gross domestic product data rose 2.5 per cent. "These will push the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) index to a possible 1,524 level, which is FBM KLCI high made in 2008 before the subprime crisis," he added.

In line with the positive trend on regional markets, Nazri said the traditional year-end rally has started and is likely to last before Chinese New Year 2012.

Meanwhile, TA Securities senior technical analyst Stephen Soo said the benchmark index is expected to strengthen next week, boosted by rising appetite in riskier assets.

"We foresee the positive sentiment globally will further help properties and construction stocks to slightly recover after their recent losses," he added.

However, OSK Research director/research head Chris Eng said the market is still in defensive position and investors remain cautious amid the uncertain global economic outlook.

"There is a possibility the market will dip if the index reaches the 1,500 level, due to selling pressure," he added. Meanwhile, during the whole trading week, the local bourse was in a positive movement with the benchmark index ending Friday's trade with 10.89 points at 1,481.82.

Bursa Malaysia was closed on Thursday for the Deepavali holiday.

On a week-to-week basis, the FBM KLCI advanced 42.99 points to 1,481.82 compared to last Friday's closing at 1,438.83.

The Finance Index gained 339.47 points to 13,420.59 while the Plantation Index rose 177.75 points to 7,494.68 and the Industrial Index added 77.35 points to 2,714.66.

The FBM Emas Index rose 310.41 points to 10,117.36, the FBM70 Index advanced 418.94 points to 10,959.65, the FBM Ace Index gained 112.46 points to 4,072.95 while the FBMT100 added 307.83 points to 9,935.99.

Total weekly volume declined 6.033 billion shares worth RM7.097 billion from 7.391 billion shares worth RM6.584 billion last week.

Main Market turnover fell 4.674 billion units worth RM6.941 billion from 5.491 billion units worth RM6.362 billion on Friday.

Warrants turnover slipped to 471.509 million units valued at RM30.039 million from Friday's 659.107 million units valued at RM32.675 million.

Volume on the ACE market dwindled to 775.248 million units worth RM111.181 million from 1.194 billion units worth RM164.173 million last week. -- Bernama

Ringgit likely to see sideways trading

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 07:29 PM PDT

The ringgit is likely to see sideways trading next week over the positive outcome of the eurozone debt meeting, dealers said.

The initial agreement euro zone leaders reinforced growing confidence in recent days that they were prepared to handle the issue seriously. A dealer said the ringgit would likely be traded between 3.0680 and 3.0850 next week.

However, the market would remain cautious, as investors are still waiting for the final stage solution to Europe's economic woes, he said. The ringgit ended the week higher at 3.0680/0720 per US dollar compared to 3.1470/1520 at Friday's close. The ringgit mostly depreciated against other major currencies.

However, it fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.4668/4702 from 2.4599/4658 but strengthened against the Japanese yen to 4.0431/0487 from 4.1030/1117 Friday.

The ringgit appreciated against the British pound to 4.9420/9484 from 4.9672/9761 but tumbled against the euro to 4.3488/3540 from 4.3265/3346 Friday. -- Bernama

Football / Malaysia Cup: Terengganu have become a class act

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 09:52 AM PDT

2011/10/29
Devinder Singh
devinder@nst.com.my

Abdul Hadi Yahya (Terengganu)

Abdul Hadi Yahya (Terengganu)

IT has been a long time coming and the time is nigh for Terengganu to stamp their authority on the local football scene.

Having built one of the strongest squads in Terengganu's history, coach Irfan Bakti Abu Salim stands on the cusp of emulating the Malaysia Cup triumph of Mat Zan Mat Aris in 2001, the only time the East Coast state have won Malaysian football most prestigious honour.

Irfan has formed a talented and consistent team that have already reaped their rewards with the FA Cup final win over Kelantan earlier this year.

Testament to Terengganu's strength is the fact that seven of their players have been called up by national coach K. Rajagobal for two friendly matches against India next month.

In Ashaari Samsudin and Manaf Mamat, Terengganu possess two exciting forwards who clearly know where the back of the net is, having scored five and six goals respectively in this competition.

Super League top scorer Hadi Yahya has yet to find the mark in the Malaysia Cup but that does not mean the striker should be counted out as he remains a vital cog in the Terengganu machinery and is more than capable of adding to his tally of 26 goals for state and country this season.

