Haj pilgrims encouraged to pay penalty at counters

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:17 PM PDT

MECCA: Haj pilgrims are encouraged to pay for the 'dam' (penalty) and 'korban' (sacrifice) at Tabung Haji (TH) financial counters to avoid any confusion regarding these obligations.

TH Guidance Operations Manager Nukman Fadzil said the process of slaughtering sacrfice animals and penalty payments must be carried out according to religious requirements.

He said pilgrims could pay for the penalty themselves or find the livestock for slaughter, but they must meet various criteria in terms of value, size and age of the livestock.

"Our concern is that if the penalty is paid to other quarters, questions may arise on the trustworthiness of the person who performs the dam," he told Tabung Haji media personnel, here.

He said TH, with the cooperation of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), would take responsibility over the penalty and sacrifice to ensure the payment of the haj penalty and slaughter were smoothly implemented.

He added that TH had a special group of personnel who were assigned to ensure that there was sufficient livestock, and that the slaughtered meat was distributed to those who were eligible. -- BERNAMA

Malaysia, Australia stand by refugee swap deal

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 09:17 PM PDT

PERTH: Australia and Malaysia affirmed their commitment to a refugee swap deal Thursday despite a political stalemate in Canberra that has left it in limbo.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak met his Australian counterpart Julia Gillard on the sidelines of a Commonwealth summit in Perth to discuss the so-called "Malaysia Solution" agreed in May.

Under the plan Australia was to send 800 boatpeople to Malaysia in exchange for 4,000 of the Southeast Asian nation's registered refugees in what was intended to be a deterrent to people-smugglers.

But the swap was shelved this month after the High Court struck it down and opposition lawmakers refused to back legal amendments to allow it to proceed.

A spokeswoman for Gillard said the two leaders had "agreed on the importance of regional solutions to the challenge of irregular migration".

"Both prime ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the Malaysia-Australia transfer agreement as an innovative and effective approach to combatting people smuggling," the spokeswoman said.

Although the High Court rejected the deal, Gillard believes it could still be revived if opposition lawmakers agree to migration law amendments, which would then have to pass the left-leaning Greens-dominated upper house.

Such an outcome is seen as unlikely, and Canberra has committed to accepting the 4,000 refugees from Malaysia regardless of whether the deal proceeds.

Najib had earlier warned that international cooperation was the only way to combat the region's people-smuggling problems and refused to back down on his deal with Australia.

"Merely announcing that the arrangement was being discussed contributed to a 50 percent fall in the number of boatpeople heading to Australia in the first half of this year," he wrote in an editorial for Australian newspapers.

"I believe that, once up and running, it would have had a serious impact on the exploitative actions of people smugglers." The Malaysian premier said it would be "easy to give up, to tell ourselves that we tried but the problem was too big, too politically difficult to deal with". "The people-smuggling would go on, the boats would continue to sail.

Heartless traffickers would continue to take everything from desperate people — their money, their dignity and, all too often, their lives," he said.

Najib said Malaysia would continue to work with Australia and other nations
"to find new ways of stopping the traffickers for good". Despite arriving in relatively small numbers by global standards asylum-seekers are a thorny political issue in Australia and it has a mandatory detention policy for refugees arriving by boat. - AFP

Palm oil labelling rejection good news: Najib

PERTH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today that the rejection of the proposal for compulsory palm oil labelling by the Australian government, is very much welcomed, especially for Malaysia's oil palm industry.

"The Australian government is not supporting the proposal for compulsory palm oil labelling," he told the Malaysian media on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) here today.

"This is a very happy decision for the oil palm industry," said Najib, who arrived late last night to attend the three-day meeting.

It was reported earlier that the Australian government would oppose the anti-trade bill which has the support of the Liberal-National Party coalition for the compulsory palm-oil labelling, as it went against the country's obligation to the World Trade Organisation(WTO).

Themed, "Building National Resilience, Building Global Resilience", CHOGM 2011 will be officially declared open by Queen Elizabeth II on Friday -- BERNAMA

Golf: Vijay looking for some Malaysian magic

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:23 PM PDT

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak shares a light moment with Vijay Singh (left) and CIMB chief executive officer Datuk Seri Nazir Razak at the Mines Resort and Golf Club yesterday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak shares a light moment with Vijay Singh (left) and CIMB chief executive officer Datuk Seri Nazir Razak at the Mines Resort and Golf Club yesterday.

IT has been a decade since Vijay Singh last played in Malaysia but his love for the country has changed little as he prepares to make his debut at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic today.

The Fijian has a Malaysian wife and began his career in Malaysia, plying his trade in Sabah and Sarawak in the mid-1980s and winning the 1984 Malaysian PGA Championship.

Malaysia was the launchpad of many great victories in the following years but playing opportunities here have been limited due to his busy US PGA Tour schedule and a succession of knee and back injuries over the past two years.

The three-time major winner's last appearance here was in 2001, when he won his second Malaysian Open title at Saujana in Subang. He was due to play at the 2008 Iskandar Johor Open only to pull out after suffering an injury.

Now that his injury woes are behind him, Vijay is hoping some of the Malaysian magic which worked wonders for him in the past will help him get back on his feet.

"It's been a while since I've been back here to play. I've had good times here and my wife is from here. Malaysia has been a special place in my life and I've got family here.

"I'm comfortable with the food, understand a bit of the language and it always gives me a lot of enthusiasm to play here. I just feel comfortable here, except for the weather which is a bit hot, but you get used to that," said Vijay, 48, after his practice round at the Mines Resort yesterday.

Currently 58th on the Official World Golf Ranking, Vijay has not won a tournament since the 2008 Deutsche Bank Championship.

"I'm looking forward to playing here. I've got a good feeling about it, so we'll see what happens."

Golf: Shaaban gunning for top-20 finish

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:17 PM PDT

Asian Tour No 1 Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia and Jeev Milkha Singh (inset) are looking for a change in luck at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic which starts today.

Asian Tour No 1 Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia and Jeev Milkha Singh (inset) are looking for a change in luck at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic which starts today.

SHAABAN Hussin propped up the field last year at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic but has vowed to avoid coming in last again when this year's tournament tees off today.

Despite his troubles last year at the Mines Resort and Golf Club, Shaaban still walked away with a cool US$50,000 (RM156,000).

This time though the 23-year-old, who earned his spot after winning the national qualifier at the Mines Resort last month, has set an ambitious target of finishing in the top-20 in a field which boasts five major championship winners and some of Asia's best golfers.

"I'm very happy to be playing in my second year. I've been preparing very well for this week. I target a top-10 or top-20 this week.

"I just need to carry that form into this week. But the course set up then is different compared to the current set up. I don't think this is a very difficult course and will need to take advantage of that," said Shaaban, who got used to the course after playing in yesterday's Pro-Am.

Unlike last year, Shaaban is not the only Malaysian in the field with Danny Chia, the leading Malaysian on the Asian Tour Order of Merit at 48th, providing him company.

"There's definitely less pressure with Danny in the field. At least the spotlight is not constantly on me. I even have a partner to train with," said Shaaban, who has missed four cuts with one retirement in nine Asian Tour events this year.

"I don't want to be last again. Like I said a top-20 will be a reasonable result. I'm quite confident I can play well this week.

"I've spent a lot of time practising on my putting because it will come down to putting.

"I've been playing quite well this year on the Asian Tour and I think the experience of playing in this event last year helped with my performance.

"I'll try my best to play lower than 10-under this week. I think the winning score will be about 18-under."
