Rajagobal not satisfied with team's performance

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 11:24 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian football coach K.Rajagobal wants his team to get over their 0-4 defeat to Arsenal in a friendly last night to be ready for their meeting with Singapore in the second round World Cup 2014 qualifying match on July 23.

Although he accepted the result, Rajagobal was unhappy about the Malaysians' "bland" style of play and their nervousness.

"Arsenal are a team on a different level, and I accept the defeat, but I am not satisfied with the way we played. Our players seem nervous," he told a press conference after the match.

"They should scrap this tendency of being nervous when facing well-known players if they are to perform better in our next international friendly (against Liverpool on Saturday)," Rajagobal said.

Arsenal's goals were scored by Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Carlos Vela and Thomas Rosicky.

"I will meet the players and inspire them to do better next time. I hope we can learn from the Arsenal match," he said.

Asked on his decision to select third goalkeeper Mohd Nasril Mat Nourdin for the match, Rajagobal said it was to give him experience so that he would be ready to step in if the other two custodians were injured in future.

"I rarely give him the chance to play, so this was a chance for him to show his best moves," the Malaysian coach said.

Mohd Nasril was replaced by first goalie Khairul Fahmi Che Mat in the second half.

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Malaysia showed character in playing a good and fair game.

Despite the defeat, he believed that the Malaysian team can improve their performance by playing in more international matches.

"Although they miss chances, I think Malaysian team were motivated and they were well organised. They can improve and were already impressing me," he said.

RM70m for phase 2 of Sibu flood mitigation project

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 11:00 PM PDT

SIBU: A sum of RM70 million has been allocated under the Tenth Malaysia Plan for the second phase of the Sibu flood mitigation project.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah said an appointed consultant was currently studying its design and components.

"The tender is expected to be called this September," he told a news conference after attending a briefing on the work progress of the first phase, here, today.

He said among its main components was raising the level of several more roads to act as water levees and the construction of two more flood-water pumping stations.

On the first phase work, Uggah said it was now 67.8 per cent done with only a 0.27 per cent delay due to problems in shifting electricity and telephone line poles belonging to Telekom Malaysia and Sarawak Energy Berhad.

He said the first phase was expected to be completed as scheduled in early February next year.

On plans to dredge Rajang River at its most critical bottlenecks because of sendimentation, he said the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) was still studying the matter.

"The DID is going to implement the first plan costing RM2 million at Pulau Kerto and it is still coming up with the design.

"It has appointed a consortium comprising Dwimula Bina Sdn Bhd, Hock Seng Lee Bhd and Pembinaan Nasional Sdn Bhd for this," he said, adding that the tender was expected to be called by the middle of this month.

He also said that RM3 million had been allocated to build flood-control gates and improve the drainage system in the Sungai Bidut areas to help vegetable farmers overcome the seasonal floods due to the king tide coupled with heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of Rajang River.

"All these indicate that the Barisan Nasional government is committed to solving or at least minimising the flood problems faced by the people.

"We are doing what we can according to our capacity and not because we are motivated by any state or general election," he said.-- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Substantive swings produced two key by-election victories for the Barisan Nasional tonight.

BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes.

In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes.

BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly.

The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election.

In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes.

Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader.

Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990.

"The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight.

Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area.

The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight.

Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results.

Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election.

The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages.

Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008.

In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said.

"My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. His death on Oct 9 had led to the by-election.

UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course

By Hanif Miswan

single
SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of
them.

He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October.

The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers.

CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy.

Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent.

His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world.

He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10).

"It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21.

Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers".

The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant.

"CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."

"For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added.

The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English.

Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

Biedermann, Britta lead Europe's charge

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 09:58 AM PDT

PARIS: Germany's Paul Biedermann and Britta Steffen will lead Europe's challenge at the World Championships alongside a talented French contingent.