Reeshafiq Alwi is the unsung hero in midfield who is a constant thorn to opposing teams, quietly stamping his authority while providing sufficient cover for his defence and allowing Joseph Kalang Tie the freedom to carve apart opposing defences with his crafty skills.

The player who began his career under Mat Zan at Kuala Lumpur and later KL Plus, has blossomed under Irfan's guidance and but for the presence of talent elsewhere, should have found his way into the national set up.

Goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli has copped some flak for his performance with the national team but there is no doubt he has been instrumental in Terengganu's run to the final.

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the 5-3 aggregate quarter-final victory over Kelantan or the double over Selangor in the semi-finals when a string of fine saves kept his team in the ascendancy.

Central defender Mazuki Yusof provides the leadership and experience in the team, which has been crucial in a defence that boast relatively young players in Faizal Muhammad, Zubir Azmi and Mazlizam Mohamad.

Terengganu's 2-1 win over Perak in the 2001 final remains their greatest achievement yet but the class of 2011 will surpass anything they have done in the past should they hold aloft the trophy on tonight at the Shah Alam Stadium.

Probable line-up

Football / Malaysia Cup: Negri believe in themselves again

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 09:44 AM PDT

Ajitpal Singh
ajitpalsingh@nst.com.my

NEGRI Sembilan faced some difficult moments this season in terms of injuries, controversies and adversities. But they withstood every test bravely to reach their third successive Malaysia Cup final.

Former national Under-21 coach Azraai Khor Abdullah, who took over from Wan Jamak Wan Hassan, in April, had the near impossible task of toughening up a bunch of unmotivated players but despite the odds, the 59-year-old managed to turn them into a winning side.

Azraai first helped the team avoid relegation as they moved up four rungs from 12th position in the Super League.

It was tough then as Azraai had to dig deep to even name 18 fit players for Super League matches as many were injured. In some games, he had to resort to using Negri's President Cup players in his line-up.

The break before the Malaysia Cup, however, helped in Negri's recovery as the injured key players soon returned to full fitness and at the same time, Azraai used the opportunity to make tactical changes.

Negri's resurrection began at the start of the Malaysia Cup, when they edged Terengganu, PKNS and Sime Darby to top Group B to advance to the quarter-finals.

Attacking midfielder Shahurain Abu Samah and veteran Hairuddin Omar have been instrumental and with 13 goals between them in the Malaysia Cup, they will be the ones to watch in the final.

Shahurain and Hairuddin have personal ambitions in today's final — both want to score for the third successive time in a Malaysia Cup final.

For the record, they scored three goals in Negri's 3-1 win over Kelantan in the 2009 final.

And in last year's final, both players scored again but this time Hairuddin did it for Kelantan to help the east coast side edge Negri 2-1.

Negri, who are the underdogs, are expected to take a cautious approach against a formidable Terengganu's strike force.

However, contrary to popular belief, Terengganu are not unbeatable, and it is unwise for anyone to write off Negri before a single ball has been kicked.
Sure, this is the biggest test of the season by far, but don't think for a second that Negri will be lacking in readiness and in belief.

This is normally the part where I'd insert a prediction, but there won't be one. Instead, I'll close with five simple words, and you can make of it what you will: Champions aren't crowned on paper.

Probable line-up

Goalkeeper: Farizal Marlias
Defenders: Norhafiz Zamani Misbah, Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak, Irwan Fadzli Idrus, Mohd Alif Samsudin

SETTING SAIL

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 11:09 AM PDT

2011/10/27
By Sim Bak Heng

Trainee yachters, aged seven to 20, devote their weekends to train their sea legs in Tanjung Leman, Mersing

THE sea is their training ground. Choppy water and unpredictable weather conditions are their challenges. Falling into the water with the boat landing sideways is just part of the game.

This is the life for 54 young trainee yachters, aged seven to 20, whose weekends are devoted to yachting practice off Tanjung Leman in Mersing, while their peers enjoy computer games or social-networking indoors.

For them, the best time is the weekend, when they can meet up with friends of similar interest from different parts of the state, and have fun with water and wind.

