PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu said president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, assistant secretary-general Dr Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi, himself and several others plan to meet him soon.

He said PAS has sent a letter to Tuanku Mizan asking for an audience and is expected to receive a reply today or tomorrow.

"The Agong's advice is good as he asked to safeguard public order, ensure public safety and not to destroy property.

"He is a true constitutional monarch for being a middleman to resolve the present crisis," he said at a PAS function in Ledang last night.

King urges restraint

We can't follow practices of other countries, says Tuanku Mizan

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di- Pertuan Agong yesterday urged certain segments of the people not to be overzealous in their attempts to "enrich democracy" in the country lest this "brings about destruction".

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin said Malaysians could not be following blindly the practices of other countries because harmony and stability were things that needed to be defended by everyone. He said he had been closely following the plan by Bersih 2.0 to organise a rally on Saturday to hand over a memorandum to him and expressed confidence in the administration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in handling the issue.

Najib, meanwhile, defended police actions, including the use of the Emergency Ordinance, saying such measures were necessary.

The prime minister said this was to prevent people with hidden agendas from exploiting the gathering.

It was a sentiment echoed by his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said the opposition was inciting the people to go to the streets to demand for fair and transparent elections, which he added was already being practised.

Addressing the Federal Territory Barisan Nasional convention yesterday, Muhyiddin, who is also BN deputy chairman, said it was never the opposition's motive to fight for democracy.

He said the opposition had no right to demand for democracy as they did not practise it themselves.

Arrests were made in several states, including Selangor, Johor, Malacca and Perak, over the weekend.

All were suspected to have been promoting the illegal rally.

In Klang, police detained Kapar member of parliaments.

Manikavasagam yesterday when he was found in possession of nine Bersih 2.0 T-shirts in his car.

Klang Utara police chief Superintendent Mohamad Shukor Sulong said Manikavasagam was released several hours later after having his statement recorded.

In Johor Baru, police detained six DAP members, including Bakri member of parliament Er Teck Hwa, at the Taman Sri Tebrau market at 9.40am yesterday.

The men, clad in T-shirts with the slogan "Negara Bersih, Negara Ber tuah" (A clean nation, a fortunate nation), were detained on suspicion of promoting the Bersih 2.0 rally.

The others detained were Johor DAP Socialist Youth chief Tan Hong Pin, vice-chief Jason Josob, Johor DAP committee member Chen Kah Eng, Taman Bukit Indah DAP branch secretary Yan Boon Meng and Johor DAP assistant political education director Tang Chee Kia.

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainuddin Yaakob said the men were detained under the Societies, Printing Presses and Publications and Sedition acts In Jasin , 17 Pas members were arrested at the party's premises in Dataran Hamas at 1.15pm yesterday for promoting the Bersih 2.0 rally.

Among those detained was state Pas Youth deputy chief Yuhaizad Abdullah, 38.

State police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said police also seized 113 yellow T-shirts with the words "BERSIH 2.0" and 303 leaflets.

They were freed on police bail.

In Batu Gajah, police detained three people wearing Bersih 2.0 Tshirts at thewet market on Saturday.

In Terengganu , a district-level opposition leader was among seven de - tained in Marang and Dungun last week for promoting the Bersih rally.

The Dungun-based man was detained near Jalan Alor Tembesu at 6pm on Thursday for obstructing police who were trying to take down a banner promoting the rally.

Proton to introduce CVT in new cars

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 09:40 PM PDT

In a statement today, Syed Zainal said Proton has been conducting a comprehensive development and integration tests of the CVT with its CamPro engines and was happy to be able to provide this option to future buyers.

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd will introduce the continuous variable transmission (CVT) technology in its coming range of cars, said group managing director, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

"Soon, CVT will be mated to our CamPro engines as an option to our range of cars along with the conventional four-speed automatic gear transmission that is currently being used.

"This feature will not only provide more than just a smoother drive but it will also contribute towards fuel efficiency and savings to the user," he said.

Syed Zainal said in view of fuel price pressure on consumers, the introduction of CVT would contribute significantly to not only provide drivers with a smoother drive but also help reduce fuel consumption.

He said Proton tests showed that the use of CVT in a car could reduce fuel consumption by up to four per cent with regards to urban driving and almost up to 10 per cent for highway driving.

"Lower fuel consumption also impacts the environment significantly by reducing carbon dioxide emissions," he said.

CVT technology has been growing in popularity among high-end car makers globally as it provides a smoother drive and more efficient performance to their cars. -- BERNAMA

RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan

RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan

2010/11/01
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: The health ministry has allocated RM1.1 million to the Kelantan state government to implement rural water development projects to ensure people living in rural areas receive clean and adequate water supply.

Deputy health minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Shirlin said the projects consist of
controlled wells, feed gravity system as well as piped connection from Syarikat
Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

"The allocation is channelled to state health department to implement the projects," she said after attending the handing-over of the projects to Sungai

Terah residents here.

She said to date, Kelantan received 84.7 per cent of clean water supply
encompassing 223,115 households.

