Obama deplores Kansas City violence, says US ready to aid probe - Reuters

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 09:16 AM PDT

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday deplored the shootings at Kansas City-area Jewish centers, saying at an Easter season prayer breakfast there was no place for anti-Semitism or other religious-based hatred.

The federal government will provide whatever assistance is needed to investigate the attacks that killed three people on Sunday, the president said at the White House. A suspect is being held on suspicion of premeditated first-degree murder.

"As Americans, we not only need to open our hearts to the families of the victims, we've got to stand united against this kind of terrible violence, which has no place in our society," he said.

It was unfortunate that synagogues and Jewish community centers would feel they needed to step up security ahead of the Passover holiday, he added.

"That this occurred now, as Jews were preparing to celebrate Passover, as Christians were observing Palm Sunday, makes this tragedy all the more painful," Obama said. "Nobody should have to worry about their security when gathering with their fellow believers."

(CNN) -- Scores of pro-Russian protesters storm a Ukrainian police headquarters and confront the officers inside. Hundreds outside back up the intruders, chanting. A Russian flag flies from the structure as the crowd listens to activists with a megaphone at the entrance.

Monday was the day the Ukrainian government demanded pro-Russian activists give up. Instead, they appear to have overrun another key building in yet another eastern Ukrainian city.

Protesters forced police officers out of their four-story headquarters in the eastern Ukrainian city of Horlivka, witnesses said, adding a new complication for a Kiev government worried about demonstrators' escalating activity in the east and a Russian neighbor that it accuses of fomenting the discontent.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov had given pro-Russian protesters in other eastern Ukrainian cities until 2 a.m. ET to disarm or face a "full-scale anti-terrorist operation" by Ukraine's armed forces. But the deadline passed with no sign that it was heeded, including in the eastern city of Donetsk, where protesters have held the regional government building for more than a week.

Similar deadlines in the past have come and gone with no consequences.

A video shown on online streaming service Ustream purports to show scores of people entering the police headquarters in Horlivka, a city of 300,000. CNN could not independently verify the video.

Demonstrators crammed the halls in the video. Windows were broken, small fires burned and police appeared to have no control. Officers warned activists to avoid looting, though no officer stopped the masses walking through the halls and rooms.

A severely beaten man in a police uniform was taken to an ambulance as onlookers shouted at him.

Horlivka would be at least the 10th city or town in eastern Ukraine where activists have taken over security or government buildings in recent days.

Also Monday, in Slaviansk, Ukrainian authorities appeared to take no action to retake a police station that was occupied earlier. Pro-Russian protesters milled around with makeshift shields outside the building.

When asked why the Ukrainian government had made no apparent move to evict protesters after the deadline passed, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Danylo Lubkivsky told reporters that the government still believes in a political solution. Although it wants to avoid bloodshed, the government still will protect the country's territorial integrity, he said Monday in Kiev.

Kiev blames Moscow

The unrest is the latest in a series of events ratcheting up tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which Kiev accuses of fomenting trouble in Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine.

After then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych backed out of a deal with the European Union in November in favor of closer ties with Russia, months of protests in Kiev led to his ouster in February.

Distrust among the population in eastern Ukraine -- the base of Yanukovych's power -- grew as the new national government shifted rapidly in a pro-Western direction. A short time later, pro-Russian elements occupied the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Russia annexed in March. Since then, pro-Russian protesters have taken to the streets in eastern Ukraine and in some cases stormed and occupied buildings.

Kiev's fragile new government and the West accuse Russia of destabilizing the region as a pretext to potentially send in troops to protect the local Russian-speaking population.

NATO says Russian armed forces are massing on Ukraine's eastern border, while Moscow says they are merely carrying out military exercises.

Turchynov on Sunday issued a promise of amnesty for the activists -- including protesters as well as armed militants -- in eastern Ukraine but warned that anyone who continued to support the takeover of government buildings would be held responsible for their actions.

"We'll not allow any repetition of the Crimean scenario in the east of Ukraine," Turchynov said. "I have signed a decree that would allow those who did not shoot at our officers to lay down their arms and leave the occupied buildings by Monday morning without fear of being prosecuted."

