Russia's space industry may face overhaul after cargo ship crash

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:29 PM PDT

MOSCOW: A Russian Progress cargo ship crashed into Siberia after failing to reach the right orbit on Wednesday, reports China's news agency Xinhua.

The crash marked the second failure in space launch in less than a week and the third in this year, prompting local media to suspect a major reshuffle in Russia's space industry.

The Progress M-12M unmanned freighter was launched to the International Space Station from Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan on Wednesday. It was expected to reach a near-Earth orbit about nine minutes after launch.

However, after the 325th second of the flight, which was just a few seconds before the vessel should reach the orbit, the ground control centre lost it.

Russian space agency Roscosmos confirmed later that the cargo ship failed to reach the orbit and fell down.

The malfunction of the Soyuz-U rocket's engine was generally believed to be the cause of the accident, according to local media.

A source in the space industry said the spaceship had sent a breakdown report while separating from the Soyuz rocket.

Some unconfirmed reports said the fuel tank of the booster leaked and the engine was automatically turned off to avoid an explosion.

The wreckage of the Progress cargo ship has already fallen in southern Siberia's Altai Republic, where a big explosion was heard by locals, reported RIA Novosti news agency.

A state investigation committee has been formed to look into the first ever loss of a Progress freighter.

The unprecedented accident raises concerns over the reserves of the six crew members on board the ISS.

The ship was loaded with over 3.5 tons of supplies for the ISS, including scientific materials, oxygen, water and food.

According to Russia's Ground Control, the loss of these supplies will not affect the ISS crew as there are enough stocks of necessities for two to three months.

Also, there is no need for the premature return of the crew, said Vladimir Solovyov, a space official.

However, it still casts some shadow over the ISS programme that relies on Russia exclusively following the retirement of U.S. shuttles.

A source from the Russian space industry said the scheduled launches of the Soyuz rockets are likely to be suspended until the reasons for the accident are established.

This means that current crew members of the ISS would likely stay longer in space than planned, as the new members might not be able to replace them on schedule, the source explained. Solovyov said the launch of the next Progress is scheduled for Oct 28.

So far, Roscosmos has refrained from comments regarding the possible halt of manned missions aboard Soyuz carrier rockets.

"Comments will follow. Now it is necessary to determine the causes of today's abortive launch of a Soyuz-u carrier rocket with the Progress M-2M transport ship," Roscosmos told Itar-Tass news agency.

Local media raised the prospect of a major reshuffle in Russia' s space industry as the country has lost a total of six space vehicles over the past nine months.

On Aug 18, a carrier rocket, Proton-M, failed to deliver to the orbit communication satellite Express-AM4. Earlier in February, Russia had lost a satellite named Geo-IK2.

In December 2010, a booster malfunction resulted in the loss of three satellites in the global positioning and navigation system GLONASS. -- BERNAMA

Malaysians safe as unusual quake shakes New York

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:21 PM PDT

NEW YORK: The Malaysian community in and around New York is reported safe after an earthquake shook the city on Monday.

The Malaysian community is quite large on the east coast and has pockets of population in many towns outside of New York City.

Sources at the Malaysian consulate general in New York told Bernama that they had not heard of any injuries, serious or otherwise, to Malaysians caused by the tremor which recorded 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale and lasted for some 30 seconds.

Brig-Gen Ng Chin Huat, the defence advisor at Malaysia's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York, said that he did not, at first, take cognizance of the tremor but later realized what had happened. "It was an unusual experience," he said.

The Malaysian community has seldom witnessed an earthquake on the east coast which, unlike the earthquake-prone west coast, has hardly had tremors in the past.

There was a very mild tremor of 3.9 magnitude on Nov 30 last year and a 4.7 magnitude tremor on Jan 9, 1992, both of which passed off hardly noticed by anyone except those responsible for weather reports and geological surveys.

The quake's epicenter was near Richmond, Virginia, which is much closer to Washington DC where the Malaysian embassy is located.