Only 40,212 households have yet to have clean water supplied by the ministry or
by AKSB. She expressed hopes that Gua Musang will receive 100 per cent water supply as soon as possible. To ensure the water is safe for consumption, she adviced residents to follow a few simple rules, namely:

  • Boil water before drinking;
  • The wells and feed gravity system need to be chlorinated periodically to kill off bacteria and reduce contamination risk; and
  • Trees or plants near water catchment areas should not be cut down to prevent the water source from drying up.

She also said this year, Kelantan has recorded six cholera, 28 typhoid and 2,168

food poisoning cases to date.

"These diseases still pose a risk to rural folk," she said.

MCA praises PM

2010/11/15
By Chong Chee Seong

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's achievements since taking over the mantle of the country last April had received praise from MCA.

In commending Najib for his hard work, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said Barisan Nasional's victories in the Nov 4 Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections were due to the people's acceptance of Najib's 1Malaysia concept.

Dr Chua said the Chinese were pragmatic people who will support the Prime Minister for doing what is good for the country.

"MCA is confident the results (of two by-elections) will serve as momentum to regain support of the community for the next general election," he said after opening a RM500,000 building and a hall in the SJKC Chung Hwa 3 last Thursday.

The speech was made on Dr Chua's behalf by Johor MCA secretary Tay Puay Chuan, who is also MCA Muar division chief.

Dr Chua said Najib's assurance that BN pledges in Galas and Batu Sapi would be fulfilled was a positive step to win the trust and confidence of the people.

He said by making continuous changes, BN would become a party that will received strong support.

"The victory of the two by-elections is an indication that BN's is ready and will do well in the next general election."

Dr Chua also said the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was a clear-cut strategy and a roadmap towards making Malaysia a high-income economy.

Earlier, deputy youth and sports minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also the Muar MP, said investment in education was not measured by ringgit and sen but by quality.

Malaysia advance after thriller

TAIPEH: Call it what you will. Whether it was the away blues, the yellow jersey curse or just plain bad luck (three penalties were conceded), there was no disguising the fact that a disaster was averted.

There was no celebration at the end of a disjointed performance at the Taipeh Municipal Stadium as Malaysia advanced to the second round of the Asian World Cup qualifying only on the away goals rule after a 3-2 defeat to Taiwan levelled the aggregate score at 4-4.

The defeat left a bitter after-taste as the national team succumbed to a side ranked 165th in the world and national coach K. Rajagobal knew the performance left much to be desired.

Had it not been for Sharbinee Allawee Ramli saving the second of those penalties, Malaysia could well have suffered an embarrassing exit to a Taiwanese team inspired by 15,000 roaring fans who were given free admission..

"Taiwan started aggressively as they were going for the first goal and after we scored in the eighth minute, we should have played calmly.

"That goal should have given us the confidence to play better but we did not play our normal game. And when they scored, it was down to our own mistakes.

"More importantly, however, we are through to the second round but we must fix our mistakes and not repeat them," said Rajagobal, who made three changes to the side that won the first leg 2-1 in Bukit Jalil.

Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Abdul Hadi Yahya started together upfront as Mahalli Jasuli came in at right-back while Taiwan handed a debut to Xavier Chen in their only change.

Whether Vietnamese referee Vo Minh Tri was justified to give away three penalties to the home team will be debated to no end.

Certainly the third spot-kick was doubtful with replays indicating Sharbinee had got his hands to the ball before Taiwan's Chen Po Liang went tumbling over.

Later, Vo denied Malaysia a legitimate penalty claim when Ahmad Fakri Saarani was sent spinning in the box.

"Never in my career have three penalties been awarded against my team. The third penalty, from where I was, I don't think should have been given. I'm not satisfied with the way we played but we did well in patches when attacking and Fakri should have had a penalty," added Rajagobal.

Aidil Zafuan Radzak and Safiq Rahim twice gave Malaysia the lead in the first half but each time Taiwan came back with some enterprising movement to rattle the visitors.

Aidil's thundering free-kick in the eighth minute, some 35 metres out which went in off the under-side of the bar, wiped out Taiwan's away goal advantage from the first leg.

Any pretension Malaysia had of coasting through the match was swept away by Taiwan's equaliser through Chang Han in the 31st minute.

Safiq, however, restored Malaysia's lead in the 40th minute when he curled a free-kick beyond the despairing dive of Lin Po Cheng.

But lessons were not learnt as Mahalli conceded possession cheaply and promptly gave away a penalty after clipping Chang Han from behind. Po Liang made it 2-2 from the spot off the hands of Sharbinee Allawee Ramli.

Hadi and Amirul had shots saved by Taiwan's replacement goalkeeper Pan Wen Chieh in the 58th minute before Fadhli Shas was adjudged to have pulled Po Liang down four minutes later.

Sharbinee rescued Malaysia by saving Po-Liang's penalty but it failed to galvanise the Malaysians as it was then the goalkeeper's turn to be penalised, harshly, as Po Liang took a tumble.

This time, Xavier stepped up to score on his debut and Malaysia rode out a few scares, not least when Lo Chih En sent a curling effort that almost found the top corner.