Biedermann, 24, claimed the 200m and 400m freestyle double in Rome two years ago in world record times, while Britta also claimed a record-breaking double over the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Both, however, could be hard-pressed to repeat those heroics as Britta struggled last year with sinus problems which she will hope are now behind her as she prepares for the 2012 Olympics in London.

The 27-year-old returned to action last November but had to settle for two bronze medals at the European short-course championships in Eindhoven.

Biedermann won the 200m at the European long-course championships last year but lost the 400m to Yannick Agnel as the French topped the medals table with a record haul including double gold for sprinter Frederick Bousquet.

The French swimmers will be hopeful of making a similar splash in Shanghai.

Bousquet's chances in the 50m freestyle could depend on whether his great rival -- Olympic and world champion Cesar Cielo of Brazil -- can compete after testing positive for a banned diuretic.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport is hoping to reach a decision on Cielo's case before the Shanghai meet.

Bousquet has never beaten the South American over the distance but this year clocked his top time 21.78s, the second best time of 2011 behind Cielo (21.66).

Olympic champion Alain Bernard will be bidding for the 100m freestyle title won by Cielo in 2009, with Agnel targeting the 200m and 400m freestyle; Sebastien Rouault is contesting the 800m and 1500m and Camille Lacourt 50m and 100m backstroke.

Hungary's Laszlo Cseh will be looking to make up for the disappointment two years ago when sickness prevented him performing his best in the 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley.

Britain, meanwhile, are looking to lay the groundwork for London 2012, with a team including 400m and 800m Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington.

In the 400m, Rebecca will be bidding to topple Italy's Federica Pelligrini, who is also the defending champion over 200m and world record holder over both distances.

Women's world 100m backstroke champion Gemma Spofforth and men's 50m backstroke title-holder Liam Tancock are also among the British team.

"These World Championships have added importance as they provide a qualification opportunity for the relays for the London 2012 Olympics," said British national performance director Michael Scott.

"Any World Championships is an important event and marker but the one prior to an Olympic year is a key measure that gives us a strong indication of where we are."

Swedish veteran Therese Alshammar will be competing in the women's 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly as Denmark's Lotte Friis will be looking to add to her 800m and 1500m double at the Europeans.

Russia's Yuliya Efimova is targeting the 50m and 100m breaststroke double, while the Russian men are traditionally strong in the relays. -- AFP

Syafiq and Jacqueline best among Asians

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 09:58 AM PDT

SYAFIQ Ridhwan and newly promoted elite bowler Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore are the highest ranked Asians on the European Bowling Tour (EBT) men's and women's ranking lists respectively.

Syafiq, who finished second in the World Tour's Brunswick Euro Challenge in March and 12th in the recent San Marino Open, is ranked eighth among the men with 310 points.

Former Ankara Open champion Adrian Ang is 14th with 225 points while newly crowned San Marino Open winner Alex Liew is 25th on 150.

Finland's Osku Palermaa leads the standings with 590 points from seven events ahead of Denmark's Thomas Larsen (541) and compatriot Mika Koivuniemi (478).

In the women's ranking list, Jacqueline, a former Malaysia Games champion, is 13th with 255 points from two events. The youngster turned on a commendable performance to finish 13th in San Marino.

Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi is the second highest ranked Malaysian with 177 points ahead of Esther Cheah (26th -- 150) and Siti Shazwani Ahmad Suhaimi (37th -- 105).

Denmark's Mai Ginge Jensen leads with 492 points followed by Sweden's Joline Persson Planefors (481) and the Netherlands' Wendy Kok (389).

"Our senior and junior bowlers are making steady progress in Europe. This is a good sign for things to come," said team manager Cheah Ban Cheng yesterday.

"But doing well in Europe will not mean anything if they fail in upcoming tournaments. They need to be consistent ahead of the Women's World Championships and the Indonesia Sea Games."

On Liew's victory in San Marino, Ban Cheng said the veteran is hungry for more.

