'Along' found dead with slash wounds at kopitiam

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 11:10 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: A man, believed to an 'along' (loan shark), was found dead with slash wounds on his body in the washroom of a kopitiam-cum-karaoke outlet at Petaling Jaya Commercial City (PJCC), here, yesterday.

The body of Phua Wei Loon, 25, was found lying on the floor and covered with blood by a friend at about 9.30pm when he went looking for him after he became worried when the victim did not respond to his calls.

Phua, from Banting, had gone to the outlet to meet the owner for the purpose of collecting a loan repayment.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said police did not dismiss the possibility that a fight could have ensued between the outlet owner and Phua before the latter was killed.

He said police were looking for the owner who was now linked to the murder as the outlet was not open for business as usual yesterday. Police also believe that there could have been more than one assailant involved.

Arjunaidi said the victim had been slashed with a sharp object but the weapon was not found at the scene.

The victim's body was sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. -- BERNAMA

Army surrounds China monastery after monk's death

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 11:07 PM PDT

BEIJING: Soldiers and police on Tuesday surrounded a monastery in southwest China where a Tibetan monk set himself on fire and died, cutting off power, water and food to around 100 people inside, witnesses said.

Foreigners were barred from travelling to the area in Sichuan province's Daofu county, near Tibet, where the 29-year-old set himself on fire on Monday in an apparent protest, local people told AFP by telephone.

"There are at least 1,000 soldiers and police guarding the monastery and about 100 monks inside," one monk said from inside the monastery.

"The power and water have been cut off for days, and we have no food supplies coming in."

The London-based Free Tibet rights group said the monk, Tsewang Norbu from the Nyitso monastery, set himself on fire after drinking petrol and spraying himself with the flammable liquid.

He was heard calling out "We Tibetan people want freedom", "Long live the Dalai Lama", and "Let the Dalai Lama return to Tibet" before he died, the group said.

Sichuan has a large population of ethnic Tibetans, many of whom object to what they say is repressive Chinese rule — a claim Beijing denies. The region has experienced several bouts of unrest over the past few years.

It was the second reported self-immolation this year in this area of Sichuan, where many monks revere the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, who fled China in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

In March, a young monk called Phuntsog set himself on fire and died near Kirti Monastery in Aba county, around 200 kilometres (124 miles) from Daofu, in apparent protest against the government.

Hotel and restaurant owners in Daofu said there was a heavy army and police presence in the city, and they were not accepting foreigners.

"There are many soldiers and police on the streets, they have surrounded the monastery and the government headquarters," said a hotel owner, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A restaurant owner said the police and army had set up roadblocks around the county and were checking every vehicle that approached the government headquarters and the monastery.

An official at the Daofu government office refused to comment. -- AFP

The Dow Jones Industrial Average leaped 213.88 points (1.90 per cent) to finish at 11,482.90. The broader SandP 500 was up 25.68 points (2.18 per cent) at 1,204.49, and the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite gained 47.22 points (1.88 per cent) to 2,555.20. After a roller-coaster week dominated by US and European public debt problems, Wall Street bulls were ready to take the markets higher. "It is too soon to say that a bottom is in place, but the market is obviously showing encouraging signs that the worst of the selling is behind us," said Scott Marcouiller at Wells Fargo Advisors. Stocks piled up gains "as investors seek bargains following three weeks of losses," he added. It was the third winning session for Wall Street, returning the indices to above the levels they held on August 5 just before Standard and Poor's downgraded the US credit rating, sending global markets into a tailspin. "The market should continue to be fairly volatile but certainly the trend is looking more promising than it did in the last couple of weeks," said Andrew Fitzpatrick, at Hinsdale Associates. Investors brushed off a dismal manufacturing report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Its manufacturing index reading for New York state slumped 3.8 points in August from July, to negative 7.7, the third straight month in negative territory. "A plethora of MandA news is helping overshadow an unexpected drop in a read on manufacturing activity in New York," Charles Schwab analysts said. Internet giant Google unveiled its largest acquisition to date, announcing a deal to buy US handset maker Motorola Mobility for US$12.5 billion. Google will pay US$40.00 per share in cash, a 63 per cent premium over its closing price Friday. Google fell 1.10 per cent to US$557.55; MM skyrocketed 55.8 per cent to US$38.12. Bank of America said it would sell its US$8.6 billion credit card portfolio in Canada to TD Bank Group and would exit its credit card businesses in Britain and Ireland. BofA soared 7.9 per cent to US$7.76. Pfizer leaped 2.7 per cent to US$18.34 after it won a patent-infringement case in a US court against Israeli rival Teva Pharmaceuticals. The court ruling prevents Teva from making a generic form of Viagra until October 2019. The commitment to order a minimum of 106 A320 Family aircraft includes 78 A320neo jets, making Qantas the latest airline to select the world's best selling single-aisle aircraft. "We are delighted to be investing in Airbus' fuel efficient A320 Family, including the new A320neo as part of Qantas' international transformation plan and Jetstar's pan-Asian expansion," Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said in a statement issued by Airbus today. "The A320 Family's outstanding operational efficiency and comfort, paired with its environmental credentials, make it the right choice for Qantas." The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family to enter service in 2015. It incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel and CO2 emission savings. In parallel with this new order, Qantas has decided to adapt deliveries of the last six of its twenty A380s to the airline's new business plan. This affects deliveries after 2013. At present, Qantas'A380 fleet stands at ten, making the carrier the third largest A380 operator worldwide. A320 Family orders to date already exceed 7,800, reaffirming its position as the world's best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. To date over 4,700 have been delivered to over 330 customers and operators worldwide. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the existing A320 models while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. Airbus has received more than 1,200 A320neo orders and commitments since its launch just nine months ago, in December 2010. - Bernama Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by Used Car Search.