Referendum proposed

After the deadline passed Monday, Turchynov said the majority of Ukrainians would back keeping Ukraine in one piece if a referendum is held along with presidential elections set for May 25.

"We do not mind having a referendum," Turchynov told members of parliament.

"Moreover, if there is (a) parliamentary decision to hold one together with the presidential elections, I am sure most people will express support of independent and unitary Ukraine."

Turchynov has said Russia was responsible for the bloodshed relating to the most recent protests. At least one Ukrainian soldier was killed in Sunday clashes between pro-Ukrainian crowds and pro-Russian protesters, a high-level source in Ukraine's Security Services told CNN.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said any use of force against pro-Russian demonstrators in Ukraine will make it more difficult to create a lasting solution to the crisis.

A stable Ukraine is in Moscow's best interest, Lavrov said, also denying reports that Russian forces are active in the east. He refused to speculate about what events or actions would spur a military intervention by Russia into Ukraine.

Lavrov said he would hold off judgment on Turchynov's proposed referendum until Moscow sees the outline of the questions to be asked. He added that pro-Russian activists in the east must be given an active role in shaping a new constitution.

'Evidence of Russian involvement'

Ukrainian officials have placed blame for unrest in the eastern section of their country squarely on Russia. The new Ukrainian government said it was launching security operations against terrorists who are attempting to "destroy our country."

Giving no further details, it also said it had "concrete evidence of Russian special service involvement" in the pro-Russian protests and storming of buildings and would present it at an international meeting on the Ukraine crisis on Thursday.

Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday the attacks in Slaviansk were "professional" and "coordinated" -- similar to Russia's incursion into the Crimean Peninsula last month.

The United States is prepared to step up sanctions against Russia if the recent actions in Ukraine continue, she said. Speaking on ABC's "This Week," she said the latest events in Ukraine bore "the telltale signs of Moscow's involvement."

"I think we've seen that the sanctions can bite. And if actions like the kind that we've seen over the last few days continue, you're going to see a ramping up of those sanctions," she said.

EU cutting tariffs for Ukraine

The European Union on Monday took another step to help Ukraine economically as Kiev's new government seeks closer ties to the West.

The EU's Foreign Affairs Council approved tariff cuts for most industrial and all agricultural goods, which will make it cheaper for Ukraine to export them to the European Union, saving Ukraine about 500 million euros a year, the council said.

The cuts will start at the end of April and last until November 1, by which time a fuller free-trade deal is expected to take effect.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is to meet this week with foreign ministers from the United States, Russia and Ukraine in Switzerland to discuss efforts to de-escalate the situation. EU foreign ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss the crisis.

On Sunday night, the U.N. Security Council held an urgent, previously unscheduled meeting to discuss the worsening crisis, where strong condemnations and accusations were traded.

Pope Francis poses for 'selfies' after Palm Sunday homily - Fox News

Pope Francis, marking Palm Sunday in a packed St. Peter's Square, ignored his prepared homily and spoke entirely off-the-cuff in a remarkable departure from practice. Later, he hopped off his popemobile to pose for "selfies" with young people and also sipped tea passed to him from the crowd.

In his homily, Francis called on people, himself included, to look into their own hearts to see how they are living their lives.

"Has my life fallen asleep?" Francis asked after listening to a Gospel account of how Jesus' disciples fell asleep shortly before he was betrayed by Judas before his crucifixion.

"Am I like Pontius Pilate, who, when he sees the situation is difficult, washes my hands?"

He sounded tired, frequently pausing to catch his breath, as he spoke for about 15 minutes in his homily during Palm Sunday Mass, which solemnly opens Holy Week for the Roman Catholic Church.

`'Where is my heart?" the pope asked, pinpointing that as the "question which accompanies us" throughout Holy Week.

Francis seemed to regain his wind after the 2 1/2 hour ceremony. He shed his red vestments atop his plain white cassock, chatted amiably with cardinals dressed more formally than he at that point. Then he posed for "selfies" with young people from Rio de Janeiro who had carried a large cross in the square.

He had barely climbed aboard his open-topped popemobile when he spotted Polish youths, they, too, clamoring for a "selfie" with a pope, and he hopped off, not even waiting for the vehicle to fully stop, to oblige them. In another moment in the pope's long tour of the square, the Vatican's security chief poured herbal mate tea from a thermos, thrust toward the pontiff by someone in the crowd, into a mate cup, also held out by an admirer, and passed the cup to Francis for a sip.