While it is fun to sail in the sea, the trainees have to strictly adhere to the discipline set by the Johor Yachting Association.

Rain or shine, they have to come for training, except during Ramadan, Hari Raya, school examinations or when they fall sick.

Those absent from training for three consecutive weeks without any valid reasons would be expelled and banned from any future training.

All trainees are picked up from their respective homes on Friday evening before travelling to Tanjung Leman. They are driven home after their training on Sunday.

Training is from 8am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. First-timers undergo talent-identity and water-confidence tests to see if they are suitable for the sport.

Muhamad Amirul Shafiq Md Jais, 17, from Kampung Perigi Acheh in Johor Baru, said he took up yachting six years ago when he was in Standard Five, on the recommendation of a teacher.

"I join out of curiosity, and after the first try, I knew it was definitely for me. It took me about two years to master the skills," he said.

Over the years, Muhamad Amirul has won about 20 medals, 15 of which are gold.

He has taken part in many yachting (laser category) tournaments overseas, in Brazil, France, the Middle East, Thailand and Singapore.

Naquib Eiman Shahrin, 12, of Kampung Majidee Baru in Johor Baru, said he has been training for three years. It was his friend who encouraged him to take up the sport.

He has taken part in more than 20 tournaments, including in Indonesia and India, and won two gold medals.

"The sport is interesting. Balance is important, or one will easily fall into the water with the yacht.

"Such embarrassing situations are very common, and I have had my share of them quite often," said Naquib, who usually competes in the optimist category.

Another trainee, Muhammad Ahda Jamil, 12, of Taman Cahaya Masai, took up the sport when he was seven, after his elder sister encouraged him.

"If you know how to keep your balance despite the strong wind and choppy water, you are already great. I fell into the sea many times during my initial stage of training," he said.

Muhammad has won two medals in 30 tournaments in the past six years. He takes part in the optimist category.

Abdul Aziz Hashim, 62, a retired navy man, is one of the association's four trainers. He had trained others in Pahang for four years, while this is his eighth year in Johor. Over the years, he has trained more than 200 people.

Previously, he said, the training ground in Johor was at Tanjung Langsat, but the coastal area there was quite muddy.

"We moved to Tanjung Leman which is sandy and provides a real testing ground for tournaments because it is facing the open sea.

"Over here, we go for training even when the weather is bad because we have to let the trainees familiarise themselves with the actual situation during competition, especially when overseas," he said.

During stormy weather, Abdul Aziz said, training may be limited to inland areas where lessons on theory are taught.

Of 54 trainees, 43 of them are in the optimist category, four each in the laser and international categories, and three in the windsurfing category.

The Johor Yachting Association was established in 2003 after registering with the Malaysia Sports Commission.

It provides a platform for students to excel in the sport and join tournaments at both national and international levels.

NUSANTARA Prima's residential development in Gelang Patah is set to provide quality, modern living at an affordable price.

Located within the nexus of the Iskandar Malaysia development, the housing area, comprising double-storey, cluster and terrace homes, is located 24km from Johor Baru and 28km from the nearest exit to Singapore.

Developer Denia Development Sdn Bhd expects the freehold properties -- which for Bumiputeras, is priced from RM323,300 for the Rivonia cluster homes and from RM227,632 for the Artemis double-storey terrace homes -- to be snapped up by locals.

"This is the price we expect to be found attractive by potential local buyers," said chief executive officer Zamani Kassim. "For foreign buyers, most of whom would be Singaporeans, their price range is usually RM500,000 and above."

There are five phases in all, and 50 per cent of the houses have already been sold.

The houses are built to provide a spacious atmosphere, with high ceilings and large master bedrooms.

Zamani said all amenities have been provided to ensure that buyers will enjoy luxury at such a price.

"Our showhouses have yet to be completed, but people are already buying in droves. I believe this is because of the strategic location of Nusantara Prima," he said.

Among current promotions available for the Rivonia and Artemis houses are free auto-gate and alarm systems.

"You can consider it as an incentive. We want people to live comfortably, and to make luxury affordable," said Zamani.

For more information about the houses , call 07-510 1288 or visit the Denia Development office at Taman Nusantara, Jalan Ulu Choh, Gelang Patah.