Fabregas completes Barca move

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has completed his move to Barcelona by signing a five-year contract with his boyhood club, the Spanish giants confirmed yesterday.

"Cesc has finally joined FC Barcelona, after signing a contract for the next five seasons. His buyout clause will be ?200 million (RM800 million)," the club said in a statement on its website.

The 24-year-old earlier underwent a medical, and is to be presented to the media at the Nou Camp.

Arsenal announced on Sunday that they had finally agreed a deal with Barcelona for the transfer of Fabregas to the Spanish and European champions.

Barcelona confirmed the deal which is estimated to be worth ?36-40 million.

The deal, which brings to an end a transfer saga which began last year, will take Fabregas back to the club which he left as a 16-year-old in 2003.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he was sorry to let the player go.

"We have been clear that we didn't want Cesc to leave and that remains the case," said Wenger on Sunday.

"However, we understand Cesc's desire to move to his home town club and have now accepted an offer from Barcelona.

We thank Cesc for his contribution at Arsenal and wish him future success."
The midfielder spent eight years at Arsenal and made 303 appearances, scoring 57 goals in all competitions. — AFP

Badminton: Chong Wei the saving grace

LEE Chong Wei aside, it was yet another World Championships which will go down in the record books as a failure for Malaysia.

Chong Wei did extremely well to keep Malaysian interest at London's Wembley Arena alive until the final day but how long more can the World No 1 shoulder the burden alone?

The fact that he was the only national player to make the semi-final stage is alarming, considering the support badminton enjoys in Malaysia.

What should worry the BA of Malaysia even more is the emergence of several other nations in the World Championships with the likes of Japan, Taiwan and India slowly but surely getting a grip on the game. Taiwan had a representative in the women's singles final while India and Japan had a pair in the mixed doubles and women's doubles semi-finals respectively.

Add to that China's huge talent base and the strength of South Korea, Denmark and Indonesia and Malaysia are indeed treading on thin ice.

Some might argue that other than China, the other major nations didn't do well in London but that isn't the point.

BAM has to agree that Malaysia, traditionally, hopes for either the men's singles or doubles to deliver but the situation now is that only Chong Wei can be relied on to deliver but he is 29 and, at the most, can only be counted on for the Olympics next year and the 2013 World Championships.

The other singles players in the elite and back-up programmes don't inspire confidence while the doubles are headed the same way.

In fact, BAM should be even more concerned about the men's doubles for this has always been Malaysia's strength on the world stage but with Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong highly inconsistent and the other pairs struggling to stamp a mark, the future looks bleak.

Of immediate concern are the Olympics and BAM doesn't seem to have any other choice but to hope that Kien Keat-Boon Heong will shrug off whatever is ailing them and focus on winning a medal -- at this stage any colour will do -- in London.

However, BAM must not wait until the Olympics are over before focusing on the Rio de Janeiro edition.

The World Championships showed that other nations have already started developing their players and Malaysia must not be left behind.