Nevertheless, despite the earthquake's epicenter being in Virginia, it was felt as far south as Jacksonville in Florida as well as far west as in Memphis and far north as in Toronto, Canada.

This earthquake, described by locals as "un-Californian", was different from the tremors which take place with greater frequency on the west coast, and are confined to the epicenter and places in its direct proximity.

The quake let loose panic amongst New Yorkers who, though accustomed to the vagaries of the climate such as snow-storms, torrential rains and heat-waves, have rarely known an earthquake.

There were no reports of any damages in New York City caused by the quake except to a water tower in Red Hook. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Substantive swings produced two key by-election victories for the Barisan Nasional tonight.

BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes.

In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes.

BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly.

The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election.

In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes.

Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader.

Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990.

"The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight.

Pas had during the campaigning mocked Abdul Aziz Yusoff, the BN candidate for his lack of qualification. Dr Zulkefli Mohamed of Pas now has to his name three unsuccessful attempts to win seats in the Gua Musang area.

The results of the nation's 12th by election since March 2008 were announced by returning officer Wan Mustapa Abdul Hamid at the Gua Musang Civic Centre here tonight.

Many of Chinese voters in Galas had returned to BN, according to preliminary analysis of the results.

Pas lost in Kampung Baru, which is a Chinese majority area by 41 votes. It garnered more than 200 over votes there in the general election.

The BN election machinery which was led by Tengku Razaleigh, the Gua Musang MP, had adopted a new campaign strategy this time where they focused on a more personal approach as opposed to big scale ceramah and large entourages.

Election Commission deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said voter turnout was 82.71 per cent or 9,555 of the total 11,553 voters in the constituency, compared to a 80.57 per cent turnout in 2008.

In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said.

"My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin.

Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. His death on Oct 9 had led to the by-election.

UiTM student posts highest score in accounting course

SHAH ALAM: Few Malaysians can stake claim to being the best in the world, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) student Khalid Kamarulzaman is one of
them.

He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October.

The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers.

CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy.

Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent.

His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world.

He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10).

"It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21.

Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers".

The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant.

"CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."

"For now, I must be careful not to get too carried away as there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go before I can fulfill my aspirations," he added.

The CAT programme was first offered by the faculty in 2002 to SPM graduates who had at least five credits, inclusive of Mathematics, Malay and English.

Khalid was recognised as a top student during the Faculty's Excellence Day on Oct 6, during which he received an award from UiTM's Vice Chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.

Wong Pei Tty (front) and Chin Eei Hui are the ones BAM are banking on to win gold in the Sea Games in Indonesia.

Wong Pei Tty (front) and Chin Eei Hui are the ones BAM are banking on to win gold in the Sea Games in Indonesia.

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) still harbours hopes of winning gold at the Sea Games in Indonesia despite Lee Chong Wei and men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong not competing.

Instead BAM will be depending on women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying to deliver despite the obvious challenge of hosts Indonesia who will be gunning for a clean sweep of the seven gold medals on offer.

Malaysia surprised many by winning the women's team gold two years ago while Pei Tty-Eeu Hui secured the second gold medal.

BAM scretary Ng Chin Chai said Malaysia will be going for gold in the Sea Games although Chong Wei will be giving the event a miss.

"It will be tough without Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong, but the back-up players will have the opportunity to break through in Indonesia," said Chin Chai.

"Despite the absence of our top players, we will still be fighting for gold as Pei Tty-Eei Hui and Peng Soon-Liu Ying should be around. They are capable of battling for gold. We are also hoping for some surprises from the others.

"Back-up pair Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah have been showing good progress while the second spot is going to be an affair to fill the void left by Kien Keat-Boon Heong.

"Players like Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng as well as back-up Arif Latif and Goh Soon Huat are in the running for the men's singles slots."

