Cradle Fund sees growth in quality applicants

Posted: 09 Oct 2011 11:11 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, a commercial grant provider under the Finance Ministry's purview, has seen a steady inflow of quality applicants this year.

This is in line with the successful industry and technopreneur outreach strategy via the info talks and application clinics that Cradle runs on a regular basis, both independently, in collaboration with other organisations.

"It is also attributed to active appearances in speaking slots at industry events," the company said in a statement today.

To date, it has approved 459 catalyst cradle investment programme (CIP) and 52 CIP 500 grants.

"Cradle's grant recipients have achieved 55 per cent commercialisation rate for their innovations, the highest in Malaysia and one of the highest worldwide.

"This augurs well for our cradle ultimate goal to develop a world-class technopreneurship ecosystem in this country and help transform our national economy into a high-income innovation economy by developing the potential of our home-grown technopreneurs to global level," said Cradle Fund chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan. -- BERNAMA

Killer "rat fever' worries Kerala

Posted: 09 Oct 2011 10:45 PM PDT

CHENNAI: At least 600 suspected cases of "rat fever" were reported in Kerala with close to 100 deaths this year as post-monsoon diseases threaten the state.

Health authorities are on high alert, mainly in northern Kerala, to tackle the outbreak of rat fever (leptospirosis), normally transmitted by rat urine or infected animals.

"It is a zoonotic disease, usually spread by animals like rats and people become victims. Suspected cases of rat fever has increased because of the long, two-to-three month monsoon, we had here.

"So far we have confirmed five deaths due to rat fever in Kozhikode," Dr P.K. Mohanan, Kozhikode district medical officer told Bernama.

According to Mohanan, patients suffer from multiple symptoms such as high fever, internal bleeding, liver damage and muscle pain, similar to dengue or cholera, which makes it difficult to isolate the disease.

Officials said most of the patients, aged above 40 years, were sanitation and waste disposal services workers, who were easily exposed to the bacteria.

The touristy state is also grappling with the cases of cholera and typhoid -- all prevalent as a result of the rainy season. -- BERNAMA

RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan

2010/11/01
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: The health ministry has allocated RM1.1 million to the Kelantan state government to implement rural water development projects to ensure people living in rural areas receive clean and adequate water supply.

Deputy health minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Shirlin said the projects consist of
controlled wells, feed gravity system as well as piped connection from Syarikat
Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

"The allocation is channelled to state health department to implement the projects," she said after attending the handing-over of the projects to Sungai

Terah residents here.

She said to date, Kelantan received 84.7 per cent of clean water supply
encompassing 223,115 households.

Only 40,212 households have yet to have clean water supplied by the ministry or
by AKSB. She expressed hopes that Gua Musang will receive 100 per cent water supply as soon as possible. To ensure the water is safe for consumption, she adviced residents to follow a few simple rules, namely:

  • Boil water before drinking;
  • The wells and feed gravity system need to be chlorinated periodically to kill off bacteria and reduce contamination risk; and
  • Trees or plants near water catchment areas should not be cut down to prevent the water source from drying up.

She also said this year, Kelantan has recorded six cholera, 28 typhoid and 2,168

food poisoning cases to date.

"These diseases still pose a risk to rural folk," she said.

Badminton: Call to slash Rexy's salary

Posted: 09 Oct 2011 05:09 PM PDT

REXY MAINAKY

REXY MAINAKY

NATIONAL Sports Council (NSC) director Datuk Zolkples Embong has asked the BA of Malaysia (BAM) to slash the salary of Rexy Mainaky after he had been redesignated as the national women's doubles and mixed doubles chief coach last month.

Zolkples said Rexy used to be in charge of the entire national doubles squad but now he has less responsibilities and fewer pairs to look after, so the salary review is rational.

Rexy, hired as the men's doubles coach in 2005, was given additional responsibility as the chief coach of the doubles in 2007 after Yap Kim Hock was not retained as the national team's chief coach then.