As for Chong Wei, the agony of defeat after being just one point away from the world title was bitter but as the World No 1 said, it isn't the end of the world.

His quality cannot be questioned and having finished second to Lin Dan in three major championships now, he must vow to win the Olympics and World Championships once before retiring.

He has to for the future doesn't look bright for Malaysian badminton after that unless efforts start immediately to keep the game on track.

SHARING AND CARING

The 'Semaian Kasih' programme brings cheer to special students at a Pontian primary school

ALISYYA Zaidi used to be up and about filled with boundless energy like any
other child her age, until a rare illness rendered her immobile two years ago.

Now, the 11-year-old needs to be helped by schoolmates and teachers to walk and move from one place to another in her classroom.

Her father, Zaidi Abu Bakar, 41, said his third of four daughters had led a normal childhood until the mysterious disease affected the movement of her legs.

"Doctors told me only two other people in Johor had contracted the same disease as Alisyya's. It is a rare nervous system disease which affects the movement of legs. Other than that, she is normal.

"She is among the brightest pupils in her class," said Zaidi after receiving a wheelchair contribution from students and lecturers of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Temenggong Ibrahim (IPGKTI) Johor Baru during the institute's annual Semaian Kasih charity programme on Aug 9.

The Semaian Kasih programme, which is now in its second year, was held at Alisyya's school, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Yu Ming 2 in Pekan Nanas, Pontian.

A group of 20 undergraduates from IPGKTI, who are all majoring in special education, spent time with Alisyya and 15 other disabled pupils who are under SJKC Yu Ming's special education unit.

Besides leading the children to a fun dance-aerobic session, the undergraduates, who are all majoring in special education degree, sang songs, played games and demonstrated foot reflexology methods on the pupils.

The 16 disabled pupils at the school comprise those with learning disabilities, Down's Syndrome and autism.

IPGKTI second-year undergraduate, Mohd Amirul Hafiz Mohd Yusof, 21, had a good time getting to know the disabled children and hoped to meet them again in the future.

"They are sweet children and they are very smart. Programmes like this helps me to get used to being with these special children."

Mohd Amirul Hafiz, led his fellow course mates, also gave foot massages for the children.

He said reflexology was recommended for disabled pupils as it helped to stimulate blood circulation, thus promoting overall wellbeing.

"I enjoy being with the disabled children as they are unlike regular children. It takes a lot of patience to teach them. We must use a soft approach to gain their trust," said Mohd Amirul, who has another three and a-half-years before completing his degree in special education.

Meanwhile, IPGKTI education department head, Dr Hilmi Ahmad Shaghir said that lecturers and students launched a last-minute donation drive two months ago, after finding out about Alisyya's plight from fellow lecturers.

"We launched the drive during our assembly, and managed to gather RM1,000 immediately.

"The money was used to buy a wheelchair for Alisyya and food contributions for the other disabled children at SJKC Yu Ming 2."

Hilmi said last year's Semaian Kasih programme was held at SK Bandar T6, Kluang (correct), in which a disabled pupil also received a wheelchair.

Hilmi said the Semaian Kasih programme was also intended to train undergraduates on ways of handling disabled children, which is an integral part of their practical course work.

SKJC Yu Ming 2 headmistress, Yeo Kim Lan was grateful for IPGKTI for the contributions, which coincided with the month of Ramadan.

"Lecturers from IPGKTI have come to the school on many occasions previously, either as invigilators or for programmes. It was then that they noticed Alisyya's disability. Yeo said Alisyya's mother Hamidah Abdul Hamid, 40, would drop off daughter at school everyday, while her father Zaidi fetched her after school.

ALISYYA Zaidi (correct) used to be up and about in boundless energy like any other child her age until a rare nervous system illness rendered her immobile two years ago.

"Her parents often worried about their daughter's disability and whether it would affect her learning.

"But even before she received the wheelchair, the teachers and pupils would help Alisyya to go to the canteen or toilet."

Yeo said the Semaian Kasih programme has also brought a lot of cheer to the disabled pupils, as they enjoyed taking part in the aerobics and getting free massages from the IPGKTI undergraduates.

Meanwhile, Zaidi, who works at the BMW parts distribution centre in Port of Tanjung Pelepas said he was grateful for the new wheelchair he received from IPGKTI as it would enable Alisyya to move more easily whenever she wanted to go out to meet her friends.

"She may not be able to walk, but she could now move about better at school or whenever she wants to go out to play with her friends," said Zaidi.