The 10-member Malaysian squad were due to start their campaign in the City of Barcelona Trophy late yesterday. -- AJITPAL SINGH

Thirty-four troupes vie for honours at the seventh Johor Ghazal Open competition

FOR three consecutive days, 1,000 eager fans daily filled the Dewan Orang Ramai in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat to watch the seventh Johor Ghazal Open competition.

Organised by the Johor Heritage Foundation, the event had 34 ghazal groups competing in the primary, secondary, open and harapan (aspiration) categories on the first and second day.

Four groups were selected from each category to take part in the finals on the third day.

Fans came from Johor, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and as far as Kelantan to watch and listen.

The "modern" ghazal ensemble, as popularised by the late Col Musa Yusof, better known as Pak Lomak, consists of seven unplugged instruments -- the gambus (lute), guitar, violin, harmonium, tabla, tambourine and maracas.

A male and a female vocalist make it nine in the ensemble.

"This year's competition is challenging and interesting as the musicians, particularly the younger set, have introduced dynamics, off-beat rhythms and vibratos to their arrangements," said Johor Heritage Foundation deputy music director Omar Taib, who is also one of the competition's five judges.

He praised the singers whom he said were soothing to the ear as well as articulate

"Some of them could hit and hold the high notes with full expression. That really impressed the judges.

"Some could sing in a melismatic sequence for almost half-a-minute, which wowed the audience," said Omar, who is a musician, composer and arranger.

Melisma is the expressive technique of singing several notes to one syllable.

Three "Trofi Pusingan Keluarga Pak Lomak" (Pak Lomak Family Challenge Trophy) were reserved for the best in song.

Two would go to the best female and male vocalists, and the third to best ghazal song composition.

Only those in the open category are eligible to compete for the last trophy. They are each required to present an original song composition, an original instrumental composition and one selected song.

Contestants in the other three categories are required to perform only two songs of their choice.

The foundation's own Ghazal Melayu Unit Pengembangan YWJ combined electronic instruments such as electric guitars, synthesisers and drums with the traditional instruments of the ghazal.

The group, led by Mohd Shah Othman, performed contemporary and traditional ghazal numbers to an excited audience awaiting the final results.

The group also played instrumental numbers and backed-up the young dancers from Sanggar Pengembangan Warisan Johor.

"It was a show well worth watching," said Mohd Sofi Hashim, a ghazal enthusiast from Senggarang, near Batu Pahat.

"It was unique and extraordinary as there was a mix of modern and traditional showmanship from contestants," said the 47-year-old kompang maker.

The primary school category award went to the SK Mohd Khir Johari group from Johor Baru.

They received the Mokhtar Zamzam Challenge Trophy and RM2,000.

The Kluang High School group came up tops in the secondary school category to win the Ahmad Jusoh Challenge Trophy and RM3,000.

Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (Aswara) students beat three other contenders in the harapan category to return to Kuala Lumpur with the S.A. Aisyah Trophy and RM4,000.

The group's male soloist Mohd Edie Nazrin, who sang Tasik Embun, was named the competition's best male vocalist.

The Seri Putera ghazal group from Kluang were the winners in the open category. They took the coveted Pak Lomak Family Challenge Trophy and RM5,000.

1Malaysia, composed by the group and penned by Zainal Abidin Zainir, was the best ghazal song composition.

The best female vocalist award went to Norsiah Md Amin from Ledang.

State Rural and Regional Develoment, Arts, Culture and Heritage committee chairma Asiah Md Ariff gave away the prizes on the final day of the competition.

Waiting to beat procrastination

The elderly should be appreciated before they are no longer with us. — Picture by Zulkarnain Ahmad Tajuddin

IN life, many things happen for a reason, either to signal a change in the course of our habits or to wake us from complacency. Some people believe it is fate.

Essentially, life never turns out the way we plan it. I have encountered many instances which are reality checks.