In a crowd of around 100,000 Romans, tourists and pilgrims, people clutched olive tree branches, tall palm fronds or tiny braided palm leaves shaped like crosses that were blessed by Francis at the start of the ceremony.

Francis used a wooden pastoral staff carved by Italian prison inmates, who donated it to him. The pope wants to put people on the margins of life at the center of the church's attention.

Francis wore red vestments, symbolizing blood shed by the crucified Jesus.

Holy Week culminates next Sunday with Easter Mass, also in St. Peter's Square.  Many faithful will remain in Rome, while others will pour into the city for the April 27 canonization of two popes, John Paul II and John XXIII. Francis noted that John Paul's long-time aide, now Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow, Poland, had come to Rome.

Francis noted he'll be making a pilgrimage to South Korea this summer, with the key event an Asian youth gathering on Aug. 15 in Daejeon.

Bus crash: Report of fire in FedEx truck, no skid marks add to mystery - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 13 Apr 2014 08:05 AM PDT

Investigators probing the collision of a FedEx freight truck and a charter bus that killed 10 were dealing with disparate clues, including reports that the truck was on fire before the crash as well as evidence that its driver appeared not to brake.

A woman who said the truck sideswiped her car moments before Thursday evening's fatal accident said she saw flames coming from beneath the twin-trailer vehicle as it veered across a grassy median toward disaster.

A man who lives next to Interstate 5, however, said he saw no flames from the truck before the crash as he watched it swerve out of control after it made an abortive attempt to move into freeway's fast lane.

PHOTOS: Bus crash

Both witnesses said the truck veered sharply from southbound lanes, across the median and into a Silverado Stages charter bus, which carried 48 people, including 44 Southern California high school students.

"When they collided, it was boom!" said Ryan Householder, 31, who watched from his home, where he had been mowing his lawn. He said he was haunted by the screams of those who couldn't escape the burning bus.

A National Transportation Safety Board member said Saturday evening that the truck left no skid marks on either the roadway or the median. In contrast, more than 145 feet of tire marks indicated that the bus driver tried to stop and swerve to the right, said the NTSB's Mark Rosekind.

"That driver was clearly reacting to a situation with braking and a driving maneuver," he said.

Rosekind cautioned that it remained too early to tell what prompted the FedEx driver to leave the southbound lanes. The investigator said blood samples had been obtained from the drivers, both of whom died in the crash. The samples will be used to test for alcohol, drugs or medication.

The regulator confirmed that some of the victims were thrown from the bus. "We're going to look at whether seat belts might have kept them in place and whether that would have made a difference," Rosekind said.

Rosekind said a black-box-style electronic device was recovered from the bus and will be analyzed. The truck's device was destroyed, but other steps will be taken to analyze the machinery.

Rosekind said the bus was a "very new motor coach" — only about a month old. The FedEx truck was manufactured in 2007, he said.

The new details about the moments before the accident came as three more students, previously listed as missing, were confirmed dead. The toll includes five students, three adult chaperons and the still-unidentified drivers. Final, formal identification of remains could take several weeks.

"We have no one that's missing. All the names are accounted for. We just don't know which body goes with which name," said Larry Jones, sheriff and coroner for Glenn County, north of Sacramento. "And we don't know at this point what body to release to what family."

Bonnie and Joe Duran, who live near Tacoma, Wash., had just passed the charter bus and were heading north, according to the NTSB official, when the FedEx truck suddenly burst across the median.

"It was on fire already," Bonnie Duran, who was driving, said of the truck. She told NBC4-TV that the flames appeared to be coming from the lower rear of the truck cab.

She tried to veer her rented four-door Nissan Altima to the right, but it was too late. The FedEx truck sideswiped her, ripping off the rear passenger door. A moment later, the truck slammed into the charter bus. Both burst into flames.

Neither of the Durans was seriously injured.

Ukraine gunmen seize two buildings in Sloviansk - BBC News

Posted: 12 Apr 2014 08:49 AM PDT

The BBC's David Stern: "It was a very tense situation and potentially very volatile"

Armed men have seized a police station and a security services building in eastern Ukraine, officials say.