The bipartite contracts of the national coaches give NSC the authority to ask for a review from the national sports associations (NSAs) as the council pays a portion of the coaches' salaries.

Zolkples had raised the matter during the joint committee meeting (JKKK) with BAM on Thursday and he stated that NSC will act on the feedback from the national body.

"I have asked BAM to review the salary of Rexy Mainaky as he is now the women's doubles and mixed doubles chief coach. This is because he has less responsibilities and fewer pairs to handle compared to his previous position as the national chief doubles coach," said Zolkples.

"I have asked them to review the salary but BAM officials have informed me that Rexy's contract had just been signed in May and it will be hard to slash his salary.

"We will wait for BAM's feedback on the matter before deciding on whether to reduce our portion of the salary.

"I have also suggested to them to include a clause where the KPI (Key Performance Index) will be implemented and salary reduction can also happen when a coach is redesignated with lesser responsibilities."

BAM secretary Ng Chin Chai said there would not be a review for now as Rexy's contract is barely six months old but stated he will discuss the matter with NSC officials further.

"We are not reviewing Rexy's salary as the contract is still new. We need to have more discussions with NSC officials and provide more details about Rexy's responsibilities," said Chin Chai.

"There is a possibility the matter will be discussed during the executive committee meeting (on Saturday) as the chairman of the finance committee (Peter Yeow) will be present.

"We definitely welcome the suggestion that future contracts should have a clause on salary reduction and increment based on performance."

Based on the current contract offered by BAM, the association and the coach can end the contract by mutual consent by giving three months' notice but there is no clause stressing the importance of a performance-based salary package.

Although Zolkples' call may not affect the coaches immediately, it is a strong message to them regarding their work ethics and the performances of their charges will determine their future, specifically financial gains from the NSAs.

JASMINE Lai Pui Yee (back) and Kam Ling Kar clinched the gold in the 10-metre platform synchro Open discipline in Jakarta yesterday.

JASMINE Lai Pui Yee (back) and Kam Ling Kar clinched the gold in the 10-metre platform synchro Open discipline in Jakarta yesterday.

JASMINE Lai Pui Yee is destined for glory at next month's Indonesia Sea Games after another splashing display at the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships in Jakarta yesterday.

Pui Yee was again in near-perfect form as the 16-year-old won the women's 10-metre platform synchro Open with Kam Ling Kar ahead of Macau's I Teng-Cheong Pui Man and a Thai pair. The Ipoh-born Pui Yee went on to grab a second gold medal in the girls' 10m platform individual Group A (16-18) final ahead of Ling Kar.

Jasmine amassed 369.10 points, followed by Ling Kar (339.20) and Japan's Yuka Kobayashi (320.15) for her first individual title in the championships.

She and Lin Kar won the women's 3m springboard synchro open final on Friday and the clean sweep in the synchro events should boost their confidence and give them the edge over their rivals at the Sea Games.

A confident Pui Yee said she wants to continue her winning ways at the Sea Games after two successful international outings.

"I want to make it a memorable affair in my first Sea Games. As for the events, our coach has not decided yet as he wants to gauge our performance in training and competition before deciding," said Pui Yee when contacted in Jakarta yesterday.

"However, Ling Kar and I will be ready as we trained for both disciplines (platform and springboard). The platform individual title is my second after my victory at the recent Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational meet in Wellington."

Pui Yee and Ling Kar also made their presence felt at last month's Diving Asia Cup, where they won silver behind China in the platform synchro discipline.

Malaysia picked up three more silver medals through Loh Jiayi (girls 10m platform Group B -- 14-15), Muhd Nazreen (boys' 10m platform Group C -- 12-13) and Adrian Chan (boys' 10m platform Group A -- 16-17).

The national team, comprising eight divers (five elite and three back-up), have won five gold, eight silver and one bronze with one day of competition left.