A recent one was when I misplaced my road tax. I had obtained it well over a month ago and had intended to immediately stick it with the road tax on my car's windscreen. Procrastination and the inability to control certain aspects of my life led to my delaying this simple act.

It began when I renewed my Perodua Kelisa's road tax a month in advance. I had read the expiration date of my road tax wrongly. Instead of July 4, I read June 4.

No matter, I thought, I had done the necessary. But I made the mistake of not immediately changing the old road tax for the new on my car's windscreen.

At the time, the thought which came to mind was that it was still a long time before July 4.

Although I had wanted to do it right away, there was always something holding me back.

Then I decided to do it at night when I would be free, but decided against it, convincing myself that it would be too dark for me to do the task properly. Now that I think of it, it was a silly excuse.

One day, I grabbed hold of my new road tax and placed it in my car. It stayed in my car, wrapped in its plastic envelope. I happily went about my life, commuting to work from Taman Tasek to Bandar Baru Uda, Johor Baru.

I drove to assignments to Tanjung Langsat, Gelang Patah and Muar without a care about the road tax. I reckoned it was safe, lying in the my car's passenger seat.

Then my worst fear happened -- I misplaced my road tax and it happened in my car, of all places.

I could not help recalling a line from Life as a House, a movie I about an architect who discovers he has cancer and dedicates his last days rekindling his relationship with his son, while they build a house together.

The line from the movie goes like this: "Change can just blow you away, make you something different in an instant. It happened to me".

I do hope I change after misplacing my road tax sticker. It was something waiting to happen, as my car is not the most tidy of places.

Anyone who has ever ridden in my Perodua Kelisa will have noticed the abundant newspapers, shoes, slippers, spare clothes for the gym, CDs and other loose items strewn all over the passenger seats.

At times, my car is almost like my store room. I like to call it my second home, though I have yet to sleep in it.

Imagine having a road tax, which weighs as light as a feather, dumped among heaps of the aforementioned belongings.

Then imagine all these items being removed and replaced every day -- because I like to change into slippers or sports shoes after work.

I often clear out the rubbish every now and then only to replace it the following day with more newspapers, CDs or spare clothes for the gym.

The whole episode of misplacing my road tax climaxed with me rummaging through my car, house and desk at the office. I was like a mad man.

A colleague commented that I should calm down and not worry too much.

"Relax-lah, things tend to disappear when we look for them too hard. Sometimes they appear again when we are not looking.

"Don't worry too much or you will get more grey hair," the colleague said.

Clearly, he was not only concerned about my frantic search for my missing road tax sticker, but also the strands of greying hair increasing on my head.

Some may think my experience is quite small. After all, I did not misplace something very valuable like a piece of jewellery. A road tax is replaceable and it was not a life or death situation.

But it is an example of the bad affects of procrastination. It certainly opened up a lot of other things in my life that have been delayed because of my habit of procrastinating.

My study loan, for instance, is giving me unnecessary worry because of my penchant for dilly-dallying. Although I started repaying it some years ago, I have not settled it fully yet.

I could arrange for monthly deductions from my salary to repay the loan, but I have not filled up the form which I need to inform my employer in Kuala Lumpur to carry out the deductions.

The main reason I procrastinate is related to my comfort zone.

I live with my parents and work in Johor Baru. This provides me with the utmost comfort and convenience when it comes to lodging and food. Other then paying for my car loan, and helping out with some household bills, I do not have much financial responsibilities.

At the back of my mind, I know things could change at any moment. My world would be topsy turvy if, for instance, my elderly parents passed away.

Or if I get into a bad road accident, or become jobless for whatever reason. These possible scenarios would shake up my comfortable routine, and force me to change the way I live my life.

My parents constantly reminding me to perform my daily prayers, and not wait till they are gone.

So the choice is ultimately mine. Do I wait for things to happen before I act, or do I appreciate the people and things I have now before they are gone?