Police said the men fired shots and used stun grenades to seize the offices in Sloviansk, near the Russian border.

The interior minister called the gunmen "terrorists" and said special forces would repel the attack.

Pro-Russian activists have seized government buildings elsewhere in east Ukraine. Kiev accuses Moscow of orchestrating the unrest.

Interim Foreign Minister Andrei Deshchytsia urged Moscow to end "provocative" actions by its agents.

Protesters wave the Russian flag in front of police station in Slaviansk 12/04/2014Tensions are rising in the east, as pro-Russian activists continue a stand-off with Ukraine's new government

Eastern Ukraine has a large Russian-speaking population and has seen a series of protests since the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

Protesters in largely Russian-speaking Donetsk, 130km (80 miles) from Sloviansk, have been occupying government buildings for days and demanding a referendum on becoming part of Russia.

A similar move prompted a Russian takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region earlier this year.

The US and EU have put sanctions on Russian and Crimean people they say were connected with the takeover.

Russia has denied responsibility for the protests in eastern Ukraine, but Western nations have expressed concern over a build-up of Russian troops along the border.

Interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk visited Donetsk on Friday and attempted to placate anti-government groups by guaranteeing that no restrictions would be put on the use of the Russian language.

The Kiev government had set a deadline of Friday for all occupations to end, but trouble continued in several cities in the east.

Meanwhile, regional police spokesman Ihor Dyomin described how armed men were bussed to the police station in Sloviansk.

"Six or seven unknown persons got out. They fired several shots in the air and attempted to storm the police department," he said.

He added that "people in camouflage uniform" and with weapons" were inside the building.

Interim Interior Minister Arsen Avakov promised to deal with the attackers.

"The response will be very tough because there is a difference between protesters and terrorists," he said in Ukrainian on his Facebook page.

The Interior Ministry said the aim of the attack was to seize arms from the police station, where some 40 automatic rifles and 400 pistols were stored along with ammunition.

One of those who seized the police station said the group had gone to Sloviansk to fight people who represented the illegal authorities of interim President Oleksandr Turchynov, according to a video posted on Youtube.

Interviewed in Russian, the man said they represented the People's Front of Donbass - the industrial Donets Basin region in eastern Ukraine.

He said those involved were peaceful Donbass residents and "not fascists".

The BBC's David Stern, who was briefly in Sloviansk on Saturday, said from what he saw the take-over was well-organised and the gunmen were quickly spreading their control throughout the town and beyond.

The roadblocks were being reinforced with more tyres as he left, and the people manning them were well-armed, he said.

The occupation by pro-Russian groups of the local government building in Donetsk is meanwhile continuing.

Alexander Gnezdilov, the protesters' unofficial spokesperson, told the BBC the group that seized Sloviansk police HQ was "an independent group who are supporting the Donetsk protest".

Also on Saturday, hundreds of pro-Russian protesters marched towards a police station in the regional capital Donetsk.

They threatened to storm the building, demanding the resignation of city police chief Kostyantyn Pozhydayev.

He later told the protesters he was standing down.

Tractor-trailer truck in flames before it crashed into students' bus, witnesses say - CNN

Posted: 12 Apr 2014 08:55 AM PDT

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Witnesses say flames were shooting from the truck before it hit bus
  • "It was like a 3-D movie," said a man in a car that was clipped by the truck
  • A FedEx truck crossed the median, collided with the bus about 100 miles north of Sacramento
  • The collision killed both drivers, five students and three chaperones

(CNN) -- A FedEx tractor-trailer truck was already in flames when it crossed a median and slammed into a bus carrying students in Northern California, CNN affiliate KOVR reported, citing two witnesses.

The truck clipped a car occupied by Joe and Bonnie Duran before it slammed into the bus Thursday evening, killing 10 people -- five high school students, three chaperones and the drivers of both vehicles. More than 30 people, mostly teenagers, were taken to local hospitals.

Bonnie Duran told the affiliate the truck was on fire before it hit the bus. She said she made a quick decision to swerve to avoid a direct hit from the truck, sending their rental car into a ditch.