BAM may decide to name a new combination for the men's doubles after Zakry Latif and Fairuzizuan Tazari quit the parent body last week and two new combinations -- Tan Wee Kiong-Hoon Thien How and Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock -- will battle to be Malaysia's second doubles.

However, the presence of Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Muhammad Ahsan-Bona Septano, who were semi-finalists in the World Championships in London, means Indonesia will be clear favourites for the men's doubles.

Mixed doubles will also be a tough call as Ahmad Tantowi-Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia are the favourites which means Pei Tty-Eei Hui appear to be the only genuine contenders for gold, but only if the Malaysians can end their losing streak against favourites Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii of Indonesia.

Kamran Khan defeated Austria’s Andreas Freudensprung 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4 on Tuesday. Malaysia won 3-0 to secure top spot in Pool E.

Kamran Khan defeated Austria's Andreas Freudensprung 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4 on Tuesday. Malaysia won 3-0 to secure top spot in Pool E.

MALAYSIA boosted their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals of the Men's World Team Championship after a 3-0 win over Austria set up a second round clash against South Africa in Paderborn, Germany on Tuesday.

Victory against the South Africans in the tie played late yesterday, would mark Malaysia's fourth quarter-final appearance and make up for the national team's second round exit at the hands of Pakistan two years ago.

But having trounced Asian champions Pakistan 3-0 on Monday, Malaysia secured top spot in Pool E in relatively comfortable fashion after routing Austria without the rested National No 1 Azlan Iskandar.

Pakistan, however, suffered the embarrassment of being ousted in the group stage by a modest Denmark 2-1 as Asian Games silver medalist Aamir Atlas Khan suffered a shock defeat against Kristian Frost Olesen.

There were no such worries for Malaysia though as Asian champion Nafiizwan Adnan led the way with an 11-6, 11-1, 12-10 win over Jakob Dirnberger before Kamran Khan, playing his first match of the championship, beat Andreas Freudensprung 11-9, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4.

Ong Beng Hee wrapped up the win, albeit after being pushed hard by Aqeel Rehman, 14-12, 11-9, 11-9 in the dead rubber.

"Azlan was not selected to give him some time to practice and get a better feel," said national coach Allan Soyza in an e-mail.

"The team were not expected to be troubled by Austria and Wan duly delivered the first point despite being forced into a tie-breaker in the third game. Nafiizwan looked much better and more settled on the bouncy courts.

"Kamran had his debut and was quite uncomfortable with the courts and also his opponent who was not too weak either.

"A combination of good play by the Austrian and Kamran's naiveness of wanting to blow his opponent away contributed to his struggles in the first two games.

"Once he settled down and focused on what he needed to do and block out everything else, he was in cruise control.

"Beng Hee took it as more of a routine practice and was never really troubled although the scores may say otherwise."

Should Malaysia claim the expected win over South Africa, who were beaten 3-0 by India in final pool play, either France, who beat Malaysia 3-0 in the 2007 quarter-finals, or Finland await in the last eight.

RESULTS -- Pool A: Germany 3 Spain 0, England 3 Ireland 0; Pool B: Egypt 3 New Zealand 0, Hong Kong 3 Sweden 0; Pool C: France 3 South Korea 0, Netherlands 2 Argentina 1; Pool D: Australia 2 Finland 1, Colombia 3 Bermuda 0; Pool E: Malaysia 3 Austria 0, Denmark 2 Pakistan 1; Pool F: Kuwait 3 Hungary 0, India 3 South Africa 0; Pool G: Canada 3 Namibia 0, Mexico 2 Scotland 1; Pool H: Switzerland 3 Ukraine 0, Italy 3 United States 0.

A cultural centre has been set up at Kampung Sungai Tenom to preserve the heritage of the Orang Laut Seletar community

AN Orang Seletar Cultural Centre was set up at Kampung Sungai Tenom in Johor Baru with the aid and support of the Petaling Jaya-based Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences (MSMS) and funding by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The RM60,000 wooden centre was built on the river and connected to the village by a bridge. The project, completed last April, was aimed at preserving the heritage of the Orang Seletar community, more commonly known as Orang Laut Seletar or sea gypsies.