Check out this Czech in future

UNKNOWN no more, Petra Kvitova is a Wimbledon champion.

The 21-year-old Czech, who has worked her way up the rankings from 34th at the end of last season to No 7 today, beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the women's final on Saturday. And moments after finishing the match with an ace and dropping to her knees in celebration, Kvitova giggled when she saw her name etched in gold on the winner's board inside the All England Club.

"I don't know about this still. It's still (an) unbelievable feeling," said Petra, who was playing in her first grand slam final. "Maybe I'll accept it after, I don't know, some days."

Petra is the first left-handed woman to win the Wimbledon title since Martina Navratilova in 1990. And it was the nine-time champion that was giving her two thumbs up from her seat in the Royal Box as she was accepting well-wishes from anyone that could get her attention.

"She played brave tennis and she deserved to win. She was by far the better player," said Martina, who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. "It didn't happen overnight, but she's a champion. It's great."

Petra is only the third Czech woman to win the title at the All England Club, following Martina and Jana Novotna. Both were in the Royal Box, along with a host of other former champions. And both congratulated her after the match.

"I cried after I met them," Petra said.

Petra was playing in her first major final, but it was 2004 Wimbledon champion Sharapova that showed nerves. The 24-year-old Russian double-faulted six times, including twice to get broken to 4-2 in the first set.

Then, when the ball was in play, Kvitova used a fast-paced and well-placed forehand to keep Maria on the run, finishing with 19 winners.

"It was about the serve, for sure, and the return," said Petra, who lost in the semi-finals last year. "I know that she return very well, but I know that I can return her serve also. I knew that she make some double-fault."

When the match started, Maria was the clear favourite. Besides winning the title at the All England Club in 2004, she also won the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008 before shoulder surgery in October 2008 slowed her career.

She managed to break Petra in the opening game on Centre Court, but was broken right back in the second and then again in the sixth.

"She was just more aggressive than I was, hit deeper and harder, and got the advantage in the points," said Maria.

Maria had not lost a set heading into the final. But she struggled with her serve in the semi-finals, double-faulting 13 times before beating German wild card Sabine Lisicki.

Her serve wasn't as bad as that against Petra, but there were other problems with her game.

"Maybe I wasn't as ready after the serve as I should have been, and she just got the first good hit," Maria said. "I was always kind of late." -- AP

Asahi said in talks to buy Permanis

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 06:49 PM PDT

Asahi Group Holdings Ltd, Japan's biggest beermaker by sales volume, is in talks to acquire Permanis Sdn Bhd, PepsiCo Inc's bottler in Malaysia, for about US$200 million, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

Asahi is competing with another company to buy Permanis from Kuala Lumpur-based C.I. Holdings, said the person, who declined to be identified as discussions are private. A deal may be concluded within four to six weeks, the person said.

Japanese companies have accelerated investments abroad after production and power-supply disruptions following the nation's strongest earthquake on record on March 11, Daiwa Institute of Research said last week. The country's beverage makers are expanding overseas as a shrinking domestic population saps demand for their products.

Asahi president Naoki Izumiya said in February the company may spend 400 billion yen (US$5 billion) on acquisitions this year. C.I. Holdings is led by chief executive officer Erwin Selvarajah, who also runs Permanis, and makes taps, toilet bowls and showers in addition to its beverage business. Asahi spokesman Takayuki Tanaka declined to comment. Selvarajah didn't return calls to his office seeking comment.

Asahi today said it agreed to buy the mineral-water and juice businesses of closely held P&N Beverages Australia Pty Ltd for A$188 million (US$203 million). The Tokyo-based company is also competing with domestic rival Suntory Holdings Ltd to buy New Zealand's Independent Liquor, the Wall Street Journal reported last month, saying the deal may be valued at US$1.12 billion. Both brewers declined to comment on the report.

Sugar Subsidies

Increased competition and potential fluctuations in commodity-related costs are among challenges facing C.I. Holdings, the company said in its 2010 annual report. Last year, C.I. Holdings said it renewed its franchise bottling rights with PepsiCo for a 10-year term until June 2020.

In January, Permanis and other large beverage companies were told they were no longer eligible to buy subsidized sugar, resulting in a 38 per cent increase in sugar costs, the New Straits Times reported in April. C.I. Holdings reported a 25 percent drop in profit for the fiscal third quarter ended March 31 on higher costs. The company's stock has jumped 20 percent in the past month, trimming losses this year to 11 percent.

In 2000 and 2001, Permanis's plant in Bangi, Selangor was voted by PepsiCo as the most efficiently operated Pepsi- affiliated plant in the world, according to the company's website. -- Bloomberg

Property sector was cut to 'neutral' at RHB

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 06:22 PM PDT

Malaysia's property sector was cut to "neutral" from "overweight" at RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd, which said the expectation of strong property sales and earnings growth have already been factored into the share price.

"Sentiment will turn slightly negative and we expect demand starts to soften possibly next year," Loong Kok Wen, an analyst at RHB, said in a report today.

"The timing now is appropriate to be watchful on property stocks as we are now almost two years into the upcycle." -- Bloomberg