"Somehow we survived," she said.

Her husband, Joe Duran, said it was like a scene from a movie.

"I looked over and saw the FedEx truck coming straight for me," he told the affiliate. "It was like a 3-D movie. Imagine a Mack truck coming out of a movie."

The Durans were hospitalized and released.

Students traveling from the L.A. area

The students were traveling from the Los Angeles area to take part in a program at Humboldt State, which allows prospective attendees to visit the campus.

Their journey ended in a fiery wreck 90 miles north of Sacramento when the truck hit one of three buses taking the teens to the campus in Arcarta.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the crash in Orland on Interstate 5, which cuts through the heart of California's farming country.

The dozens of teens represented 31 Southern California high schools. They were heading to "Spring Preview Plus," which invites low-income and first-generation prospective students to the university.

As part of the program, students stay in residence halls, attend events and visit with staff and students from a program that helps historically underrepresented students, the university said.

The two other buses in the caravan made it to the university. Those students were placed in dorms, and the university is offering them counseling.

10 killed in California bus crash: Victim was 'like a man on fire' - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 09:13 AM PDT

ORLAND, Calif. – Los Angeles Unified officials said Friday that 19 of its students were aboard the bus that collided with a FedEx freight truck in Northern California. At least 10 people were killed in the fiery crash.

Witnesses described the horrific aftermath of the crash and the helplessness they felt as flames devoured the vehicles with people trapped inside.

Pomali Thitphaneth, who lives nearby, said she saw one victim screaming for help.

"It was like a man on fire," she said.

PHOTOS: Deadly bus crash

Officials have not released the identities of those killed in the crash, which occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday when the FedEx truck crossed a grassy median on Interstate 5 and slammed into the bus packed with students en route to Humboldt State University.

The victims included five students, three adult chaperons, the driver of the truck and the driver of the bus, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher told The Times.

Flags were flying at half staff at Humboldt State University on Friday as the school's president visited students in multiple hospitals, starting in the early morning hours.

"We wanted them and their families to know we care about them," Rollin Richmond said.

CHP officer Tracy Hoover estimated that more than 30 people were hurt. At least one person suffered from "severe burns " while others had "cuts, scrapes, minor burns and contusions," she said.

The impact, which witnesses said sounded like a series of explosions, caused both vehicles to burst into flames. The fireball and towering black smoke were captured by the cellphone cameras of others in nearby cars.

Dorsey Griffith, a spokeswoman for UC Davis Medical Center, said one patient who was admitted to the burn unit died late Thursday night. The CHP dispatcher confirmed the 10th fatality occurred at the medical center. Three buses had been chartered for the 12-hour ride, which was for Los Angeles-area students accepted to the university.

Complicating the effort to confirm who was in which bus was the fact that the students came from multiple schools and districts. Officials on Friday narrowed the list to the following schools: Chatsworth charter, Middle College, San Fernando, Dorsey, John C. Fremont, City of Angels School, Robert F. Kennedy, Manual Arts, Banning, Carson and the Diego Rivera Learning Complex.

The district did not organize the field trip and was relying on Humboldt State, the CHP and other agencies for information, said Gayle Pollard-Terry, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Other school districts that may have had students on the buses could not immediately be confirmed. "I don't what's taking so long," she said. "We thought we would have this information by now."

CHP Officer Lacey Heitman said investigators will finish their initial work at the scene of the crash Friday morning, with tow trucks scheduled to begin clearing the wreckage by 10 a.m. to allow for the reopening of the northbound lanes of Interstate 5.

An investigation team from the National Transportation Safety Board was not expected to arrive in Orland until around noon, she added. Meanwhile, the CHP was scheduled to hold a news conference at 10 a.m.

Company officials confirmed in statements that the bus was operated by Silverado Stages and the truck by FedEx. In the wake of the crash, uninjured students were brought to the Veterans Memorial Hall in Orland, where the Red Cross set up a shelter.

Some students escaped the burning bus through an emergency exit, but others smashed windows. Among them was Jonathan Gutierrez, 17, who fell to the pavement after climbing out.

Wearing only his socks -- he had taken off his shoes while trying to fall asleep -- he ran across the highway with other students.