The centre is managed by the Seletar Cultural and Antiquity Society.

GEF, which is presently a 182-member organisation, was set up in 1991 to protect the global environment and promote a sustainable development, while MSMS began at Universiti Malaya in 1975 to promote the marine sciences.

MSMS project leader, Choo Chee Seong, said the centre was also aimed at improving the livelihood of the Orang Seletar.

"With little education and lacking in social skills, these Orang Asli always find great difficulty getting a job in our society," he said.

"They used to live in sampans in the 1950s along the Straits of Johor."

During the colonial period, the Orang Seletar acted as guides and security escorts to merchant ships along the sea lanes between Malacca and Johor.

The end of the colonial era in the region also meant the end of this job opportunity for the Orang Seletar.

As Singapore was developing swiftly after the 1950s, the Orang Seletar were gradually moved to the coastal areas and stayed there.

It was only after the 1980s that Orang Seletar settled in nine villages in Johor.

An Orang Seletar, Lam Mehlepat, 63, showed the use of some hunting and fishing equipment on display at the village centre.

He also boasted about the bravery of the Orang Seletar in fending off pirates during the colonial era.

"We hope the government will do something to ease our plight," said the father of eight children and grandfather of 15 grandchildren. Three of his children still live in sampans.

Present at the official opening of the cultural centre were Kampung Sungai Tenom village head Tok Batin Salim and Johor People's Progressive Party (PPP) head, Datuk Dr Siva Kumar.

Salim said he was glad to witness the setting up of the centre in his lifetime.

"We are afraid of losing our people and heritage. With the centre, we hope to preserve our culture," he added.

Salim also expressed hopes of organising cultural activities among the Orang Seletar community in Johor.

The opening ceremony featured dances like nyongsang. Guests were served dinner that included dishes like siput gonggong.

Dr Siva Kumar said that housing and education for the Orang Seletar community needed immediate attention.

"I believe we can bring about changes for the Orang Seletar in the village here," said Dr Siva.

Early launch for Mid-Autumn Festival

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 07:01 AM PDT

SUTERA Mall in Johor Baru is launching its month-long celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival on Aug 30 at 7pm.

It will be an evening of shows and entertainment, with the participation of Johor Baru (North-West) Tiong-Hua Association, Southern College and the Fo Guang Shan movement. Seven hundred lanterns will be lit.

Senior centre manager Goh Lak Jin said between 600 and 700 people were expected at the event.

"Even before the official evening launch, there will be a Chinese magic show, Shaolin kung fu performance and a lantern riddle guessing game starting at 1pm," he said.

Goh said the evening's activities would begin with a lion dance performance at the main entrance of the mall.

He said guests and the mall's senior management staff would pass the lanterns to 500 school children, 100 orphans and 100 Southern College students. They will then go on a parade around the Sutera Biz Centre.

Throughout the month, he said, there would competitions and other activities to entertain and teach children about the traditional art of lantern making.

There will be a Chinese lantern riddle competition from Aug 29 to Sept 12 from 5pm to 7pm daily, a lantern making competition for children and adults on Sept 4 and a children's Chang-Er costume competition on Sept 10.

Goh said 1,500 students would be participating in the Lantern Making Workshop and Contest 2011.

"The events are also being held to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Merdeka Day and the third anniversary of Sutera Mall."

Goh said prizes worth more than RM80,000, including the grand prize which is a Perodua MyVi car, would be up for grabs in a special lucky draw.

He said the mall aimed to promote the core values associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese culture.

He said the materials used to make the lanterns were chosen along the lines of the 5R (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Responsible) concept. For details, visit www.suteramall.com or www.facebook.com/SuteraMall.