"They were just yelling, 'Oh my God, what just happened?'" Gutierrez said. "They were crying."

He suffered a gash over his right eyebrow when he hit the plastic tray in the back of the seat in front of him after being hurled forward upon impact.

PHOTOS: Deadly bus crash

Early Friday, a FedEx spokeswoman confirmed that a company "freight truck" was involved in the collision. In a statement, FedEx said, "We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they investigate."

In a statement, Silverado Stages officials said they were "helping the authorities in gathering information regarding the tragic accident that occurred on Thursday evening. Our top priority is making sure that the injured are being cared for. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their families and everyone affected by this accident." Humboldt State officials said the charter bus was bringing a group of prospective students to the campus' April 12 spring preview day.

University officials made use of the school's website to report what they knew. An emergency information line for the Humboldt State University Police was made available to family members seeking their loved ones, at (707) 826-6327.

Slashing suspect's parents 'did not foresee' outburst - USA TODAY

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 09:30 AM PDT

The student charged in a bloody high school knife attack Wednesday is a shy 16-year-old teen who was teased at school, a classmate says. VPC

By Oren Dorell and John Bacon, USA TODAY 12:32 p.m. EDT April 10, 2014

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. — The picture of Alex Hribal emerging Thursday was one of a quiet, shy teen, and a good student who may have been teased at school but showed no outward signs of unhappiness or rage before the bizarre knife assault at his high school.

Hribal was charged as an adult with four counts of attempted homicide and 21 counts of aggravated assault after police say he went on a slashing and stabbing rampage Wednesday at Franklin Regional High that injured at least 20 students and a security guard.

District Attorney John Peck said during the brief hearing later that day that Alex made some statements — after school officials and police tackled, subdued and ultimately handcuffed him — indicating he wanted to die.

Alex's lawyer, Patrick Thomassey, said the 16-year-old sophomore's parents were as stunned as the rest of the community by Hribal's outburst.

"They did not foresee this coming. They expressed absolute horror," Thomassey told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said the teenager was not a loner, nor was he aware of any instances of bullying.

"He's scared," Thomassey told the paper. "He's a young kid. He's 16, looking like he's 12. This is all still new to him."

Thomassey said Alex is a B-plus student from an "Ozzie and Harriet" home.

STORY: Students recount horror of attack

Classmate Kaitlyn Pepper, 16, told USA TODAY that Alex was so small and quiet "he was like a shadow in the hallways."

Kaitlyn, like Alex a sophomore, had a class with Hribal last year. She recalled that he was small for his age — "like a little boy," she said — and that he was teased.

"I'd witnessed people say things to him," she said. "I couldn't tell you who said it. I didn't realize it was all that bad."

She didn't know what the teasing was about, but she described it as somewhat relentless.

"They just said things. They ride him and ride him, and today was the day that he snapped," she said.

Thomassey told ABC's Good Morning America on Thursday that the defense case likely will hinge on Hribal's mental health. He said he hoped to move the charges against the teen to juvenile court, where he could be rehabilitated and avoid decades in prison.

Thomassey said Hribal is remorseful but may not appreciate the gravity of his actions.

"At this point, he's confused, scared and depressed. Over the next few days we'll try to figure out what the heck happened here," Thomassey said. "I don't think he realizes how severely injured some of these people are."

A male sophomore described as "really shy"' went on a slashing and stabbing rampage Wednesday with two knives at a Murrysville, Pa., high school, injuring at least 19 students before he was subdued and handcuffed, police said.

At least eight people were hospitalized with serious injuries, many deep puncture wounds to the abdomen, hospital officials said.

Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld said the suspect, who was in custody, was being treated for injuries to his hand. He was subdued and handcuffed by a principal and a security guard, he said.

Seefeld said a fire alarm triggered during the incident at Franklin Regional High School prompted students to flee the building, likely keeping down the number of victims.

Mia Meixner, a sophomore, told USA TODAY that she putting her books away near the cafeteria when she heard a commotion and saw the male suspect "stabbing people on top of a freshman."

She said the suspect "just got up and ran away really fast." Meixner identified the suspect, but USA TODAY is withholding his name from publication.

"The freshman stood up, lifted up his shirt and he was gushing blood," Meixner said. "I also saw a senior girl ... and she was gushing blood down her arm."

Meixner, who described the suspect as "really shy," said he "always kept to himself."

"He didn't talk to many people," she said. "He wasn't mean or anything, he just wasn't outgoing."

Mexiner said the suspect did not appear to be targeting anyone in particular..

VIOLENCE: Recent incidents of stabbing deaths

Nicole Damico, a junior at the school, told USA TODAY she and a friend were at their lockers when the alarm went off. They then heard the principal on a walkie-talkie shouting for more ambulances.

"We saw two kids down the hall and it looked like they were okay fighting," she said. "I realized that one had a knife so we sprinted out of the school. One if my peers had blood everywhere and he asked me for help. I just froze and ran out of the school. After that there was chaos."

Damico said students on social media were getting threatened last night that they would be beaten or killed.

"Us kids have been through hell and back. It made me realize that anything could happen at anytime. It was just a regular day," she said.

At least eight people were hospitalized with serious injuries, said Mark Rubino of Forbes Hospital.

He said three students were still in surgery, and that five were being evaluated and that some of them may require surgery.

He said many of the victims have "deep penetrating injuries" to the lower abdomen and right flank.

Doctors said a female student saved the life of a stabbed classmate by applying pressure until medics arrived.

Hospital officials said a 60-year-old man, apparently the security guard, was hospitalized for a medical condition, but was not stabbed.

Murrysville is located about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Pistorius Refuses to Look at Photo of Dead Lover - ABC News

Posted: 09 Apr 2014 09:11 AM PDT

Oscar Pistorius refused to look at a photo of his dead girlfriend's bloody head wounds while testifying at his murder trial Wednesday as the prosecutor urged the star athlete to "take responsibility" for killing her.

"It's time that you look at it," chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel said, setting the stage for a rigorous first day of cross-examination of Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympian charged with premeditated murder for shooting Reeva Steenkamp three times through a toilet door at his home.

"I remember," Pistorius said of Steenkamp's bloodied head, becoming distraught and then crying as he turned away from the gruesome image of the injuries he inflicted that were displayed next to him in a packed courtroom in South Africa's capital.

Nel said Steenkamp's head "exploded" when it was struck by one of four hollow-point bullets that Pistorius fired through the door on Feb. 14, 2013 with his 9 mm pistol. The showing of the photograph on TV screens in the courtroom caused gasps among spectators, who included Steenkamp's mother, June. The police photo showed a side view of the dead model and reality TV star's head, with a mass of blood and human tissue on the back and upper parts. Her eyes were closed.

"I will not look at a picture where I'm tormented by what I saw and felt that night," Pistorius said. "As I picked Reeva up, my fingers touched her head. I remember. I don't have to look at a picture, I was there."

Pistorius, 27, says he shot Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours on Valentine's Day — in the head, arm and hip — by mistake thinking she was a dangerous intruder behind the door in his bathroom about to come out and attack him. Prosecutors charge he killed the 29-year-old intentionally, and Nel aggressively questioned Pistorius for the first time.

"You killed her," Nel said. "You shot and killed her," and he asked Pistorius to say it. Pistorius would not, saying merely: "I did."

Pistorius faces a possible prison term of 25 years to life if convicted of premeditated murder.

Nel also showed a video, first broadcast by Sky News days before the trial started, of the celebrated athlete firing a gun at a watermelon at a shooting range. On the video, Pistorius can be heard saying the melon was "softer than brains" after it explodes when the bullet hits it, and calling the powerful .50-caliber handgun he was using a "zombie stopper."

Referring to the watermelon, Nel said to Pistorius: "You know the same happened to Reeva's head. It exploded."

Defense lawyer Barry Roux objected to the gun video being shown, saying it was inadmissible character evidence and amounted to a legal "ambush" of the defense.

After the dramatic start, prosecutor Nel also started to poke holes in details of Pistorius' version of the events of the fatal night. The champion runner said that his claim in a court document a year ago that he went out onto a balcony at his home before the shooting was incorrect. Pistorius said he went to the edge of the balcony but not outside. The discrepancy could be significant because Pistorius says he heard a noise in the bathroom that alerted him to a possible intruder, which would have been harder if he was out on the balcony.
